[00:00:00] . Hey, hey, hey, welcome to the Sports Reverends podcast. My name is Dan, I'm joined with
[00:00:18] Karim Abdul-Jabbar. You know, Coach used to wear goggles when he played basketball originally. He had the
[00:00:30] goggles. It was actually a strap that connected the end of his glasses around. It worked. And no, it didn't. Every
[00:00:40] game that I watched there's glasses going fine. Coach, why don't you tell us how your weeks going?
[00:00:45] Week has been good. It's, you know, lots of March Madness over the weekend, which was great. I caught up on a lot of
[00:00:54] TV shows and found out brother and mouse finally flying in next week. So we're going to celebrate
[00:01:02] Easter with him and then get them all sorted out. So weeks been great. How are you yourself?
[00:01:07] Yeah, weeks been going pretty busy. We're hearing up for this Easter weekend. They're going to have a lot of fun at the
[00:01:13] church and doing a big Easter egg community hunt and give Friday service Sunday morning Easter service. So hopefully maybe even
[00:01:22] taking everyone to the Asian food for Easter dinner.
[00:01:26] Maybe there's also a 76 just game. Oh, that'd be fun too.
[00:01:32] Raptors tickets are real cheap right now. Let me tell you I look the same like Brooklyn. Lower bowl is going
[00:01:41] for 60 bucks Canadian. So we're that bad. The raptors are at that bad. You can see the hats above me. You know
[00:01:47] that I love them. They suck. They're there. They're going to be bad for a while. But that's okay. It makes it easy to go to games.
[00:01:57] Coach, why don't you just yeah, okay, okay, that's a good way to look at it. I guess it is fun still going but I hate losing.
[00:02:04] Why don't you tell us a little bit about what we're talking about during this show and then we'll
[00:02:09] Yeah, absolutely. We got a great topic here in theme with the Easter season. We have a quick hitter
[00:02:15] we're going to run through. We're going to look at sacrificing patients both in your faith journey and the sports world
[00:02:24] and how the two kind of parallel each other. Although one isn't sacrificing for your soul, but that's okay. We'll forget that part out. But
[00:02:32] yeah lots lots of talk about lots of parallels to draw and this time a year lots of sacrifice and patience is needed
[00:02:40] for the wraps. You have to be patient and a sacrifice to win those loose balls of March madness so lots of talk about what you guys
[00:02:48] just roll in here with quick hitters. Quick hitter news we got the NFL owners have approved a revamp
[00:02:55] of the kickoff and attempt to minimize high speed collisions. They also took away the hip tackle rule
[00:03:02] pretty wild lots of changes pretty well. We'll see how that goes the whole year. Show he autonomy and form
[00:03:08] interpreter. Oh man. If he Mizuhara are under investing in their investigation for illegal sports betting. We'll see how this rolls out
[00:03:18] on the same note Toronto Raptors John Tay Porter two way player, Glee player is under investigation by the NBA for betting on games
[00:03:27] in which he played over the past several months.
[00:03:31] And Clark closes her home career with a win as Iowa narrowly defeats West Virginia in the second round the NCAA women's turning
[00:03:39] NC state is the lowest seed left in the men's NCA tournament Duke you and see still alive that means none of us are
[00:03:49] sniffing smelling self this episode but maybe next one. I really don't want to talk about these videos
[00:03:58] looked up some videos on some people's reactions of them doing it and they were tougher than us. So we're going to struggle
[00:04:04] well you're going to struggle because you know no no no Duke's going to win today you wouldn't he's going to lose
[00:04:08] it's not be fine. Duke had a much much easier second game than UNC UNC you and see played a tough Michigan state team
[00:04:17] but yeah Michigan state is a well coached team. Tummy is a seat though but the Duke was playing
[00:04:23] in some they got James Madison. James James James not Ashley. They blew them up they blew them up we needed. They did they did let's handle some business with
[00:04:38] some of our commercials. Urban Hope is near and dear to my heart it's the mentorship program and gets
[00:04:46] to run in downtown Toronto. We are basically providing a safe place for kids and youth and
[00:04:52] marginalized neighborhood and we teach mentorship skills and allow them to put their mentorship skills to practice
[00:04:58] and basically it's all rooted in what the Bible teaches us so we teach them to be to grow up to be men
[00:05:05] and women of God and that's the plan and one of the things we like to
[00:05:10] participate in and help students grow in is using sports to help them develop these skills and
[00:05:17] and that's kind of the heartbeat of our podcast sports and faith have always been the root of our
[00:05:23] podcasts and how we wanted to develop our own life lessons and skills and now we want to pass it
[00:05:29] along to the next generation as well and we are in the process of starting this basketball program
[00:05:35] to help these students have opportunities that they wouldn't necessarily have if they weren't a part
[00:05:42] of this program because a lot of these opportunities play basketball they cost a lot of money
[00:05:47] and we want to provide these opportunities for these students to have a chance to develop, grow
[00:05:51] and and and be great on and off the court so if you're able to support any kind of way please
[00:05:56] consider doing so at www.theSportsRevans.com slash sponsorships thanks very much
[00:06:04] great uh let's get into the preamble here uh we talked a little bit about it to open the show
[00:06:09] obviously Easter weekends coming up and that's a really big you know big Christian milestone
[00:06:15] you got Christmas and Easter and the endless debate of which one is more important and
[00:06:21] but regardless it's an important part of the Christian calendar and uh if he lists it's a lot of
[00:06:29] thoughtfulness I would say as we remember um good Friday what uh what he's doing across
[00:06:37] on dying for a sins but I'm celebrating on Easter Sunday uh about him rising from the dead and
[00:06:43] giving us a path of salvation and similarly uh in sports and you know this and I know this
[00:06:51] you sacrifice a lot you sacrifice your body you sacrifice your health you sacrifice time
[00:06:58] all in the attempt to go to distance and get that w at the end of the day lift the patrophy
[00:07:07] so this is the time of year it's kind of perfect because March madness we're seeing
[00:07:12] all you know 64 I guess 68 teams who are who were working and sacrificing all year
[00:07:20] taking the patients that they want needed to practice and do all the right things
[00:07:24] to hopefully win the NSA trophy at the end of the year um let's just talk about working sacrifice
[00:07:31] first before we transition that into how that implies in your faith life do you have a personal story
[00:07:38] Daniel about sacrificing for the quote unquote greater good or for the win or
[00:07:44] anything like that in your sports life in my personal sports life yeah probably I think
[00:07:51] that's uh I think the natural tendency for me was never to be the go-to person always to be like
[00:07:57] a supplemental player like a Scotty Pippin or or even the third option or thing like things
[00:08:03] like that it was never my natural tendency to take over and be number one that was where I
[00:08:10] probably sacrificed a lot where you know I would support and build up the guy that needed to be
[00:08:16] number one and um so that's it's more of a general answer than a specific moment I would say
[00:08:22] because the way I think I think the way our mindset is that every the way we play is sacred
[00:08:29] we sacrifice it all right we put it on the floor we we're diving for loose balls we'll
[00:08:33] we'll take the toughest guy on defense and all those kinds of things man Reverend Chandron
[00:08:41] so humble on today's podcast give him a chance to give himself flowers and uh he took the
[00:08:48] higher road took the higher road which is great uh playoffs playoffs come around the corner for
[00:08:55] the NBA and NHL seasons and then we talked about roles before and then we talked about an offline
[00:09:02] here you're starting to see teams tighten rotations you're starting to see teams sacrifice
[00:09:08] uh you know in terms of stats and things like that but sure also starting to see potentially
[00:09:13] teams sacrificing wins now for future draft picks and to build contenders for the future um
[00:09:21] so let's think about that like what do you think with you know how teams are like NBA playoffs
[00:09:26] that bench is shortening right minutes are getting tougher to come by and and it feels when
[00:09:31] the game has I've been watching some coaches particularly those in the hot seat have been quicker
[00:09:38] to pull guys to let things ride out I think yeah like I think let me back this up to March
[00:09:47] madness I think it ties into what the NBA the minutes all the minutes that you're talking about
[00:09:51] here so the March madness see what what I love to see about March madness is you take a team like
[00:09:56] Kentucky they got NBA prospects on them right we're talking about the men's basketball I haven't
[00:10:01] watched a moment of the women's basketball actually only when they flip to it when there was no other
[00:10:07] games on and I maybe I maybe I am in the minority here and many people are tuning into these games
[00:10:13] but I'm just being honest I haven't watched a minute other women's game anyways Kentucky they have
[00:10:19] NBA level talent they got probably two players that are gonna go top 10 in the draft all that kind
[00:10:25] of stuff first round they play Colorado I believe it was and they got some future accountant future
[00:10:33] plumber who is lighting them up absolutely dropping three pointers like crazy and what you see
[00:10:41] is you see a team that has veterans and and and and players that are willing to sacrifice for their
[00:10:47] system play a team game compared to Kentucky who's got all these individuals that are trying to win
[00:10:54] a game and and you see when you sacrifice your ego sacrifice your your stats sacrifice all those
[00:11:00] things you're going to have a better successful team a more successful team than one that has
[00:11:05] better talent than you and on that's what I love to see in March madness you see future accountants
[00:11:10] beating future NBA stars and and so going into the minutes thing of the NBA if you see
[00:11:17] teams that are this is more than the east than the west for me the east
[00:11:23] most of the teams that are going to make the playoffs including the plan they know that they're at
[00:11:27] least going to make it so it's a little different when they sit players you know it's usually
[00:11:33] because of injury but when you see it in the west you know they're supposed to be wrapping up for
[00:11:37] the playoffs but then you see a team like Golden State where they they sit curry for 12 minutes in
[00:11:43] the second half to save his minutes right and and they go on to lose a game which they they probably
[00:11:49] should have won they're in the tenth their half game up on Houston Rockets right now and and so
[00:11:55] I don't know wake I don't know what these teams are doing you see the top teams that are playing
[00:11:59] their guys like the nuggets and the the wolves and the thunder they're the top but then all the
[00:12:05] all the teams that should have that have bigger names bigger payrolls they are
[00:12:11] ninth a seventh eighth ninth and tenth is Dallas
[00:12:15] um can't remember number eight no Dallas Phoenix Lakers Warriors and then the Rockets are a half
[00:12:24] game back from that like that's insane to me that's insane to me it's and and it's all these minutes
[00:12:29] like we'll bronze sitting out tonight uh versus the box why is that happening why is that like like
[00:12:35] to me just the win so these so basically exactly so what you see our teams that are successful
[00:12:43] sacrificing themselves or it's it's really preparing yourselves right the more work you're putting into
[00:12:49] is supposed to prepare you for the championship run taking these minutes off are not preparing you
[00:12:55] in a way that should i'll pass it back to you yeah I think I think it's a great example like
[00:13:03] there's such a difference between college and professional that you know I think the thing that
[00:13:10] draws people into the college game is but one in done the genuine raw motions because like yeah
[00:13:18] the guy from Colorado who was pumping three is the entire year I saw a string of memes of like
[00:13:24] getting beat by a potential enterprise rent car manager or you know accounting things like that
[00:13:30] right and you know you know there's that Cinderella sort of that can come through and in your right
[00:13:37] the the Cal led Kentucky teams this one and done isn't necessarily working out for him in terms of
[00:13:45] winning but the the the the the my question is this goal we're trying to win or just trick
[00:13:51] a guy's to the draft right because of if you're if you're getting you know draft it and your potential
[00:13:59] high school you we want to go there because of the track record right where is he a better
[00:14:05] recruiter than coach maybe he's not that good at coach he or one son like I mean he has
[00:14:14] he does have a track record so I don't know I've got coming back to it the sacrificing part
[00:14:23] you see like for example we'll take the wrong yeah sure he's not playing today
[00:14:28] um and his mind is probably looking at the standings uh two and a half games above the
[00:14:34] warriors were probably good for night I'm a game and a half below the suns probably not going to
[00:14:39] catch them so I can take tonight off not embarrass myself in front of the vux and that's the wrong type
[00:14:45] of sacrifice versus look at um Anthony Edwards he has the opportunity to say okay hats out
[00:14:55] I'm just gonna start scoring more is scoring more taking more shots however his assists are
[00:15:02] his playmaking has gone up he's still got the opportunity to say okay I could you know push myself
[00:15:09] score more points look better for you know MVP voting potentially things like that
[00:15:15] or I can do what is good for the team and sacrifice that way right and you see that in like all
[00:15:25] sorts of organizations and you and you look at the even when you look at church there's lots of
[00:15:30] people who come to church right on a weekly basis um but there's and in some places they have
[00:15:38] the opportunity where they have a lot of people who want to volunteer some places you don't
[00:15:44] and it tends to be in the smaller places where you have the same what's called core group that
[00:15:50] sacrifice to make sure that things are getting taken care of and they don't do that to say hey
[00:15:57] hello I'm a volunteer look at me they do that because they're all trying to honor God
[00:16:03] right they they come in early you know the mixture of places clean make sure things are set up
[00:16:08] uh you know they take care of you know people who are outgoing they go and you know
[00:16:13] walk around and try and and and uh make people feel comfortable
[00:16:18] and that's also a sacrifice because you know like let's be honest I'll be honest not every Sunday
[00:16:23] morning I want to come in there and be like hey everybody well I'm here at church want me to
[00:16:29] sample but I just want to sometimes I want to sleep in I don't want to be there but it's making
[00:16:35] that effort to say hey I'm sacrificing not just for myself but for the quote unquote team so that we
[00:16:42] can worship God in a good way and who knows maybe that random person who walked enough to
[00:16:48] street who just saw oh see I PC what's that all about they get welcomed in and they feel like oh
[00:16:54] this is the opposite of what I felt in other churches so it's that sacrifice that you see it's
[00:16:59] interesting because you can sacrifice selfishly which we don't think about or it can sacrifice
[00:17:07] really great to get which you talk about a lot yeah um for sure I think um
[00:17:18] sacrifice is something that is it can definitely be a selfish thing you know I'm going to
[00:17:25] well I guess that's the way you look at it but it can definitely be whatever your tensions are
[00:17:32] can be a selfish thing yeah so yeah what's next let's talk about the sacrifice in this way like
[00:17:41] how many guys actually want to win the professional leagues by every says they want to win
[00:17:48] but for all these guys is about how big of a bag they can get and one easy example that I always
[00:17:53] think about is game in Portland the guy made so much money and he had such a big percentage
[00:18:03] of that salary cap but they were hand and strong in what they could do to support him with the cast
[00:18:12] right whereas you look at uh shohe and even Patrick my homes like Otani has deferred most of his money
[00:18:22] there's no way that the Dodgers could have gotten both those guys this year and then some
[00:18:29] without all that deferred money they had to change the rules because no one else had ever thought
[00:18:34] about oh let's just think about my team and be confident I didn't need to defer that money though
[00:18:40] okay maybe maybe he was for gambling we don't know we don't know it's time to take I'm gonna say
[00:18:49] he did it for the right reasons if it comes out otherwise he comes out otherwise
[00:18:53] you're back at your home and ship mentality that you're talking about 100%
[00:18:58] yeah that's what I'm talking about so like that's what you know when it comes to guys taking less money
[00:19:07] I always look at their contracting they're like okay you took two million dollars less
[00:19:12] you've already made a hundred million dollars and I know there's a multiple views from this
[00:19:19] you look from the views of the union of star players taking less money right but if I want to win
[00:19:25] I already have banked a hundred million dollars does it really does it personally matter
[00:19:32] could but as a person matter if you make 30 million versus 15 million in a year that's a lot of money
[00:19:41] it's a lot of money but what are you judged on and your legacy's judged on how many rings you have
[00:19:48] I think I think a good example of this is Boston Celtics right now you look at Jaylin Brown
[00:19:55] right he made that 305 million dollar contract whatever it was and to me if you're taking that money
[00:20:02] I don't have a problem with you getting the big but you're going to have to then elevate to the level
[00:20:09] of what it's worth right you see Yo-Kit just is like one of the highest but I think he's making almost
[00:20:14] 60 million per year he's the one that's actually elevating guys like Aaron Gordon Michael Porter Jr
[00:20:22] all these guys into the next level right he's raising them I think his worth is there Jaylin Brown
[00:20:28] is not doing that at all right Jaylin Brown is he's a good player but he's not he's not worth
[00:20:35] 300 plus million dollars right like I think that's a mistake in in the contract but
[00:20:43] just shows you can't fault him for taking it it's the it's it's the championship mentality that
[00:20:48] you're talking about right his his team is not going to be able to pay the rest of his players
[00:20:53] as much going forward especially Tatum's coming up for the 300 million dollar contract this year
[00:20:57] so they'll play those two guys will they be able to keep on Perzingus will they be able to keep
[00:21:02] on the other guy absolutely not are these guys going to elevate the rest of the players which
[00:21:07] that'll think so no and you can see that like yeah the Celtics are they're going to be amazing
[00:21:15] this year but if they don't win this year is there window closed they have four amazing guys the
[00:21:25] benches I would say Derek white yeah good Derek white yeah he's he's I think one of those guys
[00:21:34] who's maximizing his potential and yeah and so the maybe they go they go eight deep after after eight
[00:21:43] you have no idea what you get like zero right you're going to have to you know second round picks
[00:21:50] draft minimum and salaries like that stuff this could be it for them right teams like the box the
[00:21:58] calves the magic Pacers are probably in better cap positions to take advantage of the 76ers
[00:22:05] a little large next year with with all the cap space so building your cap and understanding okay
[00:22:12] who needs to sacrifice how can we sacrifice are we all on the same page is huge is huge and that
[00:22:20] and that applies to what we're doing on the faith side of things too right now I'm sure you can come
[00:22:28] over the few examples of characters not characters but you know people in the Bible who have sacrificed
[00:22:36] you know for their faith you think of all the apostles who got
[00:22:41] and who got martyred martyred yeah that's the word martyred martyred martyred sorry
[00:22:48] martyred for their faith right like I'm gonna lie how do I be crucified upside down
[00:22:56] I don't have this I don't that's you know that's that would be a tough act for anybody but
[00:23:04] you know God asks us to sacrifice for a lot of things and what was it historically treasures in heaven right
[00:23:13] I think that's what really walking and maturity in your faith looks like great like
[00:23:19] what are you able to like last week we talked about surrender what are you able to surrender
[00:23:23] it's a very similar in the sense of sacrifice right are you able to sacrifice the things of this
[00:23:28] world for honor in heaven right honor to God rather than honor here on earth and
[00:23:35] storing up your stuff here on earth like you're saying it's storing up your treasures in heaven
[00:23:41] so when it comes to contracts it's exactly like that that's not a winning attitude and I think there's
[00:23:48] a winning attitude when it comes to your faith as well yeah I'm not sure you shared that story
[00:23:54] about you and mom and dad arguing on Sunday morning basketball here but I think that's a really
[00:23:59] good example of sacrificing for your faith whether you like it or not right you did it um you know
[00:24:06] and I think we I think if you look back people can come up with lots of different stories about
[00:24:12] sacrificing and often they don't see what do they do but at least you know might have been they
[00:24:19] don't really see how that ties to the next blessing that's come their way right like the next you
[00:24:27] know the way somehow God worked and fixed a situation or gave a resolution or something and maybe
[00:24:37] maybe it was God's plan but you were also you were also beaten enough to follow through you're
[00:24:43] also beaten enough to say okay this is my stance and I'm sticking to it um I'm gonna let the rest
[00:24:51] lie in God's hands right so that sacrificial idea you know we come to sports as you know hey
[00:24:59] I know that you know personally for me I was never the best shooter is it the best idea for me
[00:25:06] be jacking up three left friend center no I have a great passer why not break it down to defense
[00:25:13] past the ball and I'll give you a story my last ever basketball game on it for grade 12 was we were
[00:25:23] playing the fifth place game up in Fenton and I scored a grand total of three points and we crushed
[00:25:31] the team yeah we crushed these guys now this is dropping times left friend center because like we
[00:25:36] would these guys were just so bad that we were playing against um it didn't make sense to just
[00:25:42] run up the score right and I ended up getting a like the some sort of like recognition for
[00:25:50] the man of the match will call it um and basically it's it's because I was the only grade 12 on the floor
[00:25:58] and I remember coming back to school and one of the teachers like hey I saw you got the man
[00:26:03] in match for this uh but it's said you only had three points gentlemen did you actually have 30
[00:26:07] oh it's like nah I was just having had three because and I explained to him like there's no point in
[00:26:13] me destroying these guys when we're already up 30 40 like yeah it's my last game I want to play
[00:26:19] on the minutes but I'd rather just win right so I think that in that mentality is what we want
[00:26:26] to bring to the urban hope basketball team is what are you doing to win not only on the basketball
[00:26:31] court but also in your life you know as students are you studying are you putting the time in
[00:26:38] to make sure that your homework's done that you're asking the right questions are you putting the
[00:26:42] time in to help your family be a good leader in your community because you know most young men don't
[00:26:51] have that in their life right they see TikTok either you're and you're tater you're Dylan Mulvayne
[00:26:59] right there's such wide extremes of what men should be in masculinity and yeah you know
[00:27:07] maybe I don't always use an adjutant saying but when I look at the bible it's about being a leader
[00:27:13] it's about being a resource about being a rock and that comes with practice that comes with being
[00:27:19] patience that comes with putting in the work when no one can see right and just like the
[00:27:27] basketball practice you run those man-makers and by you know let's call it April when you're playing
[00:27:35] for your championships you're you're sprinting and you're not tired in quarter number four
[00:27:41] because you've put that time and effort in all the way through same thing when you know you get
[00:27:48] a bad decision goes against you and maybe your workplace maybe you don't get that promotion
[00:27:54] yeah it hurts and it sucks but you also know that my hope is built in God God is my strength
[00:28:01] and my fortress because you've prayed and you read your bio and you're building up your faith
[00:28:07] you're not going to the next thing right you don't just say oh my identity is my workplace
[00:28:13] so I think all these things like sacrifice patience putting in the work that we talk about in sports
[00:28:21] and that you're seeing on March madness you're seeing in the playoffs you're seeing guys posting
[00:28:27] on Instagram and the weight rooms all that is so applicable to your faith and how you deal with people
[00:28:37] yeah I think when you see when you look at like superstars like
[00:28:42] yokech I love looking at yokech because he he brings in humility and and you see his off-season where
[00:28:48] he's not showing his work or it's anything like that I'm sure he's putting in work there they're all
[00:28:52] said oh yeah he wasn't in the gym once this summer I totally disagree I disagree with that but
[00:28:58] he's not showing it off right he's showing it off in the court but he's also showing that you know
[00:29:02] it's it's not about making my name big it's about winning the game it's about playing team basketball
[00:29:08] you see to pair the Celtics and the nuggets you know the last those those this week the nuggets are
[00:29:14] the Celtics dropped a 30-point loss to Atlanta right and landed without trade and and it wins
[00:29:22] there's one of the one of the last possessions was jalen brown taking 23 dribbles
[00:29:28] and then taking a last like really rushed shot at stand when when the Celtics lost to the
[00:29:34] cleaving Cavaliers when they didn't have anyone playing and and there was dean Wade who went off on them
[00:29:39] it was Jason Tade I'm taking a 19 dribble last possession with a fade away jumper when the rest of
[00:29:45] the game they're running their motions running in their system you look at the nuggets that's what
[00:29:49] they constantly do they don't bear away from it and and the system at the end of the game is
[00:29:54] pick and roll with Murray and and uh and yoke kitchen and maybe kick it out to to order for a three or
[00:30:01] find Aaron Gordon for that baseline duck that's what it is and it's all run through yoke and they continually
[00:30:06] run it it's that consistency so I think there's something important about being consistent in
[00:30:11] in the game plan right and I think that's the winning attitude that you need to take and you can apply
[00:30:16] it to your faith walk as well um you got to be consistent in and and not changing and not
[00:30:23] veering off the plan of of how you want to approach your daily walk right your daily walk as a man
[00:30:29] your daily walk in and how you um consume content the daily walk in how you treat people all those
[00:30:35] things I think it's very important to follow that and that's uh the consistency the playbook is
[00:30:41] is the battle right that's the difference with sport absolutely absolutely um I think that's
[00:30:48] that's great that's a great place to end um consistency you know we're the one thing that we know
[00:30:55] is god is consistent it's the same yesterday today forever right so great I think that's great um

[00:31:17] chance for connecting with our community that's that's the whole weekend that's what it's about
