[00:00:44] I'm going to date myself here and tell you that I lived BC. No, not BC as in the time before

[00:00:53] Christ, as my youngest believed when he asked me if I was older than Moses. Or when my daughter

[00:01:00] asked me if I rode a dinosaur to school. Though, in all fairness, I used to joke that I did,

[00:01:06] hence the question. No, I mean BC as in before computers. At least, the personal computers

[00:01:14] we've come to know and rely upon. We did have ginormous computers back in the day. They took

[00:01:22] up whole rooms and only had 5 kilobytes of memory. I'd go visit them at Lawrence Livermore Labs on

[00:01:29] school field trips back in the Bay Area of California where I grew up. Thus, with the advent of portable

[00:01:36] personal computers, it's been a couple of decades since I've woken up at oh dark 30 to go Black Friday

[00:01:43] shopping. But today is not the first or only Black Friday. Literal Black Friday. No, that day occurred

[00:01:54] over 2,000 years ago. Listen to the account in Luke 23 44 – 47.

[00:02:03] It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over all the land until the ninth hour. The sun was

[00:02:11] darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn down the middle. Then Jesus called out in a loud voice,

[00:02:19] Father, into your hands I commit my spirit. And when he had said this, he breathed his last.

[00:02:28] Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, saying, Certainly, this man was innocent.

[00:02:39] It's crazy to think about the mob scene on that Black Friday, calling for the death of an innocent man.

[00:02:47] The crazed throngs of today scuffle over material items priced unbelievably low, or come with a free gift

[00:02:57] for the first X number of people in line. But on the Black Friday I'm talking about, there was also a free gift,

[00:03:05] and it was available to everyone. One guy was smart enough to claim it on that day.

[00:03:13] It would be weeks before the day of Pentecost, when a sermon simple enough for unlearned Galileans

[00:03:20] to preach, that many from that earlier crazed mob finally understood the import of this free gift.

[00:03:31] They asked then what so many have asked in the intervening years, and what we should ask today.

[00:03:39] What should we do? And the answer is still the same. Peter replied, Repent and be baptized,

[00:03:48] every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive

[00:03:55] the gift of the Holy Spirit. This promise belongs to you, and to your children, and to all who are far

[00:04:03] off, to all whom the Lord our God will call to himself. Acts 2, 38 and 39.

[00:04:12] So on this day, the world calls Black Friday. Harken back to the real Black Friday, and get your free gift.
