Be Merciful

[00:00:00] We want kindness, mercy and love shown to us.

[00:00:05] Often those are some of the hardest to extend to others.

[00:00:48] You may remember a little while ago I did a number of episodes on kindness.

[00:00:54] Now I'd like to shift to its sister, Mercy.

[00:00:59] Right now I'm a jumble and kaleidoscope of emotions.

[00:01:04] I'm not sure I have the words to adequately describe this funk.

[00:01:10] At its root I'm hopeful rest.

[00:01:13] Physical rest and rest in him.

[00:01:17] We'll put it to rest.

[00:01:20] I've been praying a lot and tussling a bit because I feel the flesh and spirit playing tug of war on my soul.

[00:01:30] I landed on these verses and they resonate with me today.

[00:01:35] I hope they are a blessing to you as well.

[00:01:40] But to those of you who will listen I say,

[00:01:44] Love your enemies.

[00:01:46] Do good to those who hate you.

[00:01:48] Bless those who curse you.

[00:01:51] Pray for those who mistreat you.

[00:01:55] If someone strikes you on the cheek turn to him the other also.

[00:02:00] And if someone takes your cloak do not withhold your tunic as well.

[00:02:04] Give to everyone who asks of you.

[00:02:07] And if anyone takes what is yours do not demand it back.

[00:02:12] Do to others as you would have them do to you.

[00:02:17] If you love those who love you what credit is that to you?

[00:02:21] Even sinners love those who love them.

[00:02:25] If you do good to those who do good to you what credit is that to you?

[00:02:32] Even sinners do the same.

[00:02:34] And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment what credit is that to you?

[00:02:42] Even sinners lend to sinners expecting to be repaid in full.

[00:02:48] But love your enemies do good to them and lend to them expecting nothing in return.

[00:02:57] Then your reward will be great and you will be sons of the most high.

[00:03:04] For he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.

[00:03:09] Be merciful just as your father is merciful.
