[00:01:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Tanya is the founder and CEO of The Refig. The Refig is a no-nonsense hair and personal

[00:01:23] [SPEAKER_00]: care line. Products are easy and quick to use naturally effective and travel friendly. The Refig

[00:01:29] [SPEAKER_00]: is available online via TikTok shop, Tanya in the Refig participated in

[00:01:33] [SPEAKER_00]: Tanya's Music Accelerator in 2022 and the Credo for Change Mentorship Program.

[00:01:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Welcome to the show Tanya. Hi I'm so excited to be here thank you.

[00:01:46] [SPEAKER_00]: I am excited to have you on to the show why did you tell us about yourself?

[00:01:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Well I'll tell you about myself in two runs first hi I'm Tanya and I help me start up to grow

[00:01:59] [SPEAKER_01]: I do so by making sure that the people processes and technology are there so teams can succeed.

[00:02:06] [SPEAKER_01]: My background includes six and a half years at the Federal Reserve where I built the

[00:02:10] [SPEAKER_01]: platforms behind the large scale asset purchase programs and I've worked at several

[00:02:15] [SPEAKER_01]: startups since then and currently I am working on The Refig

[00:02:22] [SPEAKER_01]: and that said the Refig is a hair care brand taking the BS out of getting ready everything is

[00:02:30] [SPEAKER_01]: quick and easy to use ingredients can feel good about and then ego and travel friendly.

[00:02:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Everything is inspired by my personal journey with having an autoimmune condition and then just

[00:02:40] [SPEAKER_01]: being a busy person that said we have solid bar conditioners and shampoos that come on

[00:02:47] [SPEAKER_01]: huge strings like this or ribbons so that you can not only know what the product is but you

[00:02:53] [SPEAKER_01]: can also hang it easily in your shower and then we also have the only plant-based powder to gel

[00:02:59] [SPEAKER_01]: on the market. It looks like Parmesan almost you just kind of shake it in your hand get your hands

[00:03:04] [SPEAKER_01]: wet rub your hands together and Tada you've got curls at last for days. Okay so so much what

[00:03:11] [SPEAKER_00]: you said was so impressive but let's get into the hair can we because look at your curls I love them

[00:03:18] [SPEAKER_00]: so much and you all know I love curly hair now I got my hair straight right now but like I love

[00:03:23] [SPEAKER_00]: me some curly hairs so I gotta ask you this as a sister with porcine curls.

[00:03:32] [SPEAKER_00]: I also refer to them as fight the power curls does the refig work for that yes.

[00:03:39] [SPEAKER_01]: Did the refig work for my curls? Yes yes and I like I have to say first and foremost I come from

[00:03:52] [SPEAKER_01]: this perspective that it kind of doesn't matter what hair type you have. This is a lot more about

[00:04:01] [SPEAKER_01]: making sure that you get a regimen that works for you. If you're like me I love simple and easy

[00:04:07] [SPEAKER_01]: right everybody out there is telling you how to stand on one foot underneath the blue moon

[00:04:13] [SPEAKER_01]: champ five times like the seal and then your hair is gonna do something. I'm down to like just

[00:04:22] [SPEAKER_01]: three products that I use on a regular basis and you know I'm also about loving all hair types

[00:04:30] [SPEAKER_01]: and so particularly I feel that women with porcine hair will just about any form of waves,

[00:04:39] [SPEAKER_01]: curls or coils love our champs and our conditioner. So the shampoo is something that

[00:04:47] [SPEAKER_01]: is formulated so that your hair doesn't feel tangled and stripped when you're done right like I'm

[00:04:53] [SPEAKER_01]: sure we've all had that like where you wash your hair and then suddenly like nothing can get up in there

[00:05:02] [SPEAKER_01]: no there's so many reasons that's that a great experience right I made sure when I was

[00:05:09] [SPEAKER_01]: formulating to not have that experience I made sure that things were pH balance so that the

[00:05:16] [SPEAKER_01]: hair cuticle instead of going like this at a high pH was actually at a low pH and you know didn't

[00:05:24] [SPEAKER_01]: angle a lot I made sure I put conditioners in there like not only to we do the conditioners step

[00:05:29] [SPEAKER_01]: to actually condition their hair and through some additional oils in there you know show a little

[00:05:35] [SPEAKER_01]: love and then our conditioner is designed to have just like additional detangling slip right like

[00:05:41] [SPEAKER_01]: that's the number one comment I get which is oh my gosh your products

[00:05:48] [SPEAKER_01]: detangle right the conditioner the shampoo detangles the conditioner especially detangles

[00:05:55] [SPEAKER_01]: and then if you're using the powder to gel just really good for like wash and goes and like

[00:06:01] [SPEAKER_01]: trying to define curls that also when you get your hair wet later helps to pangle so it's

[00:06:08] [SPEAKER_01]: randes for everybody and you know the you know they each do their different things but if

[00:06:16] [SPEAKER_01]: you have forcey here especially recommend trying the shampoo and the conditioners oh my goodness

[00:06:21] [SPEAKER_00]: that's amazing and as someone who has actually worked in the hair care industry back in the day

[00:06:27] [SPEAKER_00]: that was me it's been interesting and exciting to see the much needed shift and how the various

[00:06:34] [SPEAKER_00]: hair types are highlighted and celebrated so what are some of the common misconceptions about

[00:06:41] [SPEAKER_00]: curly hair and what does an ideal curly hair routine look like okay so some of the misconceptions

[00:06:49] [SPEAKER_01]: are around like washing it like I hear so many things that people say about like how frequently

[00:06:58] [SPEAKER_01]: you can wash it how long it needs to take so like let's put it this way your hair can be washed

[00:07:06] [SPEAKER_01]: daily it can be washed or conditioned after you go ahead and you know go in the sun or you go

[00:07:14] [SPEAKER_01]: you know swimming they like wash it it's okay let's begin particularly if you go in the pool right

[00:07:23] [SPEAKER_01]: wash those chemicals out I think that's the first one people like oh no no no no no I

[00:07:28] [SPEAKER_01]: I can only wash and then they'll throw up this number I'm not trying to embarrass anybody

[00:07:33] [SPEAKER_01]: it with them too but especially if you're wearing your hair curly and you're doing washing goes

[00:07:38] [SPEAKER_01]: washing your hair every two to three days is actually very normal and very healthy it's not going

[00:07:43] [SPEAKER_01]: you've got the right products it's not going to dry out your hair yeah um the other misconceptions

[00:07:49] [SPEAKER_01]: are how much time that it takes like I actually just posted a tikka showing people what it looks like

[00:07:56] [SPEAKER_01]: when I wake up late I had like 15 minutes before I'm eating I really did record it right and I

[00:08:06] [SPEAKER_01]: just like jumped in the shower I was and I did my hair I and was done my hair was done in like 10 minutes

[00:08:13] [SPEAKER_01]: but I also did some makeup and got dressed 13 minutes and 23 seconds it's like you the full day yes

[00:08:23] [SPEAKER_01]: I can process that's impressive my hair was in dry but it was still is presentable right

[00:08:30] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah and so those are the things where it's like no you just like it's okay you you can you you don't have to

[00:08:37] [SPEAKER_01]: do tons of this and twist and everything like that if it's taking you a long time you're probably

[00:08:42] [SPEAKER_00]: fighting your hair yeah you're here is fighting back yep yep yep as someone who has

[00:08:50] [SPEAKER_00]: man I've lost so many battles I can't even I can't even count on many battles of loss so that's

[00:08:57] [SPEAKER_01]: true like you're like whatever oh I guess that's the other misconception that I should add in there

[00:09:05] [SPEAKER_01]: everybody wants a different something different than the hair they have I will talk to my friends

[00:09:10] [SPEAKER_01]: that had like sticks right here all the way through the spectrum and everybody is looking for something

[00:09:16] [SPEAKER_01]: else whatever you have it's gorgeous it's all about the cut and your process and your products

[00:09:24] [SPEAKER_01]: it's not about your hair yeah that's not like your natural hair tell I'm telling you it was gorgeous

[00:09:31] [SPEAKER_00]: you just need to learn how to treat it right that's true that's true that's true so I want to

[00:09:40] [SPEAKER_00]: get more of the refigs so as a fellow per other hair girl that's me I was intrigued by your

[00:09:46] [SPEAKER_00]: product because I've never seen anything like your product on the market so let alone for those

[00:09:54] [SPEAKER_00]: of us that have curly hair so can you tell us more about your product and what motivated you to

[00:09:58] [SPEAKER_00]: create it because again you guys got to check this out make sure you check out the show notes

[00:10:03] [SPEAKER_01]: it is something I've never seen before it's awesome thank you you know what this is that and

[00:10:11] [SPEAKER_01]: just got chills because there's you know for anyone out there that's you know made a piece of artwork

[00:10:18] [SPEAKER_01]: like you know you just think about to like back to second grade right like you went to art class

[00:10:23] [SPEAKER_01]: and you poured your heart into like this design and you took it home and like who member was there

[00:10:32] [SPEAKER_01]: that's you know and you that little bit of pride that's the thing that I get when people are like

[00:10:36] [SPEAKER_01]: he what you're doing is cool so that said I have room twitter thrinus i found it was kind

[00:10:45] [SPEAKER_01]: of funny it was like the summer when my like my besties were all getting married or having their

[00:10:50] [SPEAKER_01]: first kid i pop up with room twitter thrinus i was like oh that's a different life my also don't

[00:10:56] [SPEAKER_01]: hear yeah yeah that one and i learned a lot about the importance of what i put in

[00:11:03] [SPEAKER_01]: and on my body right i cleaned up my diet was already eating pretty well but like i also

[00:11:09] [SPEAKER_01]: was very conscious about the cosmetics i started putting on my on my face and on my body but

[00:11:15] [SPEAKER_01]: the thing that wasn't there was the hair care right there was like at that time clean beauty was

[00:11:21] [SPEAKER_01]: only just starting there were only a handful of brands getting out there talking about like being

[00:11:28] [SPEAKER_01]: natural so i just started making my own stuff and then one day one of my college roommates comes

[00:11:34] [SPEAKER_01]: over and sees like some of it up on the shelf and she goes wait second is that while you're

[00:11:40] [SPEAKER_01]: hair is so curly and defy and then she kind of got mad because she's like oh my god you're holding

[00:11:45] [SPEAKER_01]: out on me you're not gonna care too my only son and you haven't given me this and i was like

[00:11:54] [SPEAKER_01]: oh my god anyway she takes some home slathers it all over her and her kids and then starts

[00:11:59] [SPEAKER_01]: text messaging are like a uh really group and goes my curls are doing something i've never seen

[00:12:08] [SPEAKER_01]: before by the way i hear that all the time now like especially from the middle like oh

[00:12:13] [SPEAKER_01]: um and stir the room in groups starts messaging me uh and like sending the money to ship them

[00:12:20] [SPEAKER_01]: stuff and i was like i'm i don't have a business guy's and they're like oh that's cute

[00:12:24] [SPEAKER_01]: that doesn't work that way give me some yeah i started sharing with friends and family

[00:12:31] [SPEAKER_01]: and i got kind of unweely because it turns out they were sharing it with their friends and family

[00:12:37] [SPEAKER_01]: and one day i got a message that had it picture of a small child uh talking for more

[00:12:45] [SPEAKER_01]: of tanya's hair and i was like oh you so cute we're second who are you who's your mama

[00:12:52] [SPEAKER_01]: and i'm not gonna cry haha yeah my friends were sharing and it was kind of cool because

[00:12:58] [SPEAKER_01]: if and i had a market it was also really scary because um i wasn't making this stuff in my kitchen right

[00:13:04] [SPEAKER_01]: like just kind of doing me so i decided to shut it down and bring it to market and when i did that

[00:13:09] [SPEAKER_01]: i really just like doubled down on a lot of my beliefs about it needing to be creating needing

[00:13:15] [SPEAKER_01]: it to be eco friendly uh and so that's where you know really landed on things like you know the

[00:13:21] [SPEAKER_01]: the solid bar right like this right here which i've been by the at home can see if it's

[00:13:27] [SPEAKER_01]: palm of my hand this is equivalent of like three bars uh or that three bars three bottles

[00:13:34] [SPEAKER_01]: of traditional shampoo right this here this little mini that we have that's like perfect for

[00:13:40] [SPEAKER_01]: traveling and fits in like this little tin here this is the equivalent of one bottle of conditioner

[00:13:48] [SPEAKER_01]: like yeah i know right that like just you know that 70 to 90 percent of the products that we

[00:13:57] [SPEAKER_01]: carry around water uh that kind of stinks because that's a lot of money in terms of like

[00:14:04] [SPEAKER_01]: transportation a lot of plastic uh that goes into the environment and you know depending on how

[00:14:12] [SPEAKER_01]: you think about things but worst part is is that you're just going on vacation try to look

[00:14:16] [SPEAKER_01]: and you're worried about whether or not TSA is going to take your stuff or that's going to spill

[00:14:21] [SPEAKER_01]: all over your back um i just i'm necessary um and you know it allowed me to not only you know

[00:14:28] [SPEAKER_01]: do more eco-trap friendly stuff like infinitely recyclable tins but we've also allowed me to cut out a lot

[00:14:37] [SPEAKER_01]: of the the b-ass right like i'm like preservatives that are now you know um in a lot of our products

[00:14:45] [SPEAKER_01]: but you know in a lot of you know countries and even states now it's coming under question

[00:14:52] [SPEAKER_01]: of whether or not we should be putting some of the stuff on our bodies so that's a long

[00:14:58] [SPEAKER_01]: winter wave say like hey at an autoimmune condition uh i enjoy traveling and i just need something

[00:15:07] [SPEAKER_01]: that intersected and got a lot of validation like accidently that is and that is amazing and i

[00:15:14] [SPEAKER_00]: love these types of stories how people are just accidental entrepreneurs like you didn't even

[00:15:19] [SPEAKER_00]: you weren't seeking this you just fell into it and that to me is just that's amazing i mean

[00:15:25] [SPEAKER_00]: that that to me is like that was your purpose and calling all the whip-up i'm curious what were

[00:15:30] [SPEAKER_00]: some of the barriers that you might have encountered and trying to get this to the market because again

[00:15:37] [SPEAKER_00]: you're product is so different i've never seen anything like that and try i can only imagine

[00:15:42] [SPEAKER_00]: that whole process of trying to convince other people that this is something that we need to

[00:15:49] [SPEAKER_01]: pay attention to yes and definitely still having them so you know i'll kind of walk through

[00:15:56] [SPEAKER_01]: them in different steps and just focus out there also understand what what it might look like for

[00:16:02] [SPEAKER_01]: them and sometimes how you have to just like shift your mindset so the first barrier was just even

[00:16:08] [SPEAKER_01]: finding a manufacturer who could really work with me right so many there's so many folks out there

[00:16:17] [SPEAKER_01]: who will just take your money quite honestly and i ran into a couple of them and that was just

[00:16:23] [SPEAKER_01]: it was mind-blowing um first from the sense of like they just didn't understand what i was doing

[00:16:29] [SPEAKER_01]: and or you know how to work with a small business like mine so maybe you know some of the big

[00:16:36] [SPEAKER_01]: guys originally said like oh we have low minimums yeah and you have to do 50,000 units

[00:16:43] [SPEAKER_01]: as i live in the New York City apartment where am I storing all of this stuff exactly there were

[00:16:50] [SPEAKER_01]: other folks who said yeah i could do this but then didn't know how to like just really didn't

[00:16:56] [SPEAKER_01]: have the tools like i remember one lady who sent me this very frantic message about like keep trying

[00:17:02] [SPEAKER_01]: to see thing and it's not working this is a definition of insanity and then the bigger next message

[00:17:08] [SPEAKER_01]: said oops no worries like my staff member was using the wrong spoon oh okay i i was like great

[00:17:21] [SPEAKER_01]: standard weeds and measures let's actually just move on and then there's a lot of people

[00:17:27] [SPEAKER_01]: will just try to convince you that what you're trying to do is not necessary so many people said

[00:17:31] [SPEAKER_01]: let's start from the base of base products that are already out there let one and then i add in

[00:17:37] [SPEAKER_01]: all these things that you already just told me that you didn't want to have in there so for me

[00:17:42] [SPEAKER_01]: what i did was you know there's those times where you do you have to delegate and then there's

[00:17:46] [SPEAKER_01]: those times where you just have to say oh my goodness this i have to own so i really did learn

[00:17:52] [SPEAKER_01]: how to formulate like i already figured out how to make a good product but i really learned leaned in

[00:17:58] [SPEAKER_01]: a lot of the you know spoke the spoke the speak uh well i'll talk the talk sort of stuff

[00:18:05] [SPEAKER_01]: um i've gotten into forums and just like i went to conferences and really just learned a lot about

[00:18:12] [SPEAKER_01]: what that takes that said you know we're still in that battle trying to explain to people

[00:18:19] [SPEAKER_01]: what does it like why this is like this is something they can use and well i think i just chose

[00:18:26] [SPEAKER_01]: the hardest industry because you want to tell you want to tell anybody with curly hair what to do

[00:18:31] [SPEAKER_01]: with their hair no no no no they've got like 20 different regimens already so that said if anybody

[00:18:37] [SPEAKER_01]: is a great market or wants to help me out or wants to help you manifest 50 or 100k marketing test you

[00:18:45] [SPEAKER_00]: know you got my information no i i had to ask that because i as someone who has worked in

[00:18:55] [SPEAKER_00]: industry there was many moons ago but i was in there and i know what you're talking about when

[00:18:59] [SPEAKER_00]: it comes to the shimmy manufacturers and just how difficult it is period and like i said i've never

[00:19:06] [SPEAKER_00]: seen a product like yours before and i'm excited for you and i knew i had to have you on the show

[00:19:13] [SPEAKER_00]: because i know it's just gonna be a matter of time before i blows up because i've never seen anything

[00:19:19] [SPEAKER_00]: like that i it is very innovative and i've seen your videos you're very personable and i'm not

[00:19:24] [SPEAKER_01]: saying all this like i really do believe that so you know okay i gotta say i think you are the

[00:19:32] [SPEAKER_01]: infusion of faith that i needed yeah i've had some weird conversations where you know you just go

[00:19:39] [SPEAKER_01]: wow i don't know why i'm doing this right like there's there's not a dirt or like lack of

[00:19:47] [SPEAKER_01]: hair care products out there oh yeah there's a lot of i would say a lot of them just don't work well

[00:19:53] [SPEAKER_01]: that's that there's not a lack of it so i am shouting into the void like this is one of

[00:19:58] [SPEAKER_01]: those things where like i have this weird like i'm hard to explain belief that this is needed

[00:20:07] [SPEAKER_01]: both from an access and confidence like especially if he started talking about travel sports

[00:20:13] [SPEAKER_01]: camping right yeah it would not be these things but then this is also one of those things

[00:20:19] [SPEAKER_01]: like if i'm making enough noise i'm gonna convince not only you but your your listeners and

[00:20:25] [SPEAKER_01]: everybody else that maybe that we think about hair care personal care and use it doesn't have to

[00:20:34] [SPEAKER_01]: be so hard or hard on the environment and so maybe you know maybe you need a lever

[00:20:40] [SPEAKER_01]: leans in a little bit more on their sustainability stuff right like that would be amazing you should

[00:20:46] [SPEAKER_01]: need my product it should just already be the step the standard yes that's so true and that's so

[00:20:53] [SPEAKER_01]: true so perk listen up you know come in co-invest indeed like with me that would yeah

[00:21:03] [SPEAKER_00]: that lets you that really work yes yes yes yes so you know you wear so many hats so i want to

[00:21:09] [SPEAKER_00]: kind of revisit some of the different components that you work in so um you're the founder of the

[00:21:16] [SPEAKER_00]: early hair reefing which we've already discussed a little bit but you're also a startup consultant

[00:21:20] [SPEAKER_00]: so how do you manage all of these different endeavors because there's only 24 hours in the day

[00:21:26] [SPEAKER_01]: and i'm assuming that you have to sleep sometime in there so yeah yes and so i have been learning a

[00:21:36] [SPEAKER_01]: lot about delegation yep guys huge that is huge i actually just brought on two virtual systems

[00:21:42] [SPEAKER_01]: they're wonderful and also really excited that they are a women of color because you know i feel like

[00:21:52] [SPEAKER_01]: they really get where i'm going and like the message i'm trying to put out there but that said yes

[00:21:59] [SPEAKER_01]: i'm learning a lot about delegation i also have been learning a lot about what seeds me right

[00:22:05] [SPEAKER_01]: and what my energy is there are things that i could be doing full force with the reefic but

[00:22:12] [SPEAKER_01]: i'm not the right person right it's only going to dream me and so you know i take my seasons with

[00:22:21] [SPEAKER_01]: the reefic about what i'll be doing and what i'll focus in on and say you know what that's okay

[00:22:26] [SPEAKER_01]: everything else has to be handled by someone else um that's especially important as an

[00:22:33] [SPEAKER_01]: as a born this phase where i'm you know getting a manufacturer up and running and so you know

[00:22:40] [SPEAKER_01]: what else am i gonna do i have like there's weeks in between when they send me versions of like

[00:22:45] [SPEAKER_01]: did we replicate it correctly and like what am I going to do oh i can go learn ticked off right

[00:22:51] [SPEAKER_01]: and and build myself up that way the other thing that has been really important in terms of

[00:22:57] [SPEAKER_01]: being able to manage my time is really recognizing that these things feed each other

[00:23:05] [SPEAKER_01]: they're that i learn from working on the reefic that keep me current with the things that i

[00:23:13] [SPEAKER_01]: need to consult on and there's things that i'm consulting on that keep uh current with the reefic

[00:23:18] [SPEAKER_01]: if i was just solely in either of those silos i i feel like maybe i wouldn't be as much value

[00:23:26] [SPEAKER_01]: or i'd always be playing catch up and so much so it's to be again recognizing what i'm good at

[00:23:33] [SPEAKER_00]: as compared to like trying to do all the things i love that answer so much and so what i got from

[00:23:39] [SPEAKER_00]: that is you have a very good gift of discernment so my that's what it sounds like to me so how

[00:23:46] [SPEAKER_00]: how do you know what to delegate and what you need to keep to yourself you know what i mean

[00:23:54] [SPEAKER_00]: because that's very hard because there's someone that's like type a i will admit it okay okay

[00:24:00] [SPEAKER_00]: like it's very hard for me to delegate so how do you know which which activities you need to

[00:24:08] [SPEAKER_01]: delegate and who to delegate those activities to okay so that is really the hardest part

[00:24:18] [SPEAKER_01]: and uh yeah i guess i'm still learning on this okay you know i recently joined a group and i'm

[00:24:25] [SPEAKER_01]: gonna plug somebody else and though they're not kidding me and i'm just learning their program

[00:24:30] [SPEAKER_01]: i am doing this group uh called hello seven it's actually uh a kind of like a support group

[00:24:40] [SPEAKER_01]: accountability group that is like related to a book called how to plan your year like a millionaire

[00:24:47] [SPEAKER_01]: and they all start another call like we should all be millionaires and i'm like yes i want more of that

[00:24:53] [SPEAKER_01]: but uh it was something that just really struck me and i literally screenshot it and sent it

[00:25:00] [SPEAKER_01]: to everybody was you should be picking one thing a day that you can delegate and i have been deciding

[00:25:09] [SPEAKER_01]: that that is whatever is the thing that's like holding everything up right there are things where

[00:25:15] [SPEAKER_01]: like i just like i need to make a decision on something i need to set something up well if i can't do

[00:25:23] [SPEAKER_01]: that if i can't do that right away if somehow i'm the only one that could do that but it's not

[00:25:29] [SPEAKER_01]: in really like my skill set or passion or at least the thing that i'm gonna do with a lacquerty like someone

[00:25:34] [SPEAKER_01]: asking i'm like yes i'm not only did you ask me it's already done that's something i should be

[00:25:41] [SPEAKER_01]: delegating right i'm just getting better at that i'm not perfect and i've also been giving

[00:25:49] [SPEAKER_01]: myself some grace of doing that takes a lot of time so for the virtual assistance for instance

[00:25:55] [SPEAKER_01]: that i brought in i'm due test right like i'll bring a couple on at a time i'll give them

[00:26:02] [SPEAKER_01]: all projects that you know or maybe the beginning of a bigger workflow and i'm like okay succeeded

[00:26:09] [SPEAKER_01]: at that succeeded at that um you know i'll give feedback do they get better then i'll give them access

[00:26:16] [SPEAKER_01]: then i'm like look i just kind of at one point want to be able to say here's what i want to do

[00:26:22] [SPEAKER_01]: and in this period of her name i'm gonna paint it done i'm gonna tell you when i'm going to do

[00:26:27] [SPEAKER_01]: that in the overall vision you figure out the best most efficient system to help me get to that

[00:26:35] [SPEAKER_01]: outcome and go uh some people feel at that but like you just need to be able to get those people

[00:26:44] [SPEAKER_01]: in your life um and pay them accordingly right it's it's not cheap but like i have to then

[00:26:54] [SPEAKER_00]: calculate what's the cost of not getting that done i don't say i say opportunity cost yep opportunity

[00:27:00] [SPEAKER_00]: call right there right there which again i had to ask you that because it's someone who again type

[00:27:07] [SPEAKER_00]: a right here it's been interesting trying to do some of that delegation as well because i've got

[00:27:13] [SPEAKER_00]: someone that's like a designer now and you know like all that stuff is great so yeah i had to ask

[00:27:18] [SPEAKER_01]: that question so what you got if you're typing you found someone good also let's do some sharing

[00:27:23] [SPEAKER_01]: of resources yes i always ask you but i guess so who are you really using over there because like

[00:27:30] [SPEAKER_01]: you know like can't kick yes that definitely ask your friends who they are yes yes that it

[00:27:37] [SPEAKER_00]: that is so true so true so what other barriers because again as a startup consultant that's a whole

[00:27:44] [SPEAKER_00]: another set of complexity to your life right so what have been some of the barriers that you've

[00:27:50] [SPEAKER_00]: encountered in being a startup consultant i'm sure i probably know a couple of them yes yes so one

[00:28:00] [SPEAKER_01]: of the biggest barriers is just um getting people to realize that they they need help it in which form

[00:28:08] [SPEAKER_01]: right i i think i usually get that text message uh when it's already blowing up right you're

[00:28:18] [SPEAKER_01]: they've got a processor for context here you'll i do uh start up consulting in operations but

[00:28:26] [SPEAKER_01]: really in HR and i do what i like to call a little bit of sweet sweet therapy i'm actually

[00:28:34] [SPEAKER_01]: listening to entrepreneurs uh say you know that like maybe it's the CEO or the CEO or something

[00:28:41] [SPEAKER_01]: and they're telling me what has gone down in their company and how they need help they are already

[00:28:47] [SPEAKER_01]: in 90% of the situations know what to do they just kind of want to hear me tell i give them

[00:28:55] [SPEAKER_01]: the my templates tell them what's you know how i would approach it and then they're kind of asking

[00:29:01] [SPEAKER_01]: for permission right the same thing a lot of us do if you go to therapy or you go to coaching

[00:29:05] [SPEAKER_01]: your sort of asking for permission or talking it through the themselves but the whole thing would not

[00:29:12] [SPEAKER_01]: have gotten this far if 24 hours a week two weeks ahead of time they had said um that looks

[00:29:22] [SPEAKER_01]: like there this sounds like a train's coming my way it's like sort of like and but let it

[00:29:29] [SPEAKER_01]: it's that they kind of stand there on the tracks waiting for it to happen but guys if just like

[00:29:35] [SPEAKER_01]: if you hear a train coming your way you either then you're standing on tracks you know to move

[00:29:39] [SPEAKER_01]: if you hear a train coming your way and you're like there's new trains in this neighborhood you

[00:29:44] [SPEAKER_01]: know what sort of tornado take cover get like do something about it don't wait um and wait

[00:29:51] [SPEAKER_01]: really wish that like folks recognize that earlier because we could have so much better outcomes

[00:29:58] [SPEAKER_01]: and then also you know and and not have to you know do as much work but that's the hardest thing

[00:30:05] [SPEAKER_01]: finding it folks to understand like hey you know like cool totally got totally fixed at this time but

[00:30:12] [SPEAKER_01]: like we could talk more we could talk healthier you you know you know my phone number you found

[00:30:19] [SPEAKER_00]: it at 2 a.m. like yeah but you know what what what do you believe prevents people

[00:30:26] [SPEAKER_00]: from being proactive you know what I mean like what do you believe prevents them from being proactive

[00:30:32] [SPEAKER_00]: and trying instead of waiting till 2 a.m. to contact you.

[00:30:37] [SPEAKER_01]: Miss Concert Faith.

[00:30:41] [SPEAKER_01]: I am like ulcer someone who like and ask her I'm like well there's like five things that could go wrong

[00:30:49] [SPEAKER_01]: and you know what Jesus take the wheel I'm just gonna believe that this one's gonna resolve itself

[00:30:58] [SPEAKER_01]: and quite honestly I'll be surprised how many times that like Jesus does resolve it

[00:31:06] [SPEAKER_01]: there's times where I'm like oh you want me to yeah yeah right like I show out like

[00:31:17] [SPEAKER_01]: there is a little bit of that like I think there's just like this misconstrued faith there's so

[00:31:21] [SPEAKER_01]: much going on and there's I'll be quite honest there are just days and weeks where like I just

[00:31:28] [SPEAKER_01]: kind of roll over on it and you know I actually told one of my marketing consultants last week

[00:31:36] [SPEAKER_01]: I was like I read your email first thing in the morning and I just literally rolled back over

[00:31:44] [SPEAKER_01]: and went to sleep out of like out of a little bit of anxiety right like so much to do

[00:31:51] [SPEAKER_01]: and that was also enough of itself like proof to me that I needed to delegate it right like

[00:31:56] [SPEAKER_01]: I felt disempowered to really make a big change I was the only person who could

[00:32:02] [SPEAKER_01]: technically answer the question wasn't really true someone else could have been like

[00:32:07] [SPEAKER_01]: yep go ahead and do that sure like it was just yes or no or a go make a new video answer

[00:32:16] [SPEAKER_00]: but I was just like I'm you know yeah now I get it I get it I mean you have so much on your

[00:32:24] [SPEAKER_00]: plate I mean I just I don't know I like how do you juggle all that though like to you do

[00:32:32] [SPEAKER_00]: here's the thing I understand you do the delegation do you also like self-educate too

[00:32:41] [SPEAKER_00]: in order to help you reduce time in certain aspects of your business

[00:32:47] [SPEAKER_01]: yes I would have to say this is again one of those things I'm still very much learning and

[00:32:53] [SPEAKER_01]: I wish that I can cut more things out that said you know one of the things like I'm

[00:33:02] [SPEAKER_01]: leaning in on learning TikTok okay I spent like two years really like working with some marketing

[00:33:10] [SPEAKER_01]: consultants that just did not work for me like handing over just boat loads and boats and money

[00:33:17] [SPEAKER_01]: to realize that he didn't really understand how to like win at certain games you know and that's not

[00:33:25] [SPEAKER_01]: to not get everyone that I've worked with right like you're brilliant all in their own right

[00:33:30] [SPEAKER_01]: there are some that have really taken me really far but in terms of like just trying to get certain

[00:33:37] [SPEAKER_01]: opponents of marketing to work I was like oh I'm going to need to lean in a lot more and educate

[00:33:44] [SPEAKER_01]: myself so that I can contract people from a position of strength and knowledge and you know

[00:33:52] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm working with someone right now her name is Mariah absolutely brilliant because she's telling

[00:33:57] [SPEAKER_01]: me what I need to do also as I'm learning she's like she just sends me like a script she's like

[00:34:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Tony I hear what's hot on TikTok right now and you two seconds this the second of this the

[00:34:07] [SPEAKER_01]: second of this and I work with that and she lets me know why it's going to work so that

[00:34:14] [SPEAKER_01]: I may better fly in so I would also say that's huge right as you're trying to figure out what to move

[00:34:19] [SPEAKER_01]: in what to do out sort of finding people who are going to educate you back about what it why

[00:34:25] [SPEAKER_01]: something's going to work or why it's not working has been huge so that like I can further

[00:34:32] [SPEAKER_01]: delegate right so feel like we just have like a few more things to tweak and then like I can

[00:34:39] [SPEAKER_01]: hand it kind of fully off to her but again manifest 50 to 100k I'm just going to be literally

[00:34:45] [SPEAKER_00]: be like and here's the budget and then you know I do it oh my goodness oh my goodness so you know

[00:34:57] [SPEAKER_00]: we are in 2024 today is literally at what yesterday was day one hundred of 365 by the way

[00:35:06] [SPEAKER_00]: crazy today is 101 insane right so if you had to choose one word to represent your goals for this year

[00:35:14] [SPEAKER_01]: what would it be and why I did not think hard enough about this question ahead of time

[00:35:25] [SPEAKER_01]: okay okay okay okay okay okay I you know honestly that is what I am working towards

[00:35:37] [SPEAKER_01]: throughout the year I have some really ambitious goals but sort of as you've talked about like can

[00:35:44] [SPEAKER_01]: where all these hats which one do I need to double down on where where in my businesses

[00:35:54] [SPEAKER_01]: do I select what I need to be doing versus what other people need to be doing and that's really

[00:36:02] [SPEAKER_01]: the clarity that I'm seeking for myself and then also for like these brands right like clarity

[00:36:09] [SPEAKER_01]: in terms of who this audience is I may you know this is something where I think we're going to

[00:36:16] [SPEAKER_01]: have to just keep like chipping away at the at the mountain people are used to the you know they're

[00:36:24] [SPEAKER_01]: used to do and what they've been doing for literally decades I'm coming in trying to change that

[00:36:32] [SPEAKER_01]: all up but on the flip side I've been a you know clean beauty fairs where you know one

[00:36:40] [SPEAKER_01]: and ten people who walk through the door of the fair ended up purchasing something from me

[00:36:46] [SPEAKER_01]: right like I'm getting really clear on who that audience is and I'm like you know I've got to respond

[00:36:52] [SPEAKER_01]: to some folks sorry if I haven't responded yet but I'm getting some level letters now from that

[00:36:58] [SPEAKER_01]: fair people have tried the product and been like you mean something that looks like I can add

[00:37:07] [SPEAKER_01]: donut yeah can clean my hair and it feels good what which way but time you let's talk more

[00:37:17] [SPEAKER_01]: right like those are great conversations to have but I had to find someone who's open to receiving

[00:37:24] [SPEAKER_01]: a little bit of my a little bit of my quirkiness a little bit of my love so that's just you know

[00:37:30] [SPEAKER_01]: and being really clear that's okay like forget everybody else who's where they are that's you know

[00:37:36] [SPEAKER_01]: just like food just like being in a relationship not everybody's for you and I'm getting really

[00:37:43] [SPEAKER_00]: clear on that I love that I love that so much so last but not least what is the best piece of

[00:37:50] [SPEAKER_00]: advice that you have for women who want to start their own company do you something that you're

[00:37:58] [SPEAKER_01]: love yeah great like I oddly love this right I was never glam girl right like half my makeup

[00:38:11] [SPEAKER_01]: is actually thanks to the fact that I have a friend I was like literally she has a makeup business

[00:38:19] [SPEAKER_01]: that like is going bananas and I'm like well great because I love your eyeshadow thank you very much

[00:38:27] [SPEAKER_01]: I've never been a glam girl I never really thought I was never really into my hair right I just

[00:38:34] [SPEAKER_01]: like maybe not been a pony tail all the time but the tinkering the stirring the discovery the

[00:38:44] [SPEAKER_01]: sensory of it is super fun and then that being able to like talk to somebody about it and like

[00:38:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Karol I'm just gonna make this easy for you right or someone tells me about like a problem

[00:39:00] [SPEAKER_01]: that they have and then they start getting like really complicated talking about

[00:39:04] [SPEAKER_01]: porosity in this and that I'm like it's not that common and then they give me that look of like

[00:39:12] [SPEAKER_01]: you mean it can be simple easier and I'm like yeah quite honestly like and again a lot

[00:39:18] [SPEAKER_01]: of that stuff is barely but if you're like me over well me so that's just like they're so

[00:39:26] [SPEAKER_01]: much joy in that marketing marketing stresses me out so I'm not doing some of that stuff

[00:39:33] [SPEAKER_01]: but yeah that would be my number one advice find something that you feel joy and and that like

[00:39:38] [SPEAKER_01]: there is something bigger than making money that you're trying to do because that's the thing

[00:39:45] [SPEAKER_01]: that's gonna go when someone tells you like that your product is terrible or I had someone cryo

[00:39:51] [SPEAKER_01]: over shampoo literally cryo over shampoo hmm can go he it's not me this is a bigger conversation

[00:40:04] [SPEAKER_01]: you know you gotta kind of let some of that stuff be teflon off yeah it's hard because I went home

[00:40:10] [SPEAKER_01]: cryo too because there's so many but like you need to be able to be in those conversation so

[00:40:16] [SPEAKER_01]: find something you can enjoy folk else something that's bigger than you and that you could just kind

[00:40:22] [SPEAKER_01]: of just like yeah like this this thing can be your release as well as your money maker

[00:40:30] [SPEAKER_00]: I love that so much I love that so much and honestly listening to you

[00:40:37] [SPEAKER_00]: describe everything you just said is why I started this podcast too honestly it has been

[00:40:43] [SPEAKER_00]: it is my joy I enjoy connecting with people sharing my platform to make sure that I'm

[00:40:49] [SPEAKER_00]: doing my part to elevate people that I think not think that I know my audience would benefit from

[00:40:55] [SPEAKER_00]: and that I know are going places that I have everything you just said reminded me of why I do this

[00:41:02] [SPEAKER_01]: totally I love it I mean it's totally talk more so many things I love

[00:41:07] [SPEAKER_01]: you know uh this is fun thank you for letting me geek out about it's very I you know let's be honest

[00:41:17] [SPEAKER_01]: there's a little quirky this is a little odd but like I love it see the ocean I love it I love it
