Well, welcome everyone.
00:00:46
I'm your host, Jacqui Adewole, and this is the Bible Basics
00:00:50
Podcast, where weekly, we break down the basics of the Bible
00:00:55
into understandable, bite-sized chunks.
00:00:58
I'm thrilled to share that I've almost completed reading the
00:01:05
Bible in 365 days.
00:01:07
Though this isn't my first time .
00:01:09
It is something I once thought was impossible.
00:01:12
It's been a transformative experience, and I'm here to help
00:01:18
you make your own plan to do that for 2025.
00:01:22
So in today's episode, we'll cover why committing to Bible
00:01:27
reading is so impactful, how to choose the right plan for you,
00:01:33
seven practical tips to build a lasting habit that fits your
00:01:37
life, and we'll wrap up with tools and resources to make your
00:01:42
journey smoother.
00:01:43
Now that we've mapped out what we'll cover today, let's start
00:01:47
with the heart of it all why committing to Bible reading is
00:01:51
so important.
00:01:52
Understanding the why gives purpose to your commitment and
00:01:56
fuels your motivation to stick with it throughout the year.
00:02:00
We should read and study the Bible because it's God's Word to
00:02:05
us.
00:02:05
The Bible is literally God-breathed.
00:02:10
That's 2 Timothy 3:16.
00:02:12
In other words, it's God's very words to us.
00:02:16
If we want to live life to the fullest, as God intended, we
00:02:20
must listen to and heed God's written Word.
00:02:24
I've experienced many challenges during this past year
00:02:29
and the number one thing that's gotten me through is listening
00:02:36
to and heeding God's word.
00:02:38
And making the decision to engage with God's word is more
00:02:45
than just setting a goal.
00:02:46
It's a commitment to prioritize your spiritual growth and
00:02:51
invite God to shape your life.
00:02:53
Think about it this way when you commit to reading the Bible,
00:02:57
you're choosing to spend intentional time with the
00:03:01
creator of the universe every day.
00:03:04
That's powerful and, just like any important commitment,
00:03:09
whether it's a relationship, a job or a skill you're developing
00:03:14
, it takes focus and determination, and the benefits
00:03:19
of reading consistently are plenty.
00:03:21
It enhances your mental health, your relationships, habits and
00:03:29
spiritual life.
00:03:30
And there's one huge outcome of Bible reading that really shook
00:03:35
me Christians who don't spend time in the Bible regularly,
00:03:41
meaning at least four days a week, live lives that look
00:03:45
statistically the same as people who aren't Christians at all.
00:03:49
Can you believe that?
00:03:52
If you want to dig deeper into the benefits of reading the
00:03:55
Bible, check out the episode before this one.
00:03:58
The link is in the show notes.
00:04:01
Now, before we dive into the seven practical tips, let's talk
00:04:06
about the most important first step, and that's prayer.
00:04:10
Making a commitment to read the Bible starts with inviting God
00:04:14
into the process.
00:04:14
Making a commitment to read the Bible starts with inviting God
00:04:16
into the process.
00:04:17
Ask God for guidance as you decide what your 2025 Bible
00:04:21
reading journey will look like.
00:04:22
Pray for clarity, lord.
00:04:26
What do you want me to focus on this year?
00:04:29
Pray for wisdom.
00:04:30
Help me choose a plan that's right for my current season of
00:04:35
life.
00:04:35
Pray for commitment.
00:04:38
Give me the strength and discipline to stay faithful even
00:04:43
on busy days.
00:04:44
And once you've made your decision, carry prayer into your
00:04:49
daily readings.
00:04:50
Before you open your Bible each day, pause and ask God to open
00:04:55
your heart and mind to his word.
00:04:57
Lord, speak to me today through your word.
00:05:08
Help me to understand and apply what I read.
00:05:12
After praying for God's guidance , the next step is to choose a
00:05:14
reading plan.
00:05:14
A reading plan is basically a list of what you'll read each
00:05:16
day.
00:05:16
A reading plan helps you stay organized and ensures you're
00:05:19
moving through scripture in a way that works for your life.
00:05:23
There are so many plans to choose from, and the key is
00:05:28
finding one that fits your goals and this season of your life.
00:05:32
There are whole Bible plans Great.
00:05:36
If you want the big picture view, these can be 365-day plans
00:05:41
or even accelerated 90-day plans.
00:05:44
I read the Bible with a group from my church using the 90-day
00:05:48
plan at the beginning of the COVID pandemic, and then there's
00:05:52
a one testament at a time plan.
00:05:54
That's perfect.
00:05:55
If you want to go deeper into the Old or New Testament, I read
00:06:00
the New Testament in 2023.
00:06:02
Then there are chronological plans.
00:06:06
These follow the events of the Bible in historical order,
00:06:11
offering a unique perspective.
00:06:13
That's what I'm doing now.
00:06:14
Then there are topical plans.
00:06:18
These give you the opportunity to dive into themes like prayer,
00:06:22
wisdom or the life of Jesus.
00:06:25
Whatever plan you choose, make sure it's manageable for your
00:06:30
schedule and don't hesitate to adjust it if your first choice
00:06:35
just doesn't feel right.
00:06:38
With a clear plan in place, the next step is building habits
00:06:42
that make reading the Bible a consistent part of your life.
00:06:46
That's where these seven practical tips come in.
00:06:49
Tip number one start small.
00:06:52
Don't overwhelm yourself.
00:06:55
Begin with 10 minutes a day or one chapter.
00:06:59
Consistency is more important than volume.
00:07:04
Tip two attach it to a routine.
00:07:08
Pair your Bible reading with habits you already have like
00:07:14
reading while you drink your morning coffee, listening to an
00:07:18
audio Bible during your commute, reflecting on a passage before
00:07:23
bedtime.
00:07:24
And you might be wondering well , what if I fall behind?
00:07:28
Let me reassure you.
00:07:30
This isn't about perfection.
00:07:33
If you miss a day, don't give up.
00:07:35
Just pick up where you left off .
00:07:42
Consistency over time is what matters.
00:07:48
Tip number three is prepare your environment.
00:07:50
Keep your Bible or your app easily accessible.
00:07:52
Set reminders on your phone, eliminate distractions.
00:07:58
Tip number four track your progress.
00:08:03
Use a journal or an app, or even a simple calendar.
00:08:08
Tracking your reading feels rewarding and motivates you to
00:08:13
keep going.
00:08:14
And speaking of keeping going, tip number five is to celebrate
00:08:19
wins.
00:08:19
Every milestone is worth celebrating.
00:08:23
Did you complete a whole week?
00:08:26
Did you finish a book?
00:08:28
Celebrate Recognizing progress keeps you motivated.
00:08:36
Tip number six accountability and encouragement.
00:08:39
Making a commitment to read is easier when you have support.
00:08:45
Share your plan.
00:08:47
Tell a friend or family member about your goal and ask them to
00:08:51
check in with you.
00:08:52
Join a group.
00:08:54
A Bible study group or online community can provide
00:08:59
encouragement and accountability .
00:09:02
Use encouraging resources.
00:09:05
Podcasts, devotionals and forums can inspire and keep you
00:09:12
on track.
00:09:14
And tip seven, the power of prayer and God's word.
00:09:18
As you embark on this journey, remember that you're not doing
00:09:23
this alone.
00:09:23
God is with you every step of the way.
00:09:27
Each time you open the Bible, you're inviting him to speak
00:09:33
into your life.
00:09:34
Psalm, chapter 119, verse 105, reminds us your word is a lamp
00:09:42
to my feet and a light to my path.
00:09:45
No matter where you are in life , god's word has something to
00:09:50
offer Encouragement, wisdom, guidance and hope.
00:09:58
