But while David was a man after God's own heart, he was also

flawed.

Today we'll uncover the layers of David's life, his greatest
00:00:41
victories, his greatest victories and his most painful
00:00:50
failures.

Goliath, while someone else noted that we didn't mention

that David authored many of the Psalms.

So today we're dedicating this episode to David's life,

exploring his journey from shepherd to king and taking a
00:01:50
closer look at what makes him such a central figure in the
00:01:54
Bible.

Let's start with the basics.

David was the youngest son of Jesse from the tribe of Judah.
00:02:02
Growing up in Bethlehem, David was responsible for tending his
00:02:08
family's sheep.
00:02:09
As the youngest, he wasn't anyone's first pick for a
00:02:13
significant role, at least not in human terms.
00:02:17
But God saw him differently.
00:02:20
In 1 Samuel 16, the prophet Samuel is sent by God to anoint
00:02:26
the next king of Israel.
00:02:27
Although Saul is still on the throne, he's lost God's favor
00:02:33
due to disobedience.
00:02:34
So Samuel visits Jesse's family to find Saul's successor.
00:02:39
When Samuel first sees Jesse's oldest sons, he was impressed by
00:02:46
their appearance and strength.
00:02:47
But God reminds him Eventually they call for David, the
00:03:07
youngest son, who's out tending sheep.
00:03:10
And right there God makes his choice known and Samuel anoints
00:03:16
David as the future king.
00:03:18
This choice was definitely unexpected.
00:03:21
First of all, he was the youngest, though it was
00:03:25
tradition that the oldest son received the best blessings.
00:03:29
However, God's favor and choice often fell on the youngest and
00:03:35
the least.
00:03:35
He chose Isaac over his older brother, Ishmael, Jacob over
00:03:41
Esau and Gideon over his older brothers From the beginning.

David's story shows us that God's criteria for choosing
00:03:52
people are often different from ours.
00:03:58
One of the most famous moments in David's life, and the one a
00:04:02
faithful listener asked about, is the story of David and
00:04:06
Goliath found in 1 Samuel 17.
00:04:09
This story has become a classic symbol of courage and faith,
00:04:15
and it's easy to see why it's so well loved.
00:04:19
At this point, David is still a young shepherd and he's sent by
00:04:25
his father to bring food to his brothers on the battlefield.
00:04:28
When he arrives, he finds the Israelites locked in a standoff
00:04:33
with the Philistine army.
00:04:35
A giant Philistine warrior named Goliath has been taunting
00:04:40
the Israelite soldiers, challenging them to send someone
00:04:45
to fight him.
00:04:45
Goliath's size and strength would terrify anyone, but not
00:04:52
David.
00:04:52
David's outraged that Goliath would defy the armies of the
00:04:57
living God.
00:04:58
Despite being young and inexperienced as a soldier, he
00:05:03
volunteers to take on Goliath.
00:05:06
His confidence doesn't come from his physical strength but
00:05:10
from his trust in God, and he tells King Saul the Lord, who
00:05:16
rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear,
00:05:21
will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.
00:05:24
That's 1 Samuel 17: 37.

Armed with only a sling and five smooth stones, David faces
00:05:34
Goliath and defeats him with a single stone to the forehead.
00:05:39
This victory over Goliath marks David's transition from a
00:05:46
humble shepherd to a hero in Israel.
00:05:49
While it's easy to think David's bravery made the
00:05:53
difference in this case, david himself repeatedly stated that
00:05:58
his strength, boldness and energy were from God.

He also said that his goal was to glorify God's name.
00:06:07
So this battle wasn't about David's bravery.
00:06:11
It's a moment where David's faith in God sets him apart and
00:06:17
hints at his future as Israel's leader.

After David's stunning victory over Goliath, his popularity
00:06:32
soared, but it also stirred up jealousy in Saul.

When David returned from battle , the women of Israel came out
00:06:36
to celebrate singing Saul has slain his thousands and David
00:06:41
his tens of thousands.
00:06:43
This chant ignited Saul's anger and from that moment he saw
00:06:49
David as a threat.
00:06:50
Saul attempted to kill David multiple times, forcing David to
00:06:56
live as a fugitive, hiding in caves and seeking refuge
00:07:01
wherever he could.
00:07:02
Despite the danger and hardship , david didn't give in to fear
00:07:07
or despair.
00:07:09
It was during these years of hiding that he wrote many of the
00:07:12
Psalms, pouring out his heart to God in songs and prayers.

One powerful example is Psalm 57, written while David was
00:07:22
fleeing from Saul.
00:07:23
Quote have mercy on me, my God.
00:07:28
Have mercy on me, for in you I take refuge.
00:07:32
I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the
00:07:37
disaster has passed.
00:07:39
That's the first verse of Psalm 57.

These psalms reveal David's deep trust in God, even in the
00:07:47
midst of his darkest moments.
00:07:50
David's psalms are a lasting part of his legacy, showing a
00:07:57
man who turned to God in every circumstance fear, hope and even
00:08:03
repentance.

Fun fact of the 150 Psalms, david is credited with writing

at least 75.

They are a window into his him.

David refused to retaliate Twice .

He had the chance to take Saul's life, once in a cave 1

Yet both times David spared Saul, refusing to harm the

Lord's anointed.

This showed David's deep reverence for God's authority,

respecting Saul's position as God's chosen king.

Eventually, saul died in battle and David was anointed king
00:09:11
over all Israel.
00:09:12
He established Jerusalem as the capital and brought the Ark of
00:09:17
the Covenant there, making it the religious heart of the
00:09:21
nation.

Now, what's the Ark of the Covenant?

It was a sacred chest covered in gold, about four feet by two
00:09:31
feet, and it held the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments,
00:09:35
Aaron's rod and a jar of manna.
00:09:39
The Ark symbolized God's presence among his people and
00:09:45
his covenant with Israel.
00:09:46
It was kept in the most holy place of the tabernacle and
00:09:52
later in the temple, reminding the Israelites of God's mercy
00:09:57
and faithfulness.

But David's story isn't just one of victories and worship.

It also includes some deeply human failures.

One of the most well-known of these occurs in 2 Samuel 11,

when David sins with Bathsheba While his army was off at war.

David sees Bathsheba, the wife of one of his soldiers.

makes a series of tragic choices that lead to adultery, deceit

David's story, however, doesn't end with his mistakes.

He continues to seek God and remains a significant figure in

Later in David's reign, after he had secured many victories

and established Jerusalem as the capital, something changed.

He decided to take a census of Israel's military, wanting to

know just how strong his forces were.

Even his commander, joab, warned him about it, sensing

this wasn't about strategy but pride.

David ignored the warning, counting his troops and placing
00:12:32
his trust in numbers rather than in God.

But soon David realized his mistake.

God's judgment followed and in his sorrow, david repented,
00:12:45
reminding us that true strength comes from trusting in the Lord,

not in our own resources, not in our own resources.

As we reflect on David's legacy and final years, it's important

to note how he's described in the New Testament.

In Acts 13:22, Paul speaks of David as a man after God's own

Despite his many flaws, including sins like adultery and

murder, David had a unique relationship with God.

What set him apart wasn't his perfection but his response when

Unlike Saul, who often denied his wrongdoings, david openly

confessed and sought God's forgiveness.

His deep sorrow and repentance are beautifully expressed in

Psalms like 51 and 32, where David pleads for mercy and

acknowledges his guilt.

This tender heart towards God, even in failure, is a key aspect

of his legacy.

David's life was also marked by deep devotion to others, like

Now I'd be remiss if I didn't touch on the Davidic covenant, a

After David established Jerusalem as the capital and

As David's life drew to a close , he turned his attention to the

He prepared his son, solomon, to succeed him as king and began

gathering materials for the construction of the temple, a

task God had assigned to Solomon .

David's final years were filled with reflection and preparation

as he passed on his faith, wisdom and resources to the next

generation.

David remains one of Israel's greatest kings, remembered not
00:15:54
only for his military victories and his leadership, but for his
00:15:59
profound devotion to God, beautifully captured in the

Psalms.

These songs still inspire us today, connecting with people
