This week we tie it all together with the 3rd and final episode in our series. Join us as we see how God gives a picture of His promise in the salvation of the Israelites from Egypt...and how Jesus shows Himself as the fulfillment of that promise during His last Passover meal with the disciples.
[00:00:00] Well hello everyone, we are back. Welcome back to seeing God in the everyday. Hey honey. Hey babe. How are you doing? Tired but okay. It's been a little bit busy two weeks
[00:00:35] but it's been a good time and we got a lot of good things talking about this week because this is passion week or resurrection week or Easter week or whatever. Pick your tradition to call it.
[00:00:53] There's plenty of different names for this week but it's definitely for Christians and for now Jews this week as they had Passover on Saturday. This is a busy time on that calendar so
[00:01:07] a lot of cool things happening, a lot of cool things going down and we want to just first of all thank you so much for watching. Thank you so much for being a part of this podcast and listening. I know we say this
[00:01:20] every week but it's an encouragement to us but it's also helps get this out there. If you could copy paste whatever you need to do to let people know that you're listening this podcast and that you're
[00:01:33] getting something out of it. Please leave us a message. Please put a comment down. We love that. It helps us tremendously like I said to get the word out of what we're doing and this kind of
[00:01:48] cool little ministry of seeing God in the everyday. We've had a couple things that we're we're probably going to talk about in the next few weeks some cool stuff that happened but this week we kind of
[00:01:59] we know we were long last week. We've spent last two weeks talking about Passover, kind of building up to this this week where we're going to talk about Jesus in the Passover
[00:02:12] and where do you find Jesus in the Passover and isn't it so cool? And we know the last couple weeks were long ago. Like that word this week and you like cool this week. Yeah it's cool. It's cool.
[00:02:22] It's cool. Yeah we're going to definitely talk about that. We know that this week we're going to make it a little bit lighter for you since last week we hit the hour mark hit
[00:02:34] the 60 minute mark so we're probably going to be a little bit shorter so we're just going to this week just focus on one thing and that is Jesus in the Passover. There's so much cool stuff.
[00:02:47] There's that word again. You know what I'm doing? I need to put a tally thing of every and when I do the post editing every time I say it cool. There's so much that is in scripture.
[00:02:59] A lot of times you get bogged down a lot of things. You know I mentioned last week that a lot of people get bogged down in the Old Testament because there is some heavy stuff in there.
[00:03:09] There are some names that are almost impossible to say words need vows and the English language and it's hard when they don't have vows. You know a lot of people push that off and a lot
[00:03:20] people push off the Jewish traditions and things like that because they don't understand them. The things that weren't excess were God laid down and said these were the things you're going to remember. These feasts, these events and a lot of times as Christians we kind of push those
[00:03:35] things away. So we're hoping over the last two weeks we kind of exposed you to the importance of those things that we are to remember in scripture. It's not Jewish traditions as much as
[00:03:51] they were things where God told us, biblically, that we should remember, that we should um well and there are encouragements you know when you can look back and go wow God says that he's
[00:04:03] the same yesterday today and forever and there's evidence of that you know it's it's exciting to go back and go this isn't just moldy old history books. This is where God interacted with
[00:04:16] humanity, showed us who he was, showed us how to look for him, told us what's important to remember so that we don't miss it when he does things that are obviously him if we just know him
[00:04:30] right it's exciting to see that and it's um you can miss that if you just look at it as oh well you know it's it's a bunch of long maims and hard stuff it's not it's the testimony of where God
[00:04:45] interacted with humanity. Right well and again it's one of the things that we love is to dive into the understanding of God's character and who he is and you see a lot of that through the
[00:04:58] Old Testament and how he deals with Israel, how he deals with Moses, how he dealt with Pharaoh. So you start to see things that make a whole lot more sense than the New Testament make a whole lot more understanding make a whole lot more understanding
[00:05:18] you know definitely add understanding to the things in the New Testament and that's kind of what we want to do tonight so we're gonna we're gonna use the Passover and what we've been explaining for the last two weeks and kind of talk about how Jesus was the fulfillment
[00:05:36] of the Passover because the Passover is a big deal. The Passover was not only like we said something that was supposed to be remembered by the Jews and it's something they celebrate yearly but it's also something that Jesus celebrated and we're gonna talk about that
[00:05:53] because in every one of the gospels the gospel writers explain the Passover and how Jesus had Passover with his disciples you know and I'm a list he's real quick so here's what we're
[00:06:05] gonna do we don't want to bog you down with a bunch of references because they're from different gospels each gospel writer focuses on different things because of their personality and because of their audience so we didn't want to bog you down within this gospel this chapter in verse
[00:06:24] this writer said we want to give you the opportunity to go read it in depth and we can't cut if we're gonna make this one a short one tonight we can cover all of the references ourselves so yeah so let's and Matthew 26 and 28 are Matthew 26 through 28 mark 14 through 16
[00:06:43] Luke 22 through 24 and John has the biggest one it's 13 through 20 those are chapters okay so if you want to go through and read they do say a lot of things identical I mean you can tell
[00:07:01] it was word for word for what was being said but then again you also see the individual writers their their personality and also the audience they're writing to comes out and how the gospel presents the situation so that's where you're gonna find this story is in those four
[00:07:21] gospels and in those chapters right now in the days just before Jesus died he started talking about different things he started talking about his body being the temple he started talking about
[00:07:37] how he was gonna be handed over and all these different things and he was starting to kind of prepare the disciples for what was to come and more than that he was also preparing the
[00:07:51] people at large and the authorities both religious and governmental he was making statements very publicly about what was going to come what was going to happen to him it was causing a lot of concern
[00:08:07] and unrest among the authorities of the day yes yes and it was it was coming to a head yes and it was it was definitely getting to that point where people were taking notice from the
[00:08:23] triumphal entry to what was happening in the temple all these things were kind of building and getting momentum to something that was coming up and what was coming up was Passover um we know for reading these gospels that they celebrated Passover on the night before Jesus was
[00:08:46] right actually it was the same night it was later it was it was earlier that night Jesus celebrates Passover with the disciples so we wanted to go through the different things that are actually
[00:08:59] listed in the Passover meal that are like displayed through those gospels so let's go ahead and start with the the the big one right off the bat that sacrificial lamb and the importance of
[00:09:15] that sacrificial lamb okay so we're gonna set this stage a little bit so everybody's in Jerusalem for the Passover this was this was the tradition right everybody all the Jews come into Jerusalem
[00:09:30] because this is where the sacrifices are made at the temple this is this is where we have our celebrations and so it's a crowded city and Jesus in the disciples were no different they had come
[00:09:40] into Jerusalem sometime before several days over the course of that time Jesus is preaching and teaching getting on the bad side of the authorities so they sit down at this meal if you'll
[00:09:56] remember in our study in Exodus the very first thing that was commanded on that last plague right the plague with the death of the firstborn the the thing that was to protect the Israelites the
[00:10:11] children of promise was the sacrificial lamb and there were some really important things you couldn't just take any old lamb it it had to be a spotless lamb it had to be without blemish
[00:10:26] and it was to be killed and the blood of that lamb was to be spread on the lintel and the door post so just let me give you a quick visual and it's it's gonna pop right out okay so they took
[00:10:40] they dipped his at branches into the blood and they put it on the lintel and the door posts look familiar so we've got the the killing the sacrificing of the lamb the placing of its blood
[00:10:58] on the lintel and the door posts and this is what causes the angel of death to pass over and pass by the firstborn of the children of promise right and we see all through scripture
[00:11:15] especially obviously in the New Testament we see in Revelation where Jesus has talked about as the spotless lamb there's countless well they're not countless but there are there are many prophecies of the spotless lamb and the lamb who was going to be sacrificed and
[00:11:33] we know that Jesus was without spot or blemish we know that he was without sin and so he takes that place and that thing in the death angel the death as God comes over and takes the firstborn son
[00:11:49] we see that when Jesus on the cross and we put that death that spiritual death passes over and it's great incredible symbolism and it's where just in that first thing the lamb
[00:12:06] the the the base thing of Passover is so critical because it is the blood that is used and it also is the meal that is eaten right you know and Jesus talks about that later as well
[00:12:22] and you know when we talk about the meal that was the important thing that was the crux thing was that spotless lamb it had to be a lamb and it had to be shed blood to be the thing
[00:12:36] that took away the sins and covered up and the beautiful thing about that lamb is that yes it protected the children of promise but also had any of the Egyptian households followed the same
[00:12:52] guidelines had they had they obeyed what Jehovah God said their firstborn would have been spared as well and we see that in today that in the in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ it is all who would be obedient
[00:13:07] that that are covered right so the second thing and I'm going to bring the picture just up on the screen just for a second to show you so what we're going to be talking about are these elements
[00:13:18] that are on the plate except for one the thing that we're going to talk about next but these these elements on the past over plate that is kind of the elements that we're going to talk
[00:13:26] about so if you if you're kind of confused when we're talking about that this is what we're talking about and I'll bring this up a couple times so that you see that bone on the plate that is a lamb
[00:13:36] shank that is to commemorate the sacrifice of the lamb right okay right so the next thing we want to talk about is this thing of unleavened bread now again here's another symbol that symbolizes
[00:13:48] Jesus 11 is traditionally talked about as that it's sin right and when you cooked unleavened bread that means there's no yeast that makes the bread rise and if you remember from last week we talked
[00:14:01] about that they had to leave in a hurry so they couldn't let the bread rise they had to cook it and believe in it we actually have some of that and I'm going to pull out some here for you
[00:14:13] and show you some unleavened bread here you've all heard of it it's mata right so it's it's mata and it's it's available in most grocery stores now around past over time yeah this is the time
[00:14:24] you're that you can find it and I'm going to try let me see what I can do here let's see if I can make this look a little bit okay so that's that's it right there and this is one side of it
[00:14:38] and you will see this is the other side and you can see that it's got professions in it it's got some stripes on it and all those things symbolize something in Christ so
[00:14:52] what is that for on it? So it feels like it's relatively obvious okay this scripture says in the Old Testament that he would be pierced for our transgressions and that by his stripes
[00:15:07] we are healed this is this is how the unleavened bread has been cooked for time in memorial it is it is rolled out and it is pierced and it is grittled in a way that creates those stripes on it
[00:15:25] it's beautiful to me that the traditions of God's chosen people always pointed to Messiah that they the practices of the feast that God put in place and said remember this you need to know this
[00:15:41] it needs to be ingrained in you so that you'll see it when he comes all of the scriptures about whom Messiah would be they're symbolized in this months of bread in this unleavened bread he is
[00:15:57] pierced right with the nails through his hands he is striped in fact the the New Testament account says that he was beaten with those whips so fiercely after his arrest that he was unrecognizable
[00:16:13] and that is symbolized in this and the symbolism goes even farther during the Passover meal the Sator meal there are three pieces of this moths that are stacked together father son holy spirit
[00:16:28] the middle moths the one that represents the sun is removed at the beginning of the meal and it is broken and Christ even told his disciples this is my body that is broken for you
[00:16:46] right so as they're eating this Passover meal together the night of his arrest he's taking this meal and showing that he is fulfilling everything about this feast he is the fulfillment so
[00:17:00] this this is broken and what the piece that is broken part of it goes back into that stack okay of three the other piece of it is hidden away it is buried and the Passover meal is not
[00:17:18] complete until that hidden piece is found and returned so you see the burial in the resurrection of Jesus Christ pictured in the elements of this meal all right and it's even cool and the symbolism
[00:17:38] of the you send a child out to find right to find the hidden piece so they have to go and you send the children out to go look around for the hidden piece and when they find it they get a reward
[00:17:51] scripture says you know we must come to him like a child faith like a child right and when we find him we get the ultimate reward and again it's all those little tiny things
[00:18:02] that you see through this feast in this remembrance that just is so symbolic but it's also so impactful let's keep going here because we want to talk about the wine next and the wine is very
[00:18:20] important because that is one of the things that we remember in Jesus in the last supper is drinking the cup so the wine symbolizes four separate things and you're you actually
[00:18:34] partake of four separate cups in the Passover meal the first one is the cup of joy and again so much that is symbolized in that then the second one is the cup of sanctification and set apart
[00:18:52] or what we would even call would say holiness right the third cup is an important one this is the cup of deliverance and there's some really again we don't want to go in
[00:19:08] detail of all the things of it but every one of these cups you're drinking for a reason you're drinking this cup for a reason and then the last one is the cup of redemption where
[00:19:22] at the end you've gone through the plagues you've gone through everything and now you're drinking of that cup of redemption but again this is so important because of what Jesus does in the middle of
[00:19:36] the meal it says that he took the bread and broke it and he says this is my body broken for you gives that symbolism the moths the unleavened bread then he hands out the cup now what at what
[00:19:52] point does he drink this babe do you remember well all four times well yeah but he's when he mentions for this of it does not specifically say at which point in the meal it says towards the
[00:20:05] end of the meal so probably around deliverance or redemption he says this cup is the new covenant in my blood right and to remember me you know and so again even as Jehovah God commanded
[00:20:25] the Israelites to remember the Passover to observe this every single year as this Passover with his disciples is being eaten and as these cups of wine are being drunk he says this is the
[00:20:40] covenant in my blood this this wine is not just representative of what went before it is representative of who I am and what is to come and and he commands them to remember this yes even as the father
[00:20:56] commanded to remember this yeah and again that's another one of those symbolic things but one of those things that connect the two God told the Jews told these your lights to remember what I did
[00:21:10] for you at the Passover right by remembering this feast and Jesus uses the exact same words remember me when you drink of this cup and eat of this bread and what I'm doing for you
[00:21:24] again just just amazing continuity and beauty and everything well and I love how each each of those cups the cup of joy the cup of setting a part or holiness the cup of deliverance
[00:21:36] the cup of redemption it speaks to not only for the Israelites to be looking forward to their Messiah but it speaks to who Christ is what he accomplished and what his character is towards us
[00:21:50] you know it is in him that we have joy it is in him that we are set apart and made holy it is him that we are delivered from the bondage of sin that old you know we talked for two
[00:22:00] weeks about that old slavery to salvation cycle right it's it's him that delivers us from the slavery that we find ourselves in and it is him who redeems us who buys us back to the father yeah
[00:22:15] it's just awesome awesome stuff so as we're working our way here around the plate we're looking at some different things now we're we're looking at the bitter herbs and the salt water and the bitter herbs were simulating the harsh things it happened to them and the salt water
[00:22:33] were the tears of those now we see the same thing with what Christ goes through and even Jesus in the garden of the 70 he says God if you would take this cup from me this bitter cup from me
[00:22:50] you know and you see that he's cry and the sweat is like blood similar you know would easily be symbolized by the salt water and things like that and you see just the connection
[00:23:05] between the two is so beautiful right because you know this is a festival this is a feast this is a but it's a feast with remembering true event of hardship and pain and struggle just like
[00:23:21] when we remember the Lord's supper there's a remembrance of hardship and pain and struggle that the bitter herbs and salt water give us and it's a bitter cup that he took on himself
[00:23:35] so that we don't have to yeah you know and so there's there's beauty in that as well yep he received it and then the next thing is something that I can't say
[00:23:46] it's called Haroset it's a it's a mixture of apples and raisins and honey and wine it's very very sweet in contrast to pretty much everything else that's on this sater plate yeah it's very sweet
[00:24:01] and it's yummy it is yummy it's meant to symbolize from the standpoint of the the Jewish Passover celebration it is meant to symbolize the the bricks in the mortar that were made as they
[00:24:16] were slaves in Egypt it also has come to symbolize the hope because because hope is the sweet thing that made that horrible hard back-breaking work tolerable they had a hope in Messiah
[00:24:33] they had a hope that Jehovah God would come through someday somehow they had that hope as God's chosen and that Haroset that hope that makes the bitter things tolerable is found in Jesus Christ he is the
[00:24:48] fulfillment of that so that thing that they were looking forward to in Messiah has come in Jesus Christ and again it's all those simple little things because Jesus is our hope he is yeah
[00:25:07] so the next thing and this is something that it's a it's a roasted egg and in the original it's kind of more has been added on as a traditional tradition and Jewish tradition has come later
[00:25:22] and egg is symbolizing of rebirth the three and one the Trinity there's so many things that are symbolized in an egg that is on the plate but um there is also a symbolism too in Jewish
[00:25:38] tradition of the roasted egg being a symbol of grief or mourning this began being added to the satire plate um when when the temple was destroyed and they could no longer offer sacrifice
[00:25:50] in the temple so there was mourning but there was also that hope for renewal of the temple that hope for renewal of the sacrifice and in Jesus Christ again he fulfills this that he is the sacrifice right he he is the source of renewal and rebirth and
[00:26:11] looking forward upon his return he is the the renewal and rebirth into eternity for us that's all right so so you see all these different elements and then the last thing is that you
[00:26:26] take this feast when you do it and you're supposed to be reclining you're supposed to be relaxing you're supposed to be like you have no cares and no troubles on the world um it is a joyous occasion
[00:26:38] you're supposed to just be able to relax and the stories of the disciples sitting there not knowing what was going to happen a couple hours later and they're sitting they're relaxing they're with their Messiah they're with their their leader John has his head on his chest
[00:26:57] on Jesus' chest and it is they are a free people they are you know I try to say without a care in the world right at that moment but that also is symbolized and where they were just like
[00:27:11] the Jews how you are going to enjoy this feast while you're relaxing it's a freedom right so again it's that thing of where Jesus just completely fulfills that the scripture tells us that
[00:27:28] he even spoke the words that whom the sun has set free is free and de-ease so so when we when we look at the Passover meal and we look at how every single element that Jehovah God gave to
[00:27:46] the Israelites as they were leaving the slavery of Egypt to look forward to Messiah every single bit of it is fulfilled in Jesus Christ who is Messiah and because of him we are able to celebrate
[00:28:03] this meal understand of all of those symbols in their fullness that they don't just relate to salvation from Egypt but they relate to salvation from the bondage to sin and death and we are free
[00:28:19] in Jesus Christ it truly is a time of resting and relaxing and smiling and laughing and understanding that even in the bitter times he has been there being our salvation on our freedom the whole time and it's just kind of gives you chills when you when you understand
[00:28:40] that Jesus Christ just as he fulfilled the law he fulfilled all of the elements of this feast as well it's right when you're looking at it and you can just see that God has been the same yesterday today
[00:28:54] in tomorrow that the things that he was setting in place so that we would know you know God you know a lot of people is like have said I've heard people say oh God doesn't
[00:29:08] reveal himself to us he he just hides himself away and I'm like no if you see him if you're looking for him you'll see him everywhere you'll see how he has been revealing himself through these things through these festivals through these feasts through the different things throughout mankind
[00:29:30] he has been revealing himself and showing himself it has always been his desire to draw us back to himself yes he's wanted to walk with us in the garden and so well guys that's it
[00:29:44] that's our three weeks on the Passover and Jesus in the Passover and we hope that you enjoyed this we hope that you guys got something out of it we love doing it it was a lot of fun hopefully we'll
[00:29:59] do some more of these down the road there's lots of feasts there's lots of here we hope that it excites you to get into the scripture yourself and go okay what does the Old Testament say
[00:30:10] and where is Jesus in that right because that has been the the whole scripture from Genesis to Revelation is it's the same story arc yep the whole thing is the same story arc of God
[00:30:22] constantly drawing us back to himself and revealing Messiah to us and redeeming his people too so again thank you guys for watching and listening and we are so glad that you are part of our
[00:30:37] seeing God in the everyday family please comment please subscribe please like and now we would love to hear your comments so thank you so much for being part of this little series and we look
