[00:00:13] Welcome to the Sports Reverends Podcast. My name is Dan. I am joined with my big bro known as The Coach. He is a coach not only on the basketball court, but also in the stock markets. I am a reverend, downtown Toronto. I am also a chaplain for Toronto Fire and we got a great show for you today. You know, one thing special that's about our podcast, we'll give you something to take away.
[00:00:43] And we have the solution to all your problems. That's right. I know that sounds like a gimmick. That sounds like we are crazy. But what we've gone through in our lives, the challenges and the storms that we've gone through, what we know is the source who has pulled us out of the storms, pulled us out of the mud, who's helped us succeed. And that's because of our faith in Jesus Christ.
[00:01:06] Our show, what we'll give you is some high level sports analysis. That's the first half of the show. The second half of the show is our unappointed faith through the lens of sports. So tune in, buckle up, join us for this conversation. We're excited to have you here. Coach, how are you doing today?
[00:01:25] Coach, how are you doing today?
[00:01:26] I'm doing great. Coach is in a good mood. No snow. We're flying. How about you? How's your day then?
[00:01:31] I am doing well as well. My foot, if you've been following with us for a little while, I had a little fracture in my foot. I am pretty much almost ready. I was even on the stationary bike the last couple of days.
[00:01:45] And I have not really feeling too much pain anymore. So I'm excited. I'm excited to get back to normal. Why don't you give us a little rundown?
[00:01:54] Yeah, let's get a rundown for today. As always, our top, I would do some pitter news. We'll talk about our picks from last week, including the bonus pick for the NFL.
[00:02:03] And what we've got coming up this week, the top five games. And then we're going to talk about what is your legacy?
[00:02:09] I know a lot of athletes are always concerned about their legacy and what they're going to leave behind.
[00:02:15] And what should you be focused on as a fellow faith believer when it comes to your legacy?
[00:02:20] So why don't you start us off with our quick hitter news?
[00:02:22] All right, here we go. Jeremy Roenick inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame after 16 years.
[00:02:31] Man, I had to wait a long time.
[00:02:32] But number two, Shane Waldron has been fired as the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator.
[00:02:39] Bears are currently sitting at four and five.
[00:02:42] Too late. They should have done it earlier, in my opinion.
[00:02:45] Now, the Winnipeg Jets, our hometown team, start the season 14 and one for the best start in NHL history.
[00:02:54] Come on.
[00:02:56] That's just wild. Just wild.
[00:02:57] Inter-Miami of the MLS have been eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.
[00:03:03] No messy magic this year.
[00:03:05] And Rachel Gunn, a.k.a. Ray Gunn, from the Australian Olympic break dancing team, has retired.
[00:03:14] Retired a legend.
[00:03:16] Retired a legend.
[00:03:18] All right.
[00:03:19] For sure.
[00:03:20] Time to handle some business here.
[00:03:22] Urban Hope is our mentorship program that I get to run in downtown Toronto.
[00:03:26] Get to run this program in a marginalized neighborhood.
[00:03:31] And this program is a mentorship program for kids and youth.
[00:03:35] We provide a safe space for them, for them to hang out, to do homework, to run our programs there for them as well.
[00:03:42] We're also starting a basketball academy for them as well.
[00:03:46] So that all the students that don't get the opportunities to show up to skills, to grow in their skills, to develop their skills on and off the court.
[00:03:55] Because that's what coach teaches.
[00:03:56] That's how coach coaches.
[00:03:57] We are giving them the opportunity for this.
[00:04:00] So if you are able to support in any kind of way, check out the link in our description of YouTube here.
[00:04:08] Churchinthecity.ca.ca.
[00:04:09] Give.
[00:04:10] It'll all go towards Urban Hope.
[00:04:12] Every dollar, every cent will go towards building up the program.
[00:04:16] Not to salaries.
[00:04:17] Not to building.
[00:04:18] Not to anything else.
[00:04:18] Goes towards the program for subsidizing the cost for the kids.
[00:04:23] So if you are able to support, please do so.
[00:04:26] We thank you for all those who have supported already.
[00:04:28] If you are in Canada and you are supporting, you will receive a tax receipt as well at the end of our year in February if it's more than $20.
[00:04:37] So thank you for your support.
[00:04:40] Back to you, coach.
[00:04:41] Awesome.
[00:04:42] Very worthy cause.
[00:04:43] Very worthy cause.
[00:04:43] All right.
[00:04:44] So last week we had the five picks plus a bonus.
[00:04:47] And thankfully because of the bonus, we went three and three.
[00:04:51] Not the best week for us.
[00:04:52] We got a Giants loss.
[00:04:53] Cincinnati narrowly lost.
[00:04:55] The 49ers take a dub.
[00:04:57] Casey takes a dub.
[00:04:58] Houston loses.
[00:04:59] And Philadelphia crushed the Cowboys with a relish.
[00:05:04] So out of those six games, what did you think was the most interesting?
[00:05:09] What had your eye last week?
[00:05:11] Most definitely got to look at that Kansas City-Denver Bronco game.
[00:05:16] I think Denver was up 14-3.
[00:05:20] Bo Nix was looking so good.
[00:05:22] You know, the Kansas City Chiefs, they just got this destiny upon them.
[00:05:27] They turned it on in the second half.
[00:05:31] Bo Nix, I don't think the Nuggets, the Broncos scored a point in the second half.
[00:05:38] Incredible.
[00:05:39] Incredible.
[00:05:39] And it came down to this field goal block for the win at the buzzer.
[00:05:47] Now, a lot of people are going to say it's just luck.
[00:05:50] A lot of people are going to say the refs are just loving the Kansas City Chiefs.
[00:05:55] It's the Taylor Swift effect.
[00:05:56] I really think this comes down to amazing coaching, not letting them score in the second half, even scheming up the way they make that block kick.
[00:06:05] That is a coaching implant for the Chiefs.
[00:06:10] So full credit to them.
[00:06:12] Undefeated.
[00:06:12] Looks like they are destined for another great season.
[00:06:16] This is after two years of Super Bowl now.
[00:06:19] They're 9-0.
[00:06:20] Like, this is unprecedented.
[00:06:22] When that Tom Brady team with Randy Moss went undefeated, they had nothing like that in their past.
[00:06:27] So this is really an unprecedented team.
[00:06:30] It's pretty amazing.
[00:06:33] Bonus question follow-up.
[00:06:34] Could they go undefeated this year?
[00:06:36] I think they have a real shot.
[00:06:38] I really do.
[00:06:39] This week is their tough week coming up, and I think we'll have a chance to talk about that soon against Buffalo.
[00:06:45] But the interesting thing about the Chiefs is, like, they play it close with the bad teams.
[00:06:50] But with the good teams, they seem to, like, just dominate.
[00:06:53] They dominated the 49ers and the Ravens, and then they go to the Broncos game here and a couple of other weaker teams.
[00:07:01] It's always close.
[00:07:02] It's always close.
[00:07:03] So it's interesting.
[00:07:04] It's interesting.
[00:07:06] Flipping a switch.
[00:07:07] It's Patrick Mahomes, the rest of the team.
[00:07:09] And it's interesting.
[00:07:10] Let's talk about legacy a little bit.
[00:07:11] And Andy Reid.
[00:07:12] I mean, he's definitely changed his legacy.
[00:07:15] For sure.
[00:07:17] All right.
[00:07:17] Looking up for this week, we are going to change it up a little bit.
[00:07:20] We're going to challenge ourselves a little more.
[00:07:22] We're going to look at some of the primetime games.
[00:07:24] We've got five picked out.
[00:07:26] And they can get a little harder picks for us this week.
[00:07:28] And let's start with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Commanders.
[00:07:34] What are your thoughts?
[00:07:35] Who are you picking?
[00:07:37] Who's got your eye?
[00:07:39] Yeah, I think I'm going to lean towards the Commanders here.
[00:07:44] I know Philadelphia is going to be the favorites.
[00:07:47] I'm pretty sure they're the heavy favorites, according to the sports book.
[00:07:51] And I think that the Commanders with Jaden Daniels and now the addition of Lattimore,
[00:07:59] I think they really match up well with Philadelphia.
[00:08:03] And I think Philadelphia struggles to put points on the board.
[00:08:06] So I think Jaden Daniels coming off a tough loss against the Steelers there.
[00:08:11] I think Commanders, take it.
[00:08:13] What do you think?
[00:08:14] All right.
[00:08:15] I think I agree with your assessment.
[00:08:16] I'm a little less skeptical because it is at Philadelphia.
[00:08:21] But I think Lattimore is going to bring a nice boost to the defense for sure.
[00:08:25] And Daniels is going to have a bit of a rebound after a tough second half last week.
[00:08:31] Even though Philly beat the Cowboys, I mean, Dak wasn't playing.
[00:08:35] So that's not really indicative of how good they are.
[00:08:38] I think Washington, who has been an underdog the whole year, it feels like, comes out on top again.
[00:08:45] So we're both going with Washington.
[00:08:48] Lock it in.
[00:08:49] All right.
[00:08:50] All right.
[00:08:50] Lock that one in.
[00:08:52] Tougher pick here.
[00:08:53] Baltimore at Pittsburgh.
[00:08:54] Who thought Pittsburgh would be the cream of the crop of the AFC North?
[00:09:00] Mike Tomlin did.
[00:09:01] Mike Tomlin.
[00:09:02] Gutsy move putting in Russell Wilson when everyone said, how could you do that?
[00:09:07] And he looks like an absolute genius.
[00:09:09] I'm rolling with Mike Tomlin and the Steelers taking down Baltimore.
[00:09:16] Yeah.
[00:09:17] Wow.
[00:09:17] That's a tough one.
[00:09:20] I like Baltimore and, you know, Lamar is going for his third MVP.
[00:09:25] But this game's at Pittsburgh.
[00:09:28] If they lock this game up, I believe they're going to lock up the whole division.
[00:09:33] And Russell Wilson, I mean, let's be honest.
[00:09:37] We all kind of wrote him off after that year in Denver and all that nonsense.
[00:09:41] But he's a mobile quarterback.
[00:09:43] He's very accurate.
[00:09:45] 64%.
[00:09:46] And the defense is strong.
[00:09:48] It's basically the Seattle of the East.
[00:09:50] And I'm going to say this.
[00:09:52] I definitely stole that from Colin Coward this morning, as he pointed that out.
[00:09:55] So I'm not coining the phrase for myself.
[00:09:57] I'm borrowing from Colin Coward.
[00:09:58] They are looking really strong.
[00:10:00] They're a tough team to beat.
[00:10:01] They got a good run game.
[00:10:02] I'm picking Pittsburgh as well.
[00:10:04] I think we're double dipping there.
[00:10:06] I think Baltimore's defense is just so weak.
[00:10:09] So I think that's what makes the difference for me.
[00:10:11] Yeah.
[00:10:12] A bit of a surprise because Baltimore is known for their lockdown defense as well.
[00:10:17] Probably, I think, potentially the most fun game of the night, or Sunday at least,
[00:10:22] Kansas City and the Buffalo Bills.
[00:10:24] We got, is this the post-Taylor effect coming through?
[00:10:27] Maybe?
[00:10:28] Yeah.
[00:10:29] You go first.
[00:10:29] You go first.
[00:10:30] Okay.
[00:10:30] I think, you know, we talked about Patrick Mahomes.
[00:10:34] It's not a late game.
[00:10:37] It's an early game in New York.
[00:10:38] Shouldn't be too chilly.
[00:10:40] I think they just go away with it.
[00:10:42] Like you said, I mentioned Pacquiao coming back or Pacheo.
[00:10:46] Sorry.
[00:10:46] He's coming back off the, off the injury.
[00:10:49] So another weapon.
[00:10:51] And it seems like the Kansas City Chiefs are hitting their stride at the right time.
[00:10:56] Halfway through the season here coming up.
[00:10:57] And it looks like the AFC is taken over by the KC Chiefs.
[00:11:02] Yeah.
[00:11:03] I'm with you with the Chiefs as well.
[00:11:05] Bills, they dominate the bad teams, but they've been struggling against the good teams.
[00:11:09] So I think they're going to run into another wall here.
[00:11:12] Taylor Swift is set up to be there again.
[00:11:14] She's going to be finished in Toronto for the first half of her tour.
[00:11:18] Make it down by Sunday for the game.
[00:11:21] Taylor Swift effect.
[00:11:23] Back to Toronto again after that.
[00:11:25] You know what?
[00:11:25] Yep.
[00:11:25] Chiefs it is, man.
[00:11:26] Let's go.
[00:11:27] Chiefs it is.
[00:11:28] All right.
[00:11:29] Cincinnati and the Chargers.
[00:11:30] I think the Chargers have been sneaky good in terms of media coverage.
[00:11:37] Like we mentioned before, they're six and three.
[00:11:40] They're playing the Sunday nighter.
[00:11:42] Cincinnati is desperate, but I think we're going to see another LA win for sure.
[00:11:49] I was going to choose the Bengals because they're more desperate.
[00:11:55] And I believe T.
[00:11:56] T. Higgins is coming back.
[00:11:57] The Chargers defense does match up really well with the...
[00:12:01] Really well, yep.
[00:12:02] Ah, it's tough.
[00:12:03] You're saying the Chargers.
[00:12:05] Okay.
[00:12:05] I'll lean the Chargers.
[00:12:07] In my heart, I think it's the Bengals, but I'll lean the Chargers because I think you have some good points.
[00:12:11] And last but not least, Houston at Dallas.
[00:12:16] I'll let you run away with this one.
[00:12:18] Yeah, this is not too much of a question.
[00:12:21] We don't even know which quarterback starting.
[00:12:23] Is it going to be Cooper Rush?
[00:12:24] Is it going to be Trey Lance?
[00:12:26] Cooper Rush in his 45 yards and two fumbles is not going to cut it against the Texans who are desperate.
[00:12:33] I know the Cowboys will have some players coming back and we'll see how much pride they really take.
[00:12:38] But last game, what really disgusted me was that they just...
[00:12:42] It looked like they gave up.
[00:12:44] And I don't care how bad your roster is beaten.
[00:12:47] If you give up, I just hate that.
[00:12:49] I hate that as an organization.
[00:12:51] And yeah, not much else to say.
[00:12:55] Not much backing for Mike McCarthy from his team there.
[00:13:01] Yeah, this is not the first time that we let us look like Dallas has given up.
[00:13:07] And that's not a good look.
[00:13:10] Even if Dak goes down, you still want your team to fight.
[00:13:14] Right?
[00:13:15] And Houston is coming in hot.
[00:13:18] They are also desperate.
[00:13:20] Right?
[00:13:20] They want to make some moves and really lock up the division.
[00:13:23] And start getting on that roll that they were on last year.
[00:13:26] Right?
[00:13:26] I think Houston comes in and just makes a mess of Denver.
[00:13:30] Or Denver.
[00:13:31] Makes a mess of Dallas and goes through that.
[00:13:33] So we got our top five picks for this week.
[00:13:37] We have Washington.
[00:13:38] We have Pittsburgh.
[00:13:40] Chiefs, the Chargers, and the Houston Texans.
[00:13:45] Locking.
[00:13:46] Let's go.
[00:13:47] Locking it in.
[00:13:48] All right.
[00:13:49] So that's our football talk for today.
[00:13:51] Hopefully, we're going to get a bagel on the loss side this week.
[00:13:54] Go 5-0.
[00:13:56] And looking forward to that.
[00:13:58] Tonight, tonight, tonight, in the association, we have the NBA Cup starting up.
[00:14:05] Ooh.
[00:14:06] I think I'm a little torn on this.
[00:14:09] And it feels gimmicky.
[00:14:13] But we had a really good experience last year.
[00:14:18] But Indiana just couldn't come through.
[00:14:21] It kind of felt like the playoffs.
[00:14:22] And you felt that a young team going through this little bit of a run would help them cement their moves into the playoffs.
[00:14:31] Didn't quite pan out.
[00:14:33] Now, Siakam did come in, for sure.
[00:14:34] And that's a bit of a change.
[00:14:37] But, yeah.
[00:14:38] What are your thoughts here?
[00:14:39] Let's just start with, do you like the NBA Cup idea?
[00:14:42] I do like the NBA Cup.
[00:14:43] I'm less hyped about it this year than I am last year.
[00:14:46] Last year was brand new.
[00:14:47] I think I'm less hyped this year because we see a lot more of the players not caring as much as well.
[00:14:55] You know, I think they're okay with sitting out games.
[00:14:58] And, unfortunately, I think that's playing a role a little bit.
[00:15:02] Like, I know Joel Embiid is finally making his debut.
[00:15:06] And I hope if you see the playoff kind of effort in these games, that'll change my attitude towards it.
[00:15:13] But I'm locked in.
[00:15:14] I'll be watching it.
[00:15:15] I'll be following it.
[00:15:15] I still think it's something that teams that, once they make the final playoff for it, will lock in even more.
[00:15:23] Because they're playing for their staffs as well.
[00:15:25] Because they all get a big payday from it.
[00:15:27] So, once they make the playoff, then I think it'll get more intense.
[00:15:30] But I'm locked in for it.
[00:15:31] I think it'll be good.
[00:15:33] I like the courts.
[00:15:34] I like the courts.
[00:15:35] The courts are cool.
[00:15:36] I think the courts are a cool idea.
[00:15:37] Most of them I really liked.
[00:15:38] I think one thing that's probably going to negatively impact the cup is all the injuries that we've had.
[00:15:44] Durant's out again.
[00:15:46] We got Kawhi out.
[00:15:47] A bunch of guys who are hurt.
[00:15:50] And it's interesting.
[00:15:51] Embiid's coming back.
[00:15:52] What kind of shape is he going to be in?
[00:15:54] He's definitely not playing any back-to-backs.
[00:15:57] I think a bit of the luster has come off.
[00:16:01] Because it's not new.
[00:16:03] And also, I think the Lakers hanging a banner was kind of a good idea.
[00:16:06] Kind of ridiculous.
[00:16:07] Yeah.
[00:16:08] And a little silly.
[00:16:10] But I think it's a chance for teams to make some noise.
[00:16:13] I mean, you have the Raps and Bucks who are at the bottom of the Eastern Conference.
[00:16:17] And hopefully they can start to turn things around.
[00:16:20] Well, most of the Bucks.
[00:16:22] But you have some marquee games.
[00:16:23] Also, the Mavs and Warriors are playing tonight.
[00:16:26] Which is a great game.
[00:16:27] The return of Klay Thompson to Golden State.
[00:16:30] Yes.
[00:16:30] Yes.
[00:16:31] And currently the Warriors sit on top of the division or the conference.
[00:16:35] So, I think what I really like is that there's a lot of interesting matchups early on in the year.
[00:16:43] Which brings that positivity and brings that attention back to the game.
[00:16:48] Especially with the NFL trending so hard.
[00:16:51] So, looking forward to the NBA Cup.
[00:16:53] We'll see how it goes through towards the playoffs.
[00:16:55] I think you're right.
[00:16:56] One of the motivating factors should be what the staff's going to get.
[00:17:01] Because they get a really nice payout.
[00:17:03] For sure.
[00:17:04] Six figures.
[00:17:05] Yeah.
[00:17:06] That's pretty big.
[00:17:07] You're only making $100,000, $200,000.
[00:17:10] All of a sudden your salary doubles.
[00:17:12] That's pretty crazy.
[00:17:13] Even some of those trainers that are probably making less.
[00:17:16] It's a big number.
[00:17:18] For sure.
[00:17:19] Big number for sure.
[00:17:19] Did you see the Klay and Dre beef already?
[00:17:23] I saw it and it feels a bit manufactured.
[00:17:29] Oh, really?
[00:17:30] You know what I mean?
[00:17:31] Okay.
[00:17:31] It feels a bit manufactured.
[00:17:33] I think Draymond as a personality is contentious already.
[00:17:40] I think you need somebody like Steph to really just absorb that.
[00:17:44] Let him be kind of how he is.
[00:17:46] Because no other team would put up with Draymond Green.
[00:17:50] 1000%.
[00:17:50] Nor would they pay him.
[00:17:51] So I still think it's amazing what Klay has done.
[00:17:56] And I really, really think the Mavs have a good shot at knocking out the Warriors for sure.
[00:18:03] What are your thoughts?
[00:18:04] What do you think about that?
[00:18:05] I think Draymond is smart in the sense by him saying,
[00:18:10] I'm going to run through Klay this first game.
[00:18:13] I think that's so brilliant.
[00:18:15] Because this is going to bring eyes to watch us.
[00:18:17] Everyone's going to be geared up for that.
[00:18:19] Yeah, I think the Mavericks are the better team.
[00:18:22] Depends on Luke's health.
[00:18:24] I know he's dealing with some, I think it's a hamstring.
[00:18:27] So we'll see.
[00:18:28] If Luke is healthy, then I think they're good.
[00:18:30] But the Warriors have really proven they can play.
[00:18:32] They can take on some of the top teams here.
[00:18:35] Everyone kind of thought they'd be a bottom team in the West.
[00:18:38] But I think they're trending towards top six.
[00:18:41] For now.
[00:18:42] For now.
[00:18:43] Maybe Steve Kerr can actually coach.
[00:18:45] Who knows?
[00:18:45] Maybe.
[00:18:46] Maybe.
[00:18:47] The only reason why I say it's manufactured.
[00:18:49] Yeah, I hope a story is a different story.
[00:18:50] The only reason why I say it's manufactured.
[00:18:52] Because he's trying to pull a Kobe.
[00:18:54] You know he watched the documentations of that whole story with Pau Gasol.
[00:19:00] And it's like, okay, Draymond, whatever.
[00:19:03] And if he runs through Klay, he's getting a T.
[00:19:05] Like 1,000%.
[00:19:07] And that adds up to his in-season T total.
[00:19:09] So like, come on.
[00:19:11] Anyways.
[00:19:12] Good basketball is back.
[00:19:13] Good basketball.
[00:19:14] A little bit further down the line.
[00:19:16] But hopefully with the injuries, people get back on track.
[00:19:19] And a lot of surprise stories.
[00:19:20] So not quite going the way you want it to.
[00:19:23] Which is interesting.
[00:19:24] Which is great.
[00:19:25] Which is great.
[00:19:25] When has November basketball been fun to watch?
[00:19:29] It hasn't been historically.
[00:19:33] It depends what you call fun.
[00:19:34] I love watching the Spurs when Tim Duncan and Manu and Timmy were just seeing the ball around.
[00:19:39] That's fun for me.
[00:19:40] I know.
[00:19:40] But that's one team.
[00:19:41] Now you're kind of locked into the league again.
[00:19:43] I'm ready to get the league pass going.
[00:19:45] Get the multi-screen going.
[00:19:46] I'm excited.
[00:19:47] Yeah.
[00:19:48] That's fair.
[00:19:49] That's fair.
[00:19:49] I take that back.
[00:19:50] I will say this, though.
[00:19:52] Up is down.
[00:19:53] And down is up in the Eastern Conference, which is great.
[00:19:56] Yeah.
[00:19:57] So Cleveland sitting on top is unbelievable.
[00:19:59] But Milwaukee at the bottom is a little interesting as well.
[00:20:02] All right.
[00:20:03] Yeah.
[00:20:03] That wraps up our NBA talk for today.
[00:20:05] Let's get to handle a little bit more business.
[00:20:08] Talk about what do you want to do when you're done working?
[00:20:12] Do you even have a plan?
[00:20:14] Do you even think you can afford to be done working?
[00:20:16] If you have all these questions and you're still wondering, you know, how does inflation
[00:20:20] affect me?
[00:20:21] I just know stuff's more expensive.
[00:20:23] You need a little bit of financial literacy.
[00:20:25] And that's what we do here at Train to Invest.

[00:21:38] All right.
[00:21:40] Heading towards our Real Talk section for today.
[00:21:43] Last week we talked about destiny.
[00:21:46] And today we're talking about legacy.
[00:21:49] And in the sports world, your legacy can be very, I think, I think it's changeable, right?
[00:21:55] It all matters on what happens in between.
[00:21:58] It can even matter what happens post.
[00:22:00] For example, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are in the Grey Cup for the fifth consecutive year,
[00:22:05] which is amazing.
[00:22:07] However, they've gone two and two in the last four years.
[00:22:10] I think how this legacy of the Bomber team will be discussed really matters if they win
[00:22:18] or lose this next game.
[00:22:20] Talking about a three and two, three wins in five years versus three losses in five years
[00:22:25] really could define their legacy.
[00:22:28] Can you think of any other examples about legacy and how it impacts in the world of sports?
[00:22:35] Maybe you can think of an example of what has changed over time, if you can.
[00:22:39] Yeah, I think.
[00:22:42] Yeah, so I think we're living in one right now with the Kansas City Chiefs.
[00:22:46] They're looking for their first three-peat, right?
[00:22:48] And I think that's very just mind-blowing how good they are, especially how difficult what the NFL is.
[00:22:56] You know, what's changed over time is I think, you know, people expect it to be like Michael Jordan.
[00:23:04] You go undefeated.
[00:23:05] You can't ever lose.
[00:23:07] Like, Michael Jordan's one of one.
[00:23:09] Right?
[00:23:10] He is probably untouchable.
[00:23:12] There's times you're going to lose.
[00:23:14] Magic Johnson lost.
[00:23:16] You know, Kobe obviously lost.
[00:23:18] All the guys.
[00:23:19] Everyone's lost before.
[00:23:20] Michael Jordan's one of one.
[00:23:21] I think legacy is bigger than...
[00:23:25] I think it's also become bigger than just winning and how many championships you win.
[00:23:29] It's kind of become what impact you bring to your sport and to your fans and to your city.
[00:23:37] You look at...
[00:23:38] You look at Steph Curry.
[00:23:40] He totally changed the game of basketball.
[00:23:44] That's a legacy as a part of his winning.
[00:23:47] And I think that speaks volumes as well.
[00:23:50] Jordan's the one who brought it globally.
[00:23:51] That speaks to his legacy.
[00:23:54] Yeah.
[00:23:54] I think that's a really good point.
[00:23:57] Basketball is one of the few sports where you've had, you know, several teams dominate only.
[00:24:03] Right?
[00:24:04] I think there's a period in time where it was just the Lakers, Spurs, and one or two other teams that won for the last 20 years.
[00:24:12] Right?
[00:24:12] Because of those...
[00:24:13] And the Bulls toss it in there.
[00:24:15] Right?
[00:24:15] So, it was that period of time where it was just the same few teams were winning.
[00:24:18] And the legacy has changed, especially, you know, when you're talking about social media.
[00:24:22] Yeah.
[00:24:23] Because you're bringing the fact that, hey, you're talking more about...
[00:24:26] More than just the game.
[00:24:28] You're talking about what do they do for charities?
[00:24:30] What do they say politically?
[00:24:32] What do they...
[00:24:33] What are the actions that they speak?
[00:24:34] Right?
[00:24:34] Because, like, you know, let's take Steph Curry, for example.
[00:24:37] Right?
[00:24:38] He wasn't happy there was a bunch of homeless people by his home in his gated community.
[00:24:42] He got them all kicked out.
[00:24:44] But in the NBA, he seems a really nice guy.
[00:24:47] And so, we probably wouldn't know that story if this was 10, 15 years ago.
[00:24:51] Because there's no Snapchat.
[00:24:53] There's no Instagram.
[00:24:54] There's no social media rolling around.
[00:24:56] So, the ability of this 24-7 news cycle can really impact what people view as your legacy.
[00:25:04] And it can also really impact how easy it is to mess it up.
[00:25:09] Right?
[00:25:11] I think, for example...
[00:25:13] Give me another example.
[00:25:15] Either LeBron James.
[00:25:17] Whenever he poses with a book, he's always either on the first page or the book's upside down.
[00:25:23] And you know it's manufactured.
[00:25:25] Right?
[00:25:26] And he's manufacturing it because we're in the social media frenzy of a world.
[00:25:31] Right?
[00:25:32] And so, when athletes who are really locked in about their perception and their legacy, they have to factor in, okay, how do I represent myself both on and off the court?
[00:25:41] We see a lot of athletes moving into the fashion industry.
[00:25:45] Especially for soccer and basketball players.
[00:25:50] Right?
[00:25:51] Right?
[00:25:51] So, it's really interesting how legacy has changed.
[00:25:54] Because, for example, you talk about Jordan.
[00:25:56] He's a one and done.
[00:25:57] Think about Wayne Gretzky.
[00:25:58] You know, his legacy is not only winning the Cups in Edmonton, but bringing hockey to the West Coast.
[00:26:06] Right?
[00:26:07] You wouldn't have the LA Kings without Wayne Gretzky.
[00:26:10] You wouldn't even have expansion teams in Seattle and Vegas without Gretzky.
[00:26:15] And that's all tied to his legacy of taking the most marketable hockey player at the time and putting him in the smallest market.
[00:26:23] And seeing the game grow that way.
[00:26:25] It'd be like taking Michael Jordan and putting him in, I don't know, Kansas City.
[00:26:33] Some no-name backwards town.
[00:26:36] Right?
[00:26:36] So, it's really interesting to see how legacies in and of itself has changed over time.
[00:26:44] Look at Kobe.
[00:26:46] Kobe had the legacy of just being solely focused on the basketball.
[00:26:51] A real gunner.
[00:26:52] You know, there was the Colorado thing that happened as well.
[00:26:55] The guy retires and all of a sudden, he's writing music.
[00:27:00] He's writing screenplays.
[00:27:02] You see the different side of him.
[00:27:03] He's coaching his daughter's basketball team and he isn't ripping their heads off.
[00:27:08] Yeah.
[00:27:08] Like, all that kind of stuff has come out.
[00:27:11] And you see that his legacy for himself wasn't tied with basketball only.
[00:27:17] It was tied with his other passions.
[00:27:19] It was really tied to his family after a while.
[00:27:21] Right?
[00:27:21] So, it's really interesting how legacy has changed, especially in the sports world over time.
[00:27:29] How about when it comes to your legacy as a believer?
[00:27:32] Right?
[00:27:33] Right.
[00:27:33] We talked about destiny last week and how God's got a plan for you.
[00:27:40] How can you actively impact your legacy here on Earth?
[00:27:43] Yeah, that's a difficult question, I think.
[00:27:45] I think if you are sole purpose to glorify God, you know, it's not about what you accomplish in that sense here on Earth.
[00:27:57] And the terms we look at as success.
[00:27:59] If the sole purpose, if our goal is to glorify God, to honor God, to do what God has called us to do,
[00:28:07] you know, a lot of times you won't see the fruit of your rewards here on Earth.
[00:28:13] Right?
[00:28:14] The scripture says your rewards will be given to you in Heaven.
[00:28:18] And you'll be having extra jewels on your crown in Heaven.
[00:28:23] And so, when you look at it in that sense of leaving your legacy, you know,
[00:28:28] I just want my legacy that is left as known as good and faithful servant.
[00:28:35] If I had a tombstone made for me, that's what I would want my tombstone to say.
[00:28:41] And so, I think it's a little bit different in that sense where, you know, in sports, it's like,
[00:28:46] okay, I want everyone to know that I was the greatest to do it.
[00:28:50] But, you know, when it comes to faith, it's a little different.
[00:28:52] Yeah, absolutely.
[00:28:53] I think, you know, when you're talking about it, one thing that just came to my head was,
[00:28:57] on Earth, when you're thinking about Earthly things, it's about you writing your legacy
[00:29:02] so other people perceive it the way you want it to be perceived.
[00:29:07] Whereas, as a Christian, you're not worried about what others are writing about your legacy.
[00:29:12] It's about when you go to Heaven and you meet God, it's like, what is God going to say about my legacy?
[00:29:19] Good and faithful servant or, hey, I barely knew you?
[00:29:23] Right?
[00:29:23] And so, you have to, I think, taking that idea that we're not here on this Earth for a long period of time
[00:29:32] and that we're supposed to sow into the kingdom, like, you don't have to be a Billy Graham.
[00:29:38] You don't have to donate millions and millions of dollars to different charities.
[00:29:43] Right?
[00:29:44] You say aptly on Sundays, you're not going to logic anybody into the kingdom of Heaven.
[00:29:50] Your legacy as a believer is being obedient and loving God and loving others, like we talk about it on Sunday mornings.
[00:30:00] And it's not really complicated, it feels, in terms of talking about legacy.
[00:30:05] Whereas, you know, you're not expected to hit a 10 out of 10 on your sermons every Sunday.
[00:30:11] Right?
[00:30:11] Because in reality, you're just preaching what God tells you to preach.
[00:30:15] Right?
[00:30:15] Versus, you know, Shohei hitting 400 at the plate would be his legacy.
[00:30:21] Right?
[00:30:21] You just have to show up and let God do all the work.
[00:30:24] It's kind of, I think, the theme we've been talking about the last couple of weeks.
[00:30:26] Yeah.
[00:30:26] Like, I think there's also a difference with building your legacy and what you leave behind.
[00:30:32] You know, leaving behind, you know, we are supposed to be stewards.
[00:30:36] We're supposed to be building into others.
[00:30:38] You know, I look at it like, yeah, I'll bring up the WNBA.
[00:30:43] Okay.
[00:30:43] I saw this quote with Caitlin Clark.
[00:30:45] I actually even have it on my phone here.
[00:30:46] Okay.
[00:30:47] This is the proper mentality to have.
[00:30:53] If you want to build your league, you want to grow it, this is the mentality that I think you should have.
[00:30:59] This is what Caitlin Clark said, I think it was yesterday, at a women's leadership summit.
[00:31:03] She said this, that's the reason that you play.
[00:31:06] It's not because of the wins and the points you score.
[00:31:09] It's the amount of joy that you can bring people and the young girls that will one day grow up to be, hopefully, be whatever they want to be.
[00:31:18] And I think, like, with that, with her mentality of wanting to actually build into the future, playing the basketball for the game and to build the game and to build the league instead of building her brand only, right?
[00:31:31] That is the right attitude.
[00:31:33] The same kind of principle is with your Christian journey, Christian walk.
[00:31:36] You know, you should be building into those that are around you.
[00:31:40] You know, if you succeed, you want to bring your brothers, your sisters with you along the way.
[00:31:46] And that's what your heartbeat should be.
[00:31:49] That's what your mindset should be.
[00:31:51] It should be so much bigger than building your brand.
[00:31:54] It's taking the focus off of self and onto the bigger picture, which is bringing people to Christ, pointing people to the source, our source of hope.
[00:32:04] The source that I talked about in the beginning of the show, our source of hope, our source of peace, our source of joy.
[00:32:11] And that's what will really, I think, define your legacy.
[00:32:18] Because your honor will come from God, but your lasting legacy, that will be seen in how you live it out that way.
[00:32:27] Yeah, I think you touched on a really good point with stewardship.
[00:32:30] And a lot of times people think about stewardship only in terms of money, right?
[00:32:36] Stewardship comes with your time.
[00:32:37] It comes with where you place your energy and your effort.
[00:32:42] Urban hope, I think of that.
[00:32:45] We would love to have 1,000 donors every year, every month, giving 1,000 bucks, right?
[00:32:52] But we'd also love to have 1,000 people volunteering their time.
[00:32:55] Just so back into these kids' lives to give them positive role models to help grow the program overall.
[00:33:04] So stewardship, I think you're right, is about what are you going to do, not just with your money, but with your time, with your efforts, and with you as a person.
[00:33:12] And that's kind of what we're talking about is you need to open yourself up to opportunities, right?
[00:33:20] That destiny piece comes because God's got a plan for you.
[00:33:24] The legacy piece comes when you follow that plan, I feel.
[00:33:27] And you listen to God and you be obedient and, you know, take the quote-unquote random opportunities that come your way and run with them.
[00:33:37] Run with them.
[00:33:38] If someone wants to be...
[00:33:40] Go ahead.
[00:33:40] Go ahead.
[00:33:41] Go ahead.
[00:33:42] I was going to ask, you know, if somebody wants to be a steward of more than just their money, any ideas, any tips for them to try and make that happen?
[00:33:52] Yeah.
[00:33:52] That's what we try to work on every single day.
[00:33:55] It's how we live.
[00:33:57] You know, you want to be a steward in your, like you mentioned, time.
[00:34:01] But you also want to be one in your character as well.
[00:34:03] It's something you have to build on and work on.
[00:34:05] You know, I was just going to say there's a perfect picture of what you were describing as someone who lived that out recently.
[00:34:15] The kicker for the Detroit Lions.
[00:34:17] And his name's Jake Bates.
[00:34:18] I just had to look up his name again.
[00:34:20] He was a couple weeks ago laying bricks.
[00:34:23] That's what his job was.
[00:34:25] Now, not the street terms bricks.
[00:34:28] Okay.
[00:34:28] He was literally laying bricks.
[00:34:30] I know a lot of the memes out there saying, oh, yeah, he was selling drugs.
[00:34:35] No, that's not what he was doing.
[00:34:36] He was literally construction, laying bricks.
[00:34:39] And then called up Detroit Lions, kicks game-winning field goals.
[00:34:44] His post-game interviewer saying, you know, all this opened doors for me.
[00:34:49] It's been about Jesus opening these doors for me.
[00:34:52] I've been patient.
[00:34:53] I've been doing my job.
[00:34:54] But God opened this door for me.
[00:34:56] This platform now is for me to share about the love of Christ in my life and how he's brought me through all these challenges, these storms, and brought me to this amazing opportunity where now I get to say, hey, this is my reward.
[00:35:10] Jesus brought me here.
[00:35:11] And now I'm going to give him all the glory in my success.
[00:35:15] I think that was just an incredible picture of what a great legacy to leave.
[00:35:21] Absolutely.
[00:35:22] Absolutely.
[00:35:22] And you're seeing that people are being patient.
[00:35:26] People are, you know, putting in the work and doors are opening for them and giving them a chance to share their faith.
[00:35:33] I mean, I feel like this year we've seen a real uptick in public declarations of living for God.
[00:35:40] You know, the major themes like C.J. Stroud, the Paris Olympic, Butker from the KC Chiefs.
[00:35:46] Right now, now this guy.
[00:35:48] We're seeing more and more people saying, you know, I stand on the side of God because he's opened these doors for me.
[00:35:56] And it's really encouraging.
[00:35:57] Because, I mean, as a, let's call it, let's call it us regular people.
[00:36:01] We go through hard times just like everybody else.
[00:36:04] Right?
[00:36:05] And sometimes it's hard because you feel alone.
[00:36:07] But having, you know, your social media feed instead of being all this negative and depressing stuff and trash, you get to see positivity.
[00:36:17] You get to see real life examples of what being faithful does.
[00:36:23] Right?
[00:36:24] And in the realm of sports, I think that's even, it's great for a lot of people because we can easily relate to that.
[00:36:31] Right?
[00:36:31] We can easily relate to having to put in work, biding your time and then getting an opportunity.
[00:36:37] You know, there's a lot of young people out there who want stuff to come right away.
[00:36:42] But you put in the work, you develop your skills.
[00:36:46] All of a sudden, you might go from a sixth man to a starter.
[00:36:50] Yeah, of course you want to say, hey, I did this.
[00:36:52] But also, hey, God opened a door.
[00:36:55] And that comes with your studies.
[00:36:56] It comes with your workplace.
[00:36:58] It's not just about being meek.
[00:37:00] It's about being bold and taking opportunities.
[00:37:01] But also saying, hey, there's people out there in the real world who are trusting in God.
[00:37:07] And their situation might be different because they're playing a kid's game for fun and getting paid lots of money to do it.
[00:37:13] But they still struggle.
[00:37:15] They still have problems.
[00:37:16] They still need opportunities.
[00:37:17] And they're being faithful.
[00:37:19] So I can be faithful.
[00:37:20] And I can trust that God's going to do the same thing.
[00:37:21] So, yeah, I think that's a great topic to tie off with Destiny.
[00:37:26] We're coming up here to 40 minutes.
[00:37:28] So I think we're going to wrap it up for today.
[00:37:30] Next week, next week, I think we're going to try and scoop a special guest.
[00:37:35] Next, someone near and dear to the program.
[00:37:37] We won't tell you who it is.
[00:37:39] I think we'll do maybe we'll do a promo.
[00:37:42] I don't know.
[00:37:42] We'll see.
[00:37:43] Keep it a secret.
[00:37:44] But next week, we will roll with this and look forward to you guys joining us.
[00:37:49] Any last words, Pastor Dan?
[00:37:51] Any last words?
[00:37:53] Yeah, something I'm going to try to end every show with moving forward as we give thanks.
[00:37:58] And some will say that's just karma.
[00:38:01] Some will say it's a Hail Mary.
[00:38:04] Some will say it's just good luck.
[00:38:06] But we see it at the Sports Tour Evans and we say, thank you, Jesus.
[00:38:09] Awesome.
[00:38:10] Make sure you like, subscribe, follow, retweet, whatever it is on those social media platforms.
[00:38:15] We love the engagements on YouTube and Instagram.
[00:38:18] I think we will continue to see the most opportunity there.
[00:38:22] So for all you old heads, share us on Facebook.
[00:38:25] X.
[00:38:25] I think we're also on threads now, too.
[00:38:29] And YouTube and Instagram.
[00:38:31] We'll see you guys next week with a special guest.
[00:38:34] Peace.
[00:38:35] Peace.
