[00:00:10] Hey, hey, hey, welcome to the Sports Reverends Podcast. My name is Dan. I'm joined with my big bro. We know him as the coach. He is a coach, not only on the basketball court, but he'll also coach you in the stock market as well. And we got an exciting show for you today. You know, a lot of podcasts, they'll offer some stuff for you to take away. Some will make you laugh. Some will help you get in shape. Some will help you make money.
[00:00:40] The Sports Reverends Podcast, we offer something greater than all those things. We actually offer the solution to all your problems. I know that sounds absolutely crazy, but that's what we do. We point you to the source that's going to be the solution to all of your problems.
[00:00:59] And what you're hearing on this podcast is a bunch of sports takes, but most importantly, our unapologetic faith. It's about Jesus pulling us out of the mud and how sports and faith has shaped our lives. So coach, why don't you give all the Sports Reverends fam a rundown of the docket and let's get going.
[00:01:18] All right. All right. Here we go on the docket today. Quick hitters as always. We're going to talk a little bit about how we did on our picks last week and who we're picking this week.
[00:01:30] We're also talking about the mid-tier on the basketball side, Eastern Western Conferences. We'll briefly touch on some baseball and then getting down to our real talk section, which is always our favorite part, is knowing your role as it applies to both your sports teams and your faith.
[00:01:48] Why don't you start with quick hitters number one?
[00:01:50] Quick hitter news. Let's go. The New York Jets have traded a conditional third round draft pick to the Las Vegas Raiders for Devontae Adams.
[00:02:03] And the Bills have sent a 2025 third round pick, 2026 seventh round pick to the Browns for Amari Cooper and also an additional sixth round pick.
[00:02:16] Quick wild day NFL trades. Let's go.
[00:02:20] GM is most of the known we're potting today because they want to make all these trades.
[00:02:24] A bit of sad news here.
[00:02:26] Rafael Nadal, tennis legend, has announced his retirement and will be done at the end of 2024.
[00:02:32] Philadelphia Phillies have extended manager Rob Thompson through the 2026 season.
[00:02:37] Manchester United has ended Sir Alex Ferguson's role as an ambassador for the club as they're looking to cut costs with dire days, dire days ahead.
[00:02:48] And CBS will host the 111th Gray Cup in Vancouver on November 17th.
[00:02:58] Hopefully those Winnipeg Blue Bombers will be in there.
[00:03:01] All right.
[00:03:02] Weird at CBS though.
[00:03:03] Yeah, a little different for sure.
[00:03:06] All right.
[00:03:06] Time to handle some business.
[00:03:08] We have a new sponsorship.
[00:03:12] We are officially Amazon Marketplace Affiliates.
[00:03:17] That means we're going to have a link in our description of all everywhere you can find the show.
[00:03:23] And if you click that link, it'll open up a bunch of deals, exclusive deals, exclusive products that if you purchase through that link will benefit us and benefit you.
[00:03:35] Everyone loves shopping at Amazon.
[00:03:37] Who doesn't have Amazon Prime?
[00:03:39] Here's your chance to save some money and also support the sports reverence.
[00:03:43] So check that out.
[00:03:45] Buy some stuff.
[00:03:47] You can even let us know what you buy.
[00:03:49] Well, we're excited and we thank you for the support and hope you find some good deals along the way.
[00:03:54] All right.
[00:03:55] That's enough business.
[00:03:56] Absolutely.
[00:03:57] Absolutely.
[00:03:57] All right.
[00:03:57] Let's talk NFL.
[00:03:59] So last week we had five picks that we just thought were winners or losers.
[00:04:04] Our winners.
[00:04:05] Right.
[00:04:05] And so we had San Francisco beating Seattle.
[00:04:08] Big W Baltimore over the Commanders.
[00:04:11] Big W there.
[00:04:12] The Bucs.
[00:04:12] Baker Mayfield rolling again.
[00:04:14] CJ Stroud seems to be finding his groove with another W.
[00:04:17] Our only L for the week in week number six was the New York Jets.
[00:04:24] But they swung for the fences.
[00:04:26] They got Aaron some help.
[00:04:29] Let's put it that way.
[00:04:30] And we'll see if that matters going into week number seven.
[00:04:35] So week number five, we're three and two.
[00:04:38] Week number six, we are four and one.
[00:04:41] Let's see what we can do for week number seven and look to get a bagel in the lost column.
[00:04:48] Start off with, I'll toss you this one.
[00:04:51] I think we should be, this one I think we're on a roll here.
[00:04:54] Houston at Green Bay.
[00:04:55] One o'clock game at Lambeau Field.
[00:04:57] Wow.
[00:04:57] Houston at Green Bay.
[00:04:58] Green Bay is on fire.
[00:05:01] I hate to say it.
[00:05:01] Jordan Love is looking real nice.
[00:05:04] Looking good.
[00:05:05] Depends.
[00:05:06] I guess Houston.
[00:05:07] Oh, man.
[00:05:07] It's so hard to do this early in the week because we don't know if Nico Collins is playing.
[00:05:12] We don't know.
[00:05:14] Yeah.
[00:05:15] I think you're right, though.
[00:05:16] We are rolling with Houston.
[00:05:18] They've been good to us two weeks in a row.
[00:05:20] Our picks have been pretty good.
[00:05:21] Let's go.
[00:05:22] Let's go.
[00:05:22] Houston.
[00:05:22] I'm down with Houston.
[00:05:23] Yeah.
[00:05:24] I'm down.
[00:05:24] Let's go.
[00:05:25] Let's go.
[00:05:25] Three in a row.
[00:05:26] Three in a row.
[00:05:28] This is going to be a tough one, but I think the answer should be fairly clear.
[00:05:33] Kansas City at San Francisco.
[00:05:35] Oh, my goodness.
[00:05:37] How is the answer clear?
[00:05:38] I have no read on this.
[00:05:40] What is it?
[00:05:40] You talked me into it.
[00:05:41] My read here is Kansas City's rolling.
[00:05:44] San Francisco had a good game out of Brock Purdy, but I don't think the defense is as healthy
[00:05:50] as it needs to be.
[00:05:51] Kansas City is going to roll this one through.
[00:05:54] Wow.
[00:05:55] I know.
[00:05:56] Take it against my own team.
[00:05:57] I know.
[00:05:58] I know.
[00:05:59] But I feel the KC train is too hard right now.
[00:06:02] Can we put this on the maybe section?
[00:06:04] We'll put a pin on it.
[00:06:05] We'll put a pin on it.
[00:06:06] That's fine.
[00:06:06] Yeah.
[00:06:09] How about...
[00:06:09] Ooh.
[00:06:10] This one is a bit of a challenge.
[00:06:15] The Patriots at Jacksonville.
[00:06:17] Two tough teams.
[00:06:18] They're back in London again.
[00:06:20] Can Jacksonville pull something up?
[00:06:22] Wow.
[00:06:23] Yeah.
[00:06:24] Statistically, everything points for Jacksonville to win.
[00:06:27] I said that last week as well.
[00:06:30] I'm glad we didn't put them in our five last week, but I think this week we should.
[00:06:36] I think all the trends about being in London, having more experience in London and have been
[00:06:44] there for a longer time really helps them.
[00:06:46] Plus, they're desperate.
[00:06:48] And the Patriots are going to be starting Drake May.
[00:06:51] He had an okay showing as a rookie.
[00:06:53] He had to throw the ball a lot.
[00:06:55] But...
[00:06:55] He did.
[00:06:56] I think rookie going to London.
[00:06:59] I'm going with Jacksonville.
[00:07:01] What do you think?
[00:07:03] Yeah.
[00:07:03] I'm thinking Jacksonville.
[00:07:05] They are desperate.
[00:07:06] I think that's excellently put.
[00:07:09] And additionally, you're looking at an inexperienced May coming in.
[00:07:15] Second start.
[00:07:16] You're kind of flipping the whole prep thing.
[00:07:19] So we're going to...
[00:07:20] I think we take Jacksonville for sure.
[00:07:22] Okay.
[00:07:23] Jacksonville.
[00:07:23] Let's lock it in.
[00:07:24] Lock it in.
[00:07:25] All right.
[00:07:26] Oh, that's a...
[00:07:27] Jacksonville, Houston.
[00:07:28] It's a tough thing to choose Jacksonville these days.
[00:07:32] How about this?
[00:07:33] I think this one is going to be a...
[00:07:35] I think it's going to be okay.
[00:07:36] But you might have a different take.
[00:07:38] Tennessee at Buffalo.
[00:07:39] I think Buffalo is going to put on the show.
[00:07:42] Yes.
[00:07:43] I'm glad you asked that one.
[00:07:45] Because the addition of Amari Cooper.
[00:07:49] Some stats for you.
[00:07:50] He has been one of the most elite receivers when it comes to man coverage.
[00:07:57] The Buffalo Bills, that's exactly where they've been struggling.
[00:08:00] You've seen where they've missed Stephon Diggs.
[00:08:02] Amari Cooper won't have that crazy diva-like wide receiver number one.
[00:08:10] I think he fits perfect.
[00:08:12] He's a hard worker.
[00:08:14] He's one of those blue-collar kind of run through the tackles.
[00:08:17] I'm definitely with the Bills.
[00:08:19] Bills have now elevated with this trade into a top-tier team, in my opinion.
[00:08:24] So Bills all the way.
[00:08:26] Perfect.
[00:08:27] We're both locking in on the Bills.
[00:08:29] How about the other big trade?
[00:08:30] Do you think the Jets can beat Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh?
[00:08:34] Yeah, I think absolutely.
[00:08:36] I think the Jets probably should have won that game on Monday night.
[00:08:40] That gave us a loss.
[00:08:41] They had a couple missed kicks.
[00:08:42] They're trying to blame it on the wind.
[00:08:43] And the flags on the field goal posts weren't even moving.
[00:08:48] And they're saying, oh, the wind gusts are up to 30 miles per hour.
[00:08:51] And no, yeah, I think they just blew the kicks.
[00:08:54] But yeah, I'm going to Jets.
[00:08:55] I think Devontae Adams is going to make everything easier.
[00:08:57] All pressure on Aaron Rodgers.
[00:08:59] So come on.
[00:09:00] No more excuses.
[00:09:01] No more excuses, Aaron.
[00:09:03] It's all on him.
[00:09:05] This is a bit of a challenge.
[00:09:07] Did you see him throw Mike Williams under the bus?
[00:09:10] Oh, big time.
[00:09:11] Big time.
[00:09:12] Not running his richest.
[00:09:16] Chocked him under there.
[00:09:18] Yeah.
[00:09:18] Was that leverage to bring in Devontae Adams, though?
[00:09:21] Maybe.
[00:09:22] I think he's unhappy.
[00:09:24] But he's pulled all the triggers now this year.
[00:09:26] New coach.
[00:09:28] He's got a big weapon.
[00:09:30] Offense is clearly in his hands.
[00:09:33] He's got to deliver.
[00:09:35] Granted, they're not that far off the pace right now.
[00:09:39] But things can go ugly pretty quick.
[00:09:41] Right?
[00:09:42] So let's go with...
[00:09:45] Okay.
[00:09:45] I think this should be a lock.
[00:09:47] Philly.
[00:09:48] At the Giants.
[00:09:49] Interdivisional game.
[00:09:51] What do you think?
[00:09:52] They're in New York.
[00:09:53] Yeah.
[00:09:54] And I know Philly's been a bit uneven.
[00:09:56] Also a tough one.
[00:09:57] It's the divisional games.
[00:09:59] They're statistically hard to choose because they just beat up on each other.
[00:10:02] For most divisions in the NFL.
[00:10:04] I think Philly will win.
[00:10:06] Yeah, I think Philly will win.
[00:10:07] But I don't think it's going to be...
[00:10:08] I think we're going to be sweating this one.
[00:10:10] If we lock it in.
[00:10:13] I'm okay sweating this one.
[00:10:14] I have a bit of faith here.
[00:10:16] I think we're going to go 5-0 this week.
[00:10:19] All right.
[00:10:20] That wraps up our NFL recap here.
[00:10:22] So the Sports Reds 5 for this week.
[00:10:25] Jacksonville.
[00:10:26] Houston.
[00:10:27] Buffalo.
[00:10:28] The Jets.
[00:10:29] And Philly.
[00:10:29] Even though we're not feeling the great about Philly, we're picking Philly.
[00:10:32] On to my favorite thing to talk about.
[00:10:35] Basketball.
[00:10:36] We're going through the mid-tier right now of each conference.
[00:10:40] So the middle tier in the East and middle tier in the West.
[00:10:43] And so who do we have going first?
[00:10:46] Who are we going to talk about?
[00:10:46] The Atlanta Hawks.
[00:10:49] Big DeJounte Murray trade.
[00:10:51] So they got off DeJounte Murray.
[00:10:53] I think they're going to be worse.
[00:10:56] I don't think Trey is the guy.
[00:10:58] He can't be the guy.
[00:11:00] He doesn't play defense.
[00:11:01] Sure, he stretches the D on offense.
[00:11:05] But can you count on him on crunch time to get you that bucket?
[00:11:08] I don't think so.
[00:11:10] Too small.
[00:11:11] Not good enough, D.
[00:11:12] What are your thoughts?
[00:11:13] You know, they had the number one pick.
[00:11:17] Alex Zachary Rissasheer from France.
[00:11:22] Watching him in preseason.
[00:11:23] I know it's preseason.
[00:11:24] He looks good.
[00:11:25] He looks like a great fit for them.
[00:11:27] I still think they'll be mid-tier.
[00:11:30] Probably on the lower end.
[00:11:31] But they'll be like...
[00:11:33] You're probably right.
[00:11:34] They're probably worse.
[00:11:35] But their future is brighter.
[00:11:37] And there might be a better fit with Trey Young there.
[00:11:40] Tossing him lobs.
[00:11:41] They'll be mid-tier still.
[00:11:43] I think they'll sniff the play in.
[00:11:45] But 10th would be kind of where I expected to finish.
[00:11:48] Up next.
[00:11:49] The Chicago Bulls.
[00:11:51] The return of Lonzo.
[00:11:54] You know what?
[00:11:55] They're still going to be mid-tier.
[00:11:57] They're still...
[00:11:58] They lost to Rosen.
[00:11:59] Like, my goodness.
[00:12:00] They're going to be...
[00:12:01] They might be...
[00:12:02] You know what?
[00:12:02] They're going to be bottom-tier.
[00:12:04] I'm dropping them one.
[00:12:04] Ooh, that's tough.
[00:12:05] I think Lonzo...
[00:12:07] Probably not going to play a ton of games.
[00:12:09] So we can't really expect him to rejuvenate the franchise.
[00:12:12] It really depends if they do with Zach Levine.
[00:12:14] If they're able to get something out of Zach Levine...
[00:12:18] In terms of a trade.
[00:12:20] Not the way he's playing.
[00:12:21] Because he's been a decent player.
[00:12:22] If they get some trades and build some depth on that team.
[00:12:26] Get rid of Vucevic.
[00:12:27] And decide on identity.
[00:12:30] I think they'll be okay.
[00:12:31] I agree with you.
[00:12:33] I think some of those bottom five teams are going to make a push.
[00:12:37] Chicago is one of those teams I can see falling off.
[00:12:40] And dropping into the lower tier.
[00:12:42] So are they mid-tier or lower tier?
[00:12:44] No, they're going to drop into the lower tier.
[00:12:46] I see them dropping.
[00:12:47] Alright, next one up.
[00:12:48] The Miami Heat.
[00:12:50] Mid-tier right now.
[00:12:52] I'm going to say they stay in the mid-tier.
[00:12:55] Probably on the upper echelon of things.
[00:12:57] I think Jimmy Butler has gotten healthy.
[00:12:59] And it all is based on him.
[00:13:01] They have the guys around him that are Heat culture.
[00:13:04] The dogs.
[00:13:05] You know, they work hard.
[00:13:06] But yeah, I'm going mid-tier.
[00:13:09] Jimmy Butler is healthy.
[00:13:11] Well, post-playoffs last year.
[00:13:13] After the Heat lost.
[00:13:15] Jimmy said a few things.
[00:13:16] And Pat Riley came out and said a few things.
[00:13:19] You know, Jimmy can't talk.
[00:13:21] He was not playing, basically.
[00:13:22] So, I think for Miami.
[00:13:25] They're okay being a mid-tier team.
[00:13:27] Because it's championship or bust for them.
[00:13:30] They have an interesting roster.
[00:13:32] But Jimmy's got a ball out.
[00:13:34] Tyler Hero has got a ball out.
[00:13:35] And really step up to that contract.
[00:13:37] And we'll see if they can kind of get that cohesion of that whole.
[00:13:42] Because, you know, they had the mid-season trade anyway.
[00:13:44] Right?
[00:13:44] So, that kind of disrupted a few things.
[00:13:47] I think they're going to finish in between these 8-7 spot.
[00:13:50] 8-6 spot again.
[00:13:52] But will be a real push come playoff time.
[00:13:56] All right.
[00:13:57] Next one up.
[00:13:57] The Philadelphia 70s.
[00:13:59] Coach, you go first this time.
[00:14:01] Okay.
[00:14:02] This is a tough one for me.
[00:14:04] I think the addition of Paul George helps him in the regular season.
[00:14:08] And Bede will play a lot of games at home, probably.
[00:14:11] And he won't play his 65.
[00:14:12] He's already talked about, I'm going for a championship.
[00:14:15] This is an interesting team.
[00:14:17] Maxley really has to, or Tariq's Maxley has to really drive the ship here.
[00:14:21] I still don't think they're going to win enough games against the top echelon to really make a change.
[00:14:26] I think they're finishing the 7th spot.
[00:14:29] 7th or 6th spot.
[00:14:31] Yeah.
[00:14:32] That's a tough call.
[00:14:33] Yeah, I probably agree with you.
[00:14:35] They stay mid-tier.
[00:14:36] I think Paul George already has an injury.
[00:14:38] So they're all going to collectively miss enough games for them not to be in the upper echelon.
[00:14:44] I think come playoff time, if they're healthy, they're a top team in the East for sure.
[00:14:48] But that's a big if.
[00:14:49] A big if.
[00:19:45] The addition of Jontae Murray with Buddy Ceeves, CJ.
[00:19:49] I think that's a great combo.
[00:19:51] I'm big on the Pelicans.
[00:19:52] I'm moving them up to top tier.
[00:19:55] Probably around the bottom.
[00:19:56] That's 5th.
[00:19:56] I'm going to play.
[00:19:57] Okay.
[00:19:58] The big question mark for Calvin will be what will you do with Brandon in the East?
[00:20:02] If he comes out couty without a few wins and signing the contract, he can easily derail
[00:20:08] his team.
[00:20:09] He won't play well.
[00:20:10] I think he has so many tools to show why he was drafted on the East.
[00:20:16] I think the health of Zion is a big aspect as well.
[00:20:20] But Jontae Murray will give them a pace factor they haven't had in a while.
[00:20:26] You don't need Zion bringing up the ball.
[00:20:28] You just have Jontae to take it and go.
[00:20:30] I really like it.
[00:20:31] I really like this team.
[00:20:32] He plays excellent.
[00:20:33] I think New Orleans, I'm agreeing with you on this, is one of the teams that makes a push
[00:20:38] to the top five.
[00:20:39] Woo!
[00:20:41] I really like this team.
[00:20:42] They ended the season well.
[00:20:43] As you said, without having Zion getting hurt, they could have done some real damage.
[00:20:49] I like it.
[00:20:50] I like it.
[00:20:50] I mean, next pod, there's going to be people coming out of our top five.
[00:20:53] So that's fun.
[00:20:54] Now we're on to L.A.
[00:20:57] Beat L.A.
[00:20:58] No, the Los Angeles Blazers, LeBron, James.
[00:21:01] I'll go first.
[00:21:02] I think they are finishing in the same tier as well on the lower end.
[00:21:07] I think they're going to struggle this year.
[00:21:09] They didn't make any moves.
[00:21:11] So what are they going to do?
[00:21:14] I have them lower of the second tier.
[00:21:16] I think they're not intentional.
[00:21:19] Yeah, I agree too as well.
[00:21:21] I think there's a couple factors going against him.
[00:21:23] Number one, J.J. Redick, great as an analyst and commentator.
[00:21:28] I haven't liked him as a coach so far.
[00:21:32] He's been very combative with the media and there's a lot of pressure on him.
[00:21:35] I get it.
[00:21:36] But he doesn't feel like he's in control.
[00:21:38] And while you do have LeBron James, he's also a very strong voice.
[00:21:43] He needs a coach who can manage LeBron but also have authority.
[00:21:49] He needs that voice to drive that.
[00:21:52] He's because LeBron is an idea.
[00:21:53] He can't see anything like him.
[00:21:55] Second, LeBron James has done one for 11 in the last couple of games.
[00:21:59] The headlines are going to be about him and LeBron playing together.
[00:22:03] It feels like a bit of a farewell tear for LeBron.
[00:22:06] I don't think they're locked in.
[00:22:08] And I don't think this is going to be a farewell for LeBron-y.
[00:22:12] Lakers would be happy to sniff 10th place.
[00:22:15] I think just because they have LeBron, they'll be in contention for the play-in spot.
[00:22:22] But I don't expect them to know.
[00:22:24] I like it.
[00:22:26] Last one of the day.
[00:22:29] The Phoenix Suns.
[00:22:33] This is a tough one.
[00:22:34] I feel bad saying this, but they're dropping off.
[00:22:37] I don't believe in this team.
[00:22:38] I don't believe they have the depth to do this.
[00:22:40] I don't like it.
[00:22:41] I don't like it.
[00:22:42] I love Kevin Durant.
[00:22:44] But they just are too top-heavy.
[00:22:46] They're too top-heavy.
[00:22:48] And trading.
[00:22:49] And you had to put the tips in to trade for Beale last year.
[00:22:52] Beale is not, again, he's not a healthy guy all the time.
[00:22:54] He's a healthy guy.
[00:22:56] And Durant is the only player on this team that is consistent.
[00:23:02] Anthony Edwards hates Devin Booker today.
[00:23:07] He's a player.
[00:23:07] He killed him.
[00:23:09] Is that all around Devin Booker?
[00:23:13] He's not.
[00:23:14] I'm not sold on this team anymore.
[00:23:17] Okay, I'll click back a little bit on that.
[00:23:19] I'm actually pretty, I think I'm a little bit higher on the,
[00:23:24] and probably most people.
[00:23:25] I think Tyus Jones, the addition of Tyus Jones, gives them a point guard.
[00:23:29] A point guard that's not going to turn the ball over.
[00:23:32] It can take pressure off Devin Booker to be their point guard,
[00:23:35] to be their backup point guard.
[00:23:37] I think it's going to help them a lot.
[00:23:38] I really think not having a proper point guard with those guys was too much.
[00:23:43] They needed something to facilitate.
[00:23:45] And I think Tyus Jones is great for that.
[00:23:47] I do think you're right.
[00:23:48] Their Jets are still weak.
[00:23:50] They had some pieces before the playoffs they picked up.
[00:23:53] But they've got to be able to defend.
[00:23:55] They've got to be able to defend.
[00:23:56] And like you said, those Timberwolves ate them up.
[00:23:59] Anthony Edwards ate them up.
[00:24:00] But I have them stiff.
[00:24:02] They're still into the top ones here.
[00:24:05] Yeah, that's a difference.
[00:24:07] But like around five, yeah.
[00:24:10] I feel health would make a lot of difference.
[00:24:12] So we'll see.
[00:24:13] Yes.
[00:24:14] That's a pick.
[00:24:15] That's a pick.
[00:24:15] There you go.
[00:24:16] There you go.
[00:24:17] All right.
[00:24:17] That is our NBA wrap-up.
[00:24:19] So there's been a lot of movement in the West.
[00:24:21] We're going to see who comes out of our top five.
[00:24:24] East is fairly stable.
[00:24:25] Briefly, briefly, briefly take a swing at these 99-mile-per-hour pitches
[00:24:28] coming through for baseball.
[00:24:30] Yankees, Cleveland are playing tonight.
[00:24:32] Who do you pick in?
[00:24:34] We're going with the New York Yankees.
[00:24:37] Yeah, I agree with you 100%.
[00:24:39] They've looked like the strongest team in the AL for the whole playoffs.
[00:24:43] Dodgers versus the Mets.
[00:24:46] Shout out to the Mets.
[00:24:47] I know you want your city series there, but I can't go against Shohei.
[00:24:52] They look too good.
[00:24:54] Go Dodgers.
[00:24:55] Go Dodgers.
[00:24:56] Well, the Dodgers blew them out once.
[00:24:58] The Mets blew them out once.
[00:24:59] So it's a bit more of an uneven series.
[00:25:01] I'm still hoping for a Subway series.
[00:25:03] Throwback.
[00:25:04] Throwback to when the Jeter-led Yankees were around.
[00:25:08] All right, let's go take care of some business.
[00:25:10] Train to Invest.
[00:25:11] That's the company I work for.

[00:25:24] If you look at your statements and you don't like what you've seen in terms of your return.
[00:25:28] Or if you just have this big question about what exactly is inflation and why is it eating up my paycheck.

[00:25:55] That's the biggest thing.
[00:25:56] You give it to an institutional investor.
[00:25:58] It goes into a big fund.
[00:26:00] And they don't care.
[00:26:01] All they care about is how much of a percentage they're earning.
[00:26:05] You will care about your money.

[00:26:27] Train2invest.com
[00:26:29] All right.
[00:26:30] Business taken care of.
[00:26:32] Now time for the best part of the pod, I think.
[00:26:36] The real talk section.
[00:26:37] We're calling it Know Your Role.
[00:26:40] And I'm sure each of us have said that to teammates.
[00:26:44] I'm sure teammates have said that to us.
[00:26:46] But it also applies to our faith.
[00:26:49] And we're talking about sports.
[00:26:50] Athletes today are typically, they're typically brash.
[00:26:54] They're arrogant.
[00:26:55] They desire to be worshipped.
[00:26:57] I mean, you think of the star wide receivers.
[00:26:59] You talk about WR1 kings and queens.
[00:27:03] That's how you get the idea of an athlete.
[00:27:05] And often they feel entitled for that praise.
[00:27:09] And it's weird because we're worshipping these guys who get paid to play a game.
[00:27:14] Which is really just not fair.
[00:27:17] But that's life.
[00:27:19] In your career as an athlete, have you ever had what your role has been laid out for you?
[00:27:26] Can you give us an example of that?
[00:27:27] And an example of a time where you thought you were better than your role.
[00:27:31] And how that turned out for you.
[00:27:34] Oh, an illustrious career that I had.
[00:27:39] Yeah, my role was to, on the basketball court, was to pass the ball, defend the best player, hit open shots.
[00:27:47] That was my role that was originally given to me.
[00:27:50] I think to start, that was probably what I was supposed to do as I developed as a player.
[00:27:57] Where I think, no, I don't think.
[00:28:00] I know in my mind, I was like, this is not the role for me.
[00:28:03] I need to do more.
[00:28:05] I want to be the guy.
[00:28:07] I want to be at least Scottie Pippen if I wasn't going to be Michael Jordan.
[00:28:11] And I had to forge my own way to do that.
[00:28:15] That was a very big learning process for me.
[00:28:17] I would not naturally that way.
[00:28:19] Naturally, I am a pass first person.
[00:28:21] But I had to really learn how to be a little bit more selfish in that sense.
[00:28:26] Which I don't think.
[00:28:27] Most people have that attitude.
[00:28:32] If they have the ball in their hands, they're ready to shoot.
[00:28:34] They're ready to get the glory.
[00:28:35] I'm excited when I make the pass or do what's the role that's going to get the team the glory.
[00:28:43] That brought me more joy.
[00:28:45] And so I had to really forge my way to coaching, coached by you.
[00:28:49] You've got to make sure you get your own stats as well on top of being a team guy.
[00:28:53] Yeah, I think you and I had very similar playing styles.
[00:28:58] Obviously, you watched a lot of how I played.
[00:29:01] And you learned way more than I could ever learn.
[00:29:04] And that was really cool to see.
[00:29:05] But you were right.
[00:29:06] You really had to forge your own play style.
[00:29:10] Because you had different teammates than I did.
[00:29:13] And you had a different, you know, I would say I want to call it era of basketball.
[00:29:16] A different style of playing.
[00:29:18] Because no offense, but a lot of your teammates loved basketball way more than mine did.
[00:29:24] And so there was a different level of attention to detail.
[00:29:27] And even though guys in my grade, if we matched up grade 12 and grade 12, we would dwarf you guys.
[00:29:35] Because we had some really big monsters on the team.
[00:29:38] I think the basketball IQ is probably a little higher.
[00:29:40] So that's an interesting take.
[00:29:42] Do you have a, maybe an example before I give anything, of a role where you needed to be in that role for you to become better?
[00:29:52] Whether it was through basketball or soccer, volleyball, or work or whatever.
[00:29:56] You needed to be put into that place so that you could excel further.
[00:29:59] Yeah, actually, when I was grade 10 in our junior varsity basketball team, our best guy, Sean, was injured.
[00:30:07] And our other best player was Matt Eisbrenner.
[00:30:10] They called him up to play for varsity.
[00:30:12] That means it automatically pushed me into the role of learning how to be the guy.
[00:30:17] And it was just an amazing opportunity for me.
[00:30:22] Tons of growth in myself, of learning how to take the burden of leading a team.
[00:30:28] And yeah, that's the best example of it.
[00:30:30] So it was kind of an opportunity that opened up for me.
[00:30:35] I don't know if I would have been able to learn that way without it.
[00:30:38] I needed it.
[00:30:39] Yeah, absolutely.
[00:30:41] No, that's a good example.
[00:30:42] I know for me as well.
[00:30:45] I think I had to forge a lot to get to where I needed to.
[00:30:48] I remember playing basketball in grade 7 and 8.
[00:30:51] We were playing a 2-3 zone.
[00:30:53] And I was trying to shoot that baseline jumper.
[00:30:55] And I think Matt Toombs blocked me four times in a row during the tryout period.
[00:31:02] And I just knew I was getting cut.
[00:31:03] And I think getting cut and put on the B team allowed me to experience failure, really, for the first time.
[00:31:11] I mean, growing up, you know, grade 1 to 6, I didn't really cut anybody, right?
[00:31:15] So getting cut was a real experience and learning that feeling.
[00:31:21] And that helped me a lot because when I played district basketball, I only made the team because I hustled hard.
[00:31:28] I ended up starting for that team.
[00:31:30] When I played provincial team, I was undersized at center.
[00:31:33] But I, again, worked really hard and I became provincial MVP.
[00:31:38] So, and I was also probably one of the, I think I was the first graduating all-star and triple-A all-star at LCA for basketball.
[00:31:45] And all that was forged because I was given a role.
[00:31:48] I accepted that role, but I also knew that I could do more.
[00:31:52] And I pushed myself and you pushed yourselves.
[00:31:55] And I mean, you know, a lot of guys who push themselves to be better.
[00:31:59] But there's also on the other side of guys who just relied on their talent, didn't work that hard.
[00:32:04] So this is, it's something that is interesting because the concept of team relies on people playing the roles.
[00:32:13] An easy example would be the dream team.
[00:32:16] I think, I don't know, and maybe you can think of something, but I don't know of a specific team at such a high level where all these guys had to shift their perspective on where they fit in.
[00:32:30] And I say that because there's a lot of ego involved in basketball.
[00:32:33] There's only one ball.
[00:32:35] And the minutes, you can only have so many guys on the court and so many minutes.
[00:32:39] It's a big task to juggle all those egos.
[00:32:42] But it's an even bigger task to get the buy-in from players.
[00:32:47] What are your thoughts on that?
[00:32:49] Yeah, I think especially at the NBA level, it can be frustrating for players because so much of their statistics are tied to contracts, tied to awards.
[00:32:59] So there's no, you know, the non-stat awards, especially like a Draymond Green.
[00:33:05] I know we threw some shade on him, but he also does a lot of things that don't get counted as.
[00:33:11] In the stats book, he is with Steph Curry.
[00:33:14] They are the greatest, not the greatest.
[00:33:16] They are in the current NBA most effective one-two punch and has brought the most efficient Steph Curry when Draymond Green's on the floor.
[00:33:25] When Draymond's not on the floor, Steph Curry drops in his efficiency dramatically.
[00:33:31] With those stats in mind, I understand their contracts are a part of it.
[00:33:36] They are all making ridiculous amounts of money.
[00:33:41] But I think that's what plays a part in selfishness.
[00:33:45] But if you really want to win, you're going to be okay with your $20 million.
[00:33:50] You're going to be okay.
[00:33:53] I think they have such a small picture of legacy.
[00:33:57] You know, they think in a year's term or even their contracts term instead of their career term and lasting legacy impact.
[00:34:05] And I think that's where a lot of these athletes get derailed.
[00:34:08] Yeah, it's about the here and now, right?
[00:34:10] So what have you done for me lately?
[00:34:11] And I think, yeah, I think you hit the nail on the head on that piece.
[00:34:14] And when you're talking about your role, it's also talking about who designs your role, right?
[00:34:22] And you have to trust that person will have your best interest at heart.
[00:34:27] And in team sports, it's harder because it's not necessarily your best interest.
[00:34:32] It's the best interest of the team, right?
[00:34:35] You may be a great individual player in this area, but they need something different.
[00:34:41] And when you're talking about defining your role, as believers, we're called to, and I put this very eloquently, I would say, participate in the kingdom of heaven.
[00:34:52] And we all have different roles.
[00:34:54] And for example, you're a pastor.
[00:34:56] You know, I could do what you do, but I couldn't do it as well as you do because of your skill set and your heart and your desire.
[00:35:04] Right?
[00:35:05] Right?
[00:35:05] There's all these different things that we are called to do.
[00:35:10] And that's something that a lot of Christians struggle with.
[00:35:14] Whether you're a new believer or you've been around for a while, it's always that question of, am I doing the right thing?
[00:35:22] Am I doing enough?
[00:35:24] Am I actually listening to the voice of God?
[00:35:27] You know, there's a period of time where in your faith you're like, is this God telling me what to do?
[00:35:33] Is this the world telling me what to do?
[00:35:34] There's confusion as you grow in your faith.
[00:35:37] How do you suggest that you find your place in God's plan?
[00:35:42] I think the first thing everyone should do is have a mindset shift.
[00:35:50] You know, you look at the history through scripture.
[00:35:54] You look at a guy like Moses.
[00:35:56] God called a guy like Moses to lead.
[00:35:59] The man couldn't even talk.
[00:36:01] Right?
[00:36:01] He had this stutter.
[00:36:03] And he called him to go in front of the biggest, baddest dude and say, let my people go.
[00:36:10] Right?
[00:36:10] So it's a mindset shift of saying, it's not about my ability.
[00:36:13] It's not about my skill set.
[00:36:16] Because even in what I believe with my ability and skill set, I don't think I have great ability
[00:36:21] and skill set.
[00:36:22] I haven't always loved speaking in public.
[00:36:25] But these open doors and what I believe I am called to do is to do so.
[00:36:31] And so it's a mindset shift saying, Lord, I will serve you however you call me, whether
[00:36:37] it seems crazy in my mindset or not.
[00:36:40] Because you know the way you have a purpose and plan.
[00:36:42] There's story after story of broken and messed up people being called to do these amazing
[00:36:49] tasks.
[00:36:50] And yeah, so it's more being faithful than believing in just in your ability.
[00:36:59] Yeah.
[00:37:00] So I think that you're saying being faithful is important.
[00:37:03] It's also being obedient is important as well in terms of playing your role.
[00:37:08] I know like growing up, and I'm sure mom and dad told you, you know, pray for opportunities.
[00:37:14] Right?
[00:37:16] I can think of this very distinct memory.
[00:37:20] We used to play hockey on the street outside in the summertime from noon until whenever.
[00:37:26] Left side versus right side, all that kind of stuff.
[00:37:28] And I remember going to youth group and being said, hey, bring your friends, invite people.
[00:37:32] And I went and invited this one of the guys, and they were Catholic.
[00:37:36] And his parents said, no, that's okay.
[00:37:39] He goes to Catholic church.
[00:37:40] It's fine.
[00:37:41] So I said, okay, that's fine.
[00:37:42] And I came back and I was talking to my dad.
[00:37:44] And he goes, well, did you pray about it?
[00:37:45] And I go, what do you mean?
[00:37:47] Well, did you ask God about this before you went over there?
[00:37:50] And I said, no, I just went.
[00:37:51] And he's like, you've got to, when you're doing something like that, you want to ask for opportunities.
[00:37:57] Because that might not have been the right opportunity to do that.
[00:38:01] God may have wanted you to do something different.
[00:38:03] You need to ask for opportunities.
[00:38:05] And when opportunities come, you need to be bold enough to take the opportunity and step out of the faith.
[00:38:12] Because, like we talked about a couple of pods back, as you said, love God and love others.
[00:38:18] Right?
[00:38:19] And loving others is asking for that opportunity to show love.
[00:38:23] Right?
[00:38:23] And I mean, in our day-to-day correspondence, you're nice to people generally.
[00:38:28] You know, you say, please, thank you.
[00:38:30] Not only when you walk by them.
[00:38:31] But asking for a specific opportunity to show God's love will open so many different doors for you.
[00:38:38] And that's part of what we're talking about in terms of your role.
[00:38:42] So, we are talking about opportunities.
[00:38:45] What are some other things that we can do as believers to try and determine what our role is and if we're on the right path?
[00:38:53] Yeah.
[00:38:53] In our pre-show talk, this whole conversation really sparked because of a guy named Jeff T.
[00:38:59] You guys know Jeff T.
[00:39:01] He was honest in an interview when they were trying to build him up about top players that came from Wake Forest.
[00:39:07] And they were trying to say that Muggsy Bogues was better than him.
[00:39:11] Or he was better than Muggsy Bogues.
[00:39:13] And he was like, guys, relax here for a moment here.
[00:39:15] Muggsy Bogues, he was an all-star.
[00:39:17] He was a tough defender.
[00:39:19] He started on this amount of teams.
[00:39:21] You know, my career does not measure up.
[00:39:22] And we thought that was really cool because you're honest with yourself about your role of what you feel like you're called to do, what you're able to do as well.
[00:39:33] And I think that's a huge piece of how this can be a point for yourself and how you are supposed to be ministering to others.
[00:39:43] You've got to be really honest with yourself.
[00:39:44] You know, you can't.
[00:39:46] It's like when you coached or when Coach Carter coaches, right?
[00:39:50] You put your hand on the line.
[00:39:52] Put your hand on the line.
[00:39:54] This is don't make me commit homicide.
[00:39:56] This is a suicide.
[00:39:57] I know we call them champion makers now.
[00:39:59] You know, but you cheating yourself by not touching the line is not going to benefit you when you play the game.
[00:40:05] But when you do the work, when you get yourself ready, when you're doing your best to be prepared in a kingdom standpoint, that is, are you working on yourself to like what you said?
[00:40:16] Are you preparing yourself?
[00:40:17] Are you asking God to lead you?
[00:40:19] Are you in the word?
[00:40:20] Are you trying to study?
[00:40:21] Are you trying to pick up areas where you are sinful and failing?
[00:40:26] Right.
[00:40:26] Obviously, you don't have to be perfect, but you should still be doing the work.
[00:40:29] And if you are really honest with yourself, if you're really honest with allowing God to lead you, have his agenda, not my agenda, because my agenda is going to be less or is going to be more convenient.
[00:40:39] That's a big, I guess, stepping stone for most people.
[00:40:44] Yeah.
[00:40:44] And it brings to mind the parable of the talents where, you know, the rich man gives one, five and ten.
[00:40:55] Right.
[00:40:56] And you're asked to go do with this.
[00:40:59] And everybody, you know, ties back to a different part.
[00:41:02] We're talking about our journey, but it's, you're asked to do little things, little things, little things.
[00:41:08] And then a bigger opportunity comes and a bigger opportunity comes and a bigger opportunity comes.
[00:41:12] And you have to be willing to do the dirty work.
[00:41:16] When, you know, I'm making the guys run and touch the line for discipline purposes.
[00:41:24] It's not because I want to be a taskmaster.
[00:41:26] It's not because I enjoy making these guys run and sweat and work hard.
[00:41:31] It's to build that discipline and to build that excellence so they can, when it comes crunch time, they know how to run the play to perfection.
[00:41:42] They have the skills to adapt and to read.
[00:41:45] They have the stamina to persevere.
[00:41:48] Right.
[00:41:50] Right.
[00:41:50] Because the easiest, sorry, the hardest part about a comeback is not the comeback part.
[00:41:56] It's not getting to even.
[00:41:59] It's taking the lead and holding it.
[00:42:02] You expend so much energy and so much effort just to claw back and then to go over the hump is the hardest part.
[00:42:12] You've already given up so much emotional energy, so much physical energy to get there.
[00:42:16] That's why you do the little things over and over and over again.
[00:42:19] And it's the same way, like, when you're going through a trial, you lean on the little things you've done in the past and you see the little things that God has done.
[00:42:32] And you're like, oh, okay, I know I can do this.
[00:42:35] I know, okay, I got to pray every day.
[00:42:37] Maybe you spend an extra 10 minutes praying.
[00:42:40] I got to read my Bible.
[00:42:41] Maybe you spend an extra little bit.
[00:42:43] Just push myself a little further because I feel that this mountain is bigger than before.
[00:42:49] And it's the little repetitions and knowing my role as, hey, God chose me.
[00:42:55] I'm not perfect.
[00:42:58] Just like Moses, I have issues that I can't control and things that I'm not good at.
[00:43:05] But God chose me to do this, so I got to put in the work.
[00:43:09] I got to do the little things.
[00:43:11] I got to be bold and I need to be bold.
[00:43:13] I know there's, you know, I'm sure you've had times you're like, coach, I'm going to do more.
[00:43:18] I want to do more.
[00:43:20] Or I'm going to run something off script because I see an opportunity.
[00:43:26] Right?
[00:43:26] I'm sure there's times you've taken a shot and coach has been like, no, what's he doing?
[00:43:31] But it goes in.
[00:43:32] Transition three was not allowed back in the day.
[00:43:36] I pushed those limits.
[00:43:38] Right?
[00:43:39] But it's looking at an opportunity and saying, okay, this is my time to step up and step in.
[00:43:45] You don't have to be a mega church preacher.
[00:43:49] You don't have to have the most eloquent speeches around.
[00:43:53] You don't have to know all the apologetics to a T.
[00:43:56] Your role is to love God and love others.
[00:44:00] And that sounds simple.
[00:44:02] And it is.
[00:44:03] But there's steps you can take to build that foundation, to build that pad where you can launch off and do more and more and more.
[00:44:13] Right?
[00:44:13] We often think of God as little baby Jesus.
[00:44:17] Right?
[00:44:18] And coming up to Christmas time, you know, that's what we're going to be focusing on.
[00:44:21] Right?
[00:44:21] His little baby Jesus.
[00:44:22] But God is the creator of heaven and earth.
[00:44:26] He's, you know, the king above all kings.
[00:44:28] That's what we talk about.
[00:44:29] Right?
[00:44:30] He's not confined to a little box here on earth.
[00:44:33] He has a plan for your life.
[00:44:37] And if you're willing to take the steps, this journey that your life can be will be amazing.
[00:44:44] And it's just like whatever you're learning in your skill.
[00:44:47] You know, dribbling with my left hand was the hardest thing I had to learn and how to do a left-hand delay.
[00:44:52] I remember walking up and down the driveway, bouncing the ball up and down.
[00:44:56] But I got it.
[00:44:57] And one of the ways I cut people in grade 5, 6, 7, 8 is can you do a left-handed layup?
[00:45:03] So doing the little things both in your personal life as a discipline but also as your spiritual life, that's how you fit your role.
[00:45:09] Yeah.
[00:45:10] It brings me back to the old adage, practice the way you play.
[00:45:16] And, you know, if you're not going to do the work during practice, what's the chances of you doing it during the game?
[00:45:22] If you're not going to do – if you can't show kindness at church, what's the chance of you doing it outside of church, right?
[00:45:28] Yeah.
[00:45:29] And I think that's a great perspective to have, right?
[00:45:33] You got to do the work.
[00:45:35] You got to practice the way you play in your Christian walk.
[00:45:37] Yeah, absolutely.
[00:45:38] I think that's a really – it's a profound statement that kind of goes under the radar.
[00:45:45] A lot of times, you know, like church – what people say, you know, why don't you want to come to church with me?
[00:45:50] Because they've had a bad experience in church.
[00:45:52] Whether it's a gossip, whether it's people not being friendly, whether it's who knows what, right?
[00:46:01] A lot of times, it's something that's happened in the physical building that's pushed them away.
[00:46:06] And really, that should be like the biggest place of love, of hope, of peace, right?
[00:46:16] Yes, it's not the physical building.
[00:46:18] It's the people there, right?
[00:46:19] And we know everybody's not perfect.
[00:46:20] When you're coming to worship God in a group setting like that, it should be a very welcoming place.
[00:46:27] And you're right.
[00:46:27] If you can't show those – that spirit in the church, how are you going to show that when you're out with the boys and they say, hey, let's go to the strip club?
[00:46:39] Or after work drinks, hey, you know what, let's just have three more.
[00:46:43] Or whatever the case may be.
[00:46:45] It's very hard to stand up for your faith that way because you don't have that foundation built with the group of believers.
[00:46:53] Right?
[00:46:54] And I think, and you probably agree, is one way to help build your foundation is going to club, going to prayer groups, making that extra effort outside of just, oh, I'm going to church at 10 o'clock.
[00:47:10] Right?
[00:47:10] To really grow your faith and grow your base.
[00:47:14] What have you seen empirically as you've run the church now for a couple of years?
[00:47:21] How has having those events or groups helped others grow and find their place and their role?
[00:47:30] The Bible studies and life groups is what you're asking about?
[00:47:32] Yeah.
[00:47:33] Yeah.
[00:47:33] Yeah.
[00:47:34] That's exactly – that hopefully becomes the heartbeat of our church because that's where you grow.
[00:47:41] That's the place where you can ask questions.
[00:47:44] You can study and go deeper than just your ready daily devotions that you're supposed to be doing.
[00:47:51] Right?
[00:47:52] That's where you grow deeper.
[00:47:53] That's where you grow stronger.
[00:47:54] That's where you also build community and friendships as well.
[00:47:57] So it's a huge part of everything you want to do.
[00:48:00] Right?
[00:48:00] It's the midweek practice.
[00:48:03] It's the 6 a.m. practice, whatever it is.
[00:48:06] It's you've got to make it a part of who you are and what you do so that you actually aren't just showing up on Sunday and getting your refill and you're not practicing any more faith stuff until next Sunday.
[00:48:17] Right?
[00:48:19] Yeah.
[00:48:20] And you would think that Sunday is game day, but it's not.
[00:48:25] Sunday is just your group workout.
[00:48:28] You have your individual practices and your smaller groups and come to a big group on Sunday.
[00:48:32] Game day is when you're at work and somebody's having a tough time and you talk to them about things and you be there for them.
[00:48:40] Game day is having the spirit prompt you to pray for somebody that you haven't thought about in 10 years and you do it.
[00:48:49] Yeah.
[00:48:49] Sunday is the ice bath.
[00:48:50] Sunday is the ice bath.
[00:48:51] Yeah.
[00:48:52] The recovery day.
[00:48:52] It's the recovery day.
[00:48:53] Yeah.
[00:48:53] Absolutely.
[00:48:54] Right?
[00:48:54] So I think, you know, coming from a non-pastor view, everybody thinks Sunday, you get dressed up for church, you go and worship God.
[00:49:02] And that's the highlight of your spiritual week is church.
[00:49:10] That's just a refresher.
[00:49:12] That's just the, hey, I'm going to fill myself up so I can fill in with somebody else.
[00:49:17] And I think the ice bath is a great example because you practice all week.
[00:49:20] You play the game all week.
[00:49:22] You come to church, you just recover and you get fed and you feed into others, which also feeds you.
[00:49:30] So I think that's a challenge I put for all you guys out there who are listening.
[00:49:35] And, you know, don't view Sunday as your big game day.
[00:49:39] Leave that for the NFL.
[00:49:42] Sunday is your recovery day.
[00:49:44] And I think the challenge that we both would say is get in the game.
[00:49:49] That's the biggest part of your role is getting into the game and finding a way to do that.
[00:49:52] Any final thoughts before you wrap up today, Pastor Daniel?
[00:49:56] No, that's all good.
[00:49:57] I think practice the way you play.
[00:49:59] Put that in every aspect of your life and you're going to see growth and change and movement in your own Christian journey.
[00:50:06] Christian walk, Christian adventure, whatever you want to call it.
[00:50:08] Awesome.
[00:50:09] Practice the way you play.
[00:50:10] Anyway, check us out on Instagram.
[00:50:12] Check us out on Facebook for all you old heads out there.
[00:50:14] YouTube will be up on the Wednesday.
[00:50:17] Please, please, please like, subscribe and send us a comment.
[00:50:20] We love interacting with your comments.
[00:50:23] Sports about five is up.
[00:50:24] Are we going to go five and oh?
[00:50:26] I think we're going to have a bagel in the last column.
[00:50:27] It's going to be great.
[00:50:28] But the biggest and most important thing, love God, love others and get in the game.
[00:50:34] Peace.
[00:50:36] Peace.
[00:50:36] Peace.
