Ever found yourself trying to hide something you did wrong? In this episode, we meet a man named Cain, who keeps doing one thing wrong after another. As it gets worse, he just tries to pretend like he hasn't done anything wrong. God can't be tricked, though. Find out what happens to him, and how we can do better as we explore Genesis chapter 4.

G', day, Dave here.
Speaker AWelcome to Stories of a Faithful God for Kids.
Speaker AHave you ever done something wrong and then tried to hide it?
Speaker AMaybe you made your brother or sister cry and then tried to calm them down so the grown ups wouldn't hear.
Speaker AYou don't want to get in trouble.
Speaker AOr maybe you went hunting for Christmas presents that were meant to be a surprise and when you found them, you covered them back up and made it look like you were never there.
Speaker AOr maybe you snuck up at night and ate some food from the fridge that didn't belong to you but never owned up to it.
Speaker AWhen we do the wrong thing, we're acting like we're in charge.
Speaker AI want to do it, so I'm going to do it.
Speaker AAnd it doesn't matter what anyone else, including God, says.
Speaker AThat's called sin.
Speaker AAnd we usually get pretty embarrassed if we're found out, and so we try to hide it.
Speaker AIn today's story, there's a man who tries to hide his sin and he finds out just how silly that is.
Speaker AI wonder if there could be a better way to deal with our sin.
Speaker AHmm.
Speaker AHow about we find out?
Speaker AGet ready for our next episode of Stories of a Faithful God for Kids.
Speaker AWhat a disaster.
Speaker AThe very first humans ever given life by God decided they could have life without God.
Speaker AThey thought they could do better than God in ruling the world.
Speaker AThey thought they didn't have to believe God when he said they'd die if they ate from one particular tree.
Speaker ABut they were wrong.
Speaker ANow they've been sent out of the garden God made to live in a world that's been cursed.
Speaker AThankfully, God is still very kind and he's going to let humans continue.
Speaker ARemember, even though the woman is going to have pain when she gives birth to children, she's still going to give birth.
Speaker ASo in Genesis 4:1 we read Adam had intimate relations with his wife, Eve.
Speaker AShe became pregnant and gave birth to Cain.
Speaker ANow, some people might say, ooh, that's lucky, you're pregnant.
Speaker ABut there's no such thing as luck.
Speaker AEve knows exactly why she's had a son.
Speaker AShe says, with the Lord's help, I have given birth to a man.
Speaker AIt's God who gives life.
Speaker AEve knows that the Lord God has given her this wonderful gift, even though she'd sinned.
Speaker AAfterwards, God gives her another son named Abel.
Speaker AWhen the boys grow up, they're both farmers, but different sorts of farmers.
Speaker AAbel looks after animals and Cain grows crops.
Speaker ANow one day, Abel, both the brothers decide to give an offering to God, a way of saying thanks to God for the good things he's given them.
Speaker ACain offers God some of the food that's grown out of the ground on his farm, and Abel offers some of the best meat from his animals.
Speaker AThey both make their offerings, but they each get a very different response from God.
Speaker AVerse 4 says the Lord accepted Abel and his gift, but God did not accept Cain and his gift.
Speaker ANow be very careful here.
Speaker AGod's response has nothing to do with the types of food the men offered.
Speaker AIt's not that meat is better than vegetables.
Speaker AYou can't use this Bible verse to say I don't have to eat my vegetables because God didn't accept Cain's offering.
Speaker AThat would be wrong and really annoying.
Speaker ANo, the issue is why each man wants to give something to God a lot later in the Bible, in Hebrews 11:4, we're told it was by faith that Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did.
Speaker AFaith is trust.
Speaker AAbel trusted God.
Speaker AHe loved God and knew God was good.
Speaker ACain didn't trust God and you can see that in how he reacts.
Speaker AIf he trusted God, he might say, oh please forgive me God and help me to do better next time.
Speaker ABuuut that isn't what he does.
Speaker AInstead, he gets really angry and grumpy.
Speaker AWon't accept my offering.
Speaker ADo you ever become grumpy when you don't get what you want?
Speaker AWhen you're grumpy, it's really easy to make things even worse because you're thinking more about yourself than anyone else.
Speaker AThankfully for Cain, God kindly reminds him to do what's good and says that he'll be really happy with him.
Speaker AThen he also reminds Cain that he's in real danger of doing something seriously bad.
Speaker AGod says to Cain in verse six, why are you angry?
Speaker AWhy do you look so unhappy?
Speaker AIf you do good, I will accept you.
Speaker ABut if you do not do good, sin is ready to attack you.
Speaker ASin wants you, but you must rule over it.
Speaker AYou see, the more you sin, the more you want to sin.
Speaker AIt's like it wants to trap you and grab you.
Speaker AAnd because Cain is so selfishly grumpy, it makes it really easy for him to sin more.
Speaker AUnfortunately, Cain doesn't listen to God's kind warning.
Speaker AHe lets sin win.
Speaker AHe takes Abel out into a field where he thinks no one's watching, and there he attacks and kills his brother.
Speaker AHow horribly sad.
Speaker AHumans only just started sinning and already one's become a murderer.
Speaker AIf only he'd listened to God.
Speaker ALater on, God asks Cain, where is your brother Abel?
Speaker AIt's not that God doesn't know.
Speaker AIt's a bit like when Adam hid in the garden after they ate the fruit and God asked him, where are you?
Speaker AGod's giving one chance to explain what's happened.
Speaker ABut Cain doesn't take the chance.
Speaker AInstead, he again tries to hide what he's done.
Speaker AIn verse nine, he answers, I don't know.
Speaker AIs it my job to take care of my brother?
Speaker ARemember, when you've started sinning, it's very easy to keep sinning.
Speaker ASo the grumpy killer is now lying straight to God, trying to hide his evil.
Speaker ABut nothing can be hidden from God.
Speaker AGod sees and knows everything.
Speaker ASo the Lord God says to cain in verse 10, what have you done?
Speaker AYour brother's blood is on the ground.
Speaker AThat blood is like a voice that tells me what happened.
Speaker AHow silly Cain's been to try and hide from God.
Speaker AJust like his parents tried to hide from God in the garden.
Speaker AAnd now, just like them, he has to face the consequences.
Speaker ACain's made his living by planting crops as a farmer, but now that's all about to change.
Speaker AGod says in verse 11, now you will be cursed in your work with the ground.
Speaker AIt is the same ground where your brother's blood fell.
Speaker AYour hands killed him.
Speaker AYou will work the ground, but it will not grow good crops for you anymore.
Speaker AYou will wander around on the earth.
Speaker ANow you might be thinking, oh, well, he can just buy food from the shops and maybe get a job selling fridges.
Speaker ABut remember, there are no shops, there are no real jobs.
Speaker AHe'll just have to find food growing wild as he wanders around.
Speaker AIf he tries to grow something himself, it won't work because God's cursed him.
Speaker AAnd it's not like he can just hang out with other people who grow things.
Speaker AOne, because there aren't many people yet, and two, because everyone will know that he's the wandering killer, and they will not be very keen to be friends.
Speaker AIn fact, in verse 13, Cain says to the Lord, this punishment is more than I can stand.
Speaker ALook, you forced me to stop working the ground and now I must hide from you.
Speaker AI will wander around on the earth and anyone who meets me can kill me.
Speaker AIsn't it funny that the thing he's most worried about is that now he'll have to hide from God?
Speaker AHe can't be around God anymore.
Speaker AHe knows that that means he'll be in danger and so people will try to kill him.
Speaker AHe didn't want to listen to God before when God warned him about the danger of sin.
Speaker ABut now he's scared of leaving God, which he has to do because he sinned.
Speaker AGod could just stop talking there and send him away.
Speaker ABut really kindly God says something else, something unexpected.
Speaker AEven though Cain doesn't deserve his kindness, God still shows him kindness anyway.
Speaker AIn verse 15, we're told, then the Lord said to Cain, no, if anyone kills you, I will punish that person seven times more.
Speaker AThen the Lord put a mark on Cain.
Speaker AIt was a warning to anyone who met him, not to kill him.
Speaker AThen Cain went away from the Lord.
Speaker ACain lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
Speaker ANod in the Bible language means wandering.
Speaker AHe had to go off wandering.
Speaker AMost importantly, he had to go away from the Lord, away from God, who's so kind and so loving, who can protect him and provide for him.
Speaker AAll because instead of listening to God, he decided to sin.
Speaker AAnd then he tried to hide his sin.
Speaker AIt can be embarrassing when we sin, can't it?
Speaker AWe much prefer to cover it up and hope no one notices.
Speaker ABut that doesn't help the situation.
Speaker AIn fact, it only makes it worse.
Speaker AIt's especially silly to try and hide from God because God sees and knows everything.
Speaker ASo if we feel grumpy and selfish when it's really easy to sin, what should we do?
Speaker AWe should pray and ask God for help.
Speaker AGod's awesomely powerful.
Speaker AHe can help us calm down and he can help us do what's right.
Speaker AIt doesn't have to be a fancy 10 minute prayer.
Speaker AIt can just be God, please help.
Speaker AI've prayed that lots of times.
Speaker AWhen you do sin though, don't try and cover it up.
Speaker ARemember, God's really, really, really kind and he says if you don't try to cover it up, but actually tell him what we've done.
Speaker AThe fancy word for that is confess.
Speaker AWhen you confess and ask for forgiveness and help to do better, he loves that.
Speaker AIn The Bible, in 1 John, chapter 1, verse 9, it says this.
Speaker AIf we say that we have no sin, we are fooling ourselves and the truth is not in us.
Speaker ABut if we confess our sins, he will forgive our sins.
Speaker AWe can trust God.
Speaker AHe does what is right.
Speaker AHe will make us clean from all the wrongs we have done.
Speaker AIt's such a good promise.
Speaker AGod isn't someone to hide from.
Speaker AHe's someone who we go to and ask for forgiveness and help to do better.
Speaker ABack near the start of the world, Adam and Eve's children start having families of their own.
Speaker AOne family wants to trust God and another family becomes really evil.
Speaker ABut that's a story for next.
Speaker AHi again everyone.
Speaker AA quick update.
Speaker AWe're getting close to 100 episodes.
Speaker ASo exciting.
Speaker ABut that does mean it's becoming harder to find episodes you want.
Speaker ASo on the website, I've now categorized all the episodes into their books of the Bible.
Speaker ASo if there's a book of the Bible you really want to hear about, maybe you haven't thought about it for a while or never thought about it, or you're doing it in church and want some extra input, it's now easier to find episodes.
Speaker AFor that, just go to faithfulgod.net, enter the stories of a Faithful God for Kids page and up the top you'll see episodes.
Speaker AWhen you hover over it, all the books of the Bible I've covered so far will appear as well as a couple of topics.
Speaker AJust click on the one you want while you're on the website.
Speaker AWould you also consider going to the donate page?
Speaker AIt would be really great if you see the value of this and my other podcasts to become a regular donor to support my ministry.
Speaker AI know there are lots of calls on the Christian dollar.
Speaker AI hope you see the value that this growing ministry brings all around the world.
Speaker ASo wherever you are in the world, please pray and consider becoming a donor.
Speaker AKeep trusting Jesus.
Speaker ABye for now.
