Speaker AA big shout out this week to Joe and Elijah.
Speaker AElijah asked a really great and important question about Noah.
Speaker AThanks for the question, Elijah.
Speaker AI hope my answer was helpful.
Speaker ANow on with the show.
Speaker AHave you ever had to wait a long time for something?
Speaker AAnd I mean a long time.
Speaker ALike maybe your mum or dad or your other grown ups said to you, one day I'm gonna teach you how to drive a car.
Speaker AAnd you're like, umm, I'm five years old and my feet don't even reach the pedals.
Speaker AAnd you wait while you're six and you're seven and eight and I suspect most of you are still waiting to learn to drive a car.
Speaker AOr maybe you found out your mum's pregnant and going to have a baby and you're really excited but you have to wait and wait and wait and you think about how you're going to have long conversations in the car with your brand new brother or sister and then they're finally born and you realise that all they seem to do is poo and wee and cry and sleep and you have to wait even longer before you can talk to them.
Speaker AOr maybe you know you're going to be taller one day and.
Speaker AAnd you wait and you wait and you wait and it just seems to take forever.
Speaker AIn today's episode, we're going to hear about people who knew that something or someone wonderful was coming.
Speaker ABut they had to wait and wait and wait.
Speaker ANow though, the wait is finally over.
Speaker AGet ready for episode 100 of Stories of a Faithful God for Kids.
Speaker AIn our last series, we heard about the beginning of the world.
Speaker AWe heard how humans messed everything up.
Speaker ABut also we heard about God's great plans to make things better.
Speaker AWell, now Matthew wants to tell us how God kept all his promises.
Speaker ATo do that.
Speaker AHe starts with these words in Matthew, chapter one, verse one.
Speaker AThis is the family history of Jesus Christ.
Speaker AHe came from the family of David.
Speaker ADavid came from the family of Abraham.
Speaker AThe two men named there David and Abraham were both told to wait.
Speaker AThey were promised amazing things by God.
Speaker ABut those things weren't going to happen immediately.
Speaker AYou might remember David from episodes 84 and 85 of Stories of a Faithful God for Kids.
Speaker AGod made David king of Israel, and then one day, he made David an amazing promise.
Speaker AIn 2 Samuel chapter 7, God promised David that one of the sons from his family would not only be king, but be a forever king.
Speaker AI suspect you can work out why kings aren't usually kings forever.
Speaker ABut this king from David's family would make a kingdom that would last forever.
Speaker AA kingdom with no danger.
Speaker AA kingdom of happiness and peace.
Speaker AAnd now Matthew's telling us that Jesus came from David's family.
Speaker ANot only that, he tells us that Jesus is the Christ.
Speaker AChrist isn't Jesus last name.
Speaker AIt's a word that means anointed one.
Speaker AYou anoint someone by pouring oil on their heads.
Speaker AThe kings of Israel were anointed.
Speaker AAnd now this Jesus, who's from King David's family is called Christ.
Speaker AHmm.
Speaker AThe other man, Abraham, we met in the last episode, although at that stage his name was just Abram.
Speaker AGod changed it to Abraham.
Speaker ALater on, you might remember that God promised Abraham that his family would grow really big, they'd be blessed, and the whole world would be blessed through them.
Speaker AWell, now Jesus is here from Abraham's family, ready to bless the whole world.
Speaker ARight at the beginning of Matthew's gospel, Matthew's telling us that all the waiting, the waiting that's happened for about 2,000 years since the time of Abraham, the waiting that's happened for about a thousand years since the time of David, well, the waiting is over.
Speaker AAfter telling us that in the very first sentence, Matthew then tells us how the family got from Abraham to Jesus.
Speaker AHe does it by listing the names of lots of people in the family.
Speaker ASo for example, in verse two, he says, Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac was the father of Jacob, Jacob was the father of Judah and his brothers.
Speaker AAs he lists the names, he's actually telling us a story, the story of the whole Old Testament.
Speaker AFor example, those three men, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, had to wait.
Speaker AGod kept promising them things that were coming in the future.
Speaker ABut so many of those things weren't going to happen in their lifetime.
Speaker AThings like owning the land of Canaan.
Speaker ABy the time Jacob died, he only owned one small field in Canaan, and his family had moved out of Canaan down to Egypt.
Speaker ABut don't worry, more was coming.
Speaker AAs you hear some of the names, you think, ooo, he was really bad.
Speaker ALike Judah in verse three, we're told Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah.
Speaker ATheir mother was Tamar.
Speaker AWe haven't covered that story on the podcast yet, but let me tell you, Judah treated Tamar really, really badly.
Speaker AIt shows that the sin that was in the rest of the world was also in Abraham's family.
Speaker ASo how are they going to bless the world?
Speaker ADon't worry, A saviour is coming.
Speaker AAs the list goes on, there are some women in the family tree who actually aren't originally from Abraham's family.
Speaker AThere's a lady named Rahab who we haven't talked about yet on the podcast, and Ruth, who we have.
Speaker ANeither of those women would have been expected to have the blessings that Israel had from God.
Speaker AAnd yet God brought them into Abraham's family to be blessed.
Speaker AIt's a reminder that God was going to bless not just the Israelites who are Abraham's family, but also the whole world.
Speaker AOf course, that's only two women.
Speaker AIt's not very many.
Speaker ADon't worry though.
Speaker AThe blessing to the world is coming.
Speaker AFinally, we get down to King David.
Speaker AUnder King David, it seemed like lots of the blessings promised to Abraham were coming true.
Speaker AThe Israelites were in the land God had promised to give them.
Speaker AThere were lots of Israelites, just like God promised.
Speaker AAnd God also gave them a new promise, how one of David's children would be the forever king.
Speaker AIt seemed like under King David, things were finally coming together.
Speaker AMatthew reminds us, though there were still major problems.
Speaker AListen to what he tells us in verse 6.
Speaker ADavid was the father of Solomon.
Speaker ASolomon's mother had been Uriah's wife.
Speaker ACan you hear the problem?
Speaker ASolomon's dad was King David.
Speaker AHis mum was Uriah's wife, not David's wife.
Speaker AUriah's wife.
Speaker ADavid had actually stolen Uriah's wife and had Uriah killed.
Speaker AThat is not what you'd expect from the king of God's people.
Speaker ADon't worry though.
Speaker AA better king is coming.
Speaker AThe next 14 names on the list are all kings of Israel.
Speaker AWith each one, people could wonder, is this going to be the forever king?
Speaker AIs this going to be the forever king?
Speaker AIs he going to be the one who finally brings a blessing to the whole world?
Speaker ABut each time, the answer was no.
Speaker ASometimes they were pretty good kings, trusting God and trying to do what he wanted.
Speaker ABut then they died.
Speaker AOther times, the kings were really awful.
Speaker AThey ignored God and did things their own way.
Speaker AIn fact, things got worse and worse until finally God punished his people by sending them out of the land into the land of Babylon.
Speaker AIt felt like all of God's promises had failed.
Speaker AIsrael didn't have any kings anymore.
Speaker AThey weren't in the land anymore.
Speaker AInstead of being a blessing to the world, the world was defeating them.
Speaker ADon't worry, though.
Speaker AGod's going to do something amazing.
Speaker AGod brought the people back from Babylon, but now they were just a tiny country.
Speaker AThey had no kings, they had far less people.
Speaker AAnd it seemed like all the blessings were gone.
Speaker AKing David's family was still around, but they became less and less famous.
Speaker ALet me read you their names from verse 12 and you see if you recognise any of them.
Speaker AJehoiachin was the father of Shealtiel.
Speaker AShealtiel was the grandfather of Zerubbabel.
Speaker AZerubbabel was the father of Abiud.
Speaker AAbiud was the father of Eliakim.
Speaker AEliakim was the father of Azor.
Speaker AAzor was the father of Zadok.
Speaker AZadok was the father of Achim.
Speaker AAchim was the father of Eliud.
Speaker AEliud was the father of Eleazar.
Speaker AEleazar was the father of Matthan.
Speaker AMatthan was the father of Jacob.
Speaker AJacob was the father of Joseph.
Speaker AJoseph was the husband of Mary.
Speaker AHmm.
Speaker AJoseph and Mary.
Speaker AJoseph and Mary.
Speaker AI feel like I've heard those names before.
Speaker AWere they a great king and queen?
Speaker ANo, no, that's not it.
Speaker AWere they really famous prophets from the Old Testament?
Speaker ANo, that's not it either.
Speaker AThey just seem like unimportant people.
Speaker AIn fact, the only time I usually hear the names of Joseph and Mary are around Christmas time.
Speaker AOf course, all I needed to do was read the next part of the verse.
Speaker AIt says Jacob was the father of Joseph, Joseph was the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus.
Speaker AJesus is called the Christ.
Speaker AHow good is that?
Speaker ABecause in Jesus, all of God's promises were going to come true.
Speaker AThrough Jesus, the whole world was going to be blessed.
Speaker AThrough Jesus, God would make a huge people for himself.
Speaker AIn Jesus, we meet the forever king who will never die again, who's made a kingdom that'll last forever.
Speaker AA kingdom where people listen to God, where they're ruled by God and not by sin.
Speaker AThe perfect kingdom.
Speaker AIn Jesus, God has faithfully kept all his wonderful promises.
Speaker ABut how has he done that?
Speaker AHow does Jesus fulfil every single promise?
Speaker AAnd how will other people react to Jesus arriving?
Speaker AWell, that's a story for next time.
Speaker AHi everyone.
Speaker AThanks for listening to episode 100.
Speaker AOh, I'm so excited.
Speaker AHey, there are lots of people who still don't know about the podcast.
Speaker AIf you're enjoying it, please.
Speaker AIt would be great if you could tell people, tell your friends, tell people at church.
Speaker AMaybe you could make an announcement at church about stories of a faithful God for kids.
Speaker AAlso, if you leave a review on your listening platform, that helps other people to find the podcast and to listen to the podcast.
Speaker ASo it'd be great if you could do that.
Speaker AThanks, everyone.
Speaker AKeep trusting Jesus.
Speaker ABye for now.
