[00:01:34] found you, I'm like, bro, this is a diamond in the rough right here. We got some ministry going on,

[00:01:39] bro. So, just give everybody a little background. How did SBG come to be?

[00:01:44] Man, it's so crazy, bro. It's so wild. Like, Justin, you know, I was talking with Justin from

[00:01:48] Rapzilla the other day, man. He said the same thing, you know, kind of the same words. It's like, man,

[00:01:52] you're not heavenly present. But when I found you, it's like, yo, man, I think it's one of those things

[00:01:57] to come out when it's your time to come out. But to see how SBG came to be, man, it's wild.

[00:02:03] You know, when the Lord came and when I was really coming out of the world and God directed

[00:02:08] me to my ministry, to the church where I'm at now, Faith City Church under Dwight Butler,

[00:02:12] Bishop Dwight Butler, the Lord began to purge me and take me through a period of isolation

[00:02:16] and really transformation and that discipleship, man, like we mentioned a few minutes ago.

[00:02:21] But one day is wild, bro. You know, I've always, back before TikTok, you know,

[00:02:25] I was posting little encouragement videos on Facebook, you know, just to, that's what I feel

[00:02:29] like the Lord has given me a gift of encouragement. I just wanted people to know that you can be better.

[00:02:33] Like, you ain't got to accept mediocrity and stay where you at. I would post these videos,

[00:02:37] but one day, man, my wife and I was speaking at, it's wild. We were speaking one night before we

[00:02:42] went to sleep was on Saturday and she saw a video of her cousin on TikTok and didn't even know what

[00:02:46] TikTok was at the time, but he'd went viral. She's like, she just said right before we went to sleep,

[00:02:50] she's like, you need to get on TikTok, do your music, do something. It's wild. The next morning,

[00:02:54] bro, we was at church and at the end of church, man, there's always an altar call. And I came to

[00:02:58] the altar, my, my, my bishop, he's 60 years old. He don't know nothing really about social media,

[00:03:02] you know, but he said, man, he said, the Lord is saying, he said, get on TikTok. He said,

[00:03:06] the Lord is saying, get on TikTok. What? Yeah. So at that moment I was like, okay,

[00:03:09] God, he's, I don't know. Look, the Lord is just saying, get on TikTok, do some videos.

[00:03:12] So I did it, man. I did it for about a year. I was posting my music consistently,

[00:03:15] steadily. Didn't have any knowledge, you know, nobody knew of SBG. Nobody knew of James at all. And,

[00:03:20] but I was doing these videos about a year in, I had a video, an encouragement video

[00:03:23] popping and went viral. And, um, I think it gained like 40, 50,000 followers. And then from

[00:03:28] then on, I was just steady with it. And I was mixing in between. I never thought about doing

[00:03:32] the encouragement, like really mixing it. I was really started doing the, uh, the music. But,

[00:03:36] um, when I started doing like two, two, two, three times a week, I would do the music, man.

[00:03:40] People started catching on like, yo, you do music too. So you were doing encouragement first,

[00:03:43] just dropping like encouragement clips. Exactly. Gotcha. So the thing of it was like,

[00:03:47] when he told me to get on, when he said, get on TikTok and, um, do your music,

[00:03:51] do music or something of that nature, I started doing it, but my nature, just like from Facebook

[00:03:55] was like, I'm about to encourage somebody. If I ain't just about to throw music on you,

[00:03:58] like you can get it through my music too. But I'm about to get on here too, for the people that

[00:04:01] might not never listen to it. And I had a video and it's just how God will work. And I had a video,

[00:04:05] an encouragement video pop. And then from then I was like, okay, I knew it was time to go hard

[00:04:09] with the encouragement as well. So I would, I did a little regimen of, um, the music mixing in with

[00:04:14] well. And, uh, you know, when eventually I think about two years later, uh, another video

[00:04:18] popped and then a music video that I'd hit on deep waters, it went crazy the night that I dropped

[00:04:22] it. And, uh, it's been the history. So what, what, when was that approximately you started

[00:04:27] the TikTok thing? The TikTok, man, that was back in 2021, 21. So during the pandemic. Yeah.

[00:04:33] Pandemic. During the pandemic. Okay. Okay. Interesting. And so what, what led you to Christ?

[00:04:39] What was the moment, man? What was that transformational moment for you? Yeah. So, um,

[00:04:43] man, I grew up in a Christian household, you know, um, grew up, you know, going to the Baptist

[00:04:46] church, praise God. And I always believed in God. My parents always believed in God.

[00:04:50] My parents loved the Lord. You know what I'm saying? I saw some, some different stuff. Um,

[00:04:53] you know, a lot of times we can be in church on Sunday and then it's a different lifestyle

[00:04:57] like so many people are. And I saw a lot of this different stuff, but parents that loved

[00:05:01] the Lord and led me in and always had me in church, you know? So when I was at eight

[00:05:04] years old, I was led to, to get baptized and get my life through. Didn't know what it meant.

[00:05:08] Right. But I went under the water and from eight to, from 10, 11, 12 to 23, I lived a hellish

[00:05:15] life. I call it the dark decade. Yeah. It was, it was crazy. But, um, the Lord met me. I was at

[00:05:19] Avery university. I just got out of, um, cause I had went to, um, straight out of high school. I

[00:05:23] went to, I depped into the, uh, Marine Corps. Gotcha. Yeah, absolutely. So thank you for service,

[00:05:28] bro. Absolutely, man. Um, but I, when I got out of there, cause I had some scholarships to play ball,

[00:05:32] but I lost pretty much majority of them the last, my senior year, because I started doing,

[00:05:36] I didn't start doing, but I really picked up doing drugs and hanging with the wrong crowd.

[00:05:40] That's where really made the decision. Like, I'm gonna go to the Marine Corps. You know what I'm saying?

[00:05:43] When I got out, I was young cause I depped in at 17. So I got out, I was about to turn 20,

[00:05:47] uh, 21. Yeah. So I was like, man, I'm gonna go walk on. I walked on Avery university and, um,

[00:05:50] and made the scene, but I tore my meniscus in training camp. And it was just like, man,

[00:05:55] everything that I thought I saw the light, it went dark, you know? And, uh, man,

[00:05:58] I really dove into some stuff, but that same year, the Lord just met me right there in my room.

[00:06:03] And, um, I never really read the Bible too much. I never did too much, but the Lord,

[00:06:06] like the spirit was leading me to get in the word, even though I didn't know what it meant.

[00:06:09] And I had all these scriptures up on my, on my wall and all that. And it just threw a

[00:06:13] process from there. It wasn't even like a here today and I'm changed tomorrow. I had this

[00:06:16] revelation, but over a period of time and the Lord, uh, he ended up leaving. I left Avery that

[00:06:20] year. And, um, it was just, the Lord was slowly, but surely, you know, isolating me from those who,

[00:06:26] the P the peer group that I was around and leading me, uh, to, to where he called me to.

[00:06:30] What was it like right afterwards telling your parents, I finally give it to the Lord?

[00:06:36] You know, absolutely. The craziest thing brother is, uh, man, I tell, uh, just a very,

[00:06:43] a piece of this thing, man. Um, cause what really was the, the concluding mark was now I was in some

[00:06:49] really bad stuff, man. I was at drugs and just did the whole nine, just picture the whole nine

[00:06:53] with, with, with some of these boys. It was on the same team with me as a matter of fact. And, uh,

[00:06:56] you know, right before, um, it was, uh, it's Thanksgiving break. We was about to go on

[00:07:01] Thanksgiving break and I was about to go with them. And, um, we was going to do the same

[00:07:03] stuff that we always did ended up, I had an encounter at that the day before my, in my dorm

[00:07:08] room and I was doing, I was heavily on Coke, man. It's time. Oh, wow. Yeah. Absolutely.

[00:07:12] Heavily, bro. Especially since I tore my meniscus, I'd stopped for a little while. But then once that

[00:07:17] happened, I really dove back into it, man. I was, I mean, I was all day long that day in the Lord,

[00:07:22] man, I had an encounter at, at, in my room, my room filled with smoke, man. And, um, man,

[00:07:26] I saw that it was just a lot of demonic presence and the Lord was showing me a couple of things.

[00:07:30] I decided to go home cause I called my dad, you know, um, I was truly scared. I ain't gonna lie

[00:07:34] to you. I was scared. I didn't know what was happening that same day. The next day I called

[00:07:38] and heard the three friends that I was supposed to go with, I would have been driving. We're in

[00:07:42] jail to, you know, uh, it was, it was robbery, a couple of different things. It was off the Zans.

[00:07:47] I was off the Zans the whole time too. So I knew I would have been with them driving the car.

[00:07:51] And, um, one of them got two years, the other got three, the other got five. And I saw at that

[00:07:55] moment what the Lord was doing. And, um, my parents saw it too. And it was crazy, man. Cause my

[00:08:00] parents, like they had known this portion of me. They like, they knew who I was. Right. So to answer

[00:08:05] your question, to see it, I think at first, like my dad was excited. My dad was excited. Cause he was,

[00:08:10] like I said, he was a pastor. He's a minister. And, um, my mom, she, cause she knew what I was doing,

[00:08:14] but she, it's kind of like a praise God. But at the same time, like, is it, I don't know what to

[00:08:19] think about it. So that's kind of how it was with the parents. Wow. Wow. So, okay. So you start the Tik TOK

[00:08:25] thing, you're doing encouraging messages. And then were you already producing songs and whatnot

[00:08:29] anyway, or didn't that, that kicked in? Yeah, no. So I hadn't released anything

[00:08:33] professionally at all. Okay. Yeah, absolutely. Now I was, I've always wrapped is the thing. Like

[00:08:37] you hear so many people say, I've always wrapped. Wasn't for the Lord. Right. 2017, man. When, uh,

[00:08:41] when the Lord is so crazy, it was, yeah, it was in 2017 as well. That same year that, um,

[00:08:46] that when I came home, as a matter of a month later and I had a conversation in the car with my dad,

[00:08:50] I was like, you know, what do you think the Lord? Cause I was really trying to seek him at this point.

[00:08:53] What do you think the Lord would, uh, you know, think about me just doing this music. And then

[00:08:56] I was trying to get around. I was like, well, once I get it big, then I'll go ahead and turn.

[00:09:00] I'll tell you what I'm saying. Yeah, exactly. Let me get some volume.

[00:09:02] Then I'll convert. Then I'm going to give and I'm going to do this song.

[00:09:04] Like I'm saying, but, um, I hadn't released anything. My first song was, uh, my first,

[00:09:09] actually the first, my debut single was, was in 2022. Okay. Wow. Yeah. I mean, that's,

[00:09:14] that's recent, man. Yeah, absolutely. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. So, you know,

[00:09:19] as you go through this and you start to get into this a little bit, how do you,

[00:09:24] how do you bump into Christian hip hop as a, as a genre, so to speak? What was your first

[00:09:29] introduction? And it's so crazy, brother. It's like, like I was mentioning, man, I, uh,

[00:09:33] and I hadn't, I didn't know when the Lord said, cause the Lord met me right there and he was like,

[00:09:37] those that you've been rapping, you've been rapping for the world. You've been giving to the world,

[00:09:40] but you didn't know that I gave you that gift and now you're going to use it for me.

[00:09:43] So when he said that, I was just thinking that I was going to start incorporating God into my raps.

[00:09:46] I didn't know that there was this whole scene of Christian. I didn't know nothing about it.

[00:09:50] Right. Hadn't heard of Lecrae. Hadn't, that's crazy. You know what I'm saying?

[00:09:52] Hadn't heard of Lecrae. Hadn't heard of any of them. This is 2022. 2022. Yeah. Wow, man.

[00:09:56] I was never in that crowd. You know what I'm saying? I'm in the, the, the trap rap, all types of stuff.

[00:10:00] So when I heard, when, when I got, I think Lecrae might've been the first one that I heard of.

[00:10:05] Um, but then it's wild brother. Um, I saw a video of, um, on YouTube of, uh, uh,

[00:10:10] I think it was a rapzilla video of Zanty's God taught me or something in the nation.

[00:10:13] I was like, yo, this brother talking about,

[00:10:15] hold on, he talking about some of the same stuff. I'm talking about that.

[00:10:17] I dove into it and I found it like went down a rabbit hole in Christian rap.

[00:10:20] You know what I'm saying? Now I'm like, there's a whole group of people.

[00:10:22] So you tripped into it because you weren't searching for it.

[00:10:25] Not at all.

[00:10:26] So what, like, did you happen to do a Google search for like positive rap or something?

[00:10:29] Like, I'm just curious, like, how'd you finally bump into it?

[00:10:32] What happened in the algorithm that it put in front of you?

[00:10:34] Man, I think it was like you said, man, the providence of God brother.

[00:10:37] Cause I wasn't searching. I wasn't searching for the only thing I was searching music.

[00:10:41] Cause I was still heavily listening to, to secular rap. Right.

[00:10:45] I was like, I had never, I was a couple of years,

[00:10:47] I probably a year off of, um, yeah, anything with Christian rap.

[00:10:50] But, um, I think literally I was just searching beasts and, uh,

[00:10:53] something came, rapzilla somehow that video got,

[00:10:56] it came up. And from there, that's when I went down the rabbit hole of,

[00:10:59] I'm looking at other, his videos.

[00:11:00] And then I see rapzilla and then I'm like, Oh, rapzilla.

[00:11:03] And then they're featuring these other artists. I'm like, right.

[00:11:04] All these artists talking about God.

[00:11:06] You know how, you know, what's so amazing about what you're saying?

[00:11:10] Cause some people, I think you, you're one of two types of people.

[00:11:13] You see the glass half empty, the glass half full. I'm half full all day.

[00:11:16] Like I'm, I'm probably too optimistic. My wife would say,

[00:11:20] I think we could do anything, but I, here's the thing.

[00:11:23] Just two years ago, if you think about it,

[00:11:26] there was nothing in front of you presenting to you repeatedly what you were

[00:11:31] seeking for because you were seeking for, but you hadn't typed it.

[00:11:34] Yeah. Excuse me. And so to me, it just shows how much opportunity we have.

[00:11:37] Sometimes we feel like we've moved so much further ahead,

[00:11:40] but actually we should be thinking about, wow,

[00:11:43] there are so many impressionable minds out there that have not been exposed to

[00:11:48] this. Absolutely. I mean, when you just think, I mean, just two years ago,

[00:11:51] I mean, bro, the crate was popping. KB was popping. No big deal was popping.

[00:11:57] Zonti was popping. I mean, if you go through the list of the top 20,

[00:12:00] we would look at the numbers and we would probably all be impressed by the

[00:12:03] stream numbers and whatnot. But yet there were how many more James's or SBG's

[00:12:09] out there who were at a state of, I'm not sure what I'm looking for,

[00:12:13] but I know I'm missing something, bro.

[00:12:16] 100%.

[00:12:16] Too, too much opportunity. There's so much opportunity.

[00:12:19] So much, bro.

[00:12:20] And you know what? I want to add this to it. When we,

[00:12:22] when we do this sometimes in the community,

[00:12:24] and I think this happens in every industry where you feel like you've got to

[00:12:28] like muscle in for room, bro, there's plenty of room.

[00:12:30] Come on. There is plenty room. No one has to worry about any,

[00:12:34] you don't have to worry about your lane or this,

[00:12:37] this, that, and that. If somebody's going to box you out of being on tour,

[00:12:40] we got too much opportunity to worry about it.

[00:12:59] because at the time that I started doing the Christian rap,

[00:13:01] I was listening to secular music.

[00:13:03] I didn't even know that the Lord was just calling me into this,

[00:13:05] but he was calling me into changing what is going into my ear gates.

[00:13:08] There's a whole group of people that need to hear what you say.

[00:13:11] Whole group of people.

[00:13:11] Absolutely.

[00:13:12] So you find Zonti, you're like,

[00:13:14] this brother seems to be talking about God.

[00:13:16] What do you do after that?

[00:13:18] Man, I start writing.

[00:13:19] I'm trying to tell you.

[00:13:20] At the time I was writing, man, I get in the little pad.

[00:13:23] I'm writing. I'm writing. I'm writing, brother.

[00:13:24] At the time, like I said, what I would do at that point is because I'm still,

[00:13:27] my mind is still on the prophet, on the prophetic word of Tik TOK.

[00:13:31] So I'm not thinking about, I don't know nothing about the music industry.

[00:13:34] I've always rapped, but when I say rapped,

[00:13:36] literally just freestyled and wrote raps in a little rap book.

[00:13:39] So I'm writing these little,

[00:13:40] probably 45 to 60 seconds,

[00:13:42] little freestyle raps and doing them on Tik TOK.

[00:13:46] So you don't do full songs.

[00:13:48] You're doing a verse here, there.

[00:13:49] Yep. Absolutely.

[00:13:51] Oh, you go back for my Tik TOK and it's all.

[00:13:56] So you build an audience based on versus.

[00:14:29] I feel like he told me probably about six months prior,

[00:14:31] but I was still iffy and I was still,

[00:14:33] I saw what was working and I,

[00:14:35] I was kind of just kind of laser focused on that.

[00:14:37] But then the Lord pushed me into a,

[00:14:39] so I began to just research and I didn't know nothing about distribution and

[00:14:42] all this.

[00:14:42] And I was like,

[00:14:43] man,

[00:14:43] how do,

[00:14:43] how do people even get their songs on Spotify?

[00:14:45] So I began to,

[00:14:46] uh,

[00:14:46] man,

[00:14:47] research stuff.

[00:14:48] And I was like,

[00:14:48] okay.

[00:14:48] So that's when I got plugged in with distro kid.

[00:14:50] And I was like,

[00:14:50] man,

[00:14:50] I got me a count real quick.

[00:14:51] I was like,

[00:14:51] I got everything I need now.

[00:14:53] All I got to do is,

[00:14:54] how'd you even know to go to distro kid and whatnot?

[00:15:19] I'm typing in like,

[00:15:20] how did,

[00:15:21] how do you get your music on such and such?

[00:15:23] And,

[00:15:23] and coming to find,

[00:15:24] like I said,

[00:15:24] and that led me to video after video.

[00:15:25] And I'm finding,

[00:15:26] I'm seeing different avenues,

[00:15:27] but then I'm going and I'm like,

[00:15:29] okay,

[00:15:29] I feel like at the time this was the best for me.

[00:15:31] So that's why I copy.

[00:15:32] That man said YouTube university.

[00:15:33] YouTube university.

[00:15:36] if someone were to describe you,
