[00:00:29] What's up everybody, it's your girl Lish Feex and welcome back to another episode of my podcast. I'll just let myself in.

[00:00:55] It's the podcast where we don't wait for an imaginary permission slip or some seat at an imaginary table. We let ourselves into our God-given doors. And on this podcast, I love to broach topics, talk about topics, encourage you with topics that I feel like people who are like me need. Entrepreneurs, people who are of the faith-based community, people who want to just make a difference in the world, right?

[00:01:18] People who want to inspire others. And there's been some things on my heart that I really have been learning, growing through, wrestling with myself. And I thought that it might help a few of you. You know, there is an oxymoron that exists within the Christian culture and within our faith that I really think needs to be addressed.

[00:01:45] Now, I'm going to try to address it with a lot of love. I'm going to try to address it with a lot of truth. I am going to attempt to address it in a way that I believe will convict us to change, but also help us see how deeply God loves us and is fighting for us.

[00:02:05] The oxymoron is the powerless Christian. Yeah, the powerless Christian, the person who believes and tries their best every day to live.

[00:02:17] The person who believes and lives in a powerless way. You know, this is an oxymoron because the words powerless and Christian have no business being next to each other. It's like the words bitter and sweet, right? You really can't be both, really.

[00:02:43] You know, something can feel bittersweet, but something can't be both bitter and sweet. And so in studying this out, I've come to the conclusion that you can feel like a powerless Christian, but you cannot actually be a powerless Christian. And, you know, I was trying to get my notes together for this and I realized we're going to have to do two parts. I'm just going to tell you right now, this is going to be part one of us attacking the oxymoron of the powerless Christian.

[00:03:12] You know, I've been in ministry for most of my adult life, full time paid ministry, working at one church or the other for most of my adult life. In the times where I was not paid ministry, I was still in some form of leadership. I never been nowhere and just sat down. I'm attempting to do that right now in Jesus name. We're going to see how long that lasts.

[00:03:38] I have always been in some form of mentorship, leadership, help in any church I've ever been a part of. And in that time, as you would assume, I've done a lot of counseling. I've done a lot of listening. I've been in a lot of difficult talks. I've been in rooms that I wish I didn't have to be in. I've seen marriages and beautiful relationships.

[00:04:06] I've seen breakups and divorce. I've seen people struggle in their finances. I've seen people struggle in their addictions and all sorts of patterns of life. And one of the things that I think is so common and prevalent that really shouldn't be is that people really don't believe that they have the power to overcome their circumstance.

[00:04:34] Most people don't really believe that they have the power to overcome a specific sin. Most people don't really believe that they can turn their marriage around. And the truth is, they're right if they're relying on their own power. But if we serve a God who is all powerful, why are so many Christians struggling to believe that they have the power to live the way he's called us to live?

[00:05:02] That they have even the power to live the way they want to live, right? Forget the calling, right? The calling is high. Just the way you want to live. In joy, in peace, in abundance, in health. So many Christians that I encounter feel powerless and live as if they are powerless. As if life just is going to happen to them and whatever comes at them is going to come and they'll pray and hopefully God will come through.

[00:05:27] And to be honest, there are not very many things that grieve my heart more than this. Because there is a deep sorrow in many Christians because their lives don't look the way that they believe that they would look, want them to look, or even believe God had for them to look.

[00:05:49] And instead of the attack that we can have on this happening, a lot of us just succumb to depression, anxiety, worry, fear. All things we're going to talk about today in this podcast. And it's really not the way that God wants us to live. So we're going to talk a bit about how we have gotten here. We're also going to look at some signs, right? If you don't know whether or not you're behaving like a powerless Christian, I'm going to give you a couple of signs.

[00:06:17] And we're just going to talk through, you know, how we can start to attack this in our lives. Because the truth is, I believe if we as believers got on one accord with our faith, there are so many ways that we could change this world. All we have to do is truly believe. You know, as I was talking about earlier, I've been, I would say blessed to. Some days I want to say burdened to.

[00:06:46] But I've been blessed to be in full-time ministry a good amount of my adult life. And that came with a lot of listening. And as I said, you know, a lot of times, more often than not, people would come and sit with me, whether it be individual, couples, friends. And the overall sentiment was so faithless. And I'm going to use words that are biblical, right? You might say sad. I'm going to say faithless, right?

[00:07:14] There's a difference, but they cousins. They cousins. They usually come together. They twins maybe, right? And some of the things were truly sad, right? How a person gets to divorce, sad. How a person gets hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt, it is truly sad. People dealing with loss, death, you know, hurt feelings. Some things are just sad.

[00:07:40] You can't, you know, there's no discipling or encouraging your way out of a parent losing a child or a person losing their spouse. There's just no way, right? But then there are other things that people really have the power and ability to fight for and fight through and change. And they just don't see themselves the way that God sees them. They don't see themselves as a person who can become a better spouse. They don't see themselves as a person who can handle money better.

[00:08:09] They don't see themselves as a person who can be disciplined in their health. I'm going to talk about that one for myself. They don't see themselves as a person who could be married one day, although they've been single way longer than they wanted to be. They don't see themselves as a person who could be married again after a divorce or losing a spouse. A lot of the powerlessness that people have walked in over the years for me has come from us not seeing ourselves properly. And, you know, this is not a co-winky dink. It's not a coincidence, right?

[00:08:39] We have an enemy whose desire is to convince us that what God says about us is not true. That's his whole thing. He wants to convince you that what God says about you is not true, that what God has promised you is not real, and that God cannot do anything for you that you don't see him doing.

[00:09:02] He wants to convince you that there is a logic to life that you should understand. And if things are not going according to your understanding, then they're not going to work. If things are not going according to your timeline, then they're not going to work. This is his whole thing. And the powerless Christian, the oxymoron of the powerless Christian, the Christian who is behaving as if they're powerless, spends too much time listening to the liar.

[00:09:31] You know, one of my favorite scriptures about the enemy, because I have favorite scriptures about the devil, right? And that may sound weird to you. That may sound like, girl, what do you mean favorite scriptures about the devil? I have favorite scriptures about the devil because I need to remind myself that I'm not dealing with somebody who's on an even playing field to my God. I got to remind myself of that because sometime after weeks and weeks or days and days of you hearing accusatory things about yourself,

[00:09:57] about the people you love, you start to think that he's on the same playing field as the Lord. You know, after things not going right, time after time after time, you not getting what you want time after time after time, you start to think that he's on the same playing field as the Lord. So I got scriptures that I use to remind me that he's not on the same playing field. One of them is in Revelations 12, 12 that says,

[00:10:23] Therefore rejoice, you heavens, you who dwell in them, but woe to the earth and sea, because the devil has gone down to you. He is filled with fury because he knows his time is short. The devil is upset. But he's very mad because he knows he only has a certain amount of time to get you to doubt the power of the father. And so he's not playing around.

[00:10:53] He's not, you know, waiting and taking his time. You ever see somebody, you might be this person. You ever see somebody when they know their time is short and they got a lot to do, right? They're not kind about it. They might be short tempered. They might be moving fast. They might be rude. They're not sensitive. They're not compassionate. They are in a hurry because they know their time is short.

[00:11:18] They might be filled with fury, especially if you catch them at an airport, because they know their time is short. That is how the devil operates. But he's not saying, oh, well, you know what? She just had a baby. Let me take it easy on her. Oh, you know what? He just became a Christian. So let me give him some time to settle in. No, no. He's filled with fury because his time is short and that's how he's operating. And so he is going straight for your insecurities.

[00:11:47] Straight for your insecurities. Straight for your doubts. Straight for your fears. Straight for the things that keep you up at night. He's going straight for those things because he wants to make you doubt the power of God. He wants to make you not just doubt the power of God. He wants to make you forfeit the power of God by disobeying him so that the consequences that you have to reap, because you have to have consequences to your sin, outweigh what you see God doing for you.

[00:12:15] We don't need to look any further than the garden to see this. We don't need to look any further than the garden. You know, I always tell people the devil is busy, but he's not creative. Mm-hmm. He's not creative. He does the same stuff. What did he do in the garden? Convince Eve that what God said wasn't really what God said.

[00:12:37] And then here we are living out the consequences of said sin because that's the way sin works. He wants to stop you from relying on God because he knows God is your power source. You know, when I'm setting up for the podcast, there are several different things we use. We got every gidget and gadget and everything you can think of for a podcast up in this house. And our cameras come with batteries.

[00:13:06] And you can charge those batteries outside of the camera. But we also have batteries that you can plug into the wall, put them in the camera, and have a continuous stream of power. So this means that every 30 minutes or 40 minutes or an hour, however long the battery will last, I don't have to worry about changing the battery or starting over or switching out the battery to start over. I have filmed podcasts with cameras that don't have that battery, right, with people who didn't have that option.

[00:13:35] And we could be in the middle of a good, good, good, good thing. And all of a sudden we got to go stop. Okay, wait, don't forget what you were saying. We got to change out the battery. And, you know, although that's fine, it can get in the way of the flow. The devil's desire is that you don't plug in to the everlasting power of God. But his desire is that you go to church and you get a little bit of power and you feel good. And then you go, I got to stop. We got to refuel the battery. I'm not feeling it anymore. So I need another church service.

[00:14:05] I need another conference. I need another worship night. I need another prayer night. When God's desire is that we are consistently connected and in the flow with him. I have news for you. You should not need a worship team to put something in A flat. You should not need a preacher to hoop and holler. You should not need somebody to exegete. You should not need a podcast. You should not need a scripture of the day to make you feel the power of God.

[00:14:32] His power is outside of all that, outside of all space and time. But the devil works very hard so that after you get that little power source, you feel depleted again in a matter of an hour. I'm telling you guys, this is something that if we could get a hold on it, I'm saying we because I'm with y'all. We could truly change our lives and change the world.

[00:15:00] One of my favorite scriptures to combat this for myself is in 2 Timothy 1 verse 7. You guys know this scripture. It says, God has not given us a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power, love, and of a sound mind. I love this scripture. I love every part. I love the spirit of power. I love the spirit of love. And I love the spirit of a sound mind. And I've had each of those things. I have counseled plenty of women through each of those things.

[00:15:28] And I think that we can skip over the spirit of power because we don't really understand it. We go, God has given us a spirit of love. We need to be loving. And God has given us a spirit of a sound mind. And, you know, we need to make good decisions. And God has given us a spirit that we can do good things for him. And we kind of can skip over the power because we don't really investigate what that power actually means in our lives. Day to day.

[00:15:56] Power to do what? Power to make what happen, right? We don't even really study that out the way that we need to. And I love this scripture because it reminds me that God just did not just give me, you know, a sound mind and love, but that he gave me true power, meaning that I can overcome things quickly. I can change things. I can shift a room. I can move an atmosphere. He has given me that power.

[00:16:25] But we struggle to believe this. And even more so, we struggle to walk in it. We struggle to behave this way. And, you know, we're not alone. We're not alone. The brothers that came before us, the 12 disciples that came before us, they struggled the same way. You know, I got a shout out to Dr. Darius Daniels. I was listening to a sermon of his the other day and it was entitled, I'm Tidy, y'all. You got to go check that sermon out on YouTube. Change Church in Atlanta. He preached this sermon.

[00:16:53] And he referenced this passage of scripture. And I was like, oh my goodness, that's exactly what I've been studying out. And it just threw me. We're going to look at it together. It's in Matthew 10. And we'll start in Matthew 10 rather. And I love this passage of scripture or the way that this story goes because it just reminds me so much of us. I love when I can look in the Bible and I can see things that remind me of myself, right?

[00:17:19] Things that let me know, listen, girl, you know, you a mess, but you ain't alone. And your spiritual forefathers struggled the same way and they overcame. So you'll overcome too. So let's look at Matthew 10. I love this. It says, he called his 12 disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and healed every disease and sickness. That's Matthew 10 verse 1. And the Bible says some really specific words there, right?

[00:17:49] It says he called them to him, right? So they were called. Then it says he gave them authority. He gave them the authority to drive out in pure spirits and heal every disease and sickness. Jesus gave them power, gave them authority, set them up to when he gave them everything they needed to do what he was calling them to do.

[00:18:16] But if you look a few chapters forward in Matthew 17 and verse 14, the Bible says, When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him. Lord have mercy on my son, he said. He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him. Oh, unbelieving and perverse generation, Jesus replied.

[00:18:45] How long shall I stay with you? How long should I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me. Jesus rebuked the demon and he came out of the boy and he was healed from that moment. Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, Why couldn't we drive it out? He replied, Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth that if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain,

[00:19:15] Move from here to there and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. Let me tell you something. I love this. I love this passage of scripture. Because we always talk about having faith of a mustard seed and saying to a mountain it can move and all these things, but we don't look at the story that came before that moment.

[00:19:43] Jesus had already given them power, but they were struggling to walk it out. They were struggling. And what does he say to them? He says, It is because you have so little faith. When they asked him, Why couldn't we do it? He didn't say, Oh, it's because you need more of this or more of that, or you need to go to church more, or because you don't have a prayer partner, or because you haven't fasted, which is in other scripture, or because you have... He says, It's because you have so little faith.

[00:20:11] Why does Jesus get exasperated with these people? This, He says, You unbelieving, perverse generation. It's the lack of faith that stops us from being able to walk in the power that God has already given us. You know, there's nothing worse than somebody asking you for something you already gave them. It's like you give somebody money for something and they're like, Hey, are you going to buy me? Are you going to buy me? Are you going to pay for it? It's like, I already gave you the money. What,

[00:20:41] what other proof do you need? You have the money. It's right there. I think about Jesus looking at the disciples like that in this moment. Like, just bring me the boy. I'll do it. I'll take care of it. And you know, Dr. Darius Daniels' sermon about this was so good. It was funny, you know, because it talked about, you know, how Jesus was fully human and fully divine and, you know, how he probably was a little exasperated and exhausted. But when we don't walk in our power, we place things on God to do that we're supposed to be doing.

[00:21:12] We, we, we, we, we, we got gospel songs. Say you got a light bill due and you got a gas bill too. Telephone disconnect waiting on your next paycheck. You know, in this day and age, that's probably truer than it's been in a long time. But ask yourself, has God given you the power, the provision,

[00:21:38] the vision to make that not be the case? So many times we are sitting around and praying for the miracle and the miracle is in your hand. God already told you what to do. He told you about the business to start. He told you the idea to go after. He told you what to do. But because we feel powerless and we lack faith, we struggle to walk in that power. Listen, I'm not saying not to pray.

[00:22:06] If you got a light bill due and a gas bill too and telephone disconnect waiting on your next paycheck. I'm not saying don't pray. I'm not saying don't, don't reach out to people for help that that's in your community. I'm not saying any of that, but do that and what God has called you to do. Faith and deeds, right? It has to work together. And I believe that there are some things that need to be healed in our lives, in our family, in our community,

[00:22:36] that we have the power to heal. And God is having to take over and stop something else that he's doing to do that. The beautiful thing is that he's all powerful and he can do it. But I believe that some of his exasperation and frustration with the disciples in that moment was because this was something that they can do. You know, I've had to fight for faith in so many areas of my life. I've had to fight for faith in my finances at times.

[00:23:05] I've had to fight for faith in relationships at times. I've had to fight for faith in the church itself. Faith, faith in the institution of the church. Is this really what God planned? Is this where I need to be? I've had to fight for my faith in the word. Is this really the written word of God? What if this stuff is not true? I've had to fight intensely, and I'm still fighting, for the faith that I can be powerful and overcome my health issues. You know,

[00:23:34] I don't talk about this a whole lot, but I have struggled with my weight for my entire life. I have never been a small person. And I had a period where I lost a good amount of weight in my 20s, and I gained it all back. And that has been a devastating blow to my faith that I'm a person that can actually have power over my health and my temple. You know,

[00:24:02] I've had to fight for years, and I'm still fighting and working and doing the right thing, even when I don't see results and all that stuff, and going to doctors and checking on this and that and all the stuff. Because I don't want to feel powerless over this part of my life. You know, I'll tell you, the devil will tempt me sometimes. You know what? Just eat what you want to eat. It doesn't matter anyway. Just do what you want to do. It doesn't matter anyway. Listen, you already got the husband.

[00:24:32] Don't trip. He loves you. Don't worry about it. But you know, I have to remind myself that my health is about God. It's about a surrender to the person that God has called me. To be honest, it's about being around to do the things he's called me to do. I cannot become who he's called me to be if I ain't here. And I do not want to leave this earth prematurely because I couldn't stop eating.

[00:25:02] I'm just being, I'm being super vulnerable with you guys now. Like, this is stuff that I only talk to my best friends about. You know, like, I don't want to leave this earth prematurely because I couldn't stop eating sugar or whatever thing that's, that contributes to, you know, having an issue losing weight. These are things that I have had to confess. Things that I've struggled with. You know, I've struggled in the area of powerlessness in relationships at times, especially when I was single. Do I even believe that this can happen for me?

[00:25:31] Do I even trust that God will bless me this way? Fighting over feelings of jealousy and frustration. I've talked about this at length on my Instagram and I'll continue to talk about it because the single ladies continue to ask. And you know, I'm going to deliver when y'all ask, but I had to struggle to believe that God was good enough to bless me in all the ways he had already blessed me and blessed me with that desire of my heart.

[00:25:54] I am fighting every day to believe that I have the spirit of power to become exactly who God has called me to be. And you have to fight too. There are a few things that I believe we need to contend with, think about and really come to terms with to determine whether or not we are living or behaving like a powerless Christian.

[00:26:21] So I'm going to give you a list of a few of those things and we'll talk about them a bit briefly. And then we'll talk a little bit about what we're going to go into for part two. But there's a couple of signs that you need to pay attention to that'll help you know if you're living in a powerless way. The first one, and these are in no particular order of importance, but the first sign that came to my mind was this. You worry all the time. You are full of worry, full of anxiety. You worry about everything. You worry about what's going on today.

[00:26:51] You worry about what's going to happen tomorrow. You even think about situations from the past and it brings up a sense of anxiety about how that was handled. You worry constantly and it's robbing you of your faith. The second sign is that you fear the future more than you experience the present. You live in a constant state of fear about what could happen,

[00:27:18] about what you believe and have convinced yourself will happen, about how you're going to handle it if it does happen. You live in a constant state of fear. It's a sign that you might be behaving like a powerless Christian. The third sign is that you believe in the goodness of God, but only as it relates to other people. And child, I used to be here. I have broken out of this in Jesus name, but I used to be here.

[00:27:48] I believe deep down that God would bless other people. I believe deep down that other people could repent of their sins. I believe deep down that other people's lives could change drastically if they follow what God told them to do. But if I was honest with myself, there were parts of me that did not believe the same was true for me. I believed in the goodness of God deep down, but the truth was I only believed in it as it related to other people.

[00:28:18] Fourth sign. And this one might step on a few toes, but I got to, I got to share it how the Lord gave it to me. You believe that certain moves of God were only for biblical times. Yeah. Let me, let me speak to my people who go to churches that are very teacher based, that don't really operate in deeper spiritual matters, that maybe don't believe in certain signs and wonders, right?

[00:28:46] That's not the lean of your church. You have this struggle the most. Yeah. You have this struggle the most. I know because that was my background for many, many years. And the truth of the matter is you don't believe that the things the Lord of the Bible did are possible in your life. How do I know? You don't follow what the Bible says about certain things. You know, people get sick and the Bible says, if there's a sick among you, the elders should come and lay hands.

[00:29:14] There are Christians who don't believe that makes a difference. I'm telling you, I know many of them. Some of y'all who come from that type of background, who come from a background that is deep in the prophetic, that come from a background who believes in this stuff. You can't even believe that. But I'm telling you right now, there are whole groups of Christians who do not believe this stuff really deep down. They believe it worked in the Bible, but now someone gets sick. They don't believe we should call the elders and lay hands. They don't,

[00:29:43] they don't see that that makes a difference. You know, there is a part of the majesty and the mystery of Christ that whole groups of Christians are missing out on because to them, that's just for Bible times. That's a whole nother conversation, but that is a sign that you might be living or behaving like a powerless Christian. And the fifth and final sign that I'll share, there's tons of signs, but the fifth and final sign that I'll share is that it has been years or maybe even decades

[00:30:12] since you have personally experienced a move of God in your life, in your heart, or in your mind. You might be living or walking out a powerless version of Christianity, a powerless version of your relationship with God. If it's been years or decades since you've personally experienced a move of God in your life, a spirit of power moves and it doesn't even have to be some big crazy thing. Oh God,

[00:30:42] bless me with a million dollars. It can be, I used to really think this way. And after deep prayer, after time in my secret place, after deep Bible study, after fasting, I no longer think this way. I no longer have this struggle. I no longer live in this way. If you have not experienced that in years, you might be living or behaving as a powerless Christian.

[00:31:08] You might be living in an oxymoronic way because the powerless Christian should not exist. Listen, I know some of these things are not easy to hear. Some of these things are not fun. Some of these things may be deep and you may not completely understand them, especially if you're new to the faith. But the truth is this. If you are living this way, you are 1000% missing out on the John 10, 10 abundant life. God has promised you. The Bible says,

[00:31:37] Jesus came so that we may have life and have it to the full or have it more abundantly. If you are living in a way that's that, that, that even kind of looks like any of the five things I just talked about, you're not experiencing the John 10, 10 life. You're not experiencing it in your marriage. That's been struggling for years and years. You're not experiencing it in your body that you're trying to get together for years and years. You're not experiencing it in your relationships that you're trying to,

[00:32:06] to move the needle on or praying for God to make a move. And you're not experiencing it. You're not experiencing it in a church that you, that you really see vision for, but it's having a hard time growing and changing with the times. If you are not living in the spirit of power that God has given us, according to the book of second Timothy, I can guarantee you're not having life to the full. And that's not what God wants for you.

[00:32:32] The good news is that the Bible is full of scriptures, full, full, full of scriptures to help us to live a powerful life, full of scriptures to help us to have faith, full of scriptures to help to remind us who the God we serve actually is and what he escaped. And full of scriptures to remind us that the devil is a liar and he has no power over our lives, except the power that we give him. I'm excited because in part two, which we'll do next week,

[00:33:00] I'm going to speak all about solutions, right? Today was a little bit heavy. We talked about, you know, what contributes to us living this oxymoronic lifestyle of a powerless Christian or powerless believer. But next week, we're going to talk in deep detail about how we can overcome this issue. I believe that somebody is going to be delivered. Someone is going to be set free. Someone is going to come out of a space of fear,

[00:33:30] doubt, and worry, and go into a space of faith, belief, belief, and confidence in what God is able to do with and through them. You know, I always desire in this podcast for people to be moved to action, right? You're going to hear me say that at some point in every episode. I don't want you to just listen to this or just watch this and feel good, right? Because then, like I talked about earlier, you're going to need another hit. And as much as I want you to come back, I want you to come back for encouragement,

[00:33:57] not because you need it to understand or feel closer to God. And so my desire is that this will move you to action. I want to encourage you, go get in your Bible between this episode and next episode and figure out where you need to grow in your faith. Go back and listen to, if you weren't taking notes, the five signs I gave you. Figure out which one or ones, if you're like me, because at different points, I have struggled with all five of those things. Which ones resonate with you? Which ones you can relate to?

[00:34:26] And start studying out how you can overcome those things so that when you come back next week, and you hear some of these solutions I'm going to give, you can go, oh yeah, I already, yeah, I'm already working on that. You know, and that you can share this with somebody. I want to encourage you all to share this podcast with someone in your life who you see vision for, who you believe God is going to bless, but you know that they don't see it. You know they're struggling to believe it.

[00:34:53] I want you to share this podcast with someone who needs to know that they have been given a spirit of power. I hope that you enjoyed this episode. I hope you come back for part two next week. If you're listening on Holy Culture, channel 140 at 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on a Monday night on SiriusXM, we thank you so much for listening there.
