[00:00:00] Have a good night! Playing as a presentation of Hobson Media. It's not just another day, it's 2-day. This is the Church Pew Sports podcast featuring a group of pastors delivering bombastic takes on sports, life and faith. It likes drinks or hate or hate or tosses. Take a knee.
[00:00:32] You got barbecue back there and did it, Vite me. Heard my feelings. Lendon Ear. These are some of the best questions I can to have to tell you that straight up. What is that special? As the Church Pew Sports podcast begins...
[00:00:47] It's funny how one man's terrible is another man's pure joy. And man next thing is somebody that gets to heaven! Two-day! All right, we got to move on. We got now. Well that's true and it's good to have you with us now.
[00:01:01] Thanks for listening to Church Pew Sports Bill Hobson here alongside Paul Miller. It is the summertime and we've been going in many, many different directions. And so Paul, you and I have not sat in the same room for well over a month. Maybe even longer.
[00:01:16] I haven't really marked the time but it's good to see in person. It is good. It took me a few minutes here just to remember that I like you. Are you still working for us? After playing the open and hearing all the martial arts.
[00:01:28] I'm almost like a martial arts. Did that take you back to a bad dark place? It just reminded me it's a love hate thing. Let's see in person and good to talk sports life and faith with all of you.
[00:01:39] Thanks for being with us during what we would refer to as the summer dead period for the most part. Unless you're a diehard baseball fan and you love regular season baseball. This is kind of that time where there's not a whole lot going on,
[00:01:54] except for the ramp up to the Olympics and in my world the world of golf never really ends. But we still have a lot to talk about, believe it or not, because the sports world never stops turning.
[00:02:06] Yeah, it's nonstop content producing world and I'm really excited about our guests. We have with us tonight can I go ahead and introduce? Yeah, I was going to say I don't know if because of his place in the professional world of ministry
[00:02:22] if I need to go change and put on a tie. Just got to sit up straight. I guess you got to be very much sit up straight. Can I be tardy? Can I be tardy? This is absolutely that. Right.
[00:02:33] I want to introduce all of you to my friend George Hillman, George and I go way back. You told me it was doctor. It is doctor George Hillman. Do that again. It will make you just use the doctor. Thank you. I get nervous around doctors and many sorts.
[00:02:47] Yeah. George and I go way back to my time down in Dallas. We were at church together. We served together. George is the vice president for education.
[00:02:58] At Dallas, theological seminary and from your little bio on the website, George, it says that you oversee all seminary activities related to academic fair affairs and student life. So I'm thinking if you're responsible for everything education wise, academic wise and student life.
[00:03:18] What else is there that DPS does? Let me, you probably don't have to raise money, right? Yeah, I don't have to raise money and I don't need to build things. But outside that, yeah, so it'd be similar to like a nurse school like a pro goes to.
[00:03:30] So if students faculty are curriculum and I kind of joke people, I'm the air traffic controller. That's what I have amazing team and you know, we have our main campus in Dallas, but Even kind of think of us now is even though we say Dallas, theological seminary.
[00:03:45] Only one third of our students live in Dallas, Texas. So we have campuses in Atlanta, Washington, DC, Houston, about a third of our students live at one of our sites. And then we've got our 600 students there kind of are online only students and they're all over the country.
[00:04:03] And so we kind of joke, you know, when Kentucky fried chicken went to KFC. So our branding is DTS. So it's DTS Dallas, DTS Houston, DTS DC because we're much bigger than just ballas. Yeah, I've been there 22 years. Paul, do you believe that? I would know that's crazy.
[00:04:24] Yeah, yeah, I've never known you outside a DTS and for all of you pastors that are listening, You know how you have to have those guys in your life that when you're when you're church or your ministry or
[00:04:35] your calling just gets a little catty won't pass you need to. You need to have someone that you can call that you can trust that you can talk to and say help me sort through this or that George has been one of those guys for me.
[00:04:49] For yeah, we've been there a lot. Yes, we have you know from doing it almost basically a church plant and the hall and chairs in every Sunday at elementary school all the way. Yeah, so this is what we're saying before we got online kids have grown up together.
[00:05:04] Paul's daughter's been on mission trips with me. So I'll goodness yes. Is there anybody who has been in ministry for I don't know 20 plus years who doesn't have enough stories to tell to fill a book because it's a never ending never boring career path. But it really is.
[00:05:24] And in for 10 years before I ever did this, I think college in single ministry and you know so I was right now far topic for this evening.
[00:05:34] I was almost seven years, I was at the University of Georgia working with college students at UGA so work with college students at TCU at A&M and then.
[00:05:44] UGA University Georgia and then came to the church that Paul went out with both at and that was the college and singles pastor there in the ballerys area. So you notice he's never been out of the SEC. Yes, what are TCU? Very little bit. That is very true.
[00:05:59] I'm going to say that you have to stay within the SEC boundaries and as I'll see boundaries get larger. Well yeah, we're coming down to just two conferences anyways it's good. Yeah, it's going to end on your life.
[00:06:10] So you've got the Texas A&M logo on your hat. Should we read anything into that other than somebody give you a hat? No, you should read in that that my blood flows deep maroon.
[00:06:25] Class of 90 my wife and I both graduated from A&M and so yeah it's my passion. I love Texas A&M and love college sports, you know love college sports but yeah that's my home team.
[00:06:36] Well we're going to get into some of that in a few moments especially from the A&M baseball perspective but before we get to that point we've got a kind of a wide array of topics to cover because it's the summer dead period and the Olympics are almost here but not quite.
[00:06:53] Only our friend Scott Holmgren is really excited that baseball's the only show in town. The rest of us are like okay, wake us up when we get to October and yet Paul the headlines never disappoint in the world of sports.
[00:07:05] There's always enough to talk about from you know a little bit of everything this time we were talking tennis golf football NIL Olympics. We've got a pretty good menu put together for today.
[00:07:18] I like just this week in the summer dead period right like there's been so many stories where I'm like did that guy really say what I think he just said.
[00:07:31] I gotta ask the guys about that on the podcast and see you know it's been it's been interesting why don't we start with the biggest did that guy say what I think he just said and do that with coach.
[00:07:43] Okay why don't you set this one up for us okay this is my gundy the revered coach at Oklahoma State right.
[00:07:51] I see this sweatshirt you have on as well yes my son's alma mater and I see Paul in that sweatshirt every time more than any other article of clothing and so I don't know if this is going to be a difficult story for you to get into because it's not a great look for for the Cowboys.
[00:08:07] No, it's not it's not a good look for coach Dundee I called my son Jake because Jake is a huge Mike Gundy fan and knows him personally has been to his house and all this other stuff but.
[00:08:16] The story is that they're they're all American running back I'll go and got a DUI. And so they asked Mike Gundy why he thought like it was okay to not only not punish him but kind of.
[00:08:29] Exonerate him with his comments and it's it's really interesting that he chose to address it the way he did in the media. So I looked it up on my phone what would be the legal limit like in Oklahoma's point 08 and all he was.
[00:08:48] And I was based on body weight not to get into the legal side of it but I thought really two or three beers or four I'm not just fine with all I did I'm telling you what decision I made.
[00:09:03] Well, I thought I probably done that a thousand times in my life and and I was just fine so I got lucky people get lucky.
[00:09:11] Okay, yeah George I'll let you start off on this one what was that all about this was the topic this morning I have a guys Bible study and we were talking about that this morning of just.
[00:09:22] It's one of these things of even if you think get in your head that's not something you sell. Oh, yeah.
[00:09:30] He's talking about I mean Gundy speaks his mind I mean that and that's always been you know he always is going to speak his mind but yeah that just is not inappropriate thing.
[00:09:40] The same especially with you know the impressionable young man that he's trying to mentor and mature. Paul in the unlikely scenario that coach Gundy is listening to church pew sports.
[00:09:54] Let's do a little role play here right I'm going to ask the question and then you can be coach Gundy and what he should have said okay that coach we got interesting news coming from your program and the young man with the DUI does that concern you at all.
[00:10:08] Well it doesn't concern me based on the fact that when I do the science and we don't want to get into the science but when I do the science.
[00:10:16] And you know it's based on body weight and everything else but and we're not going to talk about the fact that Ali Gordon is only 20 years old so his legal limit is not 0.
[00:10:24] That's his legal limit for driving and we're not going to talk about the fact that you know we've all done it we've all had a couple beers and then got behind the wheel of a car.
[00:10:34] And we're not going to talk about the fact that we're in big trouble if Ali's not carrying rock for us starting with game one.
[00:10:41] We're just going to leave all those things to decide and I'm going to tell you guys I've earned enough credit here at Oklahoma State University. I can do whatever I want.
[00:10:49] All right so George let me now you give the right answer I'll be the reporter I'll toss it to you again. Mike we have a concerning report concerning one of your star players are you at all disappointed in Ali Gordon and his decisions that he's.
[00:11:03] Decisions that he's made recently again what I would say is I expect all of my guys all my young men to do better and I think it's a lesson that we can all learn from and grow from and you know these are young men and our you know these are.
[00:11:21] You know players that were maturing in the young man and so you know there's forgiveness but we want to become better something. I don't know who just he not do that.
[00:11:31] Yeah I know he's an interesting character he's a little bit like Casey Stangle used to be or like if you watched Colombo and the weird things he would say in a courtroom. Well, I don't say this as well.
[00:11:42] Gundy I mean he is loved at worship at Oklahoma State. Yeah maybe that's he could do anything and and the alumni the the fan base there.
[00:11:55] Gundy can do no wrong and I'm sure sports sports news and still waters is spinning this one way or the other but again.
[00:12:03] But when the one the smart thing say so you think he further cemented his legacy while the rest of the country is rolling its eyes and saying what do get a filter or have somebody right you know worked workshop this before you go in front of the cameras.
[00:12:17] Right yeah. It's not really a good narrative to talk about okay so while we're talking about fun narratives. We've got to go to Wimbledon and and Yokevich who is an incredible an incredible player. His goat status almost right he really is.
[00:12:36] And during the height of covid he was actually barred from. And I had a benwemble that I can't remember where what tournament it was a major because he didn't meet that country's vaccination status requirements and all that.
[00:12:50] So he's still on the nervous edge of crowd interaction and he always has been he's kind of I kind of compare him to the land beer of tennis.
[00:13:01] I'm just because I'm a piston spanned and land beer never cared what people thought and I don't really think Yokevich really cares that much either. Or it doesn't matter because if he didn't care what he said anything true that's the question.
[00:13:19] That's a good point so here he is on the court in England following a match. And to all those people that have chosen to disrespect the player in this case me have a good night. Good night, good.
[00:13:52] I'm hoping that they were just commenting on Runa and that they weren't disrespecting you. They were. They were. They were. I don't accept it. No no no. I know there were I know they were changing for Runa, but that's an excuse to also boo. I listen.
[00:14:08] I've been I've been on the tour for more than 20 years so trust me. I know all the tricks. I know how it works. It's fine. It's fine. It's okay. I focus on a respectful people that have respect that pay the ticket to come and watch tonight.
[00:14:23] He's got the crowd. He just dists the crowd and he still has the crowd. He's also got John Macon row on his side.
[00:14:30] What would you say to him now? Well done. He's been battling this for his whole career and yes, he feeds off negative energy. Yes, I did feed off that at times, but I hated it in a way.
[00:14:42] Do you want people yelling against you? You know, hoping you'll lose and just because you're so good. They start pulling for the other guy for no reason other than you're so good.
[00:14:54] Of course, John Mac would embrace that. So question for you in the gentile where all white, a peril world of Wimbledon and its grass courts where they've actually turned down a lot of advertising money because they don't want the ostentatious logos and what they have there.
[00:15:14] It's kind of similar in a way to the masters in that regard where they don't need your sponsorship. They're doing just fine. What side of all of this do you come down on with Joker and the crowd kind of being predetermined to to give him some resberries?
[00:15:36] I would probably land on Joker vitches side because I grew up in Chicago and I've had a sports fan career worth of watching Michael Jordan create Slates from the crowd, from opponents and everything else just to motivate himself. And I kind of think that's what he's doing here.
[00:15:56] So I would be squarely in Joker vitches corn. Are you a tennis guy? George? You know, I'm not a tennis guy but again, I've been watching this thing as well. And I'm a poll of just you know, I think it brings some excitement to the game of tennis.
[00:16:10] Yeah. Again, we're talking about tennis right now. We normally would even talk about tennis. The days of Mac realm and Connor, man. That's fun stuff.
[00:16:20] Yeah. You know, it's funny. Some athletes embrace the villain role. Even if they're not really villains. I mean, I guess you can make a case that
[00:16:29] Yoke vitch or Joker vitch, however you want to say it, that he has intentionally rub the tennis industry the wrong way because he's kind of Brash on the court and they do look down on it because of the decision he made regarding the vaccination.
[00:16:43] I mean, you can you can spin it any other way you want to but that's part of the story. And I think he gets fueled by it all. Yeah, he definitely does and I'm okay with that. I think it's great.
[00:16:56] I'm a Georgia. I think it makes it makes a relatively boring sport. Interesting. It's kind of like the live golf thing makes golf way more interesting for me. Well, sorry. I don't want you to put that on the red. Oh, oh, wait. It makes an interesting how.
[00:17:13] Because you're not watching it. There's no way. No, I'm not watching it. But there's something there's something to pay attention to and there's something to read on ESPN.com.
[00:17:21] And I am watching the clips to see. And it was laughing my head off when Mac and Rowe came out squarely in his corner, so like George said, It makes it. It gives you a reason to think about and talk about tennis.
[00:17:32] Yeah, we don't have many other conversations about tennis. No, I wouldn't have to go to another hand. He count the number of tennis players I even know playing right now. Me either.
[00:17:43] I was, you know what we were, we were open in the upper peninsula for a couple days at our place around the forest. And so there was some tennis on and I expected to turn it on and see some names that I was familiar with.
[00:17:56] I don't know why because I haven't really been locked in. Yeah, I did the number one seated player. No idea who that was. And I don't know where joke of it was seated, but it wasn't number one which kind of surprised me, but you're right.
[00:18:09] It's kind of a conversation because we have time to talk about it kind of conversation. But he is sort of the champion villain of that sport. I mean, it's a combination of champion slash villain and in a world where everybody's kind of picking sides,
[00:18:27] I kind of like the guy. He stood by his guns and he hasn't really backed down from any of it. Well, that doesn't every sport need a villain. Yes. Yeah, that's why we had Lenin beer. In Texas from a cowboy's, are you cowboy's fans? Oh, yes.
[00:18:47] He's a cowboy's fan. So that team is like if they were good, they'd be the ones. Oh, absolutely. And they play the part in Jerry Jones. Yeah. Absolutely eats it up. But the cowboys are all about Jerry Jones number one first and foremost.
[00:19:03] Jones and the Jones family and if they win some games, he's a business man who is making a kill. And he's making a kill. And on the number one show on Netflix right now is the House Talboy's cheerleader, mint eight heart mini. Yeah, that's not Jerry Jones.
[00:19:18] Jerry Jones can make some money. Yeah. He can sell stuff and he can make some money. Yeah. Yeah. I came home the other night and Bobby was watching that Netflix series. And I'm like, oh, like, really? Minimum in my house have watched it even my mother-in-law.
[00:19:31] Everybody is watching. So I want you. Yeah. So I want you to ask this question of your spouses when you go home. Okay. Start with when I walked home, when I walked in a couple nights ago, you were watching the Dallas Cup or cheerleader series.
[00:19:46] If you had walked in and I had been watching it, what would have been the counter? What would have been the counter? Yeah. How would it have been a very, would have been a very different counter? I think that's a fair question.
[00:19:57] But I'd rather have you guys have it. Yeah. We'll do that. So I'm on it. Okay. So let's go to college football here for a moment. There has been kind of in the dead period of sports headlines.
[00:20:10] There has been a remarkable announcement by the wealthiest donor, probably in all college football. That being Phil Knight of Nike fame and his school, The Ducks of Oregon. And he is essentially, well, no, he has literally announced that they have a checkbook.
[00:20:30] They now have unlimited, and I, I'll money at their disposal. And it's changing some commits. Yeah. I think your book eyes have had a couple of experience. Yeah. Ohio State has lost three, five star players, recruits that were crystal ball to a Ohio State in the whole deal.
[00:20:52] And then in the 11th hour, Phil Knight comes in with checkbook and all three of them are now going to Oregon. And two of the three have just come flat out and said, I just went to the highest bidder. Wow. So what do you do with that?
[00:21:04] I mean, like I'm in Ohio State fans, so I'm a little ticked about it. And I'm really looking forward to an Ohio State plays Oregon. But I'm curious how that plays in SEC country when the headline like that pops because the SEC is not short on the cash.
[00:21:21] Especially in AM has a little history by and they're recruiting class if I could say that so bold. You can say that pretty boldness. Yes, so George does that concern you as a pattern that might develop because the last time I checked
[00:21:35] in the state of Texas, there were some people of means who if they took a liking to a program could help reshape it. Well, again, I mean, you look at everything with that, what again, my mother with Johnny Manzell and the whole Jimbo Fisher. Yeah.
[00:21:51] It's been insane about what's been happening at AM for the last 14 years or so ever since they made the jump to the SEC and we're talking huge money. And you know, think what 80 million dollar renovation of the baseball stadium is getting ready to happen.
[00:22:07] You know, those types of things and it's sad as a sports fan. And again, I know you all talked about this in other episodes as well, but the coaches are for hire, the kids are for hire.
[00:22:18] And I mean, I'm passionate about my school because I'm passionate about my school and I want those players to be passionate about the same thing that I'm passionate about. And it's a job for them. They're murderers. Yeah, they're almost like hard mercenaries.
[00:22:33] It's a job for them in the same thing for coaches. And I will get to the thing later with baseball and you know, with slash nager and think of it. And it's just, you know, he got a better offer. And that happens to other people all the time.
[00:22:45] You work for one company and you get an offer someplace else in their opinion more and you would tell anybody else, well, yeah, go do this. The challenges with this with all this NIL money is I wouldn't know what to do with that money as an 18 year old.
[00:23:00] No. And we're talking huge money. And you know, again, Phil Knight for, you know, for decades has been feeding the Oregon thing. The real interesting thing with Oregon is, wire to this, all their games have been late night.
[00:23:18] Well, now with the new conference alignment, you're now going to start seeing Oregon games during earlier prime time. And I think that's been the one thing. I think for all the West Coast, you know, the, you know, packet night, you know, they tried to really pitch it.
[00:23:33] But when you're starting your games at 11 o'clock at night, yes, fan two, you're not watching those games. One of the pastors that are church, he's a huge, Washington Husky's fan grew up in there. Huge Washington Husky's fan and he'll, we'll see him on Sunday morning.
[00:23:48] He said to say, until two in the morning, watching the Husky's playing. Yeah. Well, again, if you've got Oregon now that's now playing on CBS or ABC and they're now the three o'clock game on Saturday afternoon, there's going to be a lot more eyeballs watching Oregon.
[00:24:03] So it's going to be, it's going to be interesting to see what happens with that. But the money's in, the money's in St. Martin. Yeah. The money is just absolutely insane right now. And, you know, alumni are going to continue to, you know, pay it. Yeah.
[00:24:16] You know, in Texas, you've got oil money and oil money is going to keep feeling this thing. Okay. So as an Aggie, do you, in hindsight, do you wish the Jimbo Fisher experiment had never happened? Oh, man. That one hurt. So I mean, at the time,
[00:24:34] seriously, at the time he was the best thing on the market and I really think every Aggie to their heart said, this is the Savior. This is the final piece. The final piece that's going to push us over. You know, we had the man's L.
[00:24:50] And we had the man's L. But this was going to be the push that was going to get us over. And everybody was all in. Let's go. Yeah. And six years later and however much the payout was,
[00:25:00] so the irony of all this was I was at Jimbo's last game. So last year, Mississippi State, last game of the year. So I kind of told people how to go down there and help right my check to sign up. You know, to pay him off.
[00:25:13] But here's the thing for the Aggie faithful. So Mike Elco, we're all let's go. I mean, we're all I mean, great higher everybody's in again. And whether we think or not, he's a New Jersey guy, but at least they ain't in faith for like, oh yeah, man.
[00:25:31] He's one of ours and he's drunk the cool aid of Aggie football and stuff like that. So we'll see what happens. But yeah, in hindsight, we were priced still down. We were priced still down again. Because I think there's some Aggies that would say,
[00:25:47] you know, the COVID year, the shortened football COVID year when they had Kellon Mawn, they went to the Orange Bowl. Everybody thought and that's when Jimbo got the extension. Because everybody thought, man, we're just if we'd had a full season.
[00:26:01] If we'd had a full season, we could have done it. We could fight compete, you know, if I peaked with Bama and all those types of things. So are we at the points where we can stop pretending that
[00:26:13] kids are amateur athletes when they're being moved from the school that they committed to another one, literally for the NIO money. When Phil Knight announces unlimited and he's not kidding, he certainly can have it basically unlimited. What's to motivate a young player to go to class?
[00:26:37] If they really believe in our abilities, they're probably thinking, well, I'll be in school for two years at the most anyways. I might as well just go cash, Charleston. And when he says unlimited, there's no salary, cap and college. There's no accountability for it.
[00:26:49] You can pop around from school to school. Are we done pretending that we're actually college sports as opposed to a minor league? Yeah, it's club. I mean, you know, I know Paul's then the whole soccer thing with his youngest son and things like this.
[00:27:05] Work or clubs for now. You know, you almost get into the thing of, you know, do you have, you know, tier one tier two just like having Premier League? But that's how we're functioning now. We're functioning as club sports. Yeah, absolutely.
[00:27:20] And with revenue sharing on the horizon, assuming that the courts ratify the decisions that have been made. Can you imagine the amount of lobbying taking place right now in the dark and halls of Congress for things that sports fans are oblivious to because if the
[00:27:36] system gets upended, then all of those NIL dollars that are being dangled in front of kids. Now they have to enter a new angle for all of this. It's not just Phil Knight saying I've got all the money in the world.
[00:27:50] And by the way, art, I know we've had this conversation before. Are these kids understanding the concept of taxes and of responsibility? Sure, hope so. When I was 18, and I'd like to think that my parents gave me a good healthy perspective on stuff, on wealth, and on money.
[00:28:12] And I kind of, I still would not have known how to handle the new Lannister Gini and $600,000 a year at the age of 18. Now in a bottle, a lot of pizza. Yeah, yeah, interesting times. I'll say, yes, I'll say.
[00:28:27] Do you want to jump to our, we have a kind of a special surprise guest joining us here for a couple minutes under the umbrella of Holy Discontent. So I think, and then George can weigh in on your Holy Discontent and our new guest can weigh in.
[00:28:41] All right, here we go. It's time to blow off some steam. Get it off your chest, rent about what's most bothering you. I got a lot of problems with you people. Now you're going to hear about it. It's time for Holy Discontent.
[00:28:59] We have a new addition to the program here for a few moments. Yes, Dave Boramah is joining us on church pew sports. Those of you that are from the EFCA world. No, Dave Boramah as the director of apex missions. How are you, brother? I'm doing great.
[00:29:16] How are you guys? Do a well, man. I'll go ahead. Yeah, well, Dave, we've never, we've never met before, but back when I was playing, if I came late to practice, I'd have to run laps.
[00:29:26] So do you want to just get up and run a few laps this, you know, you're 29 minutes in. I think that probably some push-ups and laps. I don't know, George, what are you normally assigned to students who relate for class at Dallas?
[00:29:36] I think it's a 10 point deduction to start off with. All right, so he's 10 points starting 10 points in the hall. We'll see how he digs out of this way. So I was told to be here at this time and I hear at this time.
[00:29:47] You are right on time, my friend, because we are in our segment called Holy Discontent where we get you rant about things in the world of sports that are bugging us. And my Holy Discontent this week is when a friend texts you because they're at a sporting event
[00:30:04] that you wish you could be at and you know the only reason that they are texting you is to make you jealous or to rub it in a little bit. So I'm sitting, I don't even remember where I was on Saturday.
[00:30:16] I think it was Saturday and I'm sitting and I get this text from Dave Worma from the guy I was down downtown Chicago that like hotel room that you were in. I think it was and you were there for the race blowing through the streets of Chicago
[00:30:29] and you knew that I wanted to be there and you're like, yeah, flags about to drop and I just am starting to get these messages and the whole thing. So please explain why? I'm under fan, you missed out man.
[00:30:43] I did and I really just want to hear what it was like because it worked. You got me. What was the race? Well, for those of you who may not know, NASCAR has made its entrance into Chicago land.
[00:30:57] And so there was the use to have the use to have a race out in the Jolietta, in Chicago and Speedway. But last year I think it was about a number one sport event of the year by the Associated Press
[00:31:09] I believe but the NASCAR street race happened last year and this was the second year in a row that happened. I mean, it was a smash hit and downtown Chicago. I think to be that touch cargo start starting to sign it fucking him found racing.
[00:31:25] I'm Michigan Avenue racing on Leach, or drive about 150 miles an hour incredible racing. It was so fun to be there to be in my hometown. It's town I grew up in town I went to school and I guess I'm a suburban night but love living downtown
[00:31:41] for four years in college and the sea. The guys I get to watch every Sunday because I'm a huge NASCAR fan on the streets that I walk and play on it was super fun. What was your vantage point?
[00:31:53] Did you watch from your balcony or read that a teaser that you sent me and then you got down? No, no, my brother lives on the corner of Michigan and Rosa Valtrode. That's basically looking straight down in the turns three, four and five.
[00:32:08] And so we got to watch and tailgate from the 38th floor this year and didn't have to buy a ticket. And just got to watch down on the track and listening on the radio and just having incredible time with friends and family watching the NASCAR race in Chicago.
[00:32:27] So when the tourists who are shopping down there run across the street, is that a problem? Is anybody getting kicked off? They don't keep picked off but I'll tell you, we walked all over Grant Park.
[00:32:41] We went into the fans zone and I think so that and one of our friends that was with us is an Aussie and so she was super excited to see Shane.
[00:32:51] And then we went to the band, Ginsburg and who won the inaugural release last year from Australia or Thick New Zealand. She was super excited to see him and there were people from all over the place.
[00:33:02] We met so many people from outside the country to come to Chicago specifically for that NASCAR race. Super awesome to see the fan base growing that way.
[00:33:10] Okay, so Dave, what is it that draws you to NASCAR when you're having to watch it from away as a way, right?
[00:33:19] You're not like you're down on the pitch or anything like that. You're up a ways away but you can still feel the streets rumble, you can still hear every bit of it. But in the city, I'm guessing you don't get to watch a long stretch.
[00:33:34] You get to see some, some, some, some, some, some, some, and they're going to be in the air. I mean, yeah for us we're from a high vantage point so we literally could see the entire track all the action every corner, every pass.
[00:33:44] And everywhere you could and to I don't know if you have never been to a NASCAR race. I mean, the feeling in your chest, the smell of that, those cars come by it's amazing.
[00:33:56] And so to see that and then it's just reverberating through the city off the ball, the buildings, everything is just so exciting to see what was going on.
[00:34:06] Yeah, I would have to say I've been to I think three NASCAR races in my lifetime and all three of them weren't absolute blind.
[00:34:13] All three of them. I would put them all in my top five like sporting events that I've been to just because of what you're saying. So, stinking fast and you don't get a sense of that when when you're watching television.
[00:34:26] Now, okay so George, I'm going to give you your choice on a beautiful fall Saturday.
[00:34:33] So, the races are in Dallas. They're winding their way through the streets and you can get a similar advantage point to what David has explained to us or at the same time in a really quirky confluence of scheduling At the same time, the Aggies are playing UT.
[00:34:54] And you've got seats, they're not seats on the 50. They're not in a private box, but they're like on the 25 yard line. You've got to tailgate thing. But at the races because of David's connections into the world of racing, you've got pit passes and all that kind of thing.
[00:35:09] Which one are you choosing George? Okay, okay, but this isn't fair for this year because this is the first time they've played since like 2012. We've always fair that tickets for this game are insane.
[00:35:24] Have you ever had to tell an aspiring young pastor at Dallas theological Seminary, the life is always fair? This is that time. That's awesome. Again, my hat is going to give it away. Again, we're not talking an embers' McNeese state or some directional Louisiana school.
[00:35:46] You know, I mean, it's it's the arch rival. So, So, I think for for four years all through college, I never went home for Thanksgiving. I was either in Austin or in college station for that game.
[00:35:58] So, but yeah, but I will say as well, NASCAR and it is it is a since eight all sensations. Yeah, well, every is all sensations. There's nothing else like it. We let Paul lead off our holy discontent with the taunting penalty against Dave and totally understandable.
[00:36:18] How are you planning to make that up to your friend, your brother in Christ Paul? I mean, that's incumbent upon you in some way. I didn't go to Dallas theological Seminary, but I think there's some sort of a come-up instance that's required here to not offend your brother.
[00:36:35] Silence. Dave, this is where your checkbook comes out. This is where we take the offer. It's a very moving moment. I'm listening. The invite to stand on that balcony was in Paul's pocket and he didn't come. So, I don't know what else I can do. There you go.
[00:36:53] You know? So, the next time we're camping at a track somewhere and I give you an invite, you don't take it. Don't be holy discontent towards me. You're only just content and keep it in your pocket, Victor. It's your first time with us on the program.
[00:37:10] Do you have anything that stuck in your car in the holy discontent realm before I share mine? Well again, I mean, out of this content are just so crushing.
[00:37:19] So, I went through a six week period. Dallas stars who we all thought, man, they're going to make the run. They got beat Mavericks. I went to one of the watch parties at the AAC.
[00:37:32] It was a one, you know, I mean, you know, angry Luca, but even if we'll have one thing that, you know, with angry Luca teams always beat superstars and just man, Boston was a team. And then you follow that up with the soul crushing 24 hours of A&M,
[00:37:52] and then you're losing the time run on bass third game of the college world series. They lose the Tennessee great game, and then 24 hours a later, our coach gets stolen. And 11 players go in the transfer portal and, you know, stole all the things stolen.
[00:38:08] So crushing Georgia, just want to remind you, I just want to remind you that you're talking to a Detroit sports fan. Welcome welcome David. We have special seating for the whole. So, I mean, a beloved Aggie is coaching the Detroit Lions and who I love.
[00:38:30] Yeah, nice try, but yes, I'm with you there. My whole existence takes us to the hat that George is wearing, a Texas A&M baseball coach Jim Shawshnygel.
[00:38:45] My summary is basically he lies and leaves, which I know that's not the first time in the history of sports that that's happened.
[00:38:54] But I'm going to play for you a sound bite from him, and then I'm going to play for you a few sound bites from some Texas A&M baseball fans. And you can draw your own conclusions as to what they thought of his sudden change of direction.
[00:39:11] Coach, with respect to the difficulty out come tonight. But with the rumor circulating today about a specific job opening. What do you have to say about your future and Aggie land?
[00:39:20] Yeah, I mean, I think it's pretty selfish of you to ask me that question, but I left my family to be the coach of Texas A&M. I took the job at Texas A&M to never take another job again. And that hasn't changed in my mind.
[00:39:36] That's unfair to talk about something like that. They'll be like you asking Montgomery if he's going to sign in the draft, but I understand you got to ask the question.
[00:39:44] But I gave up a big part of my life to come take this job and I've poured every ounce of my soul in this job. And I've given this job every single ounce I can possibly give it to write that.
[00:39:54] Well, okay, so he's angry at the questioner for questioning his allegiance. And then the next day he leaves the program and here are some fans reactions. Shot. Angry. I can't believe he did that. I mean, really.
[00:40:12] This cannot believe that he would sit there and get angry and report or asking the question. And then less than 24 hours later take that job.
[00:40:22] I know it's not the first time that's ever happened. But I keep wondering when it will stop happening. Why a coach can't just say in that press conference, I'll tell you what. It has been such an honor, such a blessing to be at this school.
[00:40:35] But just as you, the reporter probably are exploring, you know, advancements in your career. That's where I'm headed. I'll always love the school. No, he has to get he has to condescend to the reporter.
[00:40:50] He had to say was right now all I'm thinking about is my team exactly. That's all he needs to say, just right now. I'm focused on the young man. They played their hearts. That's all he had to say.
[00:41:04] Yeah. It's all he had to say. Why can't they get this right? Why do not why do coaches so often just get this wrong? It says not difficult crisis management consultation. We could send him a $500 an hour invoice.
[00:41:19] And the coaching would be just just say as little as possible. And please don't act indignant towards the question. Matthew five, right? Let your yes say simply yes or no. Isn't that how it's in the ESP, right?
[00:41:35] Well, and again, I mean, if you know, again, Texas, no, no, the history. He was at TCU. He left TCU to go to ANM. Now he's got to him. He's ticked off half the colleges in the state right now.
[00:41:48] David, we've I'm told by my executive producer, my ear that you have a wholly Discontent to share with us as well. So please feel free. I love Chicago and I wanted to have its best foot forward every weekend that Possibly could take take it step foot step forward.
[00:42:09] But to have rain two years in a row for the cup race really, really stinks. They did that started to the best they could to make up for that. They put a timer on all the crew achieved some teams news so they can strategize for
[00:42:26] the race, but it really was disappointing. I'm like, how many times do I have to pray Lord? That's not going to rain. The weather forecast said like 10% rain when we went to bed on Saturday night, but my Holy Discontent is with the rain and all of the interruptions
[00:42:47] that happened in the race because of it. So luckily I didn't pay for ticket like I said before, but they will still disappointed to see that race, not go to the full distance because of the weather. Just a real quick check in with Dr. Hillman.
[00:43:02] Is it okay to pray for good weather around a NASCAR race? Oh, absolutely. I'm sure it's in the message translation someplace. David, thanks for being with us. Good to meet you. We'll have to do it again sometime when we can stick around longer. Yeah, appreciate having me.
[00:43:25] I thank you for talking to my call as well. Let's move on to our, That guy segment. Right now this minute today, this week. I am the man! All right, we've done our, we've done our complaining and are wholly just content time.
[00:43:43] So now let's sing some praises of guys who are getting it right. Paul, why don't you lead us off? Yeah, so my that guy, my shout out this week goes to the, the soccer Twitter from the country of Argentina. Okay, so that's that's the right.
[00:43:59] I do see that coming. Yeah, apparently like I was watching the copa and the euros. There's been a lot of really good soccer on this summer speaking of a summer dead period. But Argentina was playing Canada in the copa, America and Drake, the rapper from Canada,
[00:44:20] placed a $300,000 bet against Argentina despite the fact that they're the number one team in the world and we got it. And of course, Argentina beat Canada to nothing and the Argentina,
[00:44:33] Twitter account comes back with a picture of the team celebrating with messy and all the guys and everything else. And the quote on the picture was on the meme was not like us,
[00:44:44] not with us which is a line from a diss track, a diss track by Kendrick Lamar, making fun of Drake. So I just love whenever Twitter gets creative and in this case, do I often delve into the world of rap to creatively make for another guy like Drake?
[00:45:05] I'm here for it. There's some feud and going on. Yes. In that realm. There are like, yeah, there are. I'm not exactly well plugged into it, but I know that the boys are fudin. I think Kendrick Lamar and Drake are kind of like Dylan Brooks and LeBron.
[00:45:17] A little bit. And when you say Kendrick Lamar, I just picture Kendrick Perkins and I know that those are two entirely different people. Yeah, very, very different levels of athleticism and everything. George, do you have a holy discontent? Something that's going to happen. I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
[00:45:32] That guy, somebody want to sing out the praises of. Well, let's just finish the full circle with Aggie Baseball. So one is so slash takes all the coaches with him over to the University of Texas. But Michael early, who was the hitting coach comes back.
[00:45:50] And this was the cool thing. Seven of the players came back. Oh, really? They had they loved him as a coach. And so again, it showed his character that the minute he comes back,
[00:46:05] I mean, a lot of key players that were in that transfer portal at least seven of them said, Yeah, we're coming back and following him because we see him as a leader. And again, these are in press full young man 18, 19, 20 years old. Again, there's money being thrown.
[00:46:21] There's all these various different things. But I think they recognize, we'll see how this pans up. I think they recognize the character, how he treated them. And so those players came back, which is great. That's cool. That's very cool. Yeah. My that guy is actually two guys.
[00:46:35] We'll play a couple of soundbites for you. The first is from Rory McWarroy, who kind of disappeared after a. A tough finish at the US open a few weeks ago, where he kind of had it and gave it back on the final three holes.
[00:46:52] And he's not been heard from since until now because now the. The top players in the world are gearing up to play in the the open championship or the British open. So he's over there back home, basically at a tune-up tournament with his first press conference.
[00:47:08] And he was asked how he has handled the criticism since he kind of dropped gagged away the US open. I remember there was a high rate of such a great deal by when.
[00:47:20] But they're always there to say it's such a, you know, they criticize when you don't win. So at the end of the day, they're not there. They're not in the area. They're not the ones that are head in the shots and they can't decisions.
[00:47:33] And if someone said we once if. If you would never. If you'd never take advice from these people and even we've never taken a criticism. See that show certainly when going to a high game for advice. And even the name he said at the end was hey,
[00:47:53] Hey, any who used to coach tiger and Hank is kind of a. Desperate for attention these days so he was taking some shots or Rory. So I kind of appreciated that. I'm a Rory fan and wish he had ended up winning the open, but.
[00:48:06] He leaks tea after he went into hiding for a couple of weeks to regroup. He came out and directly addressed the questions. My, my other that guy is the legend.
[00:48:14] His nickname is the ultimate driving machine because he's German and Bernard Langer has been a professional golfer for 51 years. And he just finished up a tournament qualifier a couple of weeks ago actually last week. And he was a professional golfer in the first place.
[00:48:34] Over in Europe and is winding down his competitive time. One of the most successful golfers in history. And he was asked in his press conference at the end of the tournament.
[00:48:46] What does all this mean to you when I finished school and I tried to become a golf professional. People didn't even know what that was. It didn't even exist as a profession in a way. It was very difficult complicated, but it was my dream.
[00:49:02] And so yeah, I was able to live that dream for 51 years now. So professional golfer. That's a 51 years. I asked him last year when he was in Michigan competing. I said because he's still very good, still very competitive even though he's older than even the champions to golfers.
[00:49:27] I said if these guys ever encouraged you to sail off into retirement. And he said, I invited them to share with me a disappearance fee that they would pay themselves. And he said if they were to come up with a disappearance fee, I would no longer bother them.
[00:49:43] Well, I think he's he's winding down a little bit. So I'm a big fan of Bernard and wish him nothing but the best. Let's wrap it up with a three minute message. As we do every week, Homer, I'd like you to remember Matthew 7, 26.
[00:50:00] Though foolish man who built his house on sound and you remember. Matthew 21, 17. And he left them and went out of the city into Bethany and he logged there. Yeah. Think about it. There you go.
[00:50:20] That's not only do we have a special guest with us and Dr. George Hillman, but he's going to take the three minute message to wind things down so it is all yours. Absolutely. Well again, like I said a couple minutes ago, my sports soul had been crushed.
[00:50:35] And we're even talking about Texas Rangers. Although they're turning it around at all start break. So that's a good thing as well. But just you know, three of my teams lost in all just very heartbreaking. You know, you're humiliating fashion.
[00:50:51] And you know, especially after that A&M loss, I'm going to phone the next day. I just really was and it is just so important to remember that is not my identity as my sports teams. Galatians 220 says,
[00:51:04] I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live across lives in me. But life I now live in the body I live by faith in the son of God who loved me and gave himself up for me.
[00:51:16] And you know, whether it is the sports season, it churches that I'm a member of political alliances. You're going to get disappointed. And if the identity is based on stuff that's here on the earth, it is always going to disappoint and our identity is found in Christ.
[00:51:35] And we have to be reminded of this. And I think it's one of the reminders that sometimes why we don't get the ultimate fulfillment this side of heaven is because there's something greater on the other side. And then one closer to one more passage,
[00:51:49] Clotian Street 133, Paul goes further with this point. He says, since then you've been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above or Christ has seated at the right hand of God and set your mind on things above,
[00:52:04] not on earthly things for you died in your life is now hidden in Christ in God. And it's just a reminder, even when you have a really bad sports week or a really bad sports month, that's not my identity.
[00:52:20] Even though I got a lot of hats and a lot of polo shirts with they and them low those on it, my identity has to be in Christ. So that's my three minutes right there. That's really good.
[00:52:31] And it's interesting how often we will more readily associate ourselves with our favorite teams that we will with Christ. In the presence of other people. So really good reminder, George. Thank you for that.
[00:52:44] Glad to have you with us on the podcast. It's really cool. Let's do it again several times. I don't know if Paul told you this though. First time guests are solely responsible for bringing in roughly 2,000 listeners.
[00:52:59] So good luck. We wish you nothing but the best and for every one that you come up under 2,000, then there's a fine per listener. So that's how Paul and I get dinner together. So you've got about a week. I'll have to work on my NIL money for that.
[00:53:15] Just head over to Oregon. It's a lot of it. That's right. Thank you all for listening. Appreciate you being with us here on church view sports. It is the summer time. So we have a little bit wider schedule once fall kicks in.
[00:53:26] We'll be back hopefully on a weekly basis. But appreciate you being connected with us spreading the word and celebrating this connection of sports and life and faith that forms the foundation of church view sports. And we'll talk to you again next time.
