[00:00:00] I'm gonna come here and try to do the best I can to rip the NFL up.

[00:00:03] They call me the freak, man.

[00:00:04] I'm a freak of nature.

[00:00:07] You're gonna see today, just keep your eyes glued to the TV.

[00:00:09] The following is a presentation of Hobson Media.

[00:00:13] Woohoo!

[00:00:14] Anybody care what this guy thinks?

[00:00:17] No!

[00:00:18] This is the Church Pew Sports podcast, featuring a group of pastors delivering bombastic takes

[00:00:28] on sports, life and faith.

[00:00:30] I knew it was possibility to see it in real time.

[00:00:34] Holy cannoli.

[00:00:35] This is crazy.

[00:00:36] Take a knee.

[00:00:37] This game's all about scoring points, guys.

[00:00:38] We gotta score some points.

[00:00:40] Lend an ear.

[00:00:41] These are some of the best questions I've had.

[00:00:43] I have to tell you that straight up.

[00:00:45] What was that special?

[00:00:46] As the Church Pew Sports podcast begins.

[00:00:49] It's more like a baseball bat than a knee cap.

[00:00:51] That man next to you is somebody that gots to heaven today.

[00:00:56] We ain't got tomorrow.

[00:00:57] We got now.

[00:00:58] And with that, we welcome you in to Church Pew Sports.

[00:01:02] It's great to have you with us as we connect sports to life and faith.

[00:01:06] Just kind of have a fun time doing it.

[00:01:08] Bill Hobson here along with Paul Miller who is in studio not on Zoom and at some hotel

[00:01:14] room and some far flung part of the country.

[00:01:17] Good to see ya.

[00:01:18] It's kind of nice to be back.

[00:01:20] Did you miss me?

[00:01:21] Is that why you came home?

[00:01:22] Yes.

[00:01:23] Mostly you.

[00:01:24] You and my wife but mostly you.

[00:01:25] In which order?

[00:01:26] I'm kind of careful with that one.

[00:01:27] And we also have a special guest with us tonight that I'd like to have you introduce and then

[00:01:31] we'll kind of get into where we're headed.

[00:01:33] Yeah, I want to introduce all of you who are listening to my new teammate and friend

[00:01:39] Alex Rausch from the EFCA National Office in Minneapolis when I took the new gig

[00:01:45] at the beginning of the year.

[00:01:47] Alex was one of the first guys that I felt like I could talk sports with this

[00:01:51] guy.

[00:01:52] He was primarily because he's a Minnesotan and so he just kind of the accent.

[00:02:00] Does he clearly come across like a Minnesotan?

[00:02:03] He does and he's Minnesota nice which is a whole thing.

[00:02:07] Alex how are you?

[00:02:08] I'm well, how are you guys?

[00:02:09] It is good to see you man.

[00:02:10] So you're a lifer in Minneapolis which means we got some Viking things to talk about

[00:02:14] but we also have a little rookie hazing that we do for all first time church

[00:02:19] pew guests.

[00:02:20] I forgot to mention this to you Alex.

[00:02:22] We have a question that we ask every first time guest on the podcast so that our listeners

[00:02:29] can get to know you a little bit.

[00:02:31] It's pretty simple question.

[00:02:33] Who are the teams that you root for, that you support?

[00:02:37] Any sport, any level, who are the teams that you support at kind of fanatical levels

[00:02:45] where people who know you maybe your wife or whoever look at you and go what is

[00:02:49] wrong with him?

[00:02:51] Who are those teams for you?

[00:02:53] Yeah, the only team that I would say I'm at a fanatical point about is the Vikings.

[00:03:02] I have some other friends who are fanatics about like the Timberwolves and twins so I'll

[00:03:10] kind of jump on the bandwagons a little bit when the Timberwolves are doing well

[00:03:15] like this season and the twins did well last season but I only have time to follow one sports

[00:03:24] team like a fanatic and that's going to be the Minnesota Vikings for me.

[00:03:29] Here we are, here I am in Detroit Lions country, Paul of course is a bears kind of guy

[00:03:35] and between the Vikings and the Lions, you know the rivalry of course in the division

[00:03:38] is really powerful but so is the frustration at the lack of Super Bowl success.

[00:03:46] I say we, like I'm a lion, we're riding high right now.

[00:03:50] What are Vikings fans riding right now?

[00:03:53] How are you?

[00:03:54] Your quarterback's gone, you kind of have a reset at that position so as we get ready

[00:03:58] here on the, let's see Eve of the Draft or three Eves out as we record this, what's

[00:04:04] the mood like?

[00:04:06] I mean I would say for me and my buddies there's just a buzz of excitement at a possibility

[00:04:15] for what could be.

[00:04:18] You know we had some decent at least years with Kirk at the helm before that we had some

[00:04:27] fillings with Bradford and Kenum, Teddy Bridgewater was the guy before that who,

[00:04:35] I mean devastating knee injury but never lived up to the hype so that's 10 years of our quarterback

[00:04:41] history so the fact that we might have somebody for the first time in a decade that could be

[00:04:48] like that guy in the eyes of everybody there's a third blind hope for me going into the draft.

[00:04:55] It's not fully blind though and that's good.

[00:04:58] I remember we were talking I was telling you Alex that Bill and I were going to go

[00:05:02] to the draft because it's in Detroit and I was trying to talk you into road tripping with me and

[00:05:05] then we have since decided not to go but it got me thinking about things that are on my bucket

[00:05:12] list as a sports fan like I want to go to the NFL draft at some point in my lifetime.

[00:05:18] I also want to go to Red Wings training camp in Traverse City.

[00:05:22] Yeah I want to catch a soccer match in Aliens Arena in Germany where Bayern

[00:05:28] you play there I have a list of things what else would be on your guys's bucket list of

[00:05:33] things that you haven't done yet as a sports fan but you hope to someday.

[00:05:37] Well I've got to play Augusta National I mean that's at some point that's got to happen but

[00:05:41] you know I've been beating that door down for 30 years and it's still not happening.

[00:05:46] I was really excited about going to the draft it's obviously never going to be closer than

[00:05:50] it is right now yeah and then I started doing some research and talking to some people who

[00:05:55] are involved in it and they basically scared me away. I'm not a go stand with a quarter of a

[00:06:03] million people kind of guy or even more frustrating try to park in downtown Detroit with what they're

[00:06:09] anticipating to be 200 to 250,000 people that's just that doesn't sound appealing to me.

[00:06:15] Why so many people because they're people like you and me or is it just because it's a Midwest

[00:06:20] location or I mean I don't know. I don't know the draft has become an event I mean it's not like

[00:06:26] it used to be when you'd see all the GMs sitting in the same room with helmet phones in front of them

[00:06:32] and smoke wafting up from the various workstations and then you know the the draftees wouldn't even

[00:06:38] be in the building they'd get called at home that's now it's big time it's going to be

[00:06:43] multiple days across multiple networks and it's a big deal sounds fun now if somebody said to

[00:06:49] me Bill I've got a couple of VIP passes for you because that's how spoiled I am yeah I'd be like oh

[00:06:55] okay a helicopter too or what are we doing so yeah Alex how about you what's on your bucket list still?

[00:07:02] You know first thing that comes to mind would probably be a playoff like in-game

[00:07:10] and then that'd be pretty fun winter go home you know that's right okay so I was flying into

[00:07:16] Minneapolis for one of our collaboration weeks I don't know if I ever told you the story Alex and

[00:07:21] I'm sitting at the Bobby was with me and we were sitting at the gate waiting to fly up and

[00:07:27] there was a guy dressed head to toe in Vikings gear purple and gold right I have all of it the whole

[00:07:33] thing face paint no not the face paint but he was just sitting at the gate whatever and

[00:07:37] I was sitting close enough to him that I leaned over and I said hey so so in or out on Kirk

[00:07:43] Cousins that's all I said and 30 minutes later he's done ranting to me about the Vikings and Kirk

[00:07:50] Cousins and all this other stuff and then they call our numbers to line up at Southwest Airlines

[00:07:56] and he's he's got a higher lower number than us so he's going to board the plane sooner yeah

[00:08:01] but he trades back with somebody he's back so that he can stand next to me he's working a draft

[00:08:06] date and continue to talk to me about the draft and then he's like hey man we can sit together

[00:08:11] on the flight we can just keep talking and I looked at Bobby you're like I look back at him and I said

[00:08:15] hey man I'm really sorry but for the sake of my marriage I think I gotta end this

[00:08:21] well there are people who get really worked up by it all and the intrigue is is pretty palpable

[00:08:27] especially if you have a team with some very clear needs and that there are some potential

[00:08:32] college players who are really looking like they're a great fit for that need yeah so there are

[00:08:37] times when it's pretty obvious what the top of the draft is going to look like and then you hoped that

[00:08:43] by the time we get to your team you'll be able to fill in with something that will help so you

[00:08:48] know here's Alex his his Vikings are picking where are you going you're picking 11th so that's

[00:08:53] that's not terribly high at this point and 23rd I think yeah so they've got two of them um 11th

[00:08:58] and according to this just just the 11th is all I'm seeing 23 we have 23 oh there it is they traded

[00:09:07] for yes okay they took Cleveland's 23rd pick and then my Lions are 29th so it's hard to know what kind

[00:09:12] of difference you're gonna make in in your pick in every every GM everywhere every player personnel

[00:09:20] director and certainly every director of scouting is both motivated by and haunted by Tom Brady

[00:09:31] right because everybody passed on him many times it's not like you had one shot at him you had

[00:09:40] five rounds of shots at this guy yeah so I'm curious Alex what you think helps define a great

[00:09:49] prospect in the eyes of coaches and GM's and player personnel directors because this this science

[00:09:57] is definitely inexact when it comes to draft excellence and success so what what do you

[00:10:02] hope your Vikings are really paying attention to and and queuing in on when it comes time for that

[00:10:08] 11th pick you know O'Connell has gone on record as um being pretty specific about a few things

[00:10:20] and he's a former quarterback himself um so I want to say I trust his opinion

[00:10:28] on on those items um and yeah not not being a scout anywhere near myself in

[00:10:37] riding the coattails of O'Connell's experience he seems to emphasize greatly accuracy

[00:10:43] and then I guess having traits that are coachable like he was mentioned just the other day like

[00:10:51] footwork is probably something you can fix but there's some other things that you can't fix

[00:10:56] so then there's the weighing the decision of whether or not you can fix that personally I'd say to

[00:11:02] uh some intangible on the leadership front of things somebody that the team can rally around

[00:11:09] would be really important for me um we've seen that with Kirk it Kirk Kirk's a little bit of

[00:11:15] an interesting fella um and gets gets Cole's cast jokes and all that type of thing kind of the

[00:11:22] kind of the dad playing quarterback um and I don't think he was ever really respected for that until

[00:11:30] just the last maybe couple years I think part of that helped by the Netflix documentary

[00:11:36] but you could tell that the team loved Kirk like they really rallied around him

[00:11:42] and that made for fun football and I think it makes for a good leader too

[00:11:46] you know it's it's interesting when you look at the default choices so the default is that Caleb

[00:11:52] Williams is the one pick right yeah because all of his intangibles make him a great pick a fit in

[00:11:57] Chicago yeah I don't yeah we'll go we'll come back to that well so he's been sitting in front of

[00:12:03] some microphones trying to answer questions about what what to expect because he didn't do

[00:12:07] the combine and he's had a couple of different pro day workouts but for the most part and I

[00:12:12] don't think it's a bad strategy for the most part a guy in his position said basically I I don't

[00:12:18] need to come work out for you look at my tape I've got plenty of stuff on tape um I guess you could

[00:12:25] consider that a bit of a risky approach to all of it depending on how confident you are in the

[00:12:29] kid and that's what leads to a bunch of the interviews so he's done a little bit more media

[00:12:34] leading in and uh he's he doesn't lack confidence in his own ability here's a quick

[00:12:40] thought about um well you can set it up this is this is the thought about why he went where he went

[00:12:46] yeah this is him talking to Ryan Clark I think it was you know Caleb Williams is talking about um

[00:12:52] why he went to USC why he went to play for Lincoln Riley and how that turned out for him or I guess

[00:12:58] Oklahoma initially and then he followed him to USC and as you're talking I after we listened

[00:13:03] to this I also want to get Alex's take on JJ because there's so much tape on JJ there's a lot

[00:13:07] of talk about JJ being a Viking too so here's Caleb Williams yeah Spencer Rattler was a projected

[00:13:12] first round pick yeah the next year yeah you had to pivot because they decided to start the guy

[00:13:19] that was supposed to be a first round pick that year is what you're saying yeah why'd you choose

[00:13:25] to go there development so you thought that I'd known that he Lincoln was the best in the

[00:13:33] country so why did it hurt you though that the end because I was the best in the country I told

[00:13:39] people before I went there that I was gonna I was gonna start and play and beat him out I thought I

[00:13:44] beat him out in spring and he was a projected number one and all of that so they they he started

[00:13:50] for six games and so I prepared I kept preparing I was Lincoln told me keep I'm sorry cut that off

[00:13:57] I didn't mean to cut that off so early but he basically said because I was better yeah he's not

[00:14:03] lacking for confidence and that's that's pretty apparent which is good yeah that'll serve him well

[00:14:11] in a city like Chicago but he's got other things going on that we need to talk about but Alex I

[00:14:16] want to I know we got a short window with you so I want to ask you what are you said at the

[00:14:19] beginning of this podcast that you knew as a Vikings fan who was going to be the savior

[00:14:25] so that means you know if it's JJ or if it's Drake may how far are they gonna trade up is it

[00:14:33] good is Jaden Dan is Jane Daniels gonna fall what's gonna happen I heard a rumor that they might trade

[00:14:41] for Justin Herbert because Harbaugh wants to draft JJ so tell I'm anxious for this hot take

[00:14:49] what's what are the Vikings gonna do well we're not gonna trade for Justin Herbert

[00:14:57] because have you heard that rumor I've heard it oh for sure yeah and there's some Viking

[00:15:02] fans who would I mean just be in awe of that situation and I can see it but personally and

[00:15:09] I think the Vikings front office they intentionally wanted to get away from the big contract

[00:15:14] at QB they want to try to take a shot with that rookie the rookie deal they've overpaid a little bit

[00:15:22] I don't think they're going Herbert um I would say that's the their plan A if I

[00:15:30] had to guess which means I know I think their plan A is May and I think their plan B is JJ

[00:15:36] McCarthy um and whether or not those are gonna happen I think largely depends on New England

[00:15:44] for May I think we would probably have to trade up to three yeah to get Drake May McCarthy I could see

[00:15:52] dropping a little bit further there's some really good players outside of the quarterbacks in this

[00:15:57] draft too um and as much as everybody wants to get the the the hall that the Bears got last

[00:16:04] year for the Bryce Young trade yeah it just might not be offered to them and are you gonna

[00:16:09] pass on Marvin Harrison Jr. and Malik neighbors when they're sitting there in front of you I don't

[00:16:15] think a lot of these teams are gonna choose to pass on those guys um so we'll see how it falls um

[00:16:24] I would say that for me I'm thinking if people don't trade the Giants are a little bit of a wild

[00:16:30] card they've been rumored enough to take a quarterback that I think they could I do also

[00:16:35] think Daniel Jones cap hit is insane it's like 69 million in dead cap if they caught him this year so

[00:16:43] the Giants might pass for that reason um I think Tennessee goes tackle so I'd be looking at the

[00:16:49] Vikings to start trading up at about eight eight nine ten if they can't get into that top three

[00:16:56] so who's left at that point from the quarterback position now is it like bow nicks and I mean I don't

[00:17:02] know who else besides well penics yeah yeah I'd be penics or nicks but I'm thinking that McCarthy

[00:17:08] could potentially be there at eight if the Giants don't go quarterback because they're the only real

[00:17:13] threat there for quarterback unless somebody else trades up okay so it's nicks or penics I hope we

[00:17:18] don't trade up I'm gonna give you the voice do you get to be the voice of Vikings fans

[00:17:23] what what is the reaction if uh good Dell steps up or whoever whatever player they have

[00:17:31] steps up and says with the 11th pick or with the the traded up to the seventh pick the Minnesota

[00:17:36] Vikings select JJ McCarthy from the University of Michigan is the place are they throwing glass

[00:17:42] bricks through glass windows or are you like yeah that's pretty good I'm glad I'm happy for this

[00:17:47] I'm in yeah and I haven't heard people be really vocal against McCarthy either

[00:17:56] um I think McCarthy's shown enough especially from an efficiency standpoint the volume's hard to know

[00:18:04] because you haven't seen uh you know Michigan dominated without needing to throw the ball very

[00:18:09] much but I would be super bought into McCarthy I think most people in Vikings nation would be

[00:18:17] excited about a McCarthy pick as long as we maybe the one caveat would be as long as we don't

[00:18:24] bet the entire future on making that happen like if you had to trade 11 and 23 to get them

[00:18:31] I think we might get away with 11 and 23 um from a fan base standpoint but if we trade the 25 one as

[00:18:39] well that's where I start to get like that's that's that's a lot remind me Alex if you would what

[00:18:45] is the running back situation in Minnesota like I think part of JJ's success is that he could

[00:18:50] hand the ball off to some really talented backs yeah we just signed Aaron Jones and free agency from

[00:18:56] Green Bay um which I love Jones yeah his question would be health other than that we don't have anybody

[00:19:04] but as long as Jones stays healthy I we're good there so you're you're basing your hopes on a

[00:19:10] China doll is what you're saying could get cracked yeah man I it's a bit of a roll of the dice

[00:19:20] right well and that's what the draft is oh yeah that's true for when you hear the outrage or even

[00:19:25] when you hear the raucous celebrations of we got our guy let me just take everybody back

[00:19:31] to when the Green Bay Packers got their guy his name was Tony Mandrich yeah and the lions

[00:19:38] ended up with the guy named Barry Sanders and you know that worked out for them and we can go

[00:19:43] through those examples so often because it's it's such an inexact effort to put all this

[00:19:47] together and you know and I'm reminded of and we probably I don't know if I'm supposed to encourage

[00:19:52] people to watch the movie draft they are not because it's got some language issues in it but

[00:19:56] there are some moments of draft day deal making that you just you gotta almost take these in before

[00:20:02] you watch the real draft yeah but you want them Tom don't you Seahawk fans want a hero and you

[00:20:07] denied them not that bad don't lie to me I checked all the Seahawk fan blogs and chat rooms

[00:20:12] they're all calling for your head ever since you traded away Callahan the Barbarians are at

[00:20:16] the gate I don't care about that yeah you do you and I both know I have the golden ticket now Tom and

[00:20:24] if I give it to you you get to save Seahawk football in Seattle you know this is the kind of oh I just

[00:20:30] want to go home and watch it now this is what you want to have your ear your earpiece tuned into

[00:20:33] that's the channel we want we don't need the Mel Kuiper channel no we don't need the 30 second

[00:20:38] highlight reel of the offensive lineman from Rutgers who got chosen we need this channel

[00:20:43] and fans would pay to be piped into war room conversations I know it's not gonna happen but

[00:20:47] okay uh Alex I know you have a limited window and there is one more if we keep saying that we'll

[00:20:52] just keep on we'll keep it for the whole night it's kind of gone it's like a pastor who's like

[00:20:56] and in conclusion that he's just seven more minutes I've got I got one question that I do

[00:20:59] have to ask and it's a little bit off topic but not fully so you're sitting in your

[00:21:04] room this conversation with a buckeye fan and a wolverine fan right and you don't live in Ohio

[00:21:12] or Michigan so I just need you to um tell us do people outside of our echo chamber care

[00:21:23] about all the stuff that went down with Michigan with the the sign stealing and all that other

[00:21:27] stuff do they care that Jim Harbaugh got a second rate tattoo that said 15 and 0 do they care

[00:21:34] about all the things that guys like bill tend to glom on to and guys like me tend to make fun of

[00:21:41] or is it not even a headline in other parts of the country I just need you to kind of set us

[00:21:48] straight a little bit yeah it's good um I listened to your guys's podcast episode on that

[00:21:54] topic so I thought about this some um by and large I would say we don't care

[00:22:03] we don't care beyond the fact that we'll remember that Michigan went 15 and 0 they won the national

[00:22:10] championship and there was some sign stealing stuff talked about in there but everyone maybe

[00:22:16] does that sometimes um yeah I would say by and large don't care a whole lot

[00:22:22] and did the announcement go by largely unnoticed from a couple days ago that this coming season

[00:22:28] in all division one football there will be helmet communication between the sidelines and the

[00:22:33] quarterbacks because that's starting now and you're welcome that's really good I just wanted

[00:22:40] to well I just want to make sure everybody knew where all that came from it came from a coach

[00:22:45] by the way who's living a really good life in an RV it's done me right just got all the way

[00:22:51] out here from Michigan made some uh made some good trips oh my up in Michigan pictured rocks and

[00:22:56] Mackinac Island into Gettysburg Baltimore Kansas City but by far this has been uh the longest and

[00:23:04] it's been uh been a great trip kind of inspired by uh growing up watching the rockford files got

[00:23:09] my dvds have been mostly rockford rockford episodes so your coach Jim James Harbaugh

[00:23:16] goofy guy is parked in an RV park next to people who have no idea who he is a lady comes over and

[00:23:22] she says hey welcome it's good to see you are you interested in football because he has a charger

[00:23:26] is thinking he goes well I I am yes I work I work for the team and he's got an entire cabinet full

[00:23:32] of rockford files because I don't really know why so Alex um I have an insane former coach who

[00:23:39] has since cleaned out the cupboards of all the other coaches that helped us make

[00:23:43] make a successful run so we're going to live off of 2023 for a while because it

[00:23:48] could be a while before it comes back around but hey I know you've got to go I was gonna

[00:23:52] use we need to know how the NFC north is going to play out yeah we need a prediction from you

[00:23:56] for this next season yeah we'll have you back on by the way to also prove how wrong you were but

[00:24:01] yes yeah Viking's going from go right to the top you know I'm not that hopeful

[00:24:09] um I I think it's going to be

[00:24:14] I'm gonna go lions taking it again I think yeah they got a nice team built in there

[00:24:23] Packers I'm just not gonna like the Packers no matter what so I think they remember

[00:24:28] they're gonna fight for last we're gonna say Caleb Williams brings the bears to second and

[00:24:33] the NFC north all right and uh the Vikings are gonna edge the Packers because that's just what

[00:24:39] we're gonna we're gonna do this year with our rookie I like I like your thinking yeah definitely

[00:24:43] have to have you come back on thank you so much for taking a few minutes out during kid

[00:24:47] tuck in time and spending it with us and let's do it again absolutely and my draft day sign off

[00:24:54] comment will be Drake may no matter what wow all right all right if it happens I'm calling

[00:25:01] you I don't have your number but I'm gonna find your number and I'm calling you have it you have it

[00:25:05] oh that's right I do have it actually thanks Alex appreciate it Alex Alex joining us from up in

[00:25:10] Minneapolis and Paul we think about the draft um it's kind of seems like the first three slots at

[00:25:16] least for sure are largely predicted to be quarterbacks with Caleb going first and I'm not sure if

[00:25:21] there's an agreed upon order for the next two uh but it's kind of seems that way when do you

[00:25:27] think we get to the non-quarterback part of the draft how far down in well this is that question

[00:25:32] like when does the draft really start because the pundits always talk about the draft really starts

[00:25:37] at the fourth pick or whatever and so you like you got Caleb Williams going one you got depending

[00:25:41] on who you listen to jaden daniels or did you see today that the that vagus changed the odds on

[00:25:47] JJ going number two like hugely it was his favor to go to two to go at two which is crazy

[00:25:54] there's a lot of smoke blowing about JJ McCarthy that would send him to the uh to the commanders

[00:26:00] yeah so let's be sane and let's say the commanders take uh jaden daniels

[00:26:05] and then you're looking at the patriots at number three and they've gone on record is saying they

[00:26:09] need to come out of the draft with a quarterback right so if they're gonna trade back that means

[00:26:14] that they believe in my pentics or bonex or some of those other next tier quarterbacks

[00:26:22] in this draft yeah um and they could trade out for that draft hall and that's where the vikings

[00:26:28] could slide in and get drake may but i think drake may will be picked in the third slot

[00:26:33] regardless of what team it is that's my prediction always curious to know how much weight a team

[00:26:40] puts on the comp level of competition a prospect faced so you look at drake may and i don't

[00:26:47] think you would say he faced a nfl caliber gauntlet of a schedule couple of tough games in the acc right

[00:26:53] like florida state and clemson but not yeah i mean i'm assuming he played those guys you know

[00:26:57] but then again i have to be fair because really most teams now front load their schedules with

[00:27:02] next to nothing including my wolverines for the first half of the season until they got into

[00:27:06] the meat of conference play um so your bears ninth pick in the draft yeah well let's let's

[00:27:14] just work our way there right like so the so uh the cardinals are at four do they take marvin

[00:27:19] harrison jr do they trade back whatever it is that's where you get stuck with the chargers and

[00:27:25] jim harbaugh at five and maybe the possibility of harbaugh drafting a buck eye which i think he

[00:27:34] would do oh absolutely without he's there to win twice about it and there's some great talent

[00:27:38] out there yeah so then you get down to the bears so i so i'm saying that the draft starts at

[00:27:43] the cardinals at number four if there's no trades that happen whatever that's what i'm saying the

[00:27:48] draft starts and that's a team that needs everything they do but they could really use they could really

[00:27:53] use marvin harrison jr so oh so good so good to try any chancey that's right okay so the bears are

[00:27:59] at nine and it's interesting the bears uh have one and nine and then they have like two more picks

[00:28:06] in the rest of the draft so after the first ten picks are done bears fans are going to be checked

[00:28:12] out you know but ratings in chicago will dip precipitously yeah like i'll probably turn it off

[00:28:18] after the bears make their picket thing so that's not true i'll watch the whole thing

[00:28:23] so i think the bears go one of two ways and it depends on how the draft falls i think if um

[00:28:28] roland with dunes a or malik neighbors i don't think neighbors will be there but if

[00:28:33] o'dunse drops or falls to nine and the bears can get one of those top tier wide receivers i

[00:28:39] think they go that way but if not there's going to be a number of offensive tackles to choose from

[00:28:44] and i think that's that's what they'll do is it i don't think they need defense i think they need

[00:28:50] to help out their new rookie quarterback and i realize that in all of professional sports

[00:28:58] it the num the dollars help bear this out the most important position is quarterback

[00:29:05] yeah it's it's above your goalie and hockey it's above your you're starting your ace starting

[00:29:10] pitcher and baseball because he only pitches once every five days it's it's probably close to a

[00:29:16] shack like center but still the quarterback is literally the glue that holds all that together

[00:29:21] both on and off the field and yet if i saw on my board the opportunity to get marvin harrison

[00:29:30] jr man would i have a hard time passing him over i i think you have the potential here to be looking

[00:29:36] at another marvin harrison or maybe even a gerry may be even a step above yeah i agree i think he's

[00:29:44] phenomenal i think what's the term generational talent i think it feels that way yeah so it'll

[00:29:49] be interesting to see at what point is i think he's the first non qb that's drafted yeah so

[00:29:56] it'll just depend it'll just be what team you know are there any trades and and how desperate are

[00:30:01] some of the teams that need to get a quarterback like the vikings you know or the patriots what are

[00:30:06] they gonna do um and uh we'll see i don't know and i think marvin has a good shot really good

[00:30:13] shot at being the next rook of the year from ohio state like give me a you know indulge me for

[00:30:20] a moment as i go 2016 joey bosa 2017 marseille latimore 2019 nick bosa 2020 chase young 2022

[00:30:29] gary wilson 2023 cj stroud they're on a roll those were all brookies of the year offensive and

[00:30:34] defensive i don't know i did not realize that all from ohio state so they're they're on a

[00:30:38] roll with that so it'd be pretty sweet if marvin was the next guy in that order and i think he's

[00:30:45] got a real shot to be because it's i think probably easier for a receiver to make an impact year one

[00:30:52] than a quarterback and for all of those who are rolling their eyes that he did not play the bowl

[00:30:57] game if his name is called for your team during the draft you are not going to be upset about

[00:31:02] that whatsoever well uh detroit will be a zoo it will be a madhouse it's very cool that the

[00:31:08] events coming to the motor city um obviously a lot of work has gone into staging all of it if

[00:31:14] you are going the advice i was given because i believe the first pick on thursday is made at like

[00:31:21] eight p.m i think that it's for prime time so i'm pretty sure that's when they go on the clock or

[00:31:25] that's when the show starts the advice that i was given by a gentleman who's working the event was

[00:31:31] they're telling people that they want to get to the downtown area like five hours early i have no

[00:31:42] interest in doing that but a lot of people do they're supposed to be a huge huge contingency from all

[00:31:47] over the country so if you're going get there early have fun and and be safe yeah go and have fun

[00:31:52] friends meanwhile let's get down to some holy discontent it's time to blow off some steam

[00:32:02] get it off your chest rant about what's most bothering you i got a lot of problems with

[00:32:07] people now you're gonna hear about it it's time for holy discontent okay so i'll lead out on the

[00:32:15] holy discontent and it it's kind of linked to the fact that i've been traveling quite a bit lately bill

[00:32:20] and i thought this was going to be my opportunity to avoid the dreaded blackout because i wasn't

[00:32:28] going to be logging on from my team's viewing area i was hoping to catch some red wings games

[00:32:34] as the regular season wound down and they played exciting hockey the last week of the season they

[00:32:40] certainly did um but my holy discontent is all about the stinking blackouts the local blackouts

[00:32:49] which back in the day we've talked about this to be the nfl no it's not and back in the day

[00:32:53] that the thinking was you need to black it out so that guys will fans will actually buy tickets

[00:32:58] and go to the arena and watch their team play well now they're it's just gouging yeah it's just

[00:33:05] driving people to have to buy multiple platforms i read an article a blog post by clay travis on this

[00:33:13] today and i don't often quote clay travis but sometimes he is right on so in some ways i'm

[00:33:19] kind of yielding my holy discontent to clay travis because he has the perfect solution

[00:33:24] he said in this article that they should teams should create a golden ticket so if you're like

[00:33:30] a red wings fan you can buy from the red wings a golden ticket which allows you to access whatever

[00:33:38] platform their game is being broadcast on and the team works it out with amazon and valley and

[00:33:46] espn plus and all the different places where you might go to find your favorite sports team

[00:33:52] and all you have to do as a fan is buy your golden ticket so you could buy your ticket for your team

[00:33:56] such a good idea or for your sport like i like the nhl i i love the red wings but i and i don't

[00:34:04] know if i would want to watch all nhl games all the time but anytime the red wings are on i get

[00:34:09] frustrated if they're blacked out which is more often than not so i love that idea and here's

[00:34:14] him talking about it i just i'm just gonna read clay travis as if it's me talking yeah right okay

[00:34:19] so here we go and i don't need and i don't want to need a billion passwords to do this anyways with

[00:34:25] my golden ticket and i don't want to subscribe to a million streaming services which are virtually

[00:34:29] impossible to switch rapidly between yeah spoken by a guy who's tried to do that like on thursday

[00:34:34] night trying to bounce back and forth between amazon prime you're stuck yeah and then he says

[00:34:39] i want one pass and i want every game kind of like you know cable was back in 2014 i don't

[00:34:45] want to sound like an old man even though i understand i'm sounding like an old man get

[00:34:49] off my lawn but it wasn't very long ago that i could sit down on my couch with one freaking remote

[00:34:53] control and find any sporting event i wanted to watch sport leagues need to understand that in

[00:34:59] an effort to squeeze every dollar out of their fans they are burdening their wallets and driving

[00:35:03] them bonkers we're all paying more and getting less that's a recipe for disaster thank you clay

[00:35:08] travis that's really well said and except for the nfl and college football attendance in person at

[00:35:16] games is decreasing yeah so at some point the teams are going to have to figure out a way to regain

[00:35:23] the eyeballs that used to be coming through the turnstiles and maybe the golden ticket is the

[00:35:27] way to do that and i and i'll tell you in my case if you said you got a golden ticket and you're

[00:35:32] gonna get all of your detroit teams through this golden ticket yeah i would drop youtube tv i would

[00:35:39] get rid i mean i need that for watch espn i would need to find a way to get golf channel and

[00:35:44] watch golf tournaments that's really about it yeah um so i think he's onto something for sure

[00:35:49] yeah and if you watch your favorite team four or five times your i argue you're gonna be more likely

[00:35:55] to drop some coin and go to a game in person yes i would agree more likely yeah good very good holy

[00:36:00] discontent my holy discontent is my golf game it's terrible and i say that because not because

[00:36:05] you all should care but because a couple of months ago we officially christened for my

[00:36:11] professional for my show and i tv show that i host michigan golf live we christened a golf simulator

[00:36:17] studio and so i've been hitting a lot of balls been practicing a lot on the simulator it's it's as

[00:36:21] realistic as anything and today was my first outdoor round and it reminds me of a joke my holy

[00:36:28] discontent is going to come wrapped in the form of a joke i'm also losing my voice

[00:36:32] steven writes one of my favorite comedians he's the monotone comedian he says yeah when i

[00:36:36] was growing up i worked at a planetarium and we had a softball team and we would play against

[00:36:42] other planetariums and we weren't very good and so to learn where to stand our outfielders would

[00:36:48] position themselves under different planets and i was in left field and i always stood under neptune

[00:36:53] and then one day we had an away game and it was outdoors and we were way too far apart

[00:37:01] that's how i felt today that's really fun i came in with great confidence and all of a

[00:37:05] sudden i was like this is very different i'm outside and it doesn't translate as so the simulator has

[00:37:12] been a detriment to your actual golf game it's been a or would you have been in this this funk

[00:37:18] regardless of having the simulator all winter probably yeah probably and it was mostly a mental

[00:37:23] thing and and i just didn't play well one of the gentlemen i played with who's a wonderful

[00:37:27] guy we walked 18 holes he's 80 and he beat me oh and he enjoyed that greatly yeah so i should

[00:37:34] make him that my that guy but instead it's part of my holy disc intense right now this minute today

[00:37:42] this week i am the man this is our that guy segment where we praise somebody who's doing

[00:37:50] it really well and i'll lead us off scottie shuffler is the hottest golfer on the planet unless

[00:37:55] you count nely corda who has just won her fifth consecutive lpga tour event which is crazy like

[00:38:03] this is back to the days of tiger and onica sorenstem being that dominant on their tours yeah

[00:38:10] scottie shuffler won the masters he just finished actually this morning because of a rain delay he

[00:38:16] won the the heritage over in hilton head at the masters he won 3.5 million dollars today he

[00:38:23] won four million dollars that's a pretty good week it's a good week score at home but he was

[00:38:28] asked in the media center following the masters how he kept his perspective on all of this success and

[00:38:35] all of these things and how he handled pressure and golf and he said one of his good friends that he

[00:38:42] called the night before to come to his rented home in augusta to stay with him because he didn't

[00:38:48] want to be by himself they came in and they had a devotional time and one of his friends not

[00:38:53] like jubbs friends but one of his good friends reminded him scottie your victory was already won on the cross

[00:39:00] yeah what you do for your living is not related to to that eternity and that blessing and we'll

[00:39:06] talk about that a little bit more in our three minute message but so he went on to talk about

[00:39:10] that and he completely confounded the gathered media in the mass i mean that's not common talk

[00:39:16] when you say my victory was won on the cross and so he took all kinds of grief on

[00:39:20] of course on twitter and all those stuff but the reality was he he made a very clear point

[00:39:27] what happened during a golf tournament was not his identity basis his foundation and by the way

[00:39:34] i'm not in the business of promoting other podcasts on this podcast but there is a

[00:39:39] a great new podcast for those of you who also like golf it's hosted by web simpson and ben

[00:39:45] crane and it's called bible caddy and on most weeks they do about a half hour bible study

[00:39:51] and that's really it they talk a little bit about golf but mostly bible study but last week they had

[00:39:55] scottie on for about 45 minutes and they talked in true golf geek level about the masters and

[00:40:02] strategy and moments and things like that but they ended with him fully explaining his testimony

[00:40:08] and what that victory was won on the cross meant i'm telling you it's really really good

[00:40:13] even if you don't really like golf that much listen to that episode just go to the last

[00:40:18] 15 minutes and you'll be really blessed by all of it so scottie's my that guy for sure

[00:40:22] that's awesome i don't even know how to follow that up other than i'm going to go back into the

[00:40:28] meaningless world of sports um and i'm going to talk about the ufl i'm going to give a shout

[00:40:34] out to the united football league which was the merger of the xfl and what was it usfl or

[00:40:41] yes i think so yeah and i'm really sure and i love watching their games because of all the

[00:40:48] innovations in technology they're the laboratory for all this yeah it's pretty cool like you

[00:40:54] they're like okay it's fourth and 16 inches because they have a little chip in the ball or

[00:40:58] whatever and they're measuring like that they don't ever bring the chains out to measure they just

[00:41:04] spot the ball and then they use the technology like shot spot in tennis or like the goal line

[00:41:08] technology and soccer to tell you exactly how many inches are left to go for the first down i

[00:41:14] love that some of the innovative rules my favorite one is that if um when you would normally do an

[00:41:20] onside kick you can choose to go fourth and 12 from your own 20 oh it's just more than 12

[00:41:26] yeah so you score let's say you need to score again or whatever you instead of trying to pull

[00:41:30] off an onside kick which never happens you can take the you get one down fourth and 12

[00:41:35] from your own 28 yard line okay and if you convert the first down then you have the ball back

[00:41:40] i actually think that's a pretty cool rule but my favorite thing is how much you can listen in

[00:41:46] to the coaches the players they have these real-time sideline reports so i think we have a

[00:41:53] couple of clips um this first one is Reed Sinit uh who has been you know had a cup of

[00:41:59] coffee with a couple of NFL teams and he's now the quarterback for the Houston Roughnecks

[00:42:02] and i just love him mic'd up as he hands the ball off for his guy running for a touchdown

[00:42:06] on 80 let's hunt oh

[00:42:13] good job avery sweet job yes boys yes good job good job it's high

[00:42:22] good job baby good job just cackling and cackling i just love that better than some

[00:42:27] announcer going and he's up the middle 20 yards and he scores yes yeah there's that

[00:42:31] and then they do these real-time like in the moment interviews and you always get great

[00:42:35] stuff when you stick a microphone in front of a guy's face right after he does something

[00:42:38] not a coach but a player a player and so here's a little sideline interview after they had like

[00:42:43] a fumble rusky kind of touchdown for the offensive lineman here's uh the interview with

[00:42:49] him on the bench do you have any idea the impact and what you've done for us fat guys everywhere

[00:42:55] um i know it's all of our dreams i know that we put that fake in and we talked about

[00:43:00] i was just more of a decoy but you know stuff at the fan and i was there so but it was on a it's an

[00:43:08] i love it for fat guys there you go guys i'm putting number one fact i touched on all time

[00:43:13] number one fact i touched on all time i just love it for a fact i love i love they just stick

[00:43:17] the microphone right in your face as you're coming off the field may ask you like the mba is

[00:43:20] doing a little bit of this now with coaches and stuff like that but man i love it real time

[00:43:25] in football fans want immersive experiences yes that's how you get it and so you can only hope that

[00:43:30] some of these ufl things will bleed over into the nfl um yeah that's pretty good we'll see

[00:43:36] we'll wind it up with our three minute message a homer i'd like you to remember matthew seven

[00:43:43] 26 the foolish man who built his house on sound and you remember matthew 21 17

[00:43:54] and he left them and went out of the city in debatony and he lodged there

[00:43:59] yeah think about it indeed and you were you were queued a little bit tipped off a little

[00:44:06] bit to my three minute message when i was talking about scottie schaeffler because he was talking

[00:44:09] about identity uh and where his value is worth really comes from and he talked also in that

[00:44:15] same conversation about how two years ago when he was when he did win the 22 masters but the

[00:44:22] night before the final round so saturday night he was a he was a wreck he was an emotional wreck and

[00:44:29] for those of you who don't follow golf all that much when you're the leader heading into the

[00:44:34] final round you tee off last on sunday which usually is around two o'clock in the afternoon

[00:44:39] which means you get a lot of time to ponder this potentially life changing situation i mean he

[00:44:45] had not yet won a masters and and that is a life changer whether or not it should be it is from

[00:44:50] a career standpoint he was an emotional wreck and his wife he he gets choked up when he tells about

[00:44:58] the moment they had together because she prays for him and she prays god's peace over him

[00:45:03] she prays the benediction may the lord bless you and keep you may make his face to shine upon

[00:45:08] you and be gracious unto you and to grant you his peace his wife prays that over him

[00:45:14] so he talks about that and went on to win and this time around they asked him before after sunday's

[00:45:21] round were you that nervous today coming in that's when he said one of his four friends reminded him

[00:45:27] that his victory has already been won on the cross and the rest of it is just what he does for a

[00:45:32] living and i mean anybody who followed it closely and watches him realizes that nervousness doesn't

[00:45:38] really seem to be a part of his his fiber at all and it's a reminder for all of us you know as we

[00:45:44] kind of talk about things in the context of applying this to our own lives that if you start getting a

[00:45:50] lot of anxiety you start getting worked up you're stressed out you're wondering which way is up

[00:45:56] maybe it's because of a job that's gone in the wrong direction or maybe you got let go at a time

[00:46:01] when you did not see that coming perhaps you have some family issues or some health issues

[00:46:07] whatever it is please remember that for followers of jesus your victory has already been won it doesn't

[00:46:15] mean the road is smooth there's speed bumps there's there's a lot of difficulty along the way but

[00:46:20] remembering how it all turns out is a is a pretty cool go-to in those moments where you were

[00:46:27] you kind of momentarily forgot that part so my encouragement to you along with listening

[00:46:32] to scottie share his own testimony on that bible caddy podcast and hearing it in his own words with

[00:46:37] his own emotions is to just kind of make maybe it's a written note literally maybe it's a post-it note

[00:46:44] on the dashboard of your car my victory has already been won and maybe it helps to diminish the

[00:46:52] anxiety that you're dealing with um and if we can bring that out of scottie's testimony then

[00:46:58] that's a double win you just don't get a green jacket for your part of it but

[00:47:02] it's pretty cool stuff and to see a humble guy his caddy by the way ted scott we're working on

[00:47:07] getting him on this program is a wonderful follower of christ and a really good influence in

[00:47:12] scottie's life so yeah what's awesome about that bill is when we have our identity rooted in

[00:47:18] christ it's like the excellence that god has put in us is free to come out yeah right yeah

[00:47:25] and so who knows what that excellence is in scottie's case it's golf right but whatever it is that

[00:47:30] jesus or that god has put inside of you if you can remember that the victory's already been won and

[00:47:36] that your identity is rooted in him then you're free to live into that excellence in whatever arena

[00:47:41] of life it is beautiful beautiful stuff hey special thanks to alex roush for joining us from
