[00:00:00] I couldn't even have dreamt of this. Like, this moment is so cool and, you know, I'm taking it in stride and I'm having fun with it.
[00:00:06] The following is a presentation of Hobson Media.
[00:00:10] Woohoo!
[00:00:19] This is the Church Pew Sports Podcast, featuring a group of pastors delivering bombastic takes on sports, life, and faith.
[00:00:30] Take a knee.
[00:00:31] Man, it's hard to break us now. It's hard to break us. As a matter of fact, you ain't gonna do it.
[00:00:35] Lend an ear.
[00:00:36] These are some of the best questions I've had, I have to tell you that straight up.
[00:00:40] As the Church Pew Sports Podcast begins.
[00:00:43] It's great father-son bonding.
[00:00:45] Kegs and eggs and football, let's go.
[00:00:48] Kegs and eggs and football.
[00:00:52] And with that, we welcome you into another edition of Church Pew Sports.
[00:00:55] So good to have you with us as we connect the world of sports to matters of faith and life and have a really fun time doing it.
[00:01:02] Bill Hobson here, along with Pastor Paul Miller, who joins us from his headquarters in Minneapolis.
[00:01:08] And by the way, just an encouragement slash plea with all of you right up front to please hit the subscribe button wherever it is you're listening to the podcast and share the link with somebody else.
[00:01:20] That's the only way we're going to grow this audience.
[00:01:22] In a universe of over 2 million podcasts, it's kind of hard to stand out.
[00:01:27] So we could use your help doing that.
[00:01:29] And Paul, right off the bat, I'm going to offer you a huge bonus of 48 bonus points.
[00:01:37] If you can tell me who said the few words we heard in the teaser for six seconds long at the beginning of this.
[00:01:44] Any idea whatsoever?
[00:01:46] I was thinking about that as you played that, Bill.
[00:01:49] I have no clue at all.
[00:01:51] I'm going to give it to you one more time.
[00:01:52] I couldn't even have dreamt of this.
[00:01:54] Like this moment is so cool.
[00:01:56] And I'm taking it in stride and I'm having fun with it.
[00:01:59] Is that the lion's kicker?
[00:02:01] Oh, nice pull.
[00:02:03] Yes.
[00:02:03] That is the lion's kicker.
[00:02:05] I just don't look at it as pressure.
[00:02:07] It's one of those incredible moments of time that we'll get into here in the moments ahead.
[00:02:12] We are going to talk today about not just a little bit of lions, but also in the college realm,
[00:02:20] what I think was a seismic event and potentially sets a really bizarre precedent that took place in the game between Texas and Georgia.
[00:02:30] Then we'll move forward to this weekend's rivalry between the Wolverines and the Spartans.
[00:02:36] And we'll talk a little lions and we'll even eventually get to some very strange decision-making going on in the WNBA.
[00:02:44] But before we get any further, so excited that we have a special guest with us tonight.
[00:02:48] And Paul, I'm going to let you introduce him.
[00:02:50] Yes, we are welcoming to the Church Pew Sports Podcast my new friend, Adam Glomboski.
[00:02:56] I met Adam last weekend.
[00:02:58] I was at Cooperstown Bible Camp in the middle of North Dakota.
[00:03:06] And I can't really describe for you where in North Dakota I was, but I can tell you that it was beautiful.
[00:03:12] And the camp setting was awesome and we were there for a youth camp.
[00:03:15] And I walked into the dining hall for one of the meals wearing some Ohio State gear.
[00:03:21] And I was immediately accosted by the director of the camp.
[00:03:26] Accosted?
[00:03:26] He refused me service and he threatened me.
[00:03:29] I did not.
[00:03:30] I did.
[00:03:30] Don't even.
[00:03:32] Okay.
[00:03:33] Don't even.
[00:03:34] Okay.
[00:03:34] So I just want to welcome you, Adam, to the show.
[00:03:36] And it does Bill's heart good to know that we have a little Wolverine thing going here for the conversation.
[00:03:43] But we do have a little hazing ritual that we take all first-time guests through.
[00:03:46] I didn't tell you about this ahead of time, but it's pretty easy.
[00:03:50] We just have one question for you.
[00:03:52] We would love all our listeners to get to know you a little bit.
[00:03:54] And so the question is, who are the teams that you follow?
[00:03:57] I think obviously Michigan might be on the list, but who are the teams that you follow?
[00:04:02] Any sport, any level that you follow in such a way that other sports fans or your family or whatever look at you and go,
[00:04:13] what is up with that guy?
[00:04:14] He needs to relax a little bit.
[00:04:15] So tell us about your irrational sports loyalties.
[00:04:19] Irrational sports loyalties.
[00:04:21] Great.
[00:04:22] No, I'm a, yeah, Michigan through and through.
[00:04:25] So Detroit Lions for football.
[00:04:28] Detroit Tigers.
[00:04:29] Oh my gosh.
[00:04:30] I wish we were so close.
[00:04:32] Detroit Tigers this year.
[00:04:35] Detroit Red Wings.
[00:04:36] Huge Detroit Red Wings fan.
[00:04:38] A great win the other night.
[00:04:40] I mean, yeah.
[00:04:41] Won nothing, but I think we could have done better.
[00:04:44] And then, yeah, I'm a U of M fan through and through.
[00:04:47] Do not like the Spartans.
[00:04:49] Absolutely.
[00:04:50] In Christian brotherly love, despise the Ohio State,
[00:04:56] whatever they're called, the Buckeyes or whatever.
[00:05:00] Do not like them.
[00:05:02] But yeah, Michigan guy through and through.
[00:05:04] And then I married an Oakey.
[00:05:06] And so started to follow the, follow OU.
[00:05:10] And kind of getting a little bit of there.
[00:05:12] But yeah, mainly it is Michigan teams all the way.
[00:05:15] Where do the Detroit roots come from for you?
[00:05:19] I'm born and raised Michigan.
[00:05:21] So I was born in Port Huron, Michigan.
[00:05:24] And played a little hockey, played a little basketball, or baseball, not basketball.
[00:05:28] I'm 6'9".
[00:05:29] Paul knows that.
[00:05:30] But I'm not a tiny U of M fan.
[00:05:33] I'm a pretty big U of M fan.
[00:05:37] So yeah, Michigan through and through, man.
[00:05:39] Adam, that makes you the second tallest guest that we've had on Church Pew behind Kurt David,
[00:05:44] who played some professional basketball at 6'10", or 6'11".
[00:05:48] And the fact that there is a Maize and Blue representation in North Dakota,
[00:05:52] I think will be encouragement to our other cast member, David Collins, who's checking in with us.
[00:05:58] David, did you know that the Maize and Blue could actually be found
[00:06:01] in the farthest reaches of our nation, like North Dakota?
[00:06:06] You can find them anywhere.
[00:06:07] I've been overseas.
[00:06:08] I've been in Thailand.
[00:06:09] I've been in Japan.
[00:06:10] Seen Michigan hats.
[00:06:12] You can find them anywhere, baby.
[00:06:14] Go Blue.
[00:06:15] We like that.
[00:06:15] But you have a scarlet curtain behind you, which just throws me off a little bit.
[00:06:20] I call it red.
[00:06:21] I like that.
[00:06:22] I appreciate that.
[00:06:24] Okay, let's get into this.
[00:06:26] First of all, let's start with what was, I think, the biggest weekend headline,
[00:06:30] the big showdown between Texas and Georgia,
[00:06:33] and the bizarre happenings that unfolded in the third quarter.
[00:06:37] Everybody thinks that this, not everybody, a lot of people think that this happened,
[00:06:40] like in the final moments of the game.
[00:06:42] It really didn't.
[00:06:44] Because, and you guys are welcome to correct my recap, but up until halftime,
[00:06:49] Georgia was boat racing Texas.
[00:06:52] They were absolutely dominating everything.
[00:06:55] Although I think we had kind of the feeling that there would be some sort of a rally made
[00:06:59] by the Longhorns.
[00:07:01] And then with like two minutes and 40 seconds to go in the third quarter,
[00:07:06] on a really important play, Texas does this.
[00:07:11] Bring some pressure against back, who stands and delivers on the sideline.
[00:07:15] It's intercepted.
[00:07:17] Picked up right down at the nine.
[00:07:23] There is a flag on the field back at the secondary.
[00:07:28] So hold on.
[00:07:29] I wonder if Smith, it got tied up.
[00:07:32] Did Smith push?
[00:07:33] Or is it defensive holding, as Kirby's saying?
[00:07:36] Definitely contact at the top of that route.
[00:07:39] Matt Leffler talking about it.
[00:07:41] Kirby's pretty confident it was a hold and a gate,
[00:07:43] but would have been an enormous electric takeaway.
[00:07:47] I can't wait for Bill to take a peek at this one,
[00:07:50] to see at the top of the route, if it's defensive holding or offensive.
[00:07:53] Number seven.
[00:07:55] Baldy plays with a spot and foul with an automatic first down.
[00:07:58] So instead of Texas football first and goal,
[00:08:02] Georgia's going to be set up across the 40.
[00:08:05] They're showing the replay.
[00:08:06] The top of the route, you tell me.
[00:08:09] The defender has a right to get in front of him.
[00:08:12] I don't see him holding him.
[00:08:13] I see the offensive player as much attacking him.
[00:08:16] Take that away from the horns having that big turnover.
[00:08:21] Georgia keeps the ball in the first down.
[00:08:23] Okay, so that's what unfolds, by the way, in Texas, right?
[00:08:28] So the home crowd, not so terribly pleased.
[00:08:32] It was, I think, by any fan's measure, you know,
[00:08:35] a guy like me and probably like all of you who didn't have any skin in the game,
[00:08:40] it was just a horrendous pass interference call.
[00:08:44] But raise your hand if your team has ever been on the receiving end
[00:08:47] of a horrendous pass interference call,
[00:08:49] and that would pretty much be all of us.
[00:08:52] So what transpires next is, along with all of the booing that you heard,
[00:08:59] the end zone and the student end gets pummeled, littered with water bottles,
[00:09:05] beer cans, and all those.
[00:09:06] I mean, it's basically, you know, short of malice at the palace,
[00:09:10] it's a pretty good crowd disruption.
[00:09:15] And Sarkeesian, the Texas coach, is throwing a fit over on his sidelines.
[00:09:19] I can't really say as I blame him.
[00:09:21] But here's what unfolds next, and then the three of us,
[00:09:24] the four of us can talk about this.
[00:09:25] Are they talking about the bottles right now being thrown on the field?
[00:09:31] And are they trying to get the – what do you think this discussion is about?
[00:09:36] It could be a discussion about that.
[00:09:38] Personally, I'd leave it alone.
[00:09:40] You're going to have things like this happen once in a great while.
[00:09:44] Leave it alone, move on with the game.
[00:09:46] There was no defensive pass interference.
[00:09:49] Oh, my goodness.
[00:09:49] The ball will be at the nine-yard line.
[00:09:51] Kirby's smoking it.
[00:09:52] I believe it.
[00:09:53] So, Bill LeMagne, a discussion.
[00:09:55] They have changed their call, which is an enormous moment in this game.
[00:09:59] Yeah.
[00:10:01] Are you surprised they changed it, Bill?
[00:10:03] Yeah, I'm surprised.
[00:10:04] I'd like to know how it came about, who stepped up,
[00:10:07] who came in to talk about it, because it's not reviewable.
[00:10:11] It would have to be an on-field decision.
[00:10:15] Now, they – they took a while to do that.
[00:10:17] Now, we saw him talking.
[00:10:19] We didn't know what was this about, where are the balls located after all the action.
[00:10:23] I knew Kirby – I knew this would light his fuse.
[00:10:27] Well, fuse was lit.
[00:10:28] All right, boys, what did we learn from this episode?
[00:10:31] David Collins.
[00:10:33] I mean, it's hard not to think that it was the delay from all the bottles being thrown onto the field
[00:10:40] that gave them the extra time to discuss what was going on,
[00:10:44] which a lot of people are saying kind of sets a bad precedent for the future.
[00:10:50] If you look at, you know, your team needs a call looked at,
[00:10:54] and all of a sudden you start chucking bottles or doing something,
[00:10:56] a streaker runs out onto the field.
[00:10:58] Anything to give your team more time for the refs to look at a play.
[00:11:04] It was just a really bizarre moment.
[00:11:06] I don't think it's going to lead to anything,
[00:11:08] but that's been kind of the national discourse is,
[00:11:10] oh, my goodness, this is the precedent that it's setting and all that.
[00:11:14] I think it was a bad moment for the refs.
[00:11:17] I think it was a bad call initially, but at the same time,
[00:11:21] it's one of those things where I just think you've got to stick with what you called on the field
[00:11:24] because there's not, you know, you're not, like they said,
[00:11:27] it's not something that's reviewable,
[00:11:29] so it was something that was literally just changed by the refs on the field,
[00:11:33] and they only had the time to review it and think about it once this,
[00:11:38] you know, these bottles started flying onto the field.
[00:11:39] It just turns into a situation where can that be something that teams use to exploit things
[00:11:45] or fans use to try to exploit things?
[00:11:48] I honestly don't think it's going to turn into that,
[00:11:50] but it does set a bad precedent for what could potentially come.
[00:11:54] It's the ultimate in fan involvement.
[00:11:57] If you want first-person immersion into a game,
[00:12:01] Adam, when you saw how all of that unfolded,
[00:12:04] what were your thoughts as a nonpartisan viewer?
[00:12:08] Well, first off, I mean, you have the score.
[00:12:13] Okay.
[00:12:14] It was totally lopsided at that time, right?
[00:12:17] Third quarter.
[00:12:18] Okay.
[00:12:19] After listening to quite a few different takes on this,
[00:12:23] one of the takes that I came away was the question was,
[00:12:27] did the officials ultimately get the call right when they reversed it?
[00:12:32] Was that the true call?
[00:12:35] Was it a really defensive pass interference?
[00:12:39] If you go back and you rewatch it again,
[00:12:41] I mean, there wasn't much at all,
[00:12:44] and I will echo what David said,
[00:12:46] because I feel like as much as you want to think that,
[00:12:50] that it won't happen again,
[00:12:52] that, oh, hey, we can, we can throw bottles.
[00:12:54] We can throw trash.
[00:12:55] We can throw bodies onto the field.
[00:12:57] And they will ultimately change the call our way.
[00:13:01] There's some form of thinking, oh, maybe we could,
[00:13:04] maybe we can sway the officials into the direction that we feel like it
[00:13:09] should have, it should have happened.
[00:13:11] I think it sets a bad precedence for future, for future games.
[00:13:17] Not even when they're that close though.
[00:13:20] Yeah.
[00:13:20] It's almost like, like, I agree with you, bro.
[00:13:22] I think the, the outcome was they got the call correct in my opinion.
[00:13:28] Right.
[00:13:29] But the path they went to, um, went through to get there was, uh,
[00:13:35] if you can figure out a way to,
[00:13:37] to buy the referees some time to discuss their call,
[00:13:40] if you disagree with their call, then maybe, maybe they'll,
[00:13:43] maybe they'll change their minds.
[00:13:44] Like it was interesting to me when he gets back on the microphone,
[00:13:48] whoever the head referee was or head official was,
[00:13:51] he's like after discussion, he didn't say after review.
[00:13:54] He said, after discussion, there was no penalty.
[00:13:59] Um, and so, um, it non-reviewable, whatever I immediately,
[00:14:04] like in my Twitter feed, all the Ohio state stuff,
[00:14:09] all the Ohio state guys that I follow are all talking about, Hey,
[00:14:12] that's what we should have done last week.
[00:14:13] When, uh, when, uh,
[00:14:15] Jeremiah Smith had the call against him and the last drive against Oregon.
[00:14:18] And all of a sudden you immediately go there as a fan.
[00:14:22] I don't know if it will actually come to fruition in future games,
[00:14:27] but I think we might see some creative, um,
[00:14:32] creative implementation of,
[00:14:33] of ways to buy the refs more time to reconsider their decision.
[00:14:37] Let's just, let's just leave it at that.
[00:14:39] David,
[00:14:39] but who was the lions receiver in Dallas on the past interference call that
[00:14:44] was then picked up on the,
[00:14:45] after the face guarding years ago that we're still bitter about when they
[00:14:49] already had marked it off and then came back and just went,
[00:14:51] there's no, there's no interference there.
[00:14:53] Do you remember who was it?
[00:14:54] It was a branded pedigree.
[00:14:55] That's what I thought.
[00:14:57] Branded pedigree.
[00:14:58] And let's not forget, by the way, Paul,
[00:15:00] your Ohio state guys were also had one of the worst pass interference calls
[00:15:06] ever in their favor in my,
[00:15:08] against Miami years ago that got helped them get a national championship.
[00:15:11] So, yeah, I'm not,
[00:15:13] I'm not saying that Ohio state fans are sane or logical at all.
[00:15:18] I'm not.
[00:15:19] Don't hear me saying that.
[00:15:20] I'm just saying that's where they immediately went when the call got
[00:15:23] reversed in the Georgia UT game.
[00:15:25] I think a lot of fan bases kind of had that same reaction, but yeah,
[00:15:29] Bill, going back to what you were just talking about,
[00:15:31] like this is one of those situations.
[00:15:33] That's totally unprecedented.
[00:15:34] That Brandon Pettigrew one was a clear pass interference.
[00:15:37] They marked off the penalty.
[00:15:39] They set the ball.
[00:15:41] They had everything ready to go for play.
[00:15:43] And then all of a sudden without any announcement or anything,
[00:15:45] they just walked the ball back,
[00:15:47] reset it and said it was fourth down.
[00:15:49] Like that was the most bizarre to this day.
[00:15:51] I've never seen anything quite like that.
[00:15:55] But that was ridiculous.
[00:15:57] What's that, Adam?
[00:15:58] I really, really have to relive it.
[00:16:00] I don't want to relive it.
[00:16:02] It's still there.
[00:16:03] We got, we got, we got back at the Cowboys, you know,
[00:16:06] a couple of weeks ago,
[00:16:07] which that was exactly what I expected from, from that.
[00:16:11] Adam,
[00:16:11] I'm still occasionally tweeting out Decker reported.
[00:16:14] So we have very long memories in this world.
[00:16:18] Although I will say this, Paul,
[00:16:21] I don't profess to know every subsection,
[00:16:24] subparagraph of the rule book,
[00:16:26] but I'm not aware of the college football rule book allowing for the
[00:16:33] overturning of a pass interference call after,
[00:16:36] by the way,
[00:16:37] it had also been marked off.
[00:16:39] They had spotted the ball for play and only during cleanup on aisle three,
[00:16:43] did they decide to have a discussion and,
[00:16:46] and put everything.
[00:16:48] I mean, just set the world on fire.
[00:16:50] So, you know,
[00:16:51] you get the,
[00:16:51] you get the explanation from the sec about its officials,
[00:16:54] which is as useful as getting an apology from the big 10,
[00:16:58] which means absolutely nothing.
[00:16:59] After the game,
[00:17:01] Kirby smart,
[00:17:02] of course,
[00:17:02] and they,
[00:17:03] and by the way,
[00:17:03] Georgia,
[00:17:04] if you're not keeping track at home,
[00:17:05] Georgia did win the game.
[00:17:07] So in the end,
[00:17:08] I think the right team won the game,
[00:17:10] even though in that little exchange,
[00:17:13] Georgia got the short,
[00:17:14] short end of the stick from a procedural standpoint,
[00:17:19] probably the right outcome of that play was,
[00:17:22] was finally carried out.
[00:17:23] Here's what Kirby had to say on the field after the game.
[00:17:26] And then I'll play his press conference soundbite.
[00:17:28] Nobody gave us a chance.
[00:17:30] Your whole network doubted us.
[00:17:32] Nobody believed us.
[00:17:33] And then they tried to rob us with calls in this place.
[00:17:37] And these guys are so resilient.
[00:17:39] You know what I mean?
[00:17:40] We talked about intent.
[00:17:41] What was our intent when we walked on the field?
[00:17:43] Our intent was not to take pictures,
[00:17:45] not to do all the superstar stuff.
[00:17:47] Our intent,
[00:17:48] our intent was to eat.
[00:17:50] Our intent was to eat.
[00:17:51] I will,
[00:17:52] we'll deal in a moment with Kirby claiming to be the underdog and
[00:17:55] nobody gave him a chance here in a moment,
[00:17:56] but here is his,
[00:17:58] in the press conference room thoughts about the precedent that was set.
[00:18:02] He just said,
[00:18:02] the guy,
[00:18:03] the guy got it wrong.
[00:18:05] Or the guy called it on the wrong guy,
[00:18:08] which it took him a long time to realize that,
[00:18:11] you know?
[00:18:11] So it's one of those things that I don't know what I'm allowed to say and not
[00:18:14] say.
[00:18:15] So I won't comment because I want to respect the wishes of the SEC office.
[00:18:19] But I will say that now we've set a precedent that if you throw a bunch of
[00:18:23] stuff on the field and endanger athletes,
[00:18:26] that you've got a chance to get your call reversed.
[00:18:28] And that's unfortunate because to me,
[00:18:31] that's dangerous.
[00:18:32] That's not what we want.
[00:18:33] And that's not criticizing officials.
[00:18:36] He's being very careful not to end up with his pocketbook getting dinged.
[00:18:40] I think in all of this,
[00:18:41] at least he didn't end his comments with,
[00:18:43] cause in the SEC,
[00:18:45] it just matters more.
[00:18:46] Right.
[00:18:47] I was kind of hoping he'd end it with who's got it better than us,
[00:18:50] but it didn't,
[00:18:50] didn't work out that way.
[00:18:52] Okay.
[00:18:52] So David,
[00:18:53] the sympathetic positioning of Kirby smart with Georgia as the,
[00:18:58] as the underdog,
[00:18:59] the,
[00:18:59] the David against Texas is Goliath moving into all of this.
[00:19:04] I saw you squirm there in your zoom window.
[00:19:06] And when he said,
[00:19:07] nobody gave us a chance.
[00:19:08] Yeah.
[00:19:09] I mean,
[00:19:11] you've won two out of the last three national championship.
[00:19:13] I just don't like at some point,
[00:19:16] one of these teams has to not use that line.
[00:19:19] It's,
[00:19:19] it's,
[00:19:20] it's just patently ridiculous and absurd at this point.
[00:19:23] Nobody believed in them.
[00:19:25] Nobody.
[00:19:26] I picked them to win.
[00:19:27] I believed in them.
[00:19:28] Like,
[00:19:28] I don't,
[00:19:29] I don't understand this concept of no one believed in us.
[00:19:32] And then they tried to steal it from us.
[00:19:34] Kirby,
[00:19:35] you're great.
[00:19:36] You've won two out of the last three national,
[00:19:38] you've taken the sport from Nick Saban.
[00:19:40] You are now the Nick Saban.
[00:19:42] We all believe in Georgia.
[00:19:44] So stop it.
[00:19:45] It's ridiculous.
[00:19:47] David.
[00:19:48] I'm wondering though,
[00:19:48] if he was mentioning this because college game day,
[00:19:52] every single one of them picked Texas over Georgia,
[00:19:55] every single one of them.
[00:19:56] And then Lee Corso,
[00:19:58] when they did that fireworks,
[00:19:59] smoking all this stuff,
[00:20:00] Texas,
[00:20:01] every single one of them back,
[00:20:03] Pat McAfee was all over,
[00:20:07] all over Texas when they were getting ready to do the picks.
[00:20:10] So I'm wondering if that's kind of where the,
[00:20:12] it was coming from.
[00:20:14] I think that is what it is.
[00:20:16] It's,
[00:20:16] it's national media people like hyping Texas.
[00:20:19] Like they always do.
[00:20:20] Sure.
[00:20:20] But the,
[00:20:21] but the reality is you ask just about anybody on the street that,
[00:20:25] you know,
[00:20:25] that likes college football.
[00:20:27] Hey,
[00:20:27] do you believe Georgia's really,
[00:20:28] really good?
[00:20:29] Yeah.
[00:20:30] Yeah.
[00:20:30] I mean,
[00:20:30] it's not,
[00:20:31] it's not really that much of a con it's,
[00:20:33] it's yeah,
[00:20:33] it's the talking heads,
[00:20:35] et cetera.
[00:20:35] And then,
[00:20:36] you know,
[00:20:36] the,
[00:20:36] the Texas head gear,
[00:20:38] but the reality is,
[00:20:39] I mean,
[00:20:39] I look at it and I like,
[00:20:41] you look at Texas,
[00:20:42] you look at Bama,
[00:20:43] you look at Tennessee,
[00:20:44] you look at Georgia,
[00:20:45] those teams have,
[00:20:46] they're all equal as far as their talent goes and their athletes go.
[00:20:50] Any one of them could win any week that they play.
[00:20:52] So I look at it and say,
[00:20:55] maybe you don't believe in them that they're the best team in the country.
[00:20:58] Fine.
[00:20:59] I mean,
[00:20:59] I still think they probably are,
[00:21:00] but at the same time,
[00:21:02] you still have to believe that they are one of the two to three best teams in
[00:21:07] the country.
[00:21:07] And if that's the case,
[00:21:08] then people believe in you.
[00:21:10] Yes.
[00:21:11] Yes.
[00:21:12] That's very well said.
[00:21:13] And by the way,
[00:21:16] those teams,
[00:21:17] after they win,
[00:21:19] a conference title or a national title,
[00:21:22] have figured out a way to restock the roster for all of the players that
[00:21:29] end up going to play at the next level.
[00:21:33] As we move on to talk about the big interstate Paul Bunyan trophy game this
[00:21:39] week,
[00:21:40] one of the teams still has partially empty cupboards and they,
[00:21:44] they aren't really all that good.
[00:21:45] That'd be the team in East Lansing.
[00:21:47] The team from Ann Arbor,
[00:21:49] my alma mater coming off of a national championship.
[00:21:52] Adam seemed to,
[00:21:55] I don't,
[00:21:55] I can't say they didn't think about the cupboard being bare,
[00:21:59] but the cupboard is bare,
[00:22:00] whether they thought about it or not.
[00:22:02] And it is a mess.
[00:22:03] Can anybody on,
[00:22:04] in fact,
[00:22:05] David,
[00:22:05] I wondered if you were going to join us on the podcast tonight,
[00:22:07] because you might be down at the open auditions for quarterback.
[00:22:10] I think you've still got something left in the arm down there.
[00:22:13] So how can somebody in Ann Arbor,
[00:22:16] please play quarterback.
[00:22:18] Yeah.
[00:22:19] I mean,
[00:22:19] I mean,
[00:22:20] you're starting to see it that it taught,
[00:22:22] they talked about Michigan being back in potentially on that LSU five-star
[00:22:25] quarterback.
[00:22:26] You have Dave Portnoy basically tweeting out,
[00:22:29] don't worry,
[00:22:29] Michigan fans.
[00:22:30] I'm on it.
[00:22:31] Like he's promised multiple millions of dollars to get a quarterback in Ann
[00:22:34] Arbor.
[00:22:35] I think that to me is the biggest failure of,
[00:22:40] of the new regime.
[00:22:41] And,
[00:22:41] and you don't want to look at it and say,
[00:22:44] Hey,
[00:22:44] you've got to oust them now.
[00:22:45] And you've got to make all these changes.
[00:22:47] But the reality that you go into this season with probably the best
[00:22:51] defensive line,
[00:22:52] almost in college football with Kenneth Grant and Mason Graham and Josiah
[00:22:55] Stewart,
[00:22:56] you've got Will Johnson,
[00:22:58] you've got Colson.
[00:22:58] You've got,
[00:22:59] you've got first rounders all up and down this roster still,
[00:23:02] and you're going to waste that year of their talent.
[00:23:05] Those guys are all gone next year.
[00:23:07] You're starting from essentially scratch.
[00:23:09] This was your chance as Sharon Moore to do something and step up and make
[00:23:14] some kind of a statement about here's where we're going in the future.
[00:23:17] We've got it under control and you can't roll out a guy that can throw a
[00:23:20] ball.
[00:23:21] I'm watching Indiana throw the ball.
[00:23:23] I'm watching Illinois throw the ball.
[00:23:24] They've got all the,
[00:23:25] where are these guys?
[00:23:26] Why can't we go get one of these guys?
[00:23:28] Dylan Rayola and all these guys all over the big 10 are flinging the ball
[00:23:33] around and,
[00:23:34] and Michigan's like third and third and three.
[00:23:37] And you're like,
[00:23:37] Oh boy,
[00:23:38] this is going to be a punt because we just don't have a guy that can throw
[00:23:41] it.
[00:23:42] It's,
[00:23:42] it's,
[00:23:42] it's kind of embarrassing that,
[00:23:44] that this it's fallen.
[00:23:46] And I know McCarthy was good,
[00:23:47] but you can't find a single guy that can push the ball eight to 10 yards
[00:23:53] downfield on a consistent basis that can throw a slant that can throw an eight
[00:23:57] yard out.
[00:23:57] You,
[00:23:58] we don't have a guy that can literally throw the ball.
[00:24:01] It's insanity to me.
[00:24:03] And the receiver inventory is not very thick either.
[00:24:06] So Adam out there in North Dakota,
[00:24:08] what's the analysis of the maize and blue as they prepare for the green and
[00:24:13] white.
[00:24:14] Oh man.
[00:24:16] I'll tell you what I knew coming into this year,
[00:24:19] just thinking,
[00:24:20] you know,
[00:24:20] we lost so many,
[00:24:21] my,
[00:24:22] my biggest question along with what David was talking about was how are we
[00:24:27] going to fix the QB situation?
[00:24:29] That's a big problem.
[00:24:30] I mean,
[00:24:30] just in last,
[00:24:31] last week's game,
[00:24:33] mind you,
[00:24:34] I'm also the cook here at camp as well.
[00:24:35] So I'm cooking while I'm watching the game.
[00:24:37] So I'm watching it.
[00:24:38] Every time I look up at the screen,
[00:24:40] why is it that the ball is hitting the ground?
[00:24:42] We can't even get the ball to our receivers.
[00:24:44] And so I looked that up.
[00:24:46] I don't know if anybody,
[00:24:46] any of you caught it or not,
[00:24:47] but the question of why didn't Sharon Moore visit the transfer portal for
[00:24:53] another QB.
[00:24:54] And what was his response?
[00:24:55] I can't remember what his response was,
[00:24:56] but we got it covered.
[00:24:58] We got something covered.
[00:24:59] Then you look at it.
[00:24:59] It's like,
[00:24:59] there's nothing.
[00:25:01] There's absolutely nothing.
[00:25:03] And that worries me because MSU,
[00:25:06] it should be an easy win.
[00:25:08] It should be.
[00:25:09] I don't think it,
[00:25:10] I think they're not going to make it as easy as,
[00:25:11] as I think it is.
[00:25:12] But I came into this year already thinking,
[00:25:15] man,
[00:25:15] what are we going to be like three and something?
[00:25:17] Or can we even pull out three wins in the,
[00:25:19] in the year?
[00:25:21] I don't know guys.
[00:25:22] I just,
[00:25:23] it's been one of those,
[00:25:25] you know,
[00:25:25] it's a reversal.
[00:25:26] My lions are doing fantastic.
[00:25:29] My university of Michigan is just,
[00:25:31] oh,
[00:25:32] so sad.
[00:25:33] But,
[00:25:33] but Adam,
[00:25:34] you absolutely nailed it.
[00:25:35] You said going into this season,
[00:25:37] you were worried about the quarterback situation going into the season.
[00:25:40] I was worried about this quarterback situation.
[00:25:42] Why going into the season was Sharon more,
[00:25:45] not worried about this quarterback situation.
[00:25:47] That's the frustrating thing.
[00:25:48] We can see it.
[00:25:49] And we're just fans.
[00:25:50] Now we're going to go play.
[00:25:51] If we had childs that Sparty has,
[00:25:54] we'd be much better offensively.
[00:25:56] Like we,
[00:25:56] anything other than what we had coming into the season.
[00:25:59] And this team could actually be pretty decent,
[00:26:02] but instead.
[00:26:04] Yeah.
[00:26:05] I think we've got,
[00:26:06] I might be,
[00:26:07] I might be tripping here.
[00:26:08] I had this little conversation with Paul a little bit because we had,
[00:26:12] we had a bye week last week.
[00:26:13] Okay.
[00:26:14] Why didn't we figure things out over this bye week?
[00:26:19] I don't understand.
[00:26:20] Cause then going into the next game,
[00:26:21] it's almost like you had a full two weeks to figure out some,
[00:26:26] you know,
[00:26:27] we don't have a really good quarterback,
[00:26:28] but to figure something out,
[00:26:30] why not throw Jaden Davis out there?
[00:26:32] Just,
[00:26:32] just what I'm wondering.
[00:26:34] That's what I was wondering.
[00:26:35] Why not?
[00:26:35] Why?
[00:26:36] And now the questions are starting to circulate and we're what halfway,
[00:26:40] not even much,
[00:26:40] halfway through.
[00:26:42] Is he the right coach?
[00:26:43] Did,
[00:26:44] did he,
[00:26:44] was he given a little too much responsibility?
[00:26:46] And was he even ready?
[00:26:47] Because if you think back,
[00:26:48] remember when,
[00:26:49] uh,
[00:26:50] uh,
[00:26:50] when,
[00:26:50] when Jim Harbaugh had hit,
[00:26:52] had to fulfill his suspension responsibilities,
[00:26:55] Sharon Moore filled,
[00:26:56] filled in.
[00:26:57] And everybody's like,
[00:26:58] Oh,
[00:26:58] he's,
[00:26:59] he's the bee's knees.
[00:26:59] He's going to take over.
[00:27:01] We know Jim's going to go to the NFL.
[00:27:03] We know that.
[00:27:05] So here,
[00:27:06] here comes this guy,
[00:27:06] you know,
[00:27:07] we got,
[00:27:07] we got him.
[00:27:07] Was it too much responsibility right out front for someone who was even ready
[00:27:13] to take over the head coaching position?
[00:27:15] Yeah.
[00:27:16] And,
[00:27:16] and not only that,
[00:27:17] but we saw what he was last year.
[00:27:19] JJ McCarthy through eight weeks of the season was the betting favorite to win
[00:27:23] the Heisman because his passing numbers were so great.
[00:27:26] Sharon Moore took over for the last four games of the regular season,
[00:27:30] including the big 10 championship game.
[00:27:32] And what happened?
[00:27:32] We turned into a completely different team that ran the ball and only threw
[00:27:36] when we had to,
[00:27:37] it turned,
[00:27:38] he showed you what he was at the end of last season.
[00:27:41] JJ McCarthy went from betting favorite to not even on the Heisman odds by
[00:27:44] the end of the season.
[00:27:45] And we won the championship.
[00:27:46] And I'm thankful for that.
[00:27:47] And I love what we did last year,
[00:27:49] but he showed you what he was.
[00:27:51] And then he comes into this year without a JJ McCarthy.
[00:27:54] And now what?
[00:27:56] Like if Mullings doesn't break a 60 yarder against USC,
[00:27:59] we lose that game too.
[00:28:01] Like it's,
[00:28:01] it's just,
[00:28:02] it's frustrating because it's things that any fan can see,
[00:28:05] but we don't get to make any of those decisions.
[00:28:08] Of course.
[00:28:09] Like I said,
[00:28:10] the biggest question now is,
[00:28:11] is he the right guy for the team?
[00:28:14] Or is this just still one of those,
[00:28:17] it's too early to make a critical decision for the University of Michigan?
[00:28:22] You know what I mean?
[00:28:22] We dropped what?
[00:28:25] I'm trying to think we were what?
[00:28:28] Where'd we drop?
[00:28:29] I can't even find ourselves.
[00:28:30] No,
[00:28:31] we were at 10 at one point,
[00:28:32] which was laughable.
[00:28:33] That was silly.
[00:28:33] Yeah.
[00:28:34] And,
[00:28:34] and then all of a sudden it's like,
[00:28:35] we're not even in the top 25.
[00:28:37] No,
[00:28:37] we shouldn't be.
[00:28:38] Well,
[00:28:38] of course I don't know,
[00:28:40] not at all.
[00:28:41] Yeah.
[00:28:41] So my question is,
[00:28:43] is the cupboard more bare at quarterback or at receiver?
[00:28:48] Do these,
[00:28:49] do these not great quarterbacks have targets to throw to that are getting open?
[00:28:55] I'm not really sure.
[00:28:57] There's a game breaking receiver who's being underutilized on this team.
[00:29:02] When I,
[00:29:02] when I get a chance to see the,
[00:29:04] the wider shots,
[00:29:05] not the all 22s,
[00:29:07] but the wider shots.
[00:29:10] Granted,
[00:29:10] these guys are not accurate throwing the ball,
[00:29:12] but I'm not sure where they're supposed to throw it.
[00:29:14] Yeah.
[00:29:14] But that,
[00:29:14] that has to do with coaching and scheme.
[00:29:16] I mean,
[00:29:17] you,
[00:29:17] you can find like name the last time we've thrown a slant.
[00:29:21] Yeah.
[00:29:22] Like we haven't thrown a slant.
[00:29:23] We've got guys that can get open three yards down the field on a slant.
[00:29:27] Like we,
[00:29:28] but we don't do that.
[00:29:29] We only throw to Colston Loveland.
[00:29:31] That's it.
[00:29:31] But we don't do anything.
[00:29:33] We don't do any tricky motions.
[00:29:35] We don't do anything where we're challenging teams in the middle of the field.
[00:29:38] It's,
[00:29:39] it's nothing.
[00:29:40] Yes.
[00:29:40] I agree.
[00:29:40] We don't have a ton of talent.
[00:29:42] And I will say this,
[00:29:43] Adam,
[00:29:43] I think you have to give more,
[00:29:45] at least a year of full,
[00:29:47] full out recruiting this,
[00:29:49] this coming year to see what's going to happen.
[00:29:51] Cause he did get that five-star O-lineman.
[00:29:54] Like there is a chance that he could prove that he's a good recruiter,
[00:29:57] but I do agree with you also at the same time,
[00:29:59] we gave Juwan Howard way too much time.
[00:30:02] Like there,
[00:30:02] there's,
[00:30:03] there's a point where you have to look at it and go,
[00:30:04] are we going to cut our losses?
[00:30:06] Or are we going to just continue to sit in this because we're Michigan and this
[00:30:11] is a Michigan man.
[00:30:12] And this was a Michigan man decision.
[00:30:13] And that's the tough call that you have to make,
[00:30:15] but you've got to upgrade the receivers.
[00:30:17] You've got to find a quarterback and you're losing all of your first round talent on defense.
[00:30:22] Like you're,
[00:30:23] you're going to be,
[00:30:24] you're going to be on your own next year.
[00:30:25] You're hanging out to dry.
[00:30:26] And that's when we're really going to see what he has.
[00:30:28] Right.
[00:30:28] I agree.
[00:30:29] Paul sitting down there in Columbus,
[00:30:30] just kind of laughing a little bit here and kind of thinking,
[00:30:34] and by the way,
[00:30:35] Paul,
[00:30:35] your,
[00:30:35] your Buckeyes are going to do very bad things to my Wolverines in a few weeks.
[00:30:39] I'm very,
[00:30:40] I'm looking for maybe another,
[00:30:42] like is COVID still around?
[00:30:43] Cause it may not be safe for us to go down here and play.
[00:30:46] I,
[00:30:46] I'm trying really hard not to say things like you could have had Kyle McCord,
[00:30:51] you know,
[00:30:52] kind of stuff.
[00:30:53] Yep.
[00:30:54] But I do think it's scheme,
[00:30:56] David.
[00:30:57] My question is the reason I say that is because Julian Fleming transfers from Ohio
[00:31:01] state.
[00:31:01] He started at Ohio state,
[00:31:03] which is known to be a semi prolific passing offense.
[00:31:06] And he goes to Penn state and he's nothing.
[00:31:08] He's,
[00:31:09] he's like nothing.
[00:31:10] Right.
[00:31:10] And so my question is what are the criteria on which you make a decision about
[00:31:16] Sharon more?
[00:31:17] Is it just,
[00:31:18] you are what your record is?
[00:31:20] Is it recruiting?
[00:31:21] Is it just like the board of regents or whatever are going to call Ward
[00:31:26] manual and,
[00:31:26] and say,
[00:31:27] Hey,
[00:31:28] it's time to have a conversation.
[00:31:30] What?
[00:31:31] Well,
[00:31:31] let me jump in for just a quick second and then I'll,
[00:31:33] I'll turn it loose to David and Adam.
[00:31:35] I'm also mindful of the reality of the recruiting efforts that probably were going on,
[00:31:42] but these kids were either uncertain or were very certain.
[00:31:47] Yeah.
[00:31:48] The coach Harbaugh wasn't going to be there.
[00:31:50] Coach mentor was going to be there.
[00:31:52] Herbert wasn't going to be there that all the guys that were in their living rooms,
[00:31:55] recruiting them were probably saying to them,
[00:31:58] it's pretty,
[00:31:58] pretty good chance.
[00:31:59] We're not going to be here.
[00:32:00] That's a problem.
[00:32:02] Yeah.
[00:32:02] Maybe,
[00:32:03] maybe,
[00:32:03] I don't know.
[00:32:04] Maybe Sharon was,
[00:32:05] was doing his due diligence as a recruiter,
[00:32:09] but was up against an unwinnable situation because of a glorious last season.
[00:32:15] Is that a possibility?
[00:32:16] I mean,
[00:32:16] it's,
[00:32:17] it's a possibility.
[00:32:18] I mean,
[00:32:18] he was left,
[00:32:20] you know,
[00:32:21] with the whole,
[00:32:22] is Harbaugh going to leave?
[00:32:22] Is he going to stay the NCAA?
[00:32:24] Are they going to hammer down,
[00:32:25] you know,
[00:32:26] on Michigan?
[00:32:26] There was a lot going into,
[00:32:28] which is why I think you need to give him a year or so,
[00:32:30] maybe two,
[00:32:31] to actually get a full recruiting,
[00:32:33] like a couple full,
[00:32:35] you know,
[00:32:36] recruiting sessions out of,
[00:32:37] you know,
[00:32:38] just to see what he's bringing in.
[00:32:40] But to answer your question,
[00:32:41] Paul,
[00:32:41] like it's hard to explain,
[00:32:44] but it's,
[00:32:45] it's,
[00:32:45] you're,
[00:32:45] you're playing not,
[00:32:46] now you're,
[00:32:47] you're not playing two good teams a season.
[00:32:50] You're playing five good teams a season.
[00:32:53] And so if you're not competitive and USC,
[00:32:56] at this point,
[00:32:57] having lost to Michigan and who else did they lose to?
[00:33:00] Maryland,
[00:33:01] was it?
[00:33:02] Or Minnesota?
[00:33:02] They lost one of those teams.
[00:33:03] Yeah.
[00:33:04] They've shown that they're not that good,
[00:33:06] but you've got Oregon and they're not going away.
[00:33:08] And you've got Ohio state and they're not going away.
[00:33:10] And you've got Penn state and they actually won a game that
[00:33:12] Franklin always loses at USC.
[00:33:15] Like you've got these teams that aren't going away.
[00:33:17] So if you're not competitive against those teams,
[00:33:20] that's when you have to cut bait because you're simply saying,
[00:33:22] we're just okay.
[00:33:24] Finishing fourth or fifth in this conference every year.
[00:33:26] And that's not,
[00:33:27] that's not what Michigan's about.
[00:33:29] Yeah.
[00:33:29] Do you guys think,
[00:33:30] do you think the,
[00:33:31] the what's the NCAA going to do thing causes Michigan to have to not tank
[00:33:38] their way through a season,
[00:33:39] but just not,
[00:33:40] do you think that's a thing for guys?
[00:33:42] I was surprised when that Babylon or whatever his name is,
[00:33:46] the five-star offensive tackle sign.
[00:33:47] And I was like,
[00:33:48] okay,
[00:33:48] there's a top 10 recruit in the country.
[00:33:50] Who's clearly not worried about what's going to happen or not happen in
[00:33:53] Michigan.
[00:33:53] So maybe,
[00:33:54] I don't know.
[00:33:55] That brings me to what I think is the real reason for the struggles this
[00:33:59] season.
[00:34:00] And I think this is next level thinking that will eventually prove that Ward
[00:34:03] manual is playing 4d chess and Sharon Moore is playing there with him.
[00:34:08] I think Michigan has decided to self-impose a bowl ban on the team this
[00:34:14] year as part of a bargain with the NCAA and have then instructed the
[00:34:19] quarterbacks to be horrendous.
[00:34:21] I think it's all part of an intentional strategy and it's,
[00:34:24] I mean,
[00:34:25] it's working to,
[00:34:26] to perfection right now.
[00:34:28] You can't ask for much more.
[00:34:29] I tried that with a straight face as best I could.
[00:34:31] No,
[00:34:32] you're,
[00:34:32] you're good.
[00:34:32] I mean,
[00:34:33] I struggle a little bit.
[00:34:34] I,
[00:34:34] I agree with David about,
[00:34:36] you know,
[00:34:36] giving more time.
[00:34:39] Cause you're right.
[00:34:39] He did basically pick up where Jim left off.
[00:34:43] Um,
[00:34:43] I don't know how much time that would be because it kind of scares me the
[00:34:47] rest of the schedule.
[00:34:49] I mean,
[00:34:50] yeah.
[00:34:51] MSU that whatever I would love to see.
[00:34:54] I don't know what the score is even going to be on that one.
[00:34:56] I mean,
[00:34:56] my worry is we have Oregon after that and you got,
[00:35:01] you got a seven or no team coming.
[00:35:03] I,
[00:35:04] Oh my gosh.
[00:35:04] I mean,
[00:35:05] I just,
[00:35:05] it's going to be a bloodbath.
[00:35:07] And,
[00:35:08] uh,
[00:35:08] my hope is that at least we can see a little bit of creativity.
[00:35:12] Creativity coming out,
[00:35:13] but maybe Bill,
[00:35:15] maybe you're,
[00:35:15] maybe,
[00:35:15] maybe you're our thinking,
[00:35:18] thinking as far as like a future,
[00:35:19] you know,
[00:35:20] this year is this can,
[00:35:21] we knew it was going to be this year.
[00:35:22] Maybe it is setting up for a 2025.
[00:35:24] It's just next level thinking.
[00:35:27] A 2030 run.
[00:35:29] So David,
[00:35:30] uh,
[00:35:30] here on,
[00:35:31] here on the podcast,
[00:35:31] as we close out MSU,
[00:35:33] U of M talk,
[00:35:35] uh,
[00:35:35] how does the game turn out?
[00:35:37] And in predict for us,
[00:35:38] if you would,
[00:35:39] Michigan's total passing yardage.
[00:35:42] Saturday evening in Ann Arbor.
[00:35:43] I mean,
[00:35:44] I don't know.
[00:35:45] Like I,
[00:35:45] I,
[00:35:46] I tend not to try to get too down,
[00:35:48] but the reality is,
[00:35:49] is I,
[00:35:50] I don't,
[00:35:51] I don't see where the offense is coming from with this team.
[00:35:54] Do I think that we have better athletes up front and we should dominate them in the trenches?
[00:35:58] Yeah.
[00:35:59] Is it going to be a close game?
[00:36:01] Probably because outside of last year,
[00:36:03] they tend to keep it close with us.
[00:36:05] But I mean,
[00:36:06] if we threw for 125 yards,
[00:36:08] I'd be surprised.
[00:36:09] Carl Adam,
[00:36:09] what are you seeing shaping up Saturday?
[00:36:12] Yeah,
[00:36:13] I,
[00:36:13] I agree.
[00:36:14] I'm thinking maybe one,
[00:36:15] one 60,
[00:36:16] one 70 on the passing.
[00:36:18] As far as that goes,
[00:36:19] I think it's going to be,
[00:36:20] I'm thinking way more on as far as running,
[00:36:23] keeping it on the ground.
[00:36:24] As far as score goes,
[00:36:25] I'm thinking it's going to be another,
[00:36:26] maybe another tight one,
[00:36:27] but it's going to be somewhere in the twenties.
[00:36:30] I'm not thinking it's going to be big.
[00:36:31] I think it's not going to be a blowout,
[00:36:33] but I think it's going to be a,
[00:36:35] it'll be sort of close.
[00:36:37] If you think,
[00:36:37] I guess a one score game.
[00:36:39] Yeah.
[00:36:40] Yeah.
[00:36:40] That seems safe.
[00:36:42] Let's go to pro football here for a moment before we dive into a WNBA briefly.
[00:36:47] Paul,
[00:36:48] no,
[00:36:48] no,
[00:36:49] no offense,
[00:36:50] but our lions right now are kind of fun to talk about.
[00:36:54] And your bears had the week.
[00:36:55] I think your bears had the week off.
[00:36:56] So they pull out a game in Minnesota that I didn't think they were going to win.
[00:37:01] And they did it in dramatic fashion.
[00:37:03] Their first game without their defensive star,
[00:37:06] they overcome an uncharacteristic late fumble by the running back Montgomery,
[00:37:10] who's been as good as any back in the league this year.
[00:37:13] And it's turned into a touchdown.
[00:37:14] And all of a sudden we have a ball game last two minute drill.
[00:37:17] Jared golf continues to be the MVP of the league.
[00:37:19] If it was voted on today,
[00:37:22] I don't know how you could pick anybody else.
[00:37:24] Maybe,
[00:37:24] maybe Lamar would have a little claim to that.
[00:37:27] And then it all comes down to a,
[00:37:29] a kick by a guy who was selling bricks.
[00:37:33] David,
[00:37:34] is this,
[00:37:34] is this the real deal lions team?
[00:37:37] Yeah,
[00:37:37] it is.
[00:37:38] I mean,
[00:37:39] I don't,
[00:37:39] I don't,
[00:37:40] I don't,
[00:37:40] I don't think you can look at another team in the league and say that there is a
[00:37:43] more complete team.
[00:37:44] I mean,
[00:37:45] the,
[00:37:45] the,
[00:37:45] the teams I would look at and say the best teams in the NFL would be the
[00:37:48] Ravens,
[00:37:49] the chiefs,
[00:37:50] even though my homes has not played well at all.
[00:37:53] He's putting up Bo Nix numbers.
[00:37:55] And then the lions,
[00:37:56] like to me,
[00:37:56] those are the,
[00:37:57] those are the three best teams in the league to lose Aiden Hutchinson.
[00:38:00] And to have to come up with an entirely different creative defensive scheme in
[00:38:04] order to keep that game going.
[00:38:06] We couldn't get pressure,
[00:38:07] but we found a way on the back end with Brian branch and some other guys,
[00:38:11] our linebackers played out of their minds.
[00:38:13] That game,
[00:38:14] they were Anzalone.
[00:38:16] And I forget the other guy's name,
[00:38:18] 53 or 58.
[00:38:20] He was,
[00:38:20] he was playing well.
[00:38:21] Jack Campbell was,
[00:38:22] was great in the run game.
[00:38:23] The thing that impresses me so much is the,
[00:38:25] is with the offense and you see them do things that team,
[00:38:29] Brian Flores,
[00:38:30] his team,
[00:38:31] the lions have beat him the last three times.
[00:38:33] And we're the only team that seems to be able to figure out Brian Flores.
[00:38:37] He blitzes like crazy.
[00:38:39] He brings all these extra guys.
[00:38:40] And in the first couple of drives of the game,
[00:38:42] you saw they got to golf.
[00:38:44] They sacked him a couple of times.
[00:38:45] They got that early lead.
[00:38:46] But as the game progressed,
[00:38:48] you started to see all this stuff Ben Johnson was doing.
[00:38:50] That was fascinating.
[00:38:52] Tim Patrick has been unbelievable for us.
[00:38:55] They would motion him across and he would take out a defensive end or a
[00:38:58] linebacker on the side to give golf extra time.
[00:39:01] That's what sprung that Amin Ross St.
[00:39:03] Brown touchdown,
[00:39:04] that deep shot.
[00:39:05] It was Tim Patrick blocking a defensive lineman motioning across the field.
[00:39:09] That's something you just don't see a lot of teams doing.
[00:39:11] And it's that creativity from the offense.
[00:39:14] We're going to be able to put up points on just about anybody.
[00:39:16] The question is,
[00:39:18] are we going to be able to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks?
[00:39:21] Cause Darnold had all day to throw most of that game.
[00:39:24] And while we played well,
[00:39:26] and we did get to him with Pascal late in the game when we needed to,
[00:39:30] that's one of those situations where obviously you're not going to get a Max
[00:39:33] Crosby.
[00:39:34] Cause that's going to be what three first round picks,
[00:39:36] but you,
[00:39:37] you've got to find something that you can feel like they're talking about,
[00:39:41] uh,
[00:39:42] was it James Houston filling in that role?
[00:39:44] And you're going to have to fill that with some other guys,
[00:39:46] but that's such an important position.
[00:39:48] We had 15 pressures this week against Minnesota.
[00:39:53] Aiden Hutchinson had 15 pressures last week alone before he got hurt.
[00:39:58] You've got to fill that gap.
[00:40:00] You have to do something on the outside in order to,
[00:40:04] to get pressure on some of these quarterbacks or they'll pick you apart.
[00:40:07] So would you give up two number ones for Max Crosby?
[00:40:10] Yes.
[00:40:11] Yes,
[00:40:12] absolutely.
[00:40:14] I'm with you.
[00:40:16] Oakland would never,
[00:40:17] or Las Vegas would never do it.
[00:40:18] They're not going to do it.
[00:40:19] He came out with that statement of,
[00:40:21] I will not leave,
[00:40:21] but you know,
[00:40:23] again,
[00:40:24] throw a little money chance to come back home.
[00:40:28] Mark Davis himself would have to sign off on it.
[00:40:30] Cause Max Crosby is the entire face of that franchise.
[00:40:34] There's no way they're like,
[00:40:35] he's the only thing that is bringing hope to the Raiders,
[00:40:38] but I've heard it said this,
[00:40:40] this way for someone,
[00:40:41] you know,
[00:40:42] someone who says it the way that Crosby said,
[00:40:44] it sounds like a guy from the Raiders who wants to leave the Raiders.
[00:40:48] Yeah,
[00:40:48] you're right,
[00:40:49] bro.
[00:40:49] And there's this thing for me,
[00:40:51] like I think Dan Campbell and Max Crosby in the same,
[00:40:56] like space would be scary.
[00:40:59] Would be.
[00:40:59] I just think that would be scary.
[00:41:01] Here's Campbell post game after the big win against the Vikings.
[00:41:04] To say that I'm proud of you would be the massive understatement.
[00:41:07] That's the way to come in here.
[00:41:08] Everything we talked about from the time we got the halftime to the way we had to finish it out,
[00:41:13] man.
[00:41:14] Composure,
[00:41:15] right?
[00:41:15] Communication,
[00:41:16] latitude,
[00:41:17] patience,
[00:41:18] patience.
[00:41:19] My God,
[00:41:20] man,
[00:41:20] you guys didn't bat an eye.
[00:41:21] I love this freaking team.
[00:41:23] I love the coaches.
[00:41:24] I love the players.
[00:41:25] I love everything about it,
[00:41:26] man.
[00:41:26] We are so freaking hard.
[00:41:28] That is an outstanding win.
[00:41:29] We are one and O in the division.
[00:41:30] Oh man.
[00:41:31] Through the wall.
[00:41:32] Oh man.
[00:41:33] I love that.
[00:41:33] Everybody through the wall.
[00:41:35] David,
[00:41:36] I know you have to run.
[00:41:37] I just want to real quickly make sure you're okay because there's a threat that the WNBA players may hold out.
[00:41:47] Are you going to be okay if that happens without WNBA action?
[00:41:52] I mean,
[00:41:53] the reality is they should.
[00:41:54] They should hold out for more money.
[00:41:55] They've upped their TV value a ton.
[00:41:58] They've become a talking point in all mainstream media.
[00:42:02] I think it's really great for what they're doing for their sport.
[00:42:07] Like,
[00:42:07] it's fantastic.
[00:42:07] I personally don't watch the WNBA,
[00:42:10] but I mean,
[00:42:12] it's because I have old sports habits and like,
[00:42:14] it's,
[00:42:14] you know,
[00:42:15] I kind of watch the sports I've been watching my whole life,
[00:42:18] but I think it's,
[00:42:19] you know,
[00:42:20] I think it's a really,
[00:42:21] really cool thing.
[00:42:23] And I'm glad they're getting their shine.
[00:42:25] And,
[00:42:25] and yeah,
[00:42:26] I would hold out if it meant for,
[00:42:27] meant for more money because they've honestly earned it.
[00:42:29] League lost $50 million somehow this year.
[00:42:32] Somehow.
[00:42:33] That's what the NBA worth more.
[00:42:34] That's what the NBA subsidizing them.
[00:42:36] They lost $50 million.
[00:42:38] Yeah.
[00:42:38] I mean,
[00:42:39] I don't pretend to understand the economics of it,
[00:42:42] but with players demanding a minimum $1 million salary,
[00:42:45] which would take some of them up from 60,000,
[00:42:48] I would see that would be an economic issue at some point.
[00:42:52] But,
[00:42:52] you know,
[00:42:53] the talk is that they either are going to get locked out or hold out or
[00:42:56] something,
[00:42:57] which given how that league has mangled the best thing that's ever
[00:43:02] happened to the league in a publicity standpoint,
[00:43:06] I wouldn't recommend you try going away for a while because people are
[00:43:09] going to say,
[00:43:10] Oh,
[00:43:10] well,
[00:43:10] that's a unique novelty for a little bit.
[00:43:12] Now let's move on to something else.
[00:43:14] Adam,
[00:43:15] how big is WNBA action there in North Dakota?
[00:43:19] WNBA?
[00:43:21] Yes.
[00:43:22] It's,
[00:43:23] I don't know.
[00:43:23] I don't,
[00:43:24] I don't,
[00:43:24] I don't follow them a lot actually at all.
[00:43:28] It's not really been in my wheelhouse.
[00:43:29] I actually had to research a little bit when,
[00:43:32] when Paul texted me,
[00:43:33] y'all were going to talk about that.
[00:43:34] I didn't even know.
[00:43:35] All I knew about was this Caitlin,
[00:43:39] what's her name?
[00:43:40] Clark.
[00:43:40] Caitlin Clark.
[00:43:41] Yeah.
[00:43:42] Bringing her on and completely changing the,
[00:43:45] the,
[00:43:45] the,
[00:43:46] the WNBA scene and bringing focus onto them more.
[00:43:49] Yeah.
[00:43:49] I mean,
[00:43:50] they got to hold out to get more money.
[00:43:52] I,
[00:43:53] how much more money though?
[00:43:55] I mean,
[00:43:56] what,
[00:43:57] what,
[00:43:57] what are we talking here?
[00:43:58] You know,
[00:43:59] I,
[00:43:59] I,
[00:43:59] I read that.
[00:44:02] What was it?
[00:44:02] They were locked into a 11 year media deal for $200 million a year.
[00:44:08] I don't know.
[00:44:09] I don't know what the numbers are.
[00:44:10] I just,
[00:44:10] I,
[00:44:11] I,
[00:44:11] I know that they have been literally kept alive like electric vehicles.
[00:44:16] They've been subsidized by a different entity than their own.
[00:44:20] Sure.
[00:44:20] Yeah.
[00:44:20] And the NBA is still writing those checks.
[00:44:23] So it's a really strange time to get a little high on your horse and say,
[00:44:27] no,
[00:44:27] you people need us.
[00:44:28] In fact,
[00:44:29] we're going to hold out.
[00:44:30] I still think it's gonna,
[00:44:31] I don't think it's going to pan out very well.
[00:44:33] I'm not wishing.
[00:44:34] Here's my thing.
[00:44:35] Here's my thing,
[00:44:36] Bill.
[00:44:36] I remember when the women's national soccer team was playing the same card,
[00:44:41] right?
[00:44:41] They're saying we want,
[00:44:42] their thing was they want equal pay with the men's national team.
[00:44:46] And the problem was the revenue on the women's side of professional soccer
[00:44:50] weight and national team soccer way down compared to what the men's sport
[00:44:56] would generate.
[00:44:57] And they pulled it off.
[00:44:58] They got what they asked for.
[00:45:00] And I think that's what David's saying when he says you might as well.
[00:45:03] Right.
[00:45:03] And so I don't,
[00:45:04] I would be shocked.
[00:45:06] My fear for the WNBA is that they're overvaluing.
[00:45:11] The players are overvaluing themselves.
[00:45:13] Yeah.
[00:45:14] And they're putting their livelihood at risk because I don't know when the
[00:45:20] owners just kind of say,
[00:45:21] yeah,
[00:45:21] this isn't,
[00:45:22] this isn't viable anymore.
[00:45:24] And so I,
[00:45:26] but who knows?
[00:45:27] We'll see.
[00:45:28] I see.
[00:45:29] For the most part,
[00:45:30] attendance was up quite a bit in that league.
[00:45:34] Whenever Caitlin Clark was in town.
[00:45:38] Otherwise numbers were up a little bit,
[00:45:40] but the tickets are essentially free in non Caitlin games.
[00:45:43] And so the revenue doesn't follow the attendance numbers quite as much as people
[00:45:48] would like you to think.
[00:45:49] We'll keep an eye on it.
[00:45:49] We'll talk about a little bit more.
[00:45:50] I just found it to be newsworthy that they were threatening to kind of hold
[00:45:54] out.
[00:45:54] I don't think they have the leverage or the power to do that.
[00:45:57] Let's move on to a holy discontent.
[00:46:04] It's time to blow off some steam,
[00:46:06] get it off your chest,
[00:46:07] rant about what's most bothering you.
[00:46:10] I got a lot of problems with you people.
[00:46:12] Now you're going to hear about it.
[00:46:13] It's time for holy discontent.
[00:46:17] Well,
[00:46:18] Paul,
[00:46:18] why don't you lead us off with a little holy discontent?
[00:46:21] Yeah.
[00:46:22] So my holy discontent this week is with the fact that Deandre Hopkins just went
[00:46:27] to the Kansas city chiefs for a fifth round draft pick.
[00:46:32] I'm a little ticked about this on a couple of different levels.
[00:46:34] First of all,
[00:46:35] I don't understand why the chiefs continue to,
[00:46:39] to just have the silver spoon in their mouth and everything just seems to go
[00:46:43] their way.
[00:46:44] I fully expect Deandre Hopkins to put up all pro numbers in their system and
[00:46:48] everything else.
[00:46:49] And maybe he can salvage Patrick Mahomes season.
[00:46:52] But the real thing that I'm ticked about is that last week in my fantasy
[00:46:57] football league,
[00:46:58] I just picked up Ricky Pierce.
[00:47:00] All the guy who was on,
[00:47:02] is on the 49ers and he's the guy who got injured preseason.
[00:47:05] And I thought I was like this really savvy fantasy owner because he was coming
[00:47:10] back from injury.
[00:47:11] And I picked him up right before Brandon,
[00:47:12] I,
[00:47:13] you can Debo Samuel both went down with injuries.
[00:47:15] And I thought,
[00:47:15] this is amazing.
[00:47:16] Everyone's going to be like,
[00:47:17] Paul,
[00:47:17] you're a man.
[00:47:18] You're awesome.
[00:47:19] That you had the foresight to see that coming.
[00:47:21] And then this thing breaks with Deandre Hopkins.
[00:47:24] Right?
[00:47:24] So I go on our league's website today and I'm like,
[00:47:27] I wonder if someone's going to pick up Deandre Hopkins and devalue my pickup
[00:47:32] of Ricky Pierce.
[00:47:33] All in the process.
[00:47:34] So I'm a little bit frustrated by that.
[00:47:36] Can't be too frustrated.
[00:47:37] Cause I'm winning my fantasy league and my Deandre Hopkins would be wide
[00:47:40] receiver for on my fantasy team,
[00:47:42] but I have CD lamb,
[00:47:43] the weak neighbors and Jamar chase.
[00:47:45] So I'm doing okay.
[00:47:46] But I always want,
[00:47:48] and the fantasy football is the one place where I want people to look at me
[00:47:51] and think I'm awesome.
[00:47:53] And so that's,
[00:47:54] that's my holy discontent.
[00:47:55] And four days ago.
[00:47:58] Yeah.
[00:47:59] On his Instagram account,
[00:48:01] Deandre Hopkins posted in,
[00:48:03] in his vehicle with his family,
[00:48:06] a little Taylor Swift song.
[00:48:10] The call of the song I believe is called rumor has it.
[00:48:14] And what team would Deandre would,
[00:48:18] would Taylor Swift be most closely connected to the Kansas city chiefs
[00:48:23] because of Travis Kelsey.
[00:48:25] Interesting.
[00:48:25] Four days prior to the trade being made.
[00:48:28] So anything that brings Taylor Swift back into the national spotlight,
[00:48:32] I have a problem with just as a general rule.
[00:48:34] That's a thing for me.
[00:48:35] She's back.
[00:48:36] Adam,
[00:48:37] do you have anything for holy discontent?
[00:48:39] Well,
[00:48:39] when Paul said you had to choose one,
[00:48:41] I was like,
[00:48:42] Oh man,
[00:48:43] I can boil it all down to just one.
[00:48:45] I mean,
[00:48:46] I have,
[00:48:46] I have major issues with the Kansas city cheaters.
[00:48:50] I mean,
[00:48:50] chiefs.
[00:48:52] I just,
[00:48:53] I'm not a fan of them and them being the only ones that are six and Oh,
[00:48:56] and then you have all of these,
[00:49:00] these false pass interference calls.
[00:49:04] And really,
[00:49:06] it just,
[00:49:07] okay.
[00:49:07] That's not what I wanted to go off on.
[00:49:09] My,
[00:49:10] my thing is,
[00:49:11] is we talked a little bit about it with Max Crosby.
[00:49:15] Um,
[00:49:15] I,
[00:49:16] I get that.
[00:49:17] He brings the money to the Raiders.
[00:49:20] I mean,
[00:49:20] he came out today saying,
[00:49:22] uh,
[00:49:22] saying this,
[00:49:23] he said,
[00:49:23] I'm,
[00:49:24] I'm like,
[00:49:24] I'm not trying to leave.
[00:49:25] I know it's blank business,
[00:49:27] but I don't have a hundred percent control and all that,
[00:49:29] but I want to be here.
[00:49:30] I want to be silver and black.
[00:49:32] I'll say it over and over and over again.
[00:49:34] So I know he's trying to dispel the rumors,
[00:49:36] but there's still a part of me that's thinking,
[00:49:38] okay,
[00:49:38] if we can still push,
[00:49:40] do whatever it takes,
[00:49:41] do whatever it takes.
[00:49:42] The Raiders aren't a good team right now.
[00:49:44] I know it definitely.
[00:49:45] Max Crosby comes off of that team.
[00:49:47] They're really not going to be a good team,
[00:49:49] but I mean,
[00:49:50] come on.
[00:49:51] I mean,
[00:49:52] let Brad Holmes cook a little bit here.
[00:49:54] Give,
[00:49:55] give him whatever it takes to get him to come.
[00:49:57] Aiden,
[00:49:58] we know he's going to be out.
[00:49:58] There's a chance that he could possibly be back,
[00:50:00] which that's a whole nother rant.
[00:50:02] Uh,
[00:50:03] he,
[00:50:04] you know,
[00:50:04] there could be a chance of him coming back.
[00:50:06] If we make the super bowl,
[00:50:07] which that would be a Cinderella story in itself.
[00:50:10] But what,
[00:50:11] why can't,
[00:50:12] why don't we spend the money,
[00:50:13] spend the round,
[00:50:14] you know,
[00:50:15] give them two,
[00:50:15] two first round picks,
[00:50:17] give them whatever.
[00:50:18] Our team is now set up.
[00:50:19] The,
[00:50:20] oh man,
[00:50:20] you got me on a rant now.
[00:50:21] Here we go.
[00:50:22] So the other part of that was also with,
[00:50:25] with this,
[00:50:26] uh,
[00:50:26] David brought this up.
[00:50:28] You know,
[00:50:28] we're not just,
[00:50:29] the lines aren't just this.
[00:50:30] We got lucky last season.
[00:50:32] We're proving ourselves this season.
[00:50:35] We didn't,
[00:50:35] it wasn't just one of those,
[00:50:37] Hey,
[00:50:37] we got here.
[00:50:38] Oh,
[00:50:38] but it was just,
[00:50:39] it was just luck.
[00:50:39] We got to the,
[00:50:40] we won the division.
[00:50:41] We,
[00:50:41] we were so close to go into the super bowl.
[00:50:43] Look at us now,
[00:50:45] a five in one team.
[00:50:46] I about lost my mind in,
[00:50:48] in the Sonic parking lot,
[00:50:50] watching yesterday,
[00:50:51] watching Sunday's game against the,
[00:50:53] uh,
[00:50:53] the Minnesota Vikings.
[00:50:54] And then again,
[00:50:56] with the one second throw,
[00:50:57] I got to throw one second on the play.
[00:50:59] It's always Detroit versus everybody,
[00:51:02] always Detroit versus everybody.
[00:51:03] And I'm like,
[00:51:04] they brought it back up again,
[00:51:05] put one second on the clock.
[00:51:07] Let's go ahead and give Darnold an opportunity to chuck it down the field one more time,
[00:51:11] which I'm so happy that instead of,
[00:51:13] instead of backing our players off and just rushing two or three,
[00:51:16] we actually rushed and we're able to take,
[00:51:18] uh,
[00:51:18] Darnold out.
[00:51:20] Um,
[00:51:20] but by the way,
[00:51:21] the kid,
[00:51:22] the guy who made the sack,
[00:51:23] uh,
[00:51:23] Trevor Nowoski on that final play is a Saginaw Valley state university.
[00:51:28] Cardinal playing for the lions and which is,
[00:51:30] you don't know this Adam,
[00:51:31] but he's that's,
[00:51:32] that's like eight minutes from my studio and my home.
[00:51:35] So man,
[00:51:36] really fun stuff to see a division.
[00:51:38] No,
[00:51:39] I really just,
[00:51:39] I,
[00:51:40] I,
[00:51:40] there's a lot to rant about when it comes to Detroit versus everybody.
[00:51:44] I'll take it.
[00:51:45] My,
[00:51:45] my holy discontent,
[00:51:46] um,
[00:51:47] is really because one of my favorite college basketball coaches has decided to call it quits.
[00:51:52] Uh,
[00:51:53] Tony Bennett from,
[00:51:54] uh,
[00:51:54] the university of Virginia.
[00:51:56] And he's really doing so.
[00:51:59] It sounded like in his press conference,
[00:52:01] I'm going to play a soundbite for you here in a moment.
[00:52:03] It's really doing so because of frustrations over the new system,
[00:52:07] the new way,
[00:52:08] the bidding on kids,
[00:52:10] the outrageous demands and the things that have taken coaching and made it
[00:52:16] probably feel more like you're a general manager somewhere,
[00:52:19] even though these are 17 and 18 and 19 year old kids that you're now having to
[00:52:23] beg to come and play with you and then facilitate whatever their demands are.
[00:52:28] Here's Tony Bennett.
[00:52:29] I think it's right for players,
[00:52:31] student athletes to receive revenue.
[00:52:33] Please don't mistake me.
[00:52:34] I do.
[00:52:34] I think it is,
[00:52:35] but the game and college athletics is not in a healthy spot and there needs to be
[00:52:40] change.
[00:52:41] And it's not going to go back.
[00:52:42] I think I was equipped to do the job here the old way and there's,
[00:52:46] that's who I am.
[00:52:47] And that's how it was.
[00:52:48] And my staff has buoyed me along to get to this point,
[00:52:51] but there needs to be change.
[00:52:53] It's going to be a closer to a professional model.
[00:52:55] Coach Carlisle,
[00:52:56] I think it is where there's got to be collective bargaining.
[00:52:59] There has to be a restriction on the salary pool pool that teams can spend.
[00:53:03] There has to be transfer regulation restrictions.
[00:53:07] There has to be some limits on the agent involvement to these young guys.
[00:53:13] And there are good agents and there are bad agents and they're driving some of
[00:53:16] this stuff that we're in.
[00:53:18] And I worry a lot about the mental health of the student athletes as all this
[00:53:22] stuff comes down.
[00:53:23] And it's sometimes when you're in it,
[00:53:26] you have to step away and maybe I can be an advocate for the student athletes
[00:53:30] and the coaches to,
[00:53:31] to get the changes.
[00:53:32] But this is a place that will not compromise and do it the right way.
[00:53:36] And I wish I could,
[00:53:37] it could be me,
[00:53:38] but it can't.
[00:53:39] And when you know in your heart,
[00:53:41] it's the time you have to give it away.
[00:53:43] I like that guy.
[00:53:45] And I think that was really well spelled out and he's not wrong.
[00:53:49] He's not wrong on any of those things.
[00:53:52] Really something because of our time,
[00:53:54] Paul,
[00:53:54] let's go.
[00:53:54] I'm going to let you do your,
[00:53:55] that guy,
[00:53:56] because it deserves mentioning history was made.
[00:53:58] So let's do that guy just for Paul.
[00:54:01] Right now,
[00:54:02] this minute,
[00:54:03] today,
[00:54:04] this week.
[00:54:06] I am.
[00:54:10] Okay.
[00:54:10] So my,
[00:54:12] that guy this week is going to surprise you,
[00:54:15] Bill.
[00:54:15] I'm breaking form.
[00:54:17] My,
[00:54:18] that guy this week is LeBron James.
[00:54:20] Oh man.
[00:54:22] He gave us an interesting storyline for the kicking,
[00:54:26] the kickoff of the NBA season with his son,
[00:54:29] Bronny debuting on his team with him.
[00:54:32] Was it contrived?
[00:54:33] Yes.
[00:54:35] Is Bronny destined for the G league?
[00:54:37] Most likely his Bronny stat line from his Lakers debut,
[00:54:42] three minutes played one rebound,
[00:54:44] zero points plus minus of minus five.
[00:54:48] So,
[00:54:49] so that's Bronny's inauspicious debut.
[00:54:52] But here's the thing.
[00:54:53] The reason I'm,
[00:54:53] I'm giving LeBron his props for this is because any of us who are dads,
[00:54:59] if we had the opportunity to do that with our son,
[00:55:03] we would,
[00:55:04] I would totally do the same thing.
[00:55:08] If I was LeBron,
[00:55:09] I might not have made it such a circus and,
[00:55:12] you know,
[00:55:13] tried to figure out how I could bring the spotlight on myself.
[00:55:15] I probably would have figured out how to let it be more about my son and not
[00:55:18] so much about me,
[00:55:19] but it's still a very,
[00:55:20] very cool thing.
[00:55:21] So way to go LeBron.
[00:55:22] I think it is pretty awesome.
[00:55:24] And in all reality,
[00:55:25] it's,
[00:55:26] it's a testament to the,
[00:55:28] his longevity as a player that he's been around long enough and still
[00:55:31] performing at a high enough level that he can be on the court and be one
[00:55:34] of the best players on the court when his son is trying to,
[00:55:37] to chart his own course.
[00:55:38] So well done.
[00:55:41] How's that?
[00:55:41] That was,
[00:55:42] that was way out of left field.
[00:55:43] I did not see that coming.
[00:55:44] In fact,
[00:55:44] I might have to clip that out and send it to a few people that are going to be
[00:55:49] shocked that Paul just called out LeBron as is that guy,
[00:55:52] but you're not wrong.
[00:55:53] I mean,
[00:55:53] it was a really,
[00:55:54] really very cool moment except for the players who were on the bench,
[00:55:58] who didn't get any minutes and been working in outperforming Bronny in
[00:56:02] practice.
[00:56:02] So my guess would be that this is a one-off.
[00:56:06] My guess,
[00:56:06] I could be wrong.
[00:56:07] Yeah.
[00:56:07] My guess would be,
[00:56:08] we got it done.
[00:56:09] ESPN got their clips for the next four months and we'll get,
[00:56:15] and they did win the game.
[00:56:16] So I mean,
[00:56:17] you can't argue with the results.
[00:56:18] They did win the game.
[00:56:19] And if they're going to do right by Bronny,
[00:56:21] they're going to put them in the G league and let him see if he can grow
[00:56:23] into something because he's not there.
[00:56:24] He's not ready.
[00:56:25] No,
[00:56:25] he's definitely,
[00:56:26] definitely not ready.
[00:56:27] Yeah.
[00:56:27] Let's wrap things up with our three minute message.
[00:56:30] And Paul,
[00:56:30] before you begin the three minute message,
[00:56:31] I'm going to give a prelude to your three minute message.
[00:56:35] But first this.
[00:56:38] Homer,
[00:56:38] I'd like you to remember Matthew 7,
[00:56:40] 26.
[00:56:41] The foolish man who built his house on sand.
[00:56:45] And you remember Matthew 21,
[00:56:50] 17.
[00:56:51] And he left them and went out of the city into Bethany and he lodged there.
[00:56:57] Yeah.
[00:56:58] Yeah.
[00:56:58] Think about it.
[00:57:00] Indeed.
[00:57:00] Think about it.
[00:57:01] And Paul's about to talk about worry and anxiety and how the Lord has us in his
[00:57:06] hands.
[00:57:08] And I found a soundbite that I was going to use in an earlier part of the show,
[00:57:12] but it fits perfectly into here.
[00:57:14] And it's with the Celtics coach,
[00:57:17] Joe Mazzula,
[00:57:18] who at their media day was asked if he felt pressure or any,
[00:57:22] if he was anxious at all about the Celtics having a target on their back.
[00:57:26] And his answer is so good.
[00:57:28] I just don't look at it as pressure because like a Boston media member or somebody
[00:57:33] expected me to win.
[00:57:34] Like they don't have a weapon.
[00:57:35] Like they're not going to like come after me if you don't win.
[00:57:37] Like they're saying words.
[00:57:38] So like,
[00:57:39] they don't mean anything.
[00:57:40] They're just words.
[00:57:41] You're just saying them because you have to say them.
[00:57:42] You're contractually obligated to write a,
[00:57:45] you know,
[00:57:45] 500 page article after our word article after there is words.
[00:57:49] They're not surgeons.
[00:57:50] We're not like in the military.
[00:57:52] We coach basketball for a living.
[00:57:53] We coach basketball for a living.
[00:57:55] I love that perspective.
[00:57:56] So Paul,
[00:57:57] I thought that fed into what you're going to talk about.
[00:57:59] That's really good.
[00:58:00] I,
[00:58:00] I,
[00:58:01] I was just thinking about the,
[00:58:03] the challenge that's at the root of the WNBA thing and the women in that
[00:58:09] league and all athletes,
[00:58:11] maybe in general,
[00:58:12] trying to figure out what they're worth,
[00:58:15] right?
[00:58:16] Where,
[00:58:17] and they're,
[00:58:17] they're finding their value in what they do.
[00:58:22] And in their performance at what they do.
[00:58:26] Now,
[00:58:26] I just spent last weekend up in the middle of North Dakota at a camp,
[00:58:31] watching teenagers unlearn that tendency that we all have and replace it
[00:58:38] with the idea that their value and their worth comes from their identity as
[00:58:46] being a child of God.
[00:58:47] Right?
[00:58:48] So Luke,
[00:58:49] Luke 12,
[00:58:49] we all know the verse or the idea,
[00:58:51] at least where it says Luke 12 or seven,
[00:58:53] indeed,
[00:58:53] the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
[00:58:55] Do not be afraid.
[00:58:56] You are worth more than many sparrows.
[00:58:59] So just want to remind all of us,
[00:59:01] um,
[00:59:03] this week to not find your value in your performance.
[00:59:08] Don't find your worth or your value in how well you do your job,
[00:59:13] what grades you get,
[00:59:15] uh,
[00:59:16] what your performance review looks like at work or any of those kinds of
[00:59:19] things,
[00:59:20] because that's not where Jesus looks when he is assigning value to you.
[00:59:26] He looks at the fact that you are a child of God.
[00:59:30] You are fearfully and wonderfully made and you are of infinite value because you
[00:59:35] are created in his image.
[00:59:36] So I just wanted to share that with all of us and challenge us as we go into
[00:59:41] our week.
[00:59:42] And we think about,
[00:59:43] um,
[00:59:43] we,
[00:59:44] we find ourselves being tempted,
[00:59:46] uh,
[00:59:47] to give into the lie that our value,
[00:59:50] um,
[00:59:51] is less than maybe God thinks it is.
[00:59:53] Let's just,
[00:59:54] let's just remember this truth.
[00:59:55] Let's take it with us in the ups and downs of what we have going on this week.
[01:00:00] There you go.
[01:00:01] Yeah.
[01:00:01] Really good.
[01:00:02] Adam,
[01:00:02] what a pleasure to have you on.
[01:00:04] Uh,
[01:00:04] the name of the camp,
[01:00:05] by the way,
[01:00:06] is Cooperstown Bible camp.
[01:00:09] Cooperstown.
[01:00:10] That's,
[01:00:10] that's not New York.
[01:00:11] That's in North Dakota.
[01:00:12] It's in North Dakota.
[01:00:14] Yep.
[01:00:14] Cooperstown,
[01:00:15] North Dakota.
[01:00:15] From what I understand,
[01:00:16] slice of heaven,
[01:00:17] little bit of God's country in Cooperstown.
[01:00:19] Yeah.
[01:00:19] From what I understand,
[01:00:21] church pew sports huge in North Dakota.
[01:00:23] Huge.
[01:00:24] I tell you,
[01:00:25] it's probably the talk of the town.
[01:00:26] Yeah,
[01:00:26] it will be now.
[01:00:27] Adam's personally responsible for 5,000 downloads from this episode.
[01:00:31] So we'll,
[01:00:32] uh,
[01:00:32] we'll be looking for that.
[01:00:33] And before we let you go,
[01:00:35] before we wrap it up,
[01:00:35] Adam,
[01:00:36] the final score of the Wolverines and Spartans showdown Saturday night is what?
[01:00:44] Man.
[01:00:46] I don't know.
[01:00:48] I'm thinking we're going to put at least 14 on.
[01:00:50] So 14 to 21.
[01:00:52] They're still going to,
[01:00:53] MSU are going to blow us out after that.
[01:00:55] I'm going to go cry in a closet and,
[01:00:58] uh,
[01:00:59] probably cry for the next two weeks after that as well.
[01:01:02] I hope you're wrong because I really,
[01:01:04] truly want Michigan to be at Michigan state this weekend.
[01:01:07] Yeah.
[01:01:08] You're not the only one.
[01:01:09] I do too.
[01:01:11] Yeah.
[01:01:12] Realistically speaking,
[01:01:13] it's just,
[01:01:14] it is what it is.
[01:01:15] Maybe the defense will score a couple of touchdowns.
[01:01:18] Hey,
[01:01:18] let's do that.
[01:01:19] Special teams.
[01:01:20] There you go.
[01:01:20] Special teams.
[01:01:21] Great to have you with us,
[01:01:22] Adam.
[01:01:22] Thanks so much.
[01:01:23] Hey,
[01:01:23] thanks.
[01:01:24] Appreciate it.
[01:01:24] Yeah.
[01:01:24] Thanks to all of you for listening.
[01:01:26] Make sure you check us out online at churchpewsports.com and let us hear your thoughts.

[01:01:40] Bye.
