[00:00:00] I'm not doing a good enough job as a coach and I gotta coach them better because it's

[00:00:05] unacceptable for us not to have found a way to win this football game.

[00:00:09] The following is a presentation of Hobson Media.

[00:00:13] Woo-hoo!

[00:00:14] It's not just another day, it's today.

[00:00:22] This is the Church Pew Sports podcast featuring a group of pastors delivering bombastic takes

[00:00:28] on sports, life and faith.

[00:00:30] They like to drink their Hater Raid and eat their Hater Tots.

[00:00:33] Take a knee.

[00:00:34] You got barbecue back there and didn't invite me.

[00:00:37] Hurt my feelings!

[00:00:39] Lend an ear.

[00:00:40] These are some of the best questions I've had.

[00:00:42] I have to tell you that straight up.

[00:00:44] What is that special?

[00:00:46] As the Church Pew Sports podcast begins.

[00:00:49] It's funny how one man's terrible as another man's pure joy.

[00:00:51] That man next to you is somebody that gots to heaven today.

[00:00:55] We ain't got tomorrow, we got now.

[00:00:59] We got now and what we got now is the start of football season.

[00:01:03] Hello friends and welcome into the Church Pew Sports podcast.

[00:01:06] It's so good to have you with us.

[00:01:07] We have a full lineup and we are walking a very tight rope in our recording time.

[00:01:14] I don't know when you're all listening to this but we're recording it starting at

[00:01:19] half time of the Chiefs Ravens game because football is back.

[00:01:25] Bill Hobson here as always joined by Pastor Paul Miller who comes to us tonight from Minneapolis

[00:01:32] and Minnesota.

[00:01:33] That's all the address you need.

[00:01:35] How are you, Paul?

[00:01:37] I'm doing great.

[00:01:38] I'm my phone chatting with all the guys from my fantasy football league because one of

[00:01:43] the matchups that we have going in week one is a guy who has Mahomes as his QB

[00:01:49] against a guy who has Butker as his kicker.

[00:01:52] So every time the Chiefs offense bogs down and they trot out their field goal kicker,

[00:01:58] it's a victory for my friend David.

[00:02:02] So they're having a lot of fun with that but they also gave me an icebreaker question to

[00:02:06] ask the rest of you guys.

[00:02:08] So as soon as you introduce everybody I have a question to start our conversation tonight.

[00:02:13] Well I wanted to bring in guys who love football.

[00:02:16] We'll talk a little bit of NFL, a little bit of college.

[00:02:18] We are going to say hello to David Collins who has been with us many times, to Josh Gilmer,

[00:02:25] the pride of Duke University who is waiting, I don't know, three weeks for the results

[00:02:29] of a test that he took on a computer.

[00:02:31] And it seems like they already had those results.

[00:02:33] So Josh is waiting on pins and needles.

[00:02:36] And our friend Billy Walker.

[00:02:38] I'm glad you said on a computer.

[00:02:39] That was good that you said tests that he took on a computer.

[00:02:43] Yeah.

[00:02:43] Otherwise what's, I mean there's no excuse for this taking so long.

[00:02:46] Josh what was the test?

[00:02:48] It was the MCAT exam.

[00:02:51] Oh same what we've all been taking, yeah.

[00:02:53] Yeah but there's no reason it should take a month for an online multiple choice test.

[00:02:59] No Billy, how'd you do, Billy Walker, a pastor of Calvary Southgate, how did you do when

[00:03:05] you took the MCAT?

[00:03:09] Well the MCAT is that an exam to get into Baptist Park because they were the wild cats.

[00:03:18] So I don't know, I think I missed out on the MCATs.

[00:03:23] Josh it's entirely possible that we could have done a tour around the lineup and just

[00:03:30] had everybody give their best guess as to what MCAT means and we would not have known the

[00:03:36] acronym.

[00:03:37] So, alright Paul what's your icebreaker?

[00:03:40] Okay so this comes to you guys straight from all my new sports fan friends here in the

[00:03:45] Twin Cities in Minnesota.

[00:03:47] They want to know which sports market has been more pathetic over the last couple

[00:03:53] of decades.

[00:03:54] Oh boy.

[00:03:55] Detroit or Minneapolis.

[00:03:58] That is the icebreaker question to get us going tonight.

[00:04:01] David?

[00:04:05] I mean first off Josh did you forget your number two pencil or does that not work with computers?

[00:04:12] I don't think they're very useful.

[00:04:14] Yeah, that's I think probably if I'm gonna be totally honest Minnesota because Detroit

[00:04:23] has had four Stanley Cups and even though the Tigers lost they went to two World Series.

[00:04:32] The Lions if the Lions didn't win two playoff games last year I would say Detroit but there's

[00:04:41] been a lot of recent success with Detroit franchises outside of like the Pistons.

[00:04:47] Michigan won a national championship and I consider that like a Detroit product so

[00:04:52] I would honestly have to agree with Minnesotans that they've had it worse over the last 10,

[00:05:03] 15 years.

[00:05:05] I don't know Billy Detroit versus Minnesota who's got it better?

[00:05:09] Who's got it better than us?

[00:05:13] Not historically by the way not historically but within the last 10, 15 years.

[00:05:19] Yeah I thought this was an easy answer and I was gonna say yeah no Minnesotans had playoff

[00:05:30] runs for twins hockey.

[00:05:35] I mean they've even had a good NBA team which is something we haven't known anything about

[00:05:39] in quite a few years.

[00:05:42] So I was gonna say that's the easy answer but after hearing David's response I can't

[00:05:50] disagree that if we're just talking about the 2000s which is a 20 you know 24 year period

[00:06:00] we do have a couple of cups.

[00:06:04] We've got an NBA championship or two in there.

[00:06:09] We got two World Series appearances.

[00:06:12] We've got U of M last year.

[00:06:18] Probably even have a Michigan State you know quite a few runs as far as basketball is concerned.

[00:06:25] So yeah I don't know I mean I guess I understand where they're coming from.

[00:06:32] I've always thought it's Detroit against Cleveland as far as futility in major league sports

[00:06:40] is concerned but yeah I mean you know when you think about it we've had some decent times.

[00:06:49] We just haven't been able to put it all together.

[00:06:51] I personally think the way that things are going.

[00:06:54] Tigers seem to be on the rebound.

[00:06:56] Lions definitely on the rebound.

[00:06:58] Red Wings think seem to be moving in the right direction every year increasing by

[00:07:03] points and you know get to the playoffs and I think Steve will bring a cup here.

[00:07:07] If you get all that then it seems to me ESPN needs to be ESPN Detroit at some point.

[00:07:13] We need our own little label here.

[00:07:16] Forget LA, New York I know they need that okay fine.

[00:07:19] Boston great well if we get to that point then I think Detroit is owed one personally

[00:07:26] because there are not too many cities that have the sports fervor that Detroit has

[00:07:34] and there's nobody that has other sports teams playing with them about four city blocks of each other.

[00:07:40] We will get 84 more LeBron updates before we get ESPN Detroit chapter.

[00:07:48] For sure.

[00:07:49] And this question just to give a little context comes from all my friends in here in Minneapolis

[00:07:54] who listen to this podcast and want all you Detroit homers to stop complaining

[00:07:59] because they have it worse than you do.

[00:08:01] Wait a minute what happened in the divisional or the NFC championship whatever the game was

[00:08:08] with the big walk off miracle in Minnesota the whole thing a couple years ago they've had some pretty

[00:08:14] Josh you're feeling me right these people cannot they cannot get away with this level of whining

[00:08:20] whoever you are up there in Minneapolis I know Paul's new to you but you don't have to do this

[00:08:26] to him to orient him to your city he knows better we're on to you Josh please pick it up well

[00:08:34] I was thinking about like in the last three to five years my initial answer was hands down

[00:08:41] Detroit has a worse the wild have been consistent playoff finishers the twins have been good

[00:08:48] the piston the the Tigers are almost 500 and that's like a world series and the pistons are absolutely abysmal

[00:08:54] but with all that being said the lines winning two playoff games has meant so much that I instantly think

[00:09:01] that that trumps everything you know what I think I think the Minneapolis Heights many many

[00:09:07] applicants many Minneapolis sites sites I just think they're tired of PJ I just think they're tired

[00:09:14] of PJ flag and they're getting a little bit a little bit ruffled up a little bit because

[00:09:19] the only keeps saying is rolled a boat it means nothing means absolutely I wrote yeah PJ Fleck is not

[00:09:26] in fact Paul what let's turn to college football here since we're going to celebrate football how did

[00:09:32] the Big 10 do in week zero and in week one speaking of our friends in Minneapolis yeah that was a

[00:09:40] that was an artful transition bill the big 10 went 17 and one well in week one that's a lot of teams

[00:09:47] for a big 10 David how many teams are in the big 10 judging by the title of the conference 49 good so

[00:09:56] the big 10 went 17 and one did some teams play twice the only team that took a loss in week one from

[00:10:06] the big 10 was my Minnesota I was rooting for you big time they are not my Minnesota Golden

[00:10:16] Gophers they have like a Nickelodeon character on the side of their helmets and it's just not

[00:10:22] working for me I will still be a buck I do the rest of my days please tell your colleagues in that

[00:10:28] fair city that the reason that the Golden Gophers are miserable is because of how that university

[00:10:35] treated Jerry kill and it will forever be that way so thoughts about week one of college football

[00:10:43] there were some some pretty fun matchups and then there were the old cupcake matchups like you

[00:10:48] know the Buckeyes over Akron 52 to 6 Michigan played a decent Fresno State team and pulled away

[00:10:55] late 30 to 10 Oregon over Idaho wow what a game to spread was 49 points Oregon pulled it out by 10

[00:11:01] so if those of you who are interested in that kind of thing might be a little frustrated Penn State 3412

[00:11:07] West Virginia Iowa ladies and gentlemen the Iowa Hawkeyes in week one basically put up their

[00:11:16] season total of points from last year 40 to nothing over the powerhouse Illinois State

[00:11:23] and then we'll get into some SEC stuff in a minute but first just kind of general impressions from week

[00:11:29] one David as you kind of gear up for your college football excitement level at your favorite

[00:11:35] organization the NCAA back in charge on the throne your thoughts on week one I think the

[00:11:42] biggest takeaway is Florida State which cracks me up going 0 and 2 and week zero and week one

[00:11:48] that's hilarious to me if I'm talking outside of Michigan I thought Miami was really impressive

[00:11:56] smoking Florida like that Michigan scares me their offense scares me I'm you know there I think

[00:12:04] Texas is five point favorites against Michigan and I think that's pretty fair yeah I mean it's

[00:12:18] because you're you're you're talking about like the first time these teams get out on the field as a unit so I

[00:12:27] mean I I'm excited about the season but I think that Michigan's going to really show their true colors

[00:12:35] against Texas and I'm not sure I'm gonna like those colors but it's always fun to laugh at you know a

[00:12:43] Brian Kelly like those guys I love laughing at those guys seeing them lose that's fun but yeah I mean I

[00:12:52] guess I don't really have any you know George is the best team and Ohio State's the best team

[00:12:57] that's just the way that it is right now yeah so Billy we're amazing blue you and me and a number

[00:13:07] of people around us everybody on the call really except for the guy in the top right corner of my zoom

[00:13:12] screen any concerns about Wolverine land or are we just okay with living off of what just happened

[00:13:19] and whatever happens this year is just it's fine yeah you know I mean it's gonna be you're gonna be hard

[00:13:26] pressed to follow it up with back-to-backs so I mean would I prefer that they make a playoff run yes

[00:13:35] I don't want to fall off the table but I don't think they will they don't have a preseason and so in my

[00:13:44] opinion this past week was Michigan's preseason game did they look real good no Fresno State though a

[00:13:51] little better than maybe people give them credit for yes Texas looked awesome so they're definitely

[00:13:58] gonna have a test this week but they need a test and they need to step up and you know they have one of

[00:14:06] the longest winning streaks at home one of the longest winning streaks total actually so I mean

[00:14:14] there you know a lot of stuff on the line I think they'll step up I'm not saying they're

[00:14:19] gonna win for sure but I do think a hundred thousand strong will help and I think the day will bounce back

[00:14:28] offensively they'll play much better than they did and it really is kind of to the offensive line and the

[00:14:36] defense as to how things turn out the nice thing is if they lose it doesn't kill their season

[00:14:42] right correct Paul you were gonna say I was just gonna say I like what I'm hearing from outside the

[00:14:51] Ann Arbor echo chamber is that Michigan didn't really play as bad as it might have looked they have

[00:15:00] five brand they have five new starters on the offensive line which is gonna make the running game

[00:15:04] terrible it's gonna make the quarterbacks look worse than they actually are and so if they can

[00:15:11] just weather the storm and maybe come out of these first I don't know the first month of the season

[00:15:17] with maybe one loss to a top five team then they should be okay that'll give their offensive line

[00:15:23] some time to gel I do think they are a little bit hurting for a quarterback which cracks me up that

[00:15:32] I see some stuff in the internet and then chat rooms that I might be a part of where they talk about

[00:15:40] Kyle McCord should have gone to Michigan instead of Syracuse and that just cracks me up that people

[00:15:46] think that would have been a thing that would have happened and would have been helpful for them

[00:15:50] but I don't know I think their defense is for real I think their defense is legit and I think

[00:15:55] their defense could carry them to a two maybe three loss season which puts them on the on the

[00:16:03] bubble for the playoff I think based on the strength of the Big Ten this year.

[00:16:07] I also think Donovan Edwards steps up in big games. He can go a few mediocre plays mediocre games

[00:16:19] but then all of a sudden when it's on the line seems to me like he always steps up with a couple

[00:16:24] big runs I wouldn't be shocked if he did that again this Saturday.

[00:16:27] And Paul I don't disagree with you but you say Michigan Echo Chamber blah blah blah

[00:16:32] and you're the one that's the most positive about them. It's it's weird like we are trying to temper

[00:16:39] expectations and you're trying to say no it's not that bad I mean you can see it the way we can

[00:16:47] see it can you not like there are a lot of issues with the team currently you're right

[00:16:55] if their offensive line gets together and we can find something a quarterback and Davis Warren

[00:17:00] made some nice plays like but we're not here saying Michigan's the greatest we're going to win every

[00:17:08] game like it's not some Echo Chamber where we're just lauding them like there's some great team.

[00:17:15] I think you guys are coming back down off of an undefeated season and a natty so there's only one

[00:17:21] way to go from that and I kind of I kind of feel like all the NCAA junk is just clouding the lenses of the folks

[00:17:34] in the folks who are Michigan fans because it's like how do you feel and maybe you guys maybe in Ann Arbor

[00:17:41] people are sitting around pretending it's not happening or pretend it's not going to be a thing but

[00:17:45] maybe it's affecting recruiting a little bit and all this other stuff but I just I actually not it's funny now that I

[00:17:52] don't live so close to Ann Arbor I'm going back to how I viewed Michigan back before I lived around

[00:17:59] Michigan fans which is I didn't hate them they're a Big 10 team that I really wanted to see them be good

[00:18:06] because I'm a Big 10 guy at my core and I want to see the Big 10 succeed and I think a good Michigan

[00:18:13] program is good for everybody in the Big 10 everybody like my dad a little bit a little bit yeah dad was

[00:18:21] that was always for every Big 10 team whenever they play just for you of them all the time yeah

[00:18:26] Josh is Duke this year a football school or a basketball school I've lost track their hands down basketball

[00:18:33] I want many DS fired he's that didn't take on wow that was a hot tip he it was not good Malik Murphy

[00:18:45] our quarterback from Texas the transfer he did not look good I mean we played Elon and we won by

[00:18:52] I think a touchdown so Elon Musk was not very yeah yeah football player versatile though did not did

[00:19:01] not look too good and obviously as we've all been discussing the Michigan thing I was saying before

[00:19:09] the season started with their schedule they could make it with two losses like if it came Oregon Ohio

[00:19:14] State Texas they just got to win one of them Oregon obviously didn't look too good USC did win

[00:19:20] maybe we could switch that with Oregon and USC they got to beat two of them or one of them

[00:19:27] I'm still not very high on I want him to be good he does open big games but I'm convinced that like when he

[00:19:35] does make his big runs it's not really he did anything we have a good old line he's a fast guy

[00:19:40] it's not like he's doing anything crazy I arguably think he just gets lucky I really don't think he's

[00:19:46] the guy I want him to be the guy and I don't think he is I'm all in Mullings looks way better doesn't

[00:19:55] and it's not Edwards I want him to be but he's not so Josh were you watching the Notre Dame and M

[00:20:02] game just so you could root against Elko that's my yes I wish I could show it to you we took

[00:20:09] by roommates TV and we had them both in right next the Michigan game that Notre Dame game on at

[00:20:15] the same time was the first time in my life I was ever happy to see Notre Dame win the

[00:20:21] one in A&M and their coach shall not be named to lose a million times over again so it was a good day

[00:20:29] how did you move to 75 inch TVs in the same dorm room that's amazing I don't know it's kind of crazy

[00:20:36] Wow by the way Paul as we talk about mostly Big 10 is what we've been talking about the other

[00:20:42] conference down south the other of the two conferences that will be the only two in the

[00:20:47] country here in about five years the SEC so the Big 10 with 17 and one the SEC went like 38 and 2

[00:20:55] and you listed some of their offensive numbers on the document that we use for the podcast but I think

[00:21:03] you made a mistake because it looks like you put basketball scores on here yeah I mean let me just

[00:21:08] run some numbers for you guys here the point point total scored by some of the SEC teams in week

[00:21:14] one Oklahoma 51 Mississippi 51 UT 52 Mississippi State 56 Bama 63 Tennessee 69 Arkansas 70 Auburn

[00:21:26] 73 Ole Miss 76 man they whooped up on the directional schools and all the other kind of

[00:21:44] one in three against ranked opponents as a conference in week one which nobody wants to talk about but

[00:21:50] they Georgia B Clemson which thank you I'm happy anytime Dabbo loses and I'm lost in Notre Dame Florida

[00:22:00] lost Miami LSU lost to USC so the SEC whooped up on lesser competition in week one which is

[00:22:07] their preseason like you were talking about Billy like as a conference they did that but I don't

[00:22:12] know that it meant a whole lot because in the games against the good matchups which there were only

[00:22:17] a handful of really good matchups in week one they lost all of them I get well except for except

[00:22:21] for Clemson got beat by Georgia I do want to do something a little contrary to where we normally would

[00:22:28] go when discussing Brian Kelly and LSU I want to compliment Brian Kelly because over the course

[00:22:36] of last year to this year in the season openers his post game commentary has improved dramatically so

[00:22:44] here's here's last year when they lost their opener I'm not I'm in favor of execution maybe maybe our

[00:22:55] entire team needs to be executed after tonight I mean we just didn't execute very well so that

[00:23:01] was pretty horrible and probably the clumsiest dumbest thing that an adult male could say especially

[00:23:06] when talking about the kids that he coaches so again again in the spirit of church view sports

[00:23:11] I'm complimenting Brian Kelly because this year he was angry we're sitting here again talking

[00:23:19] about the same things about not finishing when you have an opponent in a position to put him away

[00:23:28] but what we're doing on the sideline is feeling like the game's over and I'm so angry about it that I

[00:23:36] got to do something about it I'm not doing a good enough job as a coach and I got to coach him

[00:23:41] better because it's unacceptable for us not to have found a way to win this football game.

[00:23:47] Yeah Josh quick question for you because you're a college student and you've been studying hard

[00:23:52] and you're really paying attention to trends and statistics and MCATs and all this stuff between

[00:23:58] last year's LSU season opening loss and this year's LSU season opening loss what's the primary

[00:24:05] common denominator between those two teams and their season opening losses.

[00:24:11] You mean besides Brian Kelly?

[00:24:12] No no just exactly that that's precisely that yeah so he can't figure out why they can't be around

[00:24:18] and I'm like well I got an idea coach you know call right raise your hand in the back of the room hey coach pick me

[00:24:24] David what is it about this gentleman that we kind of take some sort of an enjoyment out of these kind of moments.

[00:24:33] Honestly it's it's it's the fakeness of him it's the he gets to LSU and suddenly has a southern accent it's the

[00:24:42] The turn table.

[00:24:44] His family like it just it's just heard a presidential candidate do that this week I digress sorry David.

[00:24:51] No it's just it's frustrating that he seems to have like the yeah the dance videos with his recruits and the family

[00:25:00] and all this stuff and then all of a sudden you interview him and he doesn't have a southern accent at all it's like

[00:25:07] well you never did you were at Grand Valley and then Cincinnati and the Notre Dame and then now you're at like

[00:25:15] you're not a southern boy but you pretend to be because that's where you're at so it's there's a pleasure in

[00:25:25] disliking him because he has a smug look all the time too like that picture I sent you guys where he's just

[00:25:34] the him on the sidelines like that I don't know it brings me joy I can't help it.

[00:25:41] Yeah he took some Notre Dame with him when he went to LSU as far as like I don't like him like I didn't like him

[00:25:50] partially because he was at Notre Dame and now I feel that I didn't not like LSU until he got there.

[00:25:56] Yeah it's funny. I think it travels with him. LSU I've always liked but then he got there and I'm like no they should

[00:26:03] lose all the games. I like that Orgeron and that dude's a weirdo like whatever like but Brian Kelly is a specific

[00:26:11] kind of unlikable I can't explain it but it's just there. Hey let me bring in our sixth voice to the program

[00:26:20] tonight coming to us from his vehicle in the city of Las Vegas wearing his Detroit lion shirt getting ready for a season opener

[00:26:30] it's none other than Josh's father Randy Gilmer fresh out of worship team rehearsal for his church because it's the wrong time zone

[00:26:38] they've messed everything up out there Randy how are you? Good gentlemen. Randy Paul has been waiting on the edge of his seat

[00:26:48] with some level of bated breath to ask you a specific question as you enter the chat here so Paul I'll turn it over to you.

[00:26:59] Man I feel like you're setting me up here a little bit Bill but Randy it's great to see you we haven't hung out in forever and miss you

[00:27:08] I gotta ask I thought I was the only one well I miss you too. Talk word Randy here's my question I'm trying to peel back the facade and get to the heart of Michigan fans

[00:27:25] and you are about the Michigan-ist fanniest guy I know. Fanniest guy I like that. Yeah it's a fanny case.

[00:27:35] What is your like what's the stress meter at for you with respect to all the NCAA stuff and everything that it doesn't seem to be going well

[00:27:46] Paul from Michigan right now and I'm not offering any commentary on that I'm just making an observation but I wanted to ask you how you're feeling about it as a guy who bleeds maze and blue.

[00:28:00] Well thank you Paul. This is a very complicated answer for me because one I have losing a lot of respect for my university if any of the if any of the stories that are leaking out about what they did to Jim Harbaugh

[00:28:21] and forcing him to drop out of the injunction and not having any guts to challenge what was happening is true that's going to make it extremely difficult for me to want to continue to support my university.

[00:28:37] I will. I'm not going to sit here and say I won't but it makes it much more difficult to write the checks.

[00:28:41] I am very very disappointed in Ward manual. I think the man has done nothing. Perhaps the dusty may hire will end up being good. However, you know we sit here today and one football coach has a contract wink

[00:28:59] Martin Dale and the others are still they're still under memorandums of understanding and he's like oh well we'll get it done. We also had to hire basketball coaches to well it's your job to hire them and to get contracts.

[00:29:12] I think I saw is one of two or three head coaches in all of football that does not have a have a contract done. And even if you want to say they're waiting to see what happens with the NCAA for him.

[00:29:25] There's all the other coaches that they have not done memorandums of understanding done. So I'm very hopeful that Sharon Moore is really really good because it's not a good look for what Michigan has done to one of their greatest players and greatest coaches in the history of

[00:29:41] their school. If they ever actually need to replace Sharon Moore based upon the fact that they're laying down and doing nothing for the for the NCAA. So that's kind of where I'm at right now with regard to the NCAA. I'm actually more upset with my university for not actually following the words

[00:30:00] leaders and best that are in their fight song.

[00:30:03] That's good. What do you think of like the timing of Harbaugh coming out and slinging arrows at the NCAA at a time that I don't know was advantageous for the university.

[00:30:17] I don't think it's advantageous to the university.

[00:30:21] I'm not surprised that Harbaugh would make those statements and would continue to make those statements and and tried the university in that way.

[00:30:31] And again if any of the truth is if any of what is said was true about what Michigan made him do with regard to the injunction and pretty much forced him to say I'm dropping the lawsuit because they wanted to

[00:30:44] defend him. So I can see why Harbaugh would be the way is nobody's defending him and nobody is going to defend him to the university or to the NCAA.

[00:30:54] I also think while it might hurt the university, it also shows that how spineless the NCAA is if they're still allowing Jim Harbaugh who no longer is a coach and NCAA and probably will never be an

[00:31:10] up coach in the NCAA to actually impact what they might do to a member institution because they don't like what a former coach is saying about them.

[00:31:18] I know one guy who will always defend his coach and his university. He was the star of a Netflix documentary this week and

[00:31:28] Josh Gilbert.

[00:31:29] You guys are watching. I did. Yeah, Billy. Do you see it? David? Do you see it? You to see it?

[00:31:33] I had a mind. Josh Gilbert, how do you sum up the Connor Stallion's documentary and his role at the university?

[00:31:40] Well, the entire time my dad was talking, all I was doing was thinking about this documentary actually because prior to watching it, I was like, oh man, you can't blame the whole school for one bad egg.

[00:31:52] But after watching it, Connor Stallion just the go. I am lifelong Connor Stallion fan American hero.

[00:31:59] I will write him in for president. I texted my dad that I said I'd write a minute. He's great.

[00:32:06] The dedication is unmatched.

[00:32:08] There was there was no question that he was going to go to the mat and go to he probably would have been incarcerated had it been required of him to go to those extremes as I was watching that doc with my wife.

[00:32:24] I think her comment was this guy's crazy.

[00:32:30] There's an element of that. Billy, I don't know if you saw it or not, but I know I know what Paul's kind of delicately getting to when he's talking to Randy and he's he hasn't said it yet.

[00:32:39] We was talking about the asterisk question on the whole thing. So Billy, what were your thoughts about Connor and that whole part of this college football equation?

[00:32:50] Well, my personal opinion is and that's all it is is my personal opinion. But I do think that Connor Stallion's being what he is and as dedicated as he was, I, I totally believe Jim Harbaugh when he says I didn't know this was going on.

[00:33:11] I think the guy would have gone to the map for him and for the program. The other thing is though, the program in my opinion completely righted itself by mowing through whoever they had to mow through in order to get the national title.

[00:33:32] And they weren't stealing any signs at that point in time and they were still blowing people away by the same amount. Defense was still as stalwart offensive line was still running people over.

[00:33:44] Ryan Day still lost his just for men endorsement because he lost to Michigan again. And so now that's that's just what I'm hearing outside the Columbus Echo Chamber.

[00:34:02] I was, I must admit I was rip it by the whole thing. I could not turn it off. It was it was good television only only one of the two fan bases represented in that documentary had a guy in disguise, naming himself bro hi ho.

[00:34:20] And I'm not really sure what that was all about. I do you know, I know Michigan swag on his desk. Yeah, such a bizarre with throat. It's such a bizarre thing. Joel Klatt from Fox Sports had kind of a succinct wrap up at least of his opinion of all of that then we'll get into some predictions will briefly talk NFL but here's Joel Klatt on the whole Michigan asterisk matter.

[00:34:44] First and foremost, the national championship in 2023 is not even close to tainted. Not even close. It's not even close to an asterisk. Not even close. Number one, when this operation were still plausibly happening they were blowing people out and there was little to no advantage needed nor gained.

[00:35:06] Number two, once this operation was brought to the forefront and then it was eliminated they got nothing but better. The first week that Connor Stallions wasn't on the field. They beat Michigan State 49 zero.

[00:35:26] Perform I guess proof is in performance but I don't think it's over with yet so I don't think well you guys can tell me would anybody on this on this podcast be super shocked. If tomorrow before kickoff the NCAA dropped some sort of a suspension of

[00:35:45] sure own more anybody just anybody want to jump in and say oh that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. And that word at that Ward manual the Michigan ad would say well you know we got to abide by the

[00:35:57] none of that would surprise me now Randy I think if that were to happen would personally drive from Vegas to Ann Arbor and begin some sort of a sit in in the athletic offices.

[00:36:13] Mostly to protest word manual but here's hoping that things just move forward on the football field for the rest of the season and we can just worry about beating the $20 million payroll Buckeyes down in Columbus. That's my biggest concern for the season.

[00:36:27] Yeah see there it is the interesting timing is the 90 days that Michigan has to respond to the NLA expires like Monday of the game against Ohio State doesn't really that's ironic to the timing of that it's almost

[00:36:45] not ironic at all. Yeah intentional. Yeah 100% intentional. Well sure all markets suspended for that game and you have them wins anyhow. Right. Dave Beard is going great coach by wink Martindale game show host. Okay let's go around the horn. Big 10 predictions. David Collins.

[00:37:08] Yeah Ohio State's going to win by a large margin. Yeah they're pretty pretty formidable. Josh what are you seeing? Same thing I think at this point after week one Ohio State is clear clearly the far away. Randy.

[00:37:29] Unfortunately yes.

[00:37:31] Ohio State.

[00:37:34] However I will put the I will put an asterisk on that because I mean it is still very early in the season and they still they were down I believe three nothing at the beginning of that game so.

[00:37:47] Yeah for sure.

[00:37:48] You know Michigan has yet to be losing at any more point in time this year.

[00:37:52] But this is the point in Ryan Day's career as a coach. They've gotten all the players they've done the transfer portal they've done everything correct.

[00:38:04] I just don't see how we can match up with them unless our offensive line like becomes something that I don't think it's going to be. Yeah.

[00:38:16] Buckeyes go to Oregon here sometime soon correct.

[00:38:20] Like beginning of October so like week five I think or something like that.

[00:38:24] Aside from that they really they really have a pretty pretty favorable schedule. Okay who knows what to think about Oregon after that game against Idaho.

[00:38:33] Obviously still early it's hard to tell but I mean everybody talks about Michigan not looking good against Fresno State I mean that's a tougher opponent than Idaho and Oregon sure didn't look very good.

[00:38:42] There is there's an NFL season that is underway as we're speaking and then of course coming up this weekend the full slated games including our Detroit Lions.

[00:38:53] We will have a full church pew sports NFL conversation coming up probably next week but just to get everybody on the record I'm going to do the useless thing which is everybody's Super Bowl picks so we can just have a recording of it.

[00:39:08] Later on we can all look super foolish. Let's go around the horn just give me your match up in that that big game and we'll dig out the audio when we get to the end of the season.

[00:39:20] David Collins who's playing for the Lombardi trophy.

[00:39:25] The Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers.

[00:39:28] You just can't bring yourself there can you just can't I can't I will never until it happens I won't I'm good.

[00:39:36] Josh.

[00:39:39] I will say it I got the lines and I was flipped between the Ravens and the Chiefs Ravens is my first answer to choose who I want because I want what we should have had last year.

[00:39:51] Billy.

[00:39:56] Yeah I'm going to Lions and I think they're going to wind up playing.

[00:40:04] I'm pulling a rabbit out of my hat here but I think they're going to wind up playing Miami.

[00:40:10] The Hurricanes or the Dolphins.

[00:40:12] Wow that is a Super Bowl that's a fun Super Bowl.

[00:40:17] Yes.

[00:40:18] I don't know where the game is this year is it in Miami I have no idea.

[00:40:21] I'll go Orleans I think.

[00:40:24] Yes you're right.

[00:40:25] Oh yeah and I'm going with the Lions they're they're going to finally they're going to do it.

[00:40:32] You know they finished last year.

[00:40:35] Much like the 85 Bears did in 84.

[00:40:41] I'm just I'm just throwing that out there now we're a little differently in that we're more leaning offensively than defensively but they finished strong and they're the they're the little fun Cinderella pick this year and I just think this is the year.

[00:40:56] Can you hear the warning voice of a David Collins trying to talk you off that ledge.

[00:41:02] I care about you.

[00:41:04] Don't do it.

[00:41:05] It's all right.

[00:41:06] It's it's it's fun to just even say it and actually have some backing behind it.

[00:41:13] Randy what's your pick.

[00:41:15] So I'm also going to go the Lions.

[00:41:18] And I was going to go.

[00:41:21] I was also thinking Ravens but when David said that I want to go I want to switch it up because I was I was going to go Detroit Ravens but then when I heard David say Ravens I thought about somebody else.

[00:41:30] I'm going to go outside the box and say Houston.

[00:41:34] They're good.

[00:41:35] Yeah Paul Miller.

[00:41:37] Yeah they are good.

[00:41:38] Yeah I'm picking the Ravens and I was going to pick the Niners and then I saw the Applebee's commercial and I am totally going with the Detroit Lions.

[00:41:46] That is a good.

[00:41:47] Of the Applebee commercial.

[00:41:50] Camel.

[00:41:51] It's just so good.

[00:41:52] Here's the only reason I'm not going to pick the Lions in my preseason prediction is because Sports Illustrated did and that bothers me.

[00:42:02] I understand SI is barely a publication.

[00:42:05] In fact I don't really know if they still go to print on a weekly basis.

[00:42:09] They might just do special editions throughout the year but I saw the picture had the Lions in that very cool.

[00:42:15] I think it was a Thunderbird and they had I mean it was a really cool picture.

[00:42:18] Yeah.

[00:42:19] And the prediction was front cover and it wasn't just a regional cover it was the national cover even if they don't print magazines anymore still counts and to me that's the kiss of death.

[00:42:29] So I can't I just can't go with the SI world so I guess for lack of a different option I'll go San Fran and on the other side you know Kansas City is really really good.

[00:42:42] I don't see Lamar Jackson being able to survive the physical beating that he's going to take as the team's primary rusher.

[00:42:52] That is really tough position to put your franchise quarterback in and maybe I'm wrong.

[00:42:57] He's an incredible player.

[00:42:58] I just I said such a physical game all it takes is one big hit from a Hutchinson type of guy and all of a sudden John Harbaugh is looking at the sidelines going did we did we hire a backup quarterback.

[00:43:11] You know who would that be so good good football stuff and for those of you who are loving football talk again we'll have more NFL centric conversation coming up next week but let's move over to our Holy Discontent and for those of you guys on the podcast need to get back to something you're welcome to do that

[00:43:29] but if you want to vent blow off some steam well this is that time.

[00:43:38] I'm to blow off some steam get it off your chest rant about what's most bothering you.

[00:43:43] I got a lot of problems with you people.

[00:43:46] Now you're going to hear about it.

[00:43:47] It's time for Holy Discontent.

[00:43:50] Paul Miller go ahead.

[00:43:53] Yeah my Holy Discontent is with NCAA football coaching hot seats after one week of the season.

[00:44:01] I don't get it.

[00:44:02] Maybe it's I'm a little bit jaded because I've heard about people talking about Ryan Debian on the hot seat for months if not years and making fun of the $20 million just because he's the only coach that's brave enough to talk about the money they're spending and all that kind of stuff.

[00:44:20] He is not on the hot seat.

[00:44:22] Billy Napier is but I don't want those guys talking about it.

[00:44:26] I just want them to let him coach.

[00:44:29] Davos Sweeney put himself on the hot seat and Mike Norvell of course is I don't know if his seat could get any hotter but I just think they should let those guys coach the media and the fans should just let the guys coach and have those conversations after this season is over.

[00:44:48] That's all I got David.

[00:44:50] Yeah, mine is we talked about him a little bit earlier Ward manual.

[00:44:54] I can't stand him as an athletic director and I know everybody hates their athletic director but the fact that no coaches are being paid and he was the reason Jim Harbaugh ran off and all these different things about him.

[00:45:08] I cannot stand the fact that he's still running everything at that university it bothers me and I'm never going to be not upset about it and by the way I agree with you.

[00:45:22] Ryan Day should not be on the hot seat.

[00:45:24] He's done everything right.

[00:45:26] Thank you.

[00:45:27] Billy Walker.

[00:45:30] Oh man my discontent is you know this is old guy get off my grass so but I'm tired of the NFL broadening their telecast to so many people.

[00:45:52] So many streaming services.

[00:45:55] So that now you have to have all kinds of streams unless of course your day.

[00:46:05] But for those of us that want to keep our computer virus free you know you've got to have all these streams in order to watch the games I just think that's dumb.

[00:46:15] That drives me crazy.

[00:46:16] Yeah I'm with you.

[00:46:17] You can't flip between games during the commercial because you got to log in and log out of whatever stream.

[00:46:22] Yeah it's such a pain.

[00:46:25] You could always put another TV in the room.

[00:46:30] That's a bad right there.

[00:46:32] If I lived in a dorm I'm sure.

[00:46:34] Duke education everybody.

[00:46:35] Duke education.

[00:46:37] There you go.

[00:46:38] He's worth.

[00:46:40] He's Randy before you joined the podcast.

[00:46:43] Josh was telling us how easy it was to convert some of the money from his meal plan into a best buy gift card and he went out and got an 84 inch TV.

[00:46:52] I don't know if I was supposed to say that or not.

[00:46:55] He kind of told us that in confidence but Josh your Josh your holy discontent.

[00:47:00] Well I have two ones a personal one.

[00:47:03] I unfortunately did not get a Monro St. Brown on my fantasy team and I'm pretty torn off about it.

[00:47:10] And the second one would probably be Minnesota not finishing the job against UNC because I still would like to see them lose.

[00:47:18] Which one was personal?

[00:47:21] Both are personal.

[00:47:23] Randy.

[00:47:25] Yeah and then Minnesota decided to spike the ball on their miss field goal by letting off fireworks even though they missed it.

[00:47:32] Those were fireworks were just getting close.

[00:47:34] It was just he got so close let's celebrate together.

[00:47:37] Randy what's your holy discontent?

[00:47:39] I echo everything David Collins said.

[00:47:42] I mean Ward manual has to be the worst athletic director in all of college sports.

[00:47:47] I don't understand how the man has a job.

[00:47:49] Anybody who thought I mean maybe Harbaugh would have left anyway but the fact that he can't even have Sharon Moore's contract done at this point in time and we're working on it.

[00:47:58] I heard that for Jim Harbaugh for 18 months so it's making me question his leadership abilities.

[00:48:06] I think they're waiting because they don't want to get stuck with a buyout and who know I just oh my goodness.

[00:48:10] Okay my holy discontent believe it or not this is my first ever holy discontent connecting to the WNBA.

[00:48:19] It's new territory.

[00:48:20] I know I feel like a pioneer.

[00:48:22] I don't care much about the league but there's a really good young player in the league that will probably win rookie of the year.

[00:48:30] Her name is Caitlin.

[00:48:31] Caitlin Clark I don't know if you've heard of her.

[00:48:33] She's kind of the Steph Curry of ladies basketball this season in the WNBA 17% of all of the leagues flagrant fouls have been committed against Caitlin Clark.

[00:48:50] Really?

[00:48:51] That's unbelievable to me.

[00:48:53] I don't understand how on earth that league is not doing something more to protect her.

[00:48:59] In the NBA that kind of thing resulted in rule changes and the bad boys could no longer do things like the Jordan rules but in the WNBA have at it girls just go and try to knock this gal's block off.

[00:49:14] She just gets up doesn't say anything hits another three runs back down the court pretty much.

[00:49:20] Her teammates don't seem to come to her aid either.

[00:49:23] I mean they just kind of let her sit there by herself.

[00:49:26] Well I think there's some personal like they're upset that the WNBA is getting more coverage than it's ever gotten.

[00:49:34] They're upset that they've been around and nobody's been watching.

[00:49:37] But I think it's a little more personal than just being good.

[00:49:40] Can you imagine?

[00:49:41] Yeah for sure.

[00:49:42] Yeah but hurt her and their ratings are going to go down.

[00:49:44] Thank you.

[00:49:45] And the private jets the chartered flights the increase the 10x increase in salaries is all connected to the girl you're trying to injure.

[00:49:56] There's there's a logical pathway that I would love to see somebody put on a whiteboard for me and just draw it out how that makes any sense.

[00:50:03] Okay Paul we're running short on time so just a couple of quick hits on the headline to the week for everybody who had direct TV at the opening kick right?

[00:50:14] Of the college football season.

[00:50:16] Right before the USC LSU game.

[00:50:20] They pulled the plug.

[00:50:22] Yes TV said we no longer have Disney as a part of our channel lined up.

[00:50:27] So sorry all of you they wanted to watch ESPN.

[00:50:31] I think they checked this afternoon and last I saw they still have not resolved their money grab conflict that the two of them are arm wrestling over so who loses once again the fans.

[00:50:42] Although those fans did not get to watch Florida State so maybe they're actually thankful in the long run.

[00:50:47] And the only other thing and David this is really for you one of the great athletes in the nation once again delivered excellence greatness as Joey Chestnut puts away 83 hot dogs to defeat Kobayashi on Netflix.

[00:51:04] This strikes me as something that you would appreciate are you a Joey Chestnut fan?

[00:51:09] Yeah, I mean you got to appreciate greatness in its time enjoy it while it's happening not look back on it and go oh I should have appreciated that.

[00:51:21] I'm very happy that he went out there and dominated but you know at the same time it is just eating hot dogs so I don't know how much I should enjoy it.

[00:51:32] Is it a sport?

[00:51:33] Is he an athlete?

[00:51:36] I mean I'm watching Derek Henry on my screen right now and I would say no in comparison to a guy like that.

[00:51:46] Well what would happen if Derek Henry tried to eat 83 hot dogs?

[00:51:50] If he did it I'd be proud of him but if he kept the same body he has that's true.

[00:51:57] Let me quickly do a that guy then we'll get into our three minute message.

[00:52:00] Right now this minute today this week I am the man!

[00:52:08] Paul I'm going to share that guy with you because we both have the same one it is Scotty Schaeffler.

[00:52:14] Scotty Schaeffler just won the tour championship this season he won the Masters, the Players Championship, the Tour Championship and Olympic Gold Medal.

[00:52:22] He won seven times on tour, won everything in sight, got arrested at a major for a charge so ridiculous that it was dismissed, the officer was suspended and another one of the arresting officers just got arrested last week for committing a crime.

[00:52:37] And Scotty still has quite a sense of humor in the process of winning the Tour Championship he hit one bad shot.

[00:52:45] It was in a bunker and he hit a shank it was a complete it was a Randy Gilmer ask shank that would have gone through the clubhouse window at the Newberry Country Club if he had been playing up there.

[00:52:56] And afterwards after Scotty had just won this capstone of the season and a by the way a single season performance a little bit better scoring wise and win wise than anything Tiger ever had in a single season.

[00:53:15] That's ridiculous.

[00:53:16] Bill I saw that his earnings this year would have placed him just this year alone would have placed him number nine on the career earnings list in PGA Tour history.

[00:53:25] Yeah, the money money's gotten crazy.

[00:53:26] Scotty's had a great year and then the post round press conference.

[00:53:30] A reporter said instead of asking him about the incredible year and incredible win.

[00:53:35] He just wanted to know about the shank shanked it.

[00:53:40] Why did you shake it?

[00:53:42] So there's a the club like there's this straight part of the face and then over here is the hosel.

[00:53:47] And on that one specifically I caught too much of that part of the face.

[00:53:52] That's why I went to the right so it's shaped kind of you know a little curve.

[00:53:57] So like if I hit the straight part it's going to go that way.

[00:54:00] This is Scotty doing the equivalent of somebody saying hey Josh how did you get hit by that car and Josh giving him a 40 second description of how I stepped off the sidewalk and then I saw the Prius coming and then I got hit by it.

[00:54:11] That's kind of what Scotty was doing there.

[00:54:13] So he's always kept a sense of humor, very humble guy and one of my favorite athletes in all of sports.

[00:54:21] So he's my he's our that guy for this week.

[00:54:25] Okay, we're going to wrap things up with a three minute message and let you guys back get back to watching the fourth quarter of the game.

[00:54:31] So Paul take it away.

[00:54:33] Homer I'd like you to remember Matthew seven twenty six, the foolish man who built his house on sound.

[00:54:40] And you remember Matthew twenty one seventeen and he left them and went out of the city in Tibetani and he lodged there.

[00:54:53] Yeah, think about it.

[00:54:56] Think about it.

[00:54:57] Okay, so I just have a verse for us today Romans 12 verse 20.

[00:55:02] If your enemy is hungry feed him if he's thirsty give him something to drink in doing this.

[00:55:08] You will heap burning coals on his head why this verse because every time Caitlin Clark gets on the microphone and is asked about the way she's being treated by other NBA WNBA players by the media, whatever it is.

[00:55:26] She always seems to figure out a way to turn the other cheek or compliment the person who just insulted her or whatever. And I love the way she's handling all that she's classed all the way.

[00:55:41] And I think we can all learn something from her example which is the truth in Romans 12 which is when somebody does you wrong, do them right.

[00:55:51] And you might win that person back or at least you're going to give them something to think about so that's our that's our truth for today let's apply that in our lives this week when we have opportunities to do so and that's all I got.

[00:56:07] Because that was super fun. Thanks for everybody doing it at some of you at the last minute like Randy who's still sitting in the car probably got a ticket for loitering too far too long there in the church parking lot.

[00:56:17] David good to see you thank you so much and feel free to send the link to the other guys who don't have any sort of cable plan to watch all the games.

[00:56:25] Josh we want to know the minute you get your test results back should they ever decide to score them and kind of let you know how it turned out we're wishing for the best for you.

[00:56:34] Randy if I see Ward on the Saturday at the game I will give him your very best.

[00:56:40] And how are you going?

[00:56:42] Yeah, yeah and one last note congratulations.

[00:56:45] Are you going to college game day?

[00:56:47] I'm going to go to a pregame festivities for one of my radio affiliates and then stop by another set and we'll make the road.

[00:56:56] So no so in other words no you're not going to college game day.

[00:56:58] I didn't want to ruin it but I'm the guest picker this week church people church people has gotten very very big you and Pat Mackinac.

[00:57:06] Yeah, and congratulations to Billy to Lori and to Kaylee and Eric the first grandchild in the family there and Billy give us the vitals the stats here as we go.

[00:57:18] He is McKenna Zion Croft and she weighed about six and a half pounds at birth and just a little bundle of joyful perfection.

[00:57:33] Very cool well congratulations.

[00:57:36] There's one.

[00:57:37] There's a brief there's a late breaking update from Randy Gilmour.

[00:57:41] Okay we're going to wrap this things up.

[00:57:43] Thanks guys see we don't do a lot of live scores on the podcast but good stuff.
