[00:00:20] Well, it's been seven weeks since we've been, well, at least seven weeks since we've been in the Gospel of John.

[00:00:26] And that's where we started, oh, a while back.

[00:00:29] And we've been going through the Gospel of John verse by verse, expositionally.

[00:00:34] Took a break, looking at the seven churches in Revelation.

[00:00:37] And I hope that was beneficial for us.

[00:00:39] It was for me.

[00:00:40] Just to look at the different churches that Christ wrote a letter to and had something to say about.

[00:00:46] And how that affects our church, or our hearts, and our relationship with Him.

[00:00:53] But now we fall back into John.

[00:00:56] We're in John 13.

[00:00:58] This is where Jesus' public ministry ends and His private ministry begins.

[00:01:05] In the last few chapters, just to remind us about where we are, in John 10, we remember Jesus calls Himself the Good Shepherd.

[00:01:13] And we are His sheep.

[00:01:14] And He looks at that interaction between the sheep and the shepherd, the only good shepherd.

[00:01:20] And then in John 11, we have the account of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead.

[00:01:25] And how that affected the Pharisees and the Jewish leadership.

[00:01:29] We moved into John 12.

[00:01:31] Where we saw Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey.

[00:01:37] And now the Jewish leaders have set out to kill Him.

[00:01:42] In John 13, Jesus' public ministry essentially is over.

[00:01:46] He's completed it.

[00:01:48] He's come to do what He did, and He did it.

[00:01:50] He let the world know, basically, and the leadership know the gospel.

[00:01:55] And take it or leave it, His work is complete.

[00:01:58] It's done.

[00:01:58] And now He moves toward those that He is closest to.

[00:02:01] His family, His friends, His disciples.

[00:02:03] And this will be for the next eight chapters, the last week of Jesus' life.

[00:02:10] In verse 36 of chapter 12, just before we begin today, John writes that Jesus departed and hid Himself from them.

[00:02:18] From the Pharisees, from the Jewish leaders.

[00:02:21] He went away and He hid Himself.

[00:02:24] He departed.

[00:02:24] He left them.

[00:02:27] And now He's focused on His friends.

[00:02:29] So we'll begin reading in John chapter 13.

[00:02:32] Please turn there if you have your Bibles.

[00:02:34] Beginning in verse 1.

[00:02:37] And John writes,

[00:02:59] Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going back to God, rose from supper.

[00:03:08] He laid aside His outer garments and, taking a towel, tied it around His waist.

[00:03:14] Then He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around Him.

[00:03:22] He came to Simon Peter, who said to Him,

[00:03:24] Lord, do you wash my feet?

[00:03:27] Jesus answered him,

[00:03:29] What I'm doing, you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.

[00:03:35] And Peter said to Him,

[00:03:37] You shall never wash my feet.

[00:03:39] Jesus answered him,

[00:03:40] If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.

[00:03:44] And Simon Peter said to Him,

[00:03:46] Lord, not my feet also, but my hands and my head also.

[00:03:50] Jesus said to him,

[00:03:52] The one who has bathed does not need to wash except for his feet, but is completely clean.

[00:03:59] And you are clean, but not every one of you.

[00:04:03] For He knew who was to betray Him.

[00:04:06] That was why He said,

[00:04:07] Not all of you are clean.

[00:04:09] When He had washed their feet and put on His outer garments and resumed His place,

[00:04:13] He said to them,

[00:04:14] Do you understand what I have done to you?

[00:04:17] You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am.

[00:04:22] If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.

[00:04:28] For I have given you an example that you also should do, just as I have done to you.

[00:04:33] Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master,

[00:04:37] nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.

[00:04:41] If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

[00:04:46] I am not speaking of all of you.

[00:04:49] I know whom I have chosen.

[00:04:52] But the scripture will be fulfilled.

[00:04:54] He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.

[00:04:57] I am telling you this now before it takes place,

[00:04:59] that when it does take place, you may believe that I am He.

[00:05:03] Truly, truly, I say to you,

[00:05:04] whoever receives the one I send receives me,

[00:05:08] and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.

[00:05:13] This is God's word.

[00:05:15] Let's pray.

[00:05:17] Father in heaven,

[00:05:20] we're about to go into an amazing example of your love for us.

[00:05:25] Pray that we comprehend it clearly,

[00:05:28] and that we can learn from this,

[00:05:30] and have a better, closer, more appreciative relationship with you because of it.

[00:05:36] Holy Spirit, lead us.

[00:05:37] We pray in Jesus' name.

[00:05:38] Amen.

[00:05:41] As we begin to look at this passage,

[00:05:44] keep in mind,

[00:05:47] we talked about this in a few different examples leading up to this in John.

[00:05:52] Jesus is not just giving us a cute, nice story.

[00:05:57] Remember back in John 10 with the sheep and the shepherd,

[00:06:01] it's not just a nice story about sheep.

[00:06:04] There's a deep meaning there about how God calls His people.

[00:06:06] He knows them by name, those types of things.

[00:06:08] That's theology.

[00:06:10] Like how the Lord fed the 5,000.

[00:06:13] It wasn't just a great story and a great miracle.

[00:06:17] Though it was, it wasn't only that.

[00:06:19] He was showing us who is the true manna from heaven,

[00:06:22] the true bread of life.

[00:06:24] He goes in overboard, as we see it,

[00:06:28] in His object lessons for us.

[00:06:30] The woman at the well.

[00:06:31] It's not just about a woman getting a drink.

[00:06:33] It's about He's the living water.

[00:06:35] There's messages in these things.

[00:06:36] And so here, don't forget about that.

[00:06:38] But He's sending us a message here today.

[00:06:40] He's showing us something.

[00:06:42] And so as we go through, think about what is He showing us?

[00:06:46] You know how they say, if you're writing a book or writing a newspaper article,

[00:06:51] they tell writers, don't tell, show.

[00:06:54] They say, show, don't tell.

[00:06:56] Show me.

[00:06:57] I want to feel like I was there.

[00:06:58] Don't just tell me what happened.

[00:07:00] So He's showing us something here today.

[00:07:03] So let's begin reading.

[00:07:05] In verse 1.

[00:07:06] Now before the feast of the Passover,

[00:07:08] when Jesus knew that His hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father,

[00:07:12] having loved His own who were in the world,

[00:07:15] He loved them to the end.

[00:07:19] This is the week of Passover.

[00:07:21] And this is the third Passover we read about in Jesus' life.

[00:07:25] And it says that Jesus knew.

[00:07:28] He knew that this was the hour that He had come for.

[00:07:32] And He knew where He had come from.

[00:07:33] And He knew where He was going.

[00:07:35] He knew these things.

[00:07:36] Not like a normal human being.

[00:07:38] He had supernatural knowledge.

[00:07:40] At this point, He knew the plan.

[00:07:43] He probably didn't know the plan when He was a little baby in Bethlehem.

[00:07:47] But as He grew, He knew.

[00:07:49] And the Father showed Him,

[00:07:52] this hour is the purpose for your life on earth.

[00:07:56] And He knew that.

[00:07:57] He knew the mission.

[00:08:00] He knew the assignment.

[00:08:04] And He was ready for it.

[00:08:07] In John chapter 17, the high priestly prayer,

[00:08:10] when Jesus is in Gethsemane,

[00:08:13] try that three times.

[00:08:16] When Jesus was praying in the Garden of Gethsemane,

[00:08:20] He said this in John 17, verse 5.

[00:08:22] He said,

[00:08:23] Father, glorify me in Your own presence

[00:08:25] with the glory that I had with You

[00:08:26] before the world existed.

[00:08:29] He knew where He came from.

[00:08:31] And He knew He was going back there.

[00:08:34] John says He loved His own.

[00:08:35] He loved them to the end.

[00:08:36] And isn't that how Christ loves us?

[00:08:38] All the way.

[00:08:39] To the utmost.

[00:08:42] Right to the end.

[00:08:43] If you're taking notes,

[00:08:44] your first note here says,

[00:08:45] Jesus knew exactly who He was

[00:08:48] and what He was doing.

[00:08:50] And He did it out of His great love for us.

[00:08:54] When we go through times that are confusing for us,

[00:08:58] we sometimes talk to Jesus the way we talk to a friend.

[00:09:01] And we say,

[00:09:03] what are you doing?

[00:09:04] Do you know what you're doing?

[00:09:06] It looks like you don't know what you're doing.

[00:09:09] Well, Jesus knew exactly what He was doing.

[00:09:11] And even today, He knows what He's doing in your life.

[00:09:14] So if something is confusing and you say,

[00:09:16] God, do you even know what you're doing up there?

[00:09:19] Think twice.

[00:09:20] He's not just a friend that you work with.

[00:09:23] He's God Almighty.

[00:09:24] And He knows what He's doing.

[00:09:26] And it's interesting how the song lyrics this morning

[00:09:28] touch on that here and there.

[00:09:31] You know, the hardest part about trusting God

[00:09:32] is trusting God.

[00:09:34] I just have to trust Him.

[00:09:35] And I have to train myself to trust Him.

[00:09:36] And He trains us to trust Him at times.

[00:09:39] How?

[00:09:40] By giving us little things to go through

[00:09:41] that are a little strenuous at times.

[00:09:43] And we have to trust God through that.

[00:09:45] And you know what?

[00:09:46] He gets us through those times.

[00:09:47] And so then something greater comes

[00:09:49] that is harder for us.

[00:09:51] It's going to take a little more trust.

[00:09:53] And then we get through that

[00:09:54] and our trust builds.

[00:09:55] And then something that seems like

[00:09:56] it's the end of your world comes.

[00:09:58] Are you still going to trust Him?

[00:10:00] Do you think He knows what He's doing?

[00:10:03] Well, He does.

[00:10:05] He knows exactly who He is,

[00:10:07] what He's doing,

[00:10:07] and why He's doing it,

[00:10:08] even though we don't know why.

[00:10:12] Let's go on to verse 2.

[00:10:14] During supper,

[00:10:17] when the devil had already put into the heart

[00:10:18] of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son,

[00:10:21] to betray Him,

[00:10:22] Jesus, again,

[00:10:23] knowing that the Father had given

[00:10:25] all things into His hands

[00:10:27] and that He had come from God

[00:10:29] and was going back to God,

[00:10:30] He knew all these things.

[00:10:32] He rose from supper.

[00:10:35] He laid aside His outer garments

[00:10:36] and taking a towel,

[00:10:38] tied it around His waist.

[00:10:39] Then He poured water into a basin

[00:10:41] and began to wash the disciples' feet

[00:10:43] and to wipe them with the towel

[00:10:45] that was wrapped around Him.

[00:10:49] Again, John is showing us

[00:10:50] Jesus' supernatural knowledge here.

[00:10:52] He knows way more than the disciples do

[00:10:54] about everything.

[00:10:57] And He knows that God's plan

[00:10:59] is about to work out perfectly.

[00:11:02] And He knows He's going to walk through it

[00:11:04] for us,

[00:11:05] for you and for me.

[00:11:06] He knew He had come from the Father.

[00:11:08] He knew He was going back there.

[00:11:10] And John writes here a few things.

[00:11:12] And I want you to take note of these things

[00:11:14] that Jesus does.

[00:11:15] He rose from supper.

[00:11:17] Okay?

[00:11:18] No big deal.

[00:11:19] What does this look like?

[00:11:20] The Last Supper?

[00:11:23] This isn't the Last Supper,

[00:11:24] but at any dining experience

[00:11:27] back in the first century,

[00:11:29] at least with the disciples,

[00:11:29] we see many times,

[00:11:31] you'll see the Lord was at table.

[00:11:32] He'll say,

[00:11:33] He's at the table.

[00:11:33] The table's usually on the floor.

[00:11:35] They don't have chairs,

[00:11:36] usually back then as we do here.

[00:11:38] They're on the floor,

[00:11:39] reclining with some comfortable tapestries

[00:11:44] or blankets or pillows,

[00:11:45] whatever it might be.

[00:11:46] But you're comfortable.

[00:11:47] You eat.

[00:11:48] How do you feel after you eat?

[00:11:49] You know that time after you have dinner

[00:11:50] with friends and family?

[00:11:52] You kind of eat.

[00:11:53] And you're done eating.

[00:11:54] Well, you don't get up right away.

[00:11:56] You kind of hang out by the table

[00:11:57] and kick back,

[00:11:58] have a cup of coffee,

[00:11:59] a piece of pie,

[00:12:00] whatever,

[00:12:00] and you just relax.

[00:12:01] That's the time where you're

[00:12:02] most comfortable, probably.

[00:12:05] Your loved ones are nearby.

[00:12:06] You're having a few laughs,

[00:12:08] reminiscing,

[00:12:08] and that's the best place to be.

[00:12:10] Your belly's full.

[00:12:12] And that's where Jesus was here.

[00:12:14] They just ate.

[00:12:16] The first thing on this particular list,

[00:12:18] John Rice,

[00:12:19] is that He rose from supper.

[00:12:20] So it's at that moment,

[00:12:22] everyone's happy and content.

[00:12:23] He gets up.

[00:12:26] He lays aside his outer garments.

[00:12:30] Okay.

[00:12:32] He took up a towel

[00:12:35] and He secured it to Himself.

[00:12:36] He tied it around Himself.

[00:12:38] Just picture this happening.

[00:12:41] Then He goes

[00:12:42] and He washes the disciples' feet

[00:12:44] with that towel.

[00:12:47] Then He puts back on

[00:12:48] His outer garments

[00:12:49] and He goes back

[00:12:51] to sit down

[00:12:52] in His place

[00:12:53] where He was resting before.

[00:12:55] Simple, right?

[00:12:56] Okay, well,

[00:12:58] there's no more to the story, right?

[00:13:00] I mean, we just read it.

[00:13:00] We get it.

[00:13:01] He got up and He washed the feet

[00:13:03] and He sat back down.

[00:13:05] What's really there for us to see?

[00:13:08] What's He showing us?

[00:13:10] And I want you to hold that thought

[00:13:11] as we go.

[00:13:13] Verse 6.

[00:13:15] He came to Simon Peter

[00:13:17] who said to Him,

[00:13:18] Lord,

[00:13:19] do you wash my feet?

[00:13:22] Jesus answered him,

[00:13:23] what I'm doing

[00:13:24] you do not understand now.

[00:13:26] But afterward,

[00:13:28] you'll understand.

[00:13:31] And I want you to understand

[00:13:32] the washing of feet

[00:13:34] was a typical practice

[00:13:35] back in that culture

[00:13:36] in those days.

[00:13:36] This wasn't a strange thing.

[00:13:37] It would happen all the time.

[00:13:39] I mean,

[00:13:39] they're in

[00:13:42] Canaan, basically,

[00:13:43] Israel,

[00:13:43] where it's dusty a lot.

[00:13:45] A lot of rocks,

[00:13:45] dust,

[00:13:46] and people went back and forth.

[00:13:47] They had sandals

[00:13:48] and their feet would get

[00:13:50] dusty and dirty

[00:13:50] and if there was a little,

[00:13:52] if they walked through a puddle

[00:13:52] they'd get muddy

[00:13:53] and then they'd get

[00:13:54] crusted mud on their feet

[00:13:55] and sometimes it was pretty gross.

[00:13:58] So they had to wash their feet.

[00:13:59] And if someone was in a home

[00:14:01] that could afford

[00:14:01] to have a servant,

[00:14:03] the lowest servant

[00:14:05] would wash the people's feet,

[00:14:06] the visitor's feet.

[00:14:07] And it was a typical thing to do.

[00:14:09] So it wasn't a strange thing.

[00:14:11] It was a cultural thing.

[00:14:12] A hospitable thing.

[00:14:15] And if you think back

[00:14:16] to the first chapter of John,

[00:14:18] when John the Baptist

[00:14:19] was talking about Jesus,

[00:14:20] remember what he said

[00:14:21] in verse 26 of chapter 1?

[00:14:23] He said,

[00:14:24] I baptize with water

[00:14:25] but among you stands one

[00:14:26] you don't know.

[00:14:27] Even he who comes after me,

[00:14:29] the strap,

[00:14:30] whose sandal,

[00:14:30] I'm not worthy to untie.

[00:14:33] I'm not even worthy

[00:14:35] to be the lowest servant

[00:14:37] to wash Jesus' feet.

[00:14:39] John the Baptist

[00:14:40] is announcing Christ.

[00:14:42] And he understands

[00:14:43] this cultural practice.

[00:14:46] And John the Baptist says,

[00:14:48] I'm not even that worthy.

[00:14:51] He knew who Jesus was too.

[00:14:54] But here's Peter.

[00:14:56] I think Peter's a person

[00:14:57] we can all relate to.

[00:15:00] Peter says,

[00:15:01] you wash my feet?

[00:15:02] No way.

[00:15:02] I won't let it happen.

[00:15:04] Nope.

[00:15:05] Well,

[00:15:06] your next note here says

[00:15:07] that Jesus is giving us

[00:15:09] an example of being willing

[00:15:10] to be humble

[00:15:12] and to serve.

[00:15:15] Willing to be humble.

[00:15:17] Willing to serve.

[00:15:18] Well,

[00:15:19] this message was

[00:15:20] upside down for Peter

[00:15:21] and it's contrary

[00:15:23] to our pride-filled world

[00:15:25] and it just didn't seem right

[00:15:28] to Peter.

[00:15:28] He thought,

[00:15:29] I think Jesus might have been mistaken.

[00:15:31] I think he might have thought

[00:15:32] that Jesus shouldn't be doing this.

[00:15:36] But we have to understand

[00:15:37] Jesus knows what he's doing.

[00:15:41] And I think it's probably fair to say

[00:15:43] that we in our own lives

[00:15:44] have taken Peter's approach

[00:15:46] to life

[00:15:47] where his approach

[00:15:49] would probably be something like,

[00:15:50] ready, shoot, aim

[00:15:51] for Peter.

[00:15:53] Talk before you think.

[00:15:55] Act out of emotion

[00:15:56] before you really know

[00:15:57] what's happening.

[00:15:59] He says

[00:16:01] in Matthew 16

[00:16:02] when he rebuked Jesus.

[00:16:04] Remember when he rebuked him?

[00:16:06] After Jesus told him

[00:16:07] that he would have to be killed,

[00:16:08] Peter took Jesus aside

[00:16:10] in Matthew 16

[00:16:12] and began to rebuke him

[00:16:13] saying,

[00:16:14] far be it from you, Lord.

[00:16:15] This shall never happen to you.

[00:16:17] Jesus says,

[00:16:17] look, I have to die.

[00:16:19] And Peter says,

[00:16:20] no, don't.

[00:16:20] No, far be it from you.

[00:16:21] Don't do it.

[00:16:22] And he's rebuking Jesus

[00:16:24] because Peter thinks

[00:16:24] he knows better

[00:16:26] than Jesus.

[00:16:29] Or like Peter

[00:16:31] reacting before thinking

[00:16:32] in the garden

[00:16:33] when Jesus was becoming

[00:16:34] or being arrested,

[00:16:36] he cut off Malchus' ear.

[00:16:38] Remember that?

[00:16:39] Peter was thinking

[00:16:40] he was doing the right thing,

[00:16:42] defending Christ,

[00:16:43] and he cut off Malchus' ear

[00:16:45] out of emotion

[00:16:46] and Jesus admonished him

[00:16:48] and he healed the ear

[00:16:49] and he said,

[00:16:49] put the sword away.

[00:16:52] This has to happen.

[00:16:54] But Peter thought

[00:16:55] he knew better.

[00:16:57] Peter said,

[00:16:58] let me take care

[00:16:59] of this Jesus.

[00:17:00] I'll make it right.

[00:17:01] Jesus says,

[00:17:02] just sit down.

[00:17:03] I think we do that sometimes.

[00:17:06] You know,

[00:17:06] we'll cry out to God

[00:17:07] even in our hearts

[00:17:08] and say,

[00:17:08] God, what is happening?

[00:17:09] What are you doing?

[00:17:10] I don't understand.

[00:17:12] And Jesus tells his disciples here,

[00:17:14] what I am doing,

[00:17:15] you don't understand.

[00:17:16] Not now,

[00:17:17] but you will later.

[00:17:19] So what does that mean?

[00:17:20] That means trust comes in here.

[00:17:22] Trust comes in

[00:17:22] to fill that gap

[00:17:23] of I don't understand

[00:17:24] now,

[00:17:25] but I will later.

[00:17:26] So what do you want us

[00:17:27] to do right now,

[00:17:27] Lord?

[00:17:27] I want you to trust me

[00:17:29] between those two points

[00:17:30] in time.

[00:17:31] I don't understand.

[00:17:32] I do understand.

[00:17:33] In the meantime,

[00:17:35] you could also fill

[00:17:35] that space with doubt.

[00:17:37] You could also fill

[00:17:38] that space with

[00:17:39] questioning

[00:17:41] or contempt

[00:17:42] toward God.

[00:17:45] Peter acted

[00:17:45] out of emotion.

[00:17:47] Peter didn't understand.

[00:17:49] And we're like Peter

[00:17:50] a lot.

[00:17:55] And as Jesus proceeded

[00:17:56] then to wash Peter's feet,

[00:17:58] he said to him,

[00:17:59] what I'm doing,

[00:18:00] you don't understand.

[00:18:02] Not now,

[00:18:03] but later you will.

[00:18:05] Later you will understand.

[00:18:09] And I think Jesus

[00:18:10] would say the same thing

[00:18:11] to us.

[00:18:16] When we see things happening,

[00:18:17] we don't understand.

[00:18:19] And we don't know

[00:18:20] why they're happening.

[00:18:22] And we don't know

[00:18:23] what's going to happen next.

[00:18:25] Imagine Jesus saying

[00:18:26] to us,

[00:18:28] look,

[00:18:28] I know you don't

[00:18:29] understand right now.

[00:18:30] Look,

[00:18:30] I know you don't

[00:18:31] get this right now,

[00:18:32] but you will.

[00:18:34] You'll understand later.

[00:18:37] Just trust me.

[00:18:39] For now,

[00:18:40] trust me.

[00:18:44] Your next note says,

[00:18:45] when you don't understand

[00:18:46] what Jesus is doing

[00:18:48] or why,

[00:18:48] and that's all of us

[00:18:50] sometimes,

[00:18:51] don't doubt.

[00:18:53] Trust.

[00:18:54] Don't doubt him.

[00:18:55] Trust him.

[00:18:59] Don't question him.

[00:19:00] It's okay to say,

[00:19:01] God,

[00:19:02] why is this happening?

[00:19:03] It's not a sin

[00:19:04] to say that.

[00:19:05] But don't doubt

[00:19:06] that he's got you

[00:19:08] safely in his arms

[00:19:10] or that he's wavering

[00:19:12] on getting you through,

[00:19:13] getting you over it.

[00:19:14] Trust him.

[00:19:16] Trust him.

[00:19:17] We've all been there.

[00:19:19] There are things

[00:19:19] happening in my life

[00:19:20] and in my friends' lives

[00:19:21] that are hard to understand.

[00:19:23] And in fact,

[00:19:24] we really can't say

[00:19:25] that we do understand

[00:19:26] all of it.

[00:19:28] And we have to be okay

[00:19:28] with not knowing sometimes

[00:19:30] as adults

[00:19:32] because kids want to know

[00:19:33] why, why, why, why, why.

[00:19:34] We all have the kids.

[00:19:35] Why, why, why?

[00:19:36] You know what?

[00:19:36] I don't know.

[00:19:37] I don't know why.

[00:19:38] Just do what I say.

[00:19:39] Just obey your father,

[00:19:40] your mother.

[00:19:41] Right?

[00:19:41] We've been there.

[00:19:43] And just like our father

[00:19:44] in heaven is probably

[00:19:45] just, you know,

[00:19:45] thinking to some

[00:19:48] infinite degree

[00:19:49] higher than that,

[00:19:51] just trust me.

[00:19:52] Goodness, just trust me.

[00:19:54] I can't give you

[00:19:55] all the answers

[00:19:55] and if I did,

[00:19:56] you probably would go crazy

[00:19:57] and you wouldn't

[00:19:58] comprehend it anyway.

[00:20:00] We don't need

[00:20:01] all the answers.

[00:20:02] We talked last Tuesday night

[00:20:03] about Deuteronomy 29, 29

[00:20:05] and I always say

[00:20:06] it's such an easy

[00:20:06] verse to remember

[00:20:07] because of that 29, 29.

[00:20:09] But it says

[00:20:10] the secret things

[00:20:11] belong to the Lord.

[00:20:13] We're not going

[00:20:13] to know it all.

[00:20:14] We're never going

[00:20:15] to know everything

[00:20:15] about who, what,

[00:20:16] when, where, why

[00:20:17] about God's amazing plan

[00:20:20] until later

[00:20:20] if he decides

[00:20:21] to let us know

[00:20:22] and then he will.

[00:20:23] But he says

[00:20:24] I know you don't

[00:20:25] understand right now.

[00:20:26] That's not the point

[00:20:27] for you to understand

[00:20:28] all of it right now.

[00:20:29] He says, I know that.

[00:20:30] I just need you

[00:20:30] to trust me.

[00:20:33] So trust him.

[00:20:37] And so here we see

[00:20:38] a classic picture

[00:20:39] of Peter.

[00:20:40] Again, speaking

[00:20:41] before thinking.

[00:20:42] Does this remind us

[00:20:43] of ourselves?

[00:20:44] It does of me sometimes.

[00:20:47] Making a fuss

[00:20:48] when we really

[00:20:48] don't know what's

[00:20:49] going on

[00:20:49] and we think we do

[00:20:50] and later we find out

[00:20:51] boy, that was embarrassing.

[00:20:53] I put my foot

[00:20:54] in my mouth

[00:20:56] and Peter shows us

[00:20:58] how we are a lot.

[00:21:01] Verse 8.

[00:21:03] Peter said to him,

[00:21:03] here we go,

[00:21:04] you shall never

[00:21:05] wash my feet.

[00:21:08] Jesus is trying

[00:21:08] to do something

[00:21:09] to serve Peter.

[00:21:11] No, you won't do it,

[00:21:12] Jesus.

[00:21:12] Jesus answered him,

[00:21:13] if I do not wash you,

[00:21:14] you have no share

[00:21:15] with me.

[00:21:16] If I don't wash you,

[00:21:17] you have nothing

[00:21:18] to do with what I'm doing.

[00:21:19] You have no part

[00:21:19] of me and what

[00:21:20] my plan is.

[00:21:22] He made it clear

[00:21:22] to Peter.

[00:21:25] And it's nice to see

[00:21:26] that Peter

[00:21:26] is a quick learner.

[00:21:29] The next verse,

[00:21:29] verse 9,

[00:21:30] says,

[00:21:30] Simon Peter said to him,

[00:21:31] Lord, not my feet only,

[00:21:33] but also my hands

[00:21:34] and my head.

[00:21:35] Lord, if that's how

[00:21:36] it is,

[00:21:37] then wash all of me.

[00:21:40] Because at first,

[00:21:42] he doubts Jesus.

[00:21:44] The initial default

[00:21:45] position for Peter

[00:21:45] was doubt.

[00:21:46] Jesus, you don't know

[00:21:46] what you're doing.

[00:21:47] No, no, Jesus,

[00:21:48] that's wrong, Jesus.

[00:21:51] He thinks Jesus is mistaken

[00:21:52] or doing something

[00:21:54] inappropriate,

[00:21:56] but Peter shouldn't

[00:21:57] have done that.

[00:21:59] And he's learning here

[00:22:00] that we should learn too.

[00:22:02] So Jesus informs Peter,

[00:22:05] if I don't wash you,

[00:22:07] you have no part with me.

[00:22:09] He just makes it clear.

[00:22:11] You have no share with me.

[00:22:12] What is Jesus showing us?

[00:22:14] What did Jesus show Peter

[00:22:16] in that moment?

[00:22:19] And I'm glad that he was

[00:22:20] a quick learner

[00:22:21] and we should be too.

[00:22:22] Once he realized,

[00:22:23] okay, this is how it is,

[00:22:24] good, okay,

[00:22:25] now I get it,

[00:22:27] take all of me,

[00:22:28] wash all of me.

[00:22:30] Your next note says,

[00:22:31] we should be quick to repent

[00:22:33] when confronted with

[00:22:34] the word of the Lord.

[00:22:37] We have our own ideas

[00:22:38] about how things should be.

[00:22:40] Boy, if I ran this business,

[00:22:42] I would make these changes

[00:22:43] and that change

[00:22:44] and you know what?

[00:22:45] Maybe those changes

[00:22:46] will work

[00:22:47] or if I ran the show

[00:22:48] here or there.

[00:22:49] Maybe you're right,

[00:22:49] you probably would have

[00:22:50] some good ideas

[00:22:51] but there should be,

[00:22:53] there probably is,

[00:22:54] reasons for all those things

[00:22:55] being the way they are

[00:22:56] for now.

[00:22:57] If you don't like

[00:22:57] how the restaurant

[00:22:58] does this or does that,

[00:22:59] there's probably reasons

[00:23:00] for all those things

[00:23:01] that you don't understand.

[00:23:03] Just like in our faith walk

[00:23:05] or in a church

[00:23:08] or how the Lord deals with us,

[00:23:10] we might look at the Lord

[00:23:11] and say,

[00:23:11] you know Lord,

[00:23:11] I would have done that differently

[00:23:13] and let me tell you how

[00:23:14] and he would have really

[00:23:15] been impressed

[00:23:15] and then he would have said,

[00:23:16] can we get back

[00:23:16] to business now?

[00:23:19] If I wanted things

[00:23:20] done your way,

[00:23:21] I mean,

[00:23:21] then you'd be the boss.

[00:23:24] God does things his way

[00:23:25] and he wants us

[00:23:26] to trust him.

[00:23:31] Verse 10,

[00:23:32] Jesus said to him,

[00:23:34] the one who has bathed

[00:23:35] does not need to wash

[00:23:36] except for his feet

[00:23:39] but is completely clean

[00:23:41] and you are clean

[00:23:44] but not every one of you

[00:23:46] for he knew

[00:23:47] who was to betray him.

[00:23:48] That was why he said,

[00:23:49] not all of you are clean.

[00:23:51] Again,

[00:23:52] Jesus shows us

[00:23:53] this supernatural knowledge

[00:23:54] he has.

[00:23:54] He knew about Judas

[00:23:57] and he knew about Judas' heart.

[00:23:59] He didn't just know

[00:23:59] what Judas would do.

[00:24:01] He knew Judas' heart

[00:24:02] and he was the only one

[00:24:03] that could know

[00:24:04] a heart of a man.

[00:24:06] We're told in other places

[00:24:07] in scripture

[00:24:07] that he knows

[00:24:09] the hearts of men.

[00:24:11] Who else does that?

[00:24:12] Only God does.

[00:24:14] He says,

[00:24:15] not all of you are clean.

[00:24:17] And again,

[00:24:18] back to the high priestly prayer

[00:24:20] in John 17,

[00:24:21] Jesus makes a distinction.

[00:24:24] He says in verse 12

[00:24:25] of John 17,

[00:24:26] I have guarded them.

[00:24:26] He's talking about

[00:24:27] his disciples.

[00:24:27] I've guarded them

[00:24:29] and not one of them

[00:24:30] has been lost

[00:24:31] except the son

[00:24:32] of destruction

[00:24:33] that the scripture

[00:24:34] might be fulfilled.

[00:24:35] This is Judas.

[00:24:38] Jesus said,

[00:24:39] you are clean

[00:24:40] and this word for you,

[00:24:42] you know how in English

[00:24:42] we say you

[00:24:43] for plural

[00:24:44] and you for singular.

[00:24:46] This word is a plural you.

[00:24:47] It's like we would say

[00:24:48] y'all or you guys

[00:24:49] and all you guys

[00:24:51] are clean,

[00:24:52] he says,

[00:24:52] but not every one of you.

[00:24:57] So what did he mean

[00:24:58] by this

[00:24:59] about Judas?

[00:25:00] Not every one of you.

[00:25:00] He's speaking to Judas.

[00:25:02] Did he mean that Judas

[00:25:03] was still dirty?

[00:25:05] That his feet

[00:25:06] still had mud on him?

[00:25:09] Was Jesus talking about

[00:25:11] Judas' physical cleanliness here?

[00:25:15] Or was he speaking

[00:25:16] about something spiritual?

[00:25:21] He said,

[00:25:22] the one who has bathed

[00:25:23] does not need to wash

[00:25:25] except for his feet

[00:25:26] but is completely clean.

[00:25:29] Here he's giving us theology

[00:25:31] once again

[00:25:31] through this example

[00:25:32] that seems like a nice story.

[00:25:34] He's really giving us theology.

[00:25:37] Your note here

[00:25:38] says in scripture

[00:25:39] and I mentioned this

[00:25:40] at the beginning,

[00:25:41] remember to look

[00:25:41] for the spiritual truths

[00:25:43] and not merely

[00:25:44] at the physical acts.

[00:25:47] Don't just look

[00:25:48] at the physical actions

[00:25:48] in the story here.

[00:25:50] Look for the spiritual truths here

[00:25:52] and Jesus is giving them to us

[00:25:54] in particular

[00:25:56] by this past

[00:25:58] or this last verse

[00:25:59] where he says

[00:26:02] the one who has bathed

[00:26:04] does not need to wash

[00:26:06] except for his feet.

[00:26:08] Why would he say that?

[00:26:09] Well, these two words

[00:26:10] are different.

[00:26:11] What does it mean to bathe?

[00:26:13] It means to take a bath.

[00:26:14] It means your whole body's clean.

[00:26:15] Take a shower,

[00:26:16] take a bath.

[00:26:17] You're completely clean.

[00:26:18] You've cleaned

[00:26:18] every part of your body.

[00:26:19] You don't have to now

[00:26:20] go out of the shower

[00:26:21] and then go into the kitchen

[00:26:22] and wash your hands

[00:26:23] and freshen up

[00:26:24] because you just clean.

[00:26:25] Your whole body's clean.

[00:26:28] That word bathe

[00:26:29] in the Greek

[00:26:30] means just like that.

[00:26:31] You wash your entire body.

[00:26:33] But the word wash

[00:26:34] in the Greek

[00:26:35] really just means

[00:26:36] to kind of freshen up.

[00:26:37] Maybe wash your hands,

[00:26:38] rinse your hands

[00:26:38] before you eat.

[00:26:40] Maybe splash some water

[00:26:41] on your face.

[00:26:42] Just a little bit here,

[00:26:44] a part of your body

[00:26:44] that might have got

[00:26:45] something on it.

[00:26:46] That's what wash is.

[00:26:47] You don't have to freshen up

[00:26:48] after you just took a bath.

[00:26:49] You're totally clean.

[00:26:51] He says,

[00:26:51] except for your feet.

[00:26:55] What's Jesus showing us?

[00:26:58] We're putting

[00:26:59] the pieces together.

[00:27:01] We're connecting these dots.

[00:27:03] Verse 12,

[00:27:05] when he'd washed their feet

[00:27:06] and put on his outer garments

[00:27:08] and resumed his place,

[00:27:10] he said to them,

[00:27:10] do you understand

[00:27:11] what I've done to you?

[00:27:15] They were probably thinking,

[00:27:16] yeah, you just washed their feet.

[00:27:19] What else could there be?

[00:27:21] But I don't think

[00:27:22] he was asking that.

[00:27:23] And he knew he didn't,

[00:27:24] that they didn't know

[00:27:25] the answer

[00:27:25] to what he was asking

[00:27:27] because he knew.

[00:27:28] They thought

[00:27:28] he just washed their feet.

[00:27:29] Big deal.

[00:27:30] Only little servants do that.

[00:27:31] You know,

[00:27:32] people that are just so low

[00:27:33] on the totem pole.

[00:27:35] He was probably giving us

[00:27:36] an idea of humility.

[00:27:37] That's about as far

[00:27:38] as I could take it,

[00:27:39] they probably thought.

[00:27:41] He didn't wait

[00:27:41] for their answer.

[00:27:42] He says,

[00:27:42] do you understand

[00:27:43] what I've done to you?

[00:27:45] He knows they don't

[00:27:46] understand yet.

[00:27:49] But he wants them

[00:27:50] to think about it.

[00:27:51] And that's why

[00:27:52] he asked the question.

[00:27:53] Otherwise,

[00:27:54] he would have just

[00:27:54] washed their feet

[00:27:55] and then continued

[00:27:55] with dinner.

[00:27:57] And they might have

[00:27:57] had a comment or two

[00:27:58] and that would have

[00:27:58] been the end of it.

[00:28:00] But he pauses

[00:28:00] and he asks the question

[00:28:01] so they'll think about this.

[00:28:02] Do you know

[00:28:03] what I've done to you?

[00:28:03] Do you know

[00:28:04] what I just did there?

[00:28:06] Because if he didn't

[00:28:07] ask that question,

[00:28:08] they would have just

[00:28:08] breezed right past it.

[00:28:10] He made sure

[00:28:11] they thought about it.

[00:28:11] Think about what I just did.

[00:28:16] So now,

[00:28:16] you and I,

[00:28:17] let's think about this.

[00:28:20] First,

[00:28:20] from the physical perspective,

[00:28:22] those physical actions.

[00:28:24] We went through it before.

[00:28:25] Jesus,

[00:28:25] okay,

[00:28:25] what did he do?

[00:28:26] He got up

[00:28:26] from his place

[00:28:27] of comfort

[00:28:28] and rest

[00:28:29] after supper.

[00:28:31] He took off

[00:28:32] his outer garment.

[00:28:34] He put on

[00:28:35] a towel,

[00:28:37] washed the filth

[00:28:38] off the disciples' feet

[00:28:40] with the towel,

[00:28:42] put back on

[00:28:42] the outer garments,

[00:28:44] resumed his place

[00:28:45] of rest.

[00:28:48] That's the physical actions.

[00:28:49] Just dry bones

[00:28:51] like that.

[00:28:51] Now let's look at it

[00:28:52] from the spiritual

[00:28:53] perspective.

[00:28:56] He says,

[00:28:57] do you know

[00:28:57] what I did for you?

[00:28:58] Do you know

[00:28:58] what I did to you?

[00:28:59] Okay,

[00:29:00] well Jesus got up

[00:29:01] from his comfortable

[00:29:01] place

[00:29:04] at the right hand

[00:29:05] of the Father.

[00:29:07] He took off

[00:29:08] his outer garment,

[00:29:11] his heavenly glory.

[00:29:14] He put on

[00:29:15] another garment,

[00:29:16] humanity,

[00:29:16] flesh.

[00:29:20] Philippians 2 says,

[00:29:22] though he was

[00:29:23] in the form of God,

[00:29:23] did not count

[00:29:24] equality with God

[00:29:25] a thing to be grasped,

[00:29:26] but he emptied himself

[00:29:27] by taking the form

[00:29:29] of a servant,

[00:29:30] being born

[00:29:30] in the likeness

[00:29:31] of men.

[00:29:32] He put on

[00:29:33] flesh.

[00:29:34] He put on

[00:29:34] that towel around him.

[00:29:35] He secured it

[00:29:36] to himself.

[00:29:37] What did he do

[00:29:38] by that flesh,

[00:29:39] by that towel?

[00:29:40] He washed the filth

[00:29:41] of those who follow him,

[00:29:42] his disciples,

[00:29:44] his believers.

[00:29:47] He washed their sins

[00:29:48] away with that towel

[00:29:49] of perfect flesh.

[00:29:54] He then put on again

[00:29:55] his outer garment,

[00:29:56] his glory,

[00:29:58] and he resumed

[00:29:58] his place

[00:29:59] at the right hand

[00:30:00] of the Father

[00:30:01] when he ascended

[00:30:01] to heaven.

[00:30:03] And Jesus ends

[00:30:04] verse 12

[00:30:05] by asking,

[00:30:06] do you understand

[00:30:06] what I've done

[00:30:07] to you?

[00:30:09] And I ask you now,

[00:30:11] do you understand

[00:30:13] why Jesus

[00:30:15] washed the disciples'

[00:30:16] feet?

[00:30:17] And then ask him,

[00:30:19] ask them,

[00:30:19] do you understand?

[00:30:20] They didn't understand.

[00:30:23] Not yet.

[00:30:25] But later,

[00:30:26] they did.

[00:30:28] And later,

[00:30:29] you and I

[00:30:29] will understand

[00:30:30] why.

[00:30:32] Why are we going

[00:30:33] through all this

[00:30:34] stuff?

[00:30:35] He says,

[00:30:36] I know you don't

[00:30:36] understand right now,

[00:30:38] but you will.

[00:30:40] You'll understand.

[00:30:44] You see,

[00:30:44] this is the gospel.

[00:30:47] Jesus' washing

[00:30:48] of the disciples'

[00:30:49] feet is a picture

[00:30:50] of the gospel

[00:30:52] through an act

[00:30:53] of service.

[00:30:56] This is what

[00:30:57] Jesus is showing us.

[00:30:58] When we're washed

[00:30:59] by Jesus,

[00:31:00] when we're washed

[00:31:01] by the blood

[00:31:01] of the Lamb,

[00:31:02] when we're washed

[00:31:04] only by Him,

[00:31:05] we are completely

[00:31:06] clean.

[00:31:09] We're completely

[00:31:10] clean,

[00:31:10] and this is

[00:31:10] that washing

[00:31:11] of the Word

[00:31:13] that washes over us.

[00:31:14] This is salvation.

[00:31:16] This is salvation

[00:31:17] clean.

[00:31:20] Your next note

[00:31:21] says,

[00:31:21] we are made

[00:31:21] completely clean

[00:31:22] only by the

[00:31:24] washing of

[00:31:25] Jesus'

[00:31:25] sacrifice.

[00:31:27] That's the only

[00:31:27] thing that can

[00:31:28] wash us

[00:31:28] completely clean,

[00:31:31] and it's only

[00:31:32] by Him.

[00:31:33] He's the only

[00:31:34] way.

[00:31:35] Remember,

[00:31:35] He told Peter,

[00:31:36] if I don't

[00:31:36] wash you,

[00:31:37] you have no

[00:31:37] part of me,

[00:31:39] and I'm the

[00:31:39] only way.

[00:31:41] You need

[00:31:41] me to wash

[00:31:42] you.

[00:31:45] We're not

[00:31:46] clean unless

[00:31:47] we're washed

[00:31:47] by the blood

[00:31:48] of Christ,

[00:31:49] and we're not

[00:31:49] clean unless

[00:31:50] we're covered

[00:31:51] by His

[00:31:51] righteousness,

[00:31:52] and we're not

[00:31:52] clean until

[00:31:53] we're covered

[00:31:53] by His

[00:31:54] righteousness,

[00:31:54] and once

[00:31:55] we are covered

[00:31:55] by His

[00:31:56] righteousness,

[00:31:57] we're completely

[00:31:58] clean.

[00:32:00] But in verse 10,

[00:32:01] remember,

[00:32:02] He says,

[00:32:03] the one who

[00:32:03] is bathed does

[00:32:04] not need to

[00:32:04] wash except

[00:32:06] for his feet.

[00:32:08] Oh, I thought

[00:32:08] we were completely

[00:32:09] clean.

[00:32:10] Why the feet?

[00:32:11] Why do we

[00:32:11] have to wash

[00:32:12] our feet all

[00:32:12] the time?

[00:32:12] Can't He just

[00:32:13] make us

[00:32:13] clean perfectly,

[00:32:14] and we never

[00:32:15] have to wash

[00:32:15] our feet?

[00:32:17] Jesus said,

[00:32:18] no, you still

[00:32:19] have to wash

[00:32:20] your feet.

[00:32:21] What does that

[00:32:21] mean?

[00:32:22] Well, you can

[00:32:23] think about this.

[00:32:24] As we walk

[00:32:25] around this

[00:32:25] fallen,

[00:32:25] sinful world,

[00:32:26] we get the

[00:32:28] world's residue

[00:32:29] on us.

[00:32:29] The sin is

[00:32:30] around us.

[00:32:30] It's even

[00:32:31] within us,

[00:32:31] and we still

[00:32:33] get that gunk

[00:32:34] on us.

[00:32:34] Even though

[00:32:35] we're clean,

[00:32:35] we're saved,

[00:32:38] we still need

[00:32:39] to not

[00:32:39] bathe again,

[00:32:40] we just need

[00:32:41] to wash,

[00:32:42] freshen up.

[00:32:43] Well, what does

[00:32:43] that mean?

[00:32:47] We need to

[00:32:48] constantly be

[00:32:48] coming back

[00:32:49] to Jesus,

[00:32:50] for Him to

[00:32:51] continually

[00:32:51] sanctify us,

[00:32:53] refocus our

[00:32:54] attention on

[00:32:55] Him again.

[00:32:56] We meet

[00:32:57] every week

[00:32:58] on the Lord's

[00:32:59] Day like

[00:33:00] they've done

[00:33:00] since Christ

[00:33:01] was raised

[00:33:02] from the dead.

[00:33:04] to wash

[00:33:04] that stuff

[00:33:05] off.

[00:33:06] We're

[00:33:07] completely

[00:33:07] clean,

[00:33:08] but we do

[00:33:09] have to

[00:33:09] wash.

[00:33:10] Not bathe.

[00:33:11] Jesus makes

[00:33:12] that distinction

[00:33:13] here.

[00:33:13] He says,

[00:33:14] you don't have

[00:33:14] to wash,

[00:33:14] you don't have

[00:33:15] to clean

[00:33:15] again,

[00:33:15] you're

[00:33:15] completely

[00:33:15] clean,

[00:33:16] but you

[00:33:16] just got

[00:33:17] to wash

[00:33:17] your feet.

[00:33:17] Not bathe,

[00:33:19] wipe your

[00:33:19] feet off.

[00:33:20] Why?

[00:33:20] That's the

[00:33:21] sin that

[00:33:21] kind of gets

[00:33:21] on us.

[00:33:23] And the

[00:33:23] longer you

[00:33:24] go without

[00:33:25] washing that

[00:33:26] stuff off.

[00:33:26] It's

[00:33:27] going to

[00:33:27] get,

[00:33:28] it doesn't

[00:33:28] get cleaner

[00:33:29] by itself.

[00:33:30] You've

[00:33:30] got to

[00:33:30] go back

[00:33:30] to Christ

[00:33:31] to have

[00:33:32] Him wash

[00:33:32] you over

[00:33:33] and over

[00:33:34] again and

[00:33:34] again continually

[00:33:36] because He's

[00:33:37] our Savior

[00:33:39] and we need

[00:33:39] Him.

[00:33:40] We don't

[00:33:40] just get

[00:33:41] clean and

[00:33:41] then we're

[00:33:41] clean forever.

[00:33:45] Don't

[00:33:46] misunderstand.

[00:33:48] When you are

[00:33:48] saved, you are

[00:33:49] saved forever.

[00:33:49] I believe the

[00:33:50] Bible teaches

[00:33:51] that because

[00:33:51] what Christ

[00:33:52] does cannot

[00:33:53] be undone,

[00:33:55] but we

[00:33:55] still need

[00:33:56] Him to

[00:33:57] be sanctified,

[00:33:58] to be holy,

[00:33:58] to be righteous

[00:34:00] and it comes

[00:34:00] only through

[00:34:01] Him.

[00:34:05] We need to

[00:34:06] continuously

[00:34:07] be dependent

[00:34:08] on Him.

[00:34:10] You can think

[00:34:10] of it this

[00:34:11] way.

[00:34:11] Once you're

[00:34:11] bathed,

[00:34:12] that's salvation.

[00:34:14] That's a

[00:34:14] one-time

[00:34:15] transaction.

[00:34:17] But after

[00:34:17] that, your

[00:34:18] life starts

[00:34:18] to change

[00:34:19] and hopefully

[00:34:20] you'll become

[00:34:20] more and more

[00:34:21] like Christ

[00:34:21] and that's

[00:34:21] called

[00:34:22] sanctification.

[00:34:23] You become

[00:34:24] more holy,

[00:34:25] more like

[00:34:25] Jesus and

[00:34:26] that's

[00:34:26] that

[00:34:27] washing.

[00:34:28] Daily,

[00:34:28] weekly,

[00:34:29] that's why

[00:34:30] we're told

[00:34:30] that He's

[00:34:31] our daily

[00:34:31] bread.

[00:34:32] We need

[00:34:33] Him all

[00:34:33] the time.

[00:34:34] He's our

[00:34:34] manna from

[00:34:35] heaven.

[00:34:36] How often

[00:34:37] did the

[00:34:37] Israelites

[00:34:37] get manna

[00:34:38] from heaven

[00:34:38] every day?

[00:34:41] And He

[00:34:42] is our

[00:34:42] bread of

[00:34:43] life from

[00:34:43] heaven.

[00:34:46] This is

[00:34:47] the spiritual

[00:34:47] washing of

[00:34:48] our spiritual

[00:34:49] feet,

[00:34:50] you could say.

[00:34:51] Jesus uses

[00:34:51] this as a

[00:34:52] metaphor and

[00:34:55] He gives us

[00:34:55] more instruction

[00:34:56] beginning in

[00:34:56] verse 13.

[00:34:57] He says,

[00:34:57] You call

[00:34:58] me teacher

[00:34:58] and Lord

[00:34:58] and you

[00:34:59] are right

[00:35:00] for so I

[00:35:01] am.

[00:35:02] If then

[00:35:03] your Lord

[00:35:03] and teacher

[00:35:03] have washed

[00:35:04] your feet,

[00:35:05] you also

[00:35:07] ought to

[00:35:07] wash one

[00:35:08] another's

[00:35:08] feet.

[00:35:09] For I

[00:35:09] have given

[00:35:10] you an

[00:35:10] example that

[00:35:11] you also

[00:35:12] should do

[00:35:12] just as I

[00:35:12] have done

[00:35:13] to you.

[00:35:14] Truly,

[00:35:14] truly,

[00:35:14] I say to

[00:35:15] you,

[00:35:15] a servant

[00:35:15] is not

[00:35:16] greater than

[00:35:16] his master,

[00:35:17] nor is a

[00:35:18] messenger

[00:35:18] greater than

[00:35:19] the one who

[00:35:19] sent him.

[00:35:20] If you know

[00:35:21] these things,

[00:35:22] blessed are

[00:35:22] you if you

[00:35:23] do them.

[00:35:27] When He

[00:35:27] said a

[00:35:28] servant

[00:35:29] is not

[00:35:29] greater than

[00:35:29] his master,

[00:35:30] He's taking

[00:35:31] an excuse

[00:35:31] away,

[00:35:32] I think.

[00:35:33] What does

[00:35:33] that mean?

[00:35:34] Well,

[00:35:34] if you're

[00:35:35] one of the

[00:35:36] disciples and

[00:35:37] you see Jesus

[00:35:38] getting down

[00:35:39] and washing

[00:35:39] someone's feet,

[00:35:40] which is usually

[00:35:41] only what the

[00:35:42] lowest servant

[00:35:42] does,

[00:35:43] now you

[00:35:43] can't say

[00:35:44] because He

[00:35:44] said a

[00:35:45] servant's not

[00:35:45] greater than

[00:35:45] his master.

[00:35:46] He's saying

[00:35:46] you guys are

[00:35:47] no better

[00:35:47] than me and

[00:35:48] I'm down

[00:35:48] here on my

[00:35:49] hands and

[00:35:49] knees washing

[00:35:50] feet.

[00:35:50] So don't

[00:35:51] you ever,

[00:35:51] I don't want

[00:35:52] to hear you

[00:35:52] guys say,

[00:35:53] oh that's

[00:35:53] beneath me.

[00:35:56] He said I'm

[00:35:57] down here doing

[00:35:57] it too and

[00:35:58] you're no

[00:35:58] better than me.

[00:35:59] So if you

[00:35:59] think you

[00:36:00] can't do it,

[00:36:00] think again.

[00:36:02] You better be

[00:36:03] right down

[00:36:03] here with

[00:36:03] me.

[00:36:04] Servant's not

[00:36:05] greater than

[00:36:05] his master.

[00:36:06] He said Peter,

[00:36:07] you're no

[00:36:08] better than

[00:36:08] me and I'm

[00:36:09] down here

[00:36:09] doing it so

[00:36:10] I expect

[00:36:10] you to do

[00:36:11] that too.

[00:36:12] He gave us

[00:36:13] an example.

[00:36:16] The second

[00:36:16] part of what

[00:36:17] this picture

[00:36:19] is,

[00:36:20] it's certainly

[00:36:21] a picture of

[00:36:21] what Jesus

[00:36:22] has done for

[00:36:22] us in

[00:36:23] salvation,

[00:36:23] the gospel

[00:36:23] message,

[00:36:25] but it's also

[00:36:26] now about

[00:36:26] how we live.

[00:36:29] He's exemplified

[00:36:30] something for

[00:36:30] us that we

[00:36:30] should be

[00:36:31] doing to

[00:36:31] each other.

[00:36:32] So does

[00:36:33] Jesus expect

[00:36:34] for us to

[00:36:34] be literally

[00:36:35] washing each

[00:36:35] other's feet?

[00:36:37] I don't think

[00:36:37] so.

[00:36:38] I think that's

[00:36:39] the example

[00:36:40] he gives with

[00:36:41] a deeper

[00:36:42] meaning behind

[00:36:42] it.

[00:36:44] The washing

[00:36:45] of the feet

[00:36:45] that we should

[00:36:46] all be doing

[00:36:46] with each

[00:36:46] other is

[00:36:47] helping each

[00:36:48] other to

[00:36:48] stay holy,

[00:36:50] to keep each

[00:36:51] other accountable.

[00:36:53] You know

[00:36:53] how maybe you

[00:36:55] don't see a

[00:36:55] friend from

[00:36:56] church for a

[00:36:56] while and

[00:36:57] maybe they're

[00:36:57] having a tough

[00:36:58] time and

[00:36:58] they're getting

[00:36:58] into some

[00:36:59] sinful things?

[00:37:00] Well,

[00:37:01] Jesus expects

[00:37:02] us to go

[00:37:02] get them

[00:37:03] and bring

[00:37:03] them back

[00:37:04] in and

[00:37:04] lovingly

[00:37:05] bring them

[00:37:05] back to

[00:37:06] the fold.

[00:37:08] This is

[00:37:08] about Christian

[00:37:09] discipline in

[00:37:11] the church.

[00:37:12] And discipline

[00:37:13] is a good

[00:37:13] thing.

[00:37:13] Remember

[00:37:14] last week

[00:37:14] we talked

[00:37:14] about the

[00:37:15] difference

[00:37:15] between

[00:37:15] punishment

[00:37:16] and discipline.

[00:37:17] We're not

[00:37:18] punishing

[00:37:18] people,

[00:37:18] we're disciplining

[00:37:20] the ones we

[00:37:21] love.

[00:37:22] And that

[00:37:22] goes both

[00:37:23] ways.

[00:37:24] We should

[00:37:25] all be

[00:37:25] holding

[00:37:26] each other

[00:37:26] accountable

[00:37:26] is another

[00:37:27] way to

[00:37:27] say it.

[00:37:28] It doesn't

[00:37:28] have such

[00:37:28] a bad

[00:37:29] connotation.

[00:37:30] No one likes

[00:37:30] the word

[00:37:31] discipline.

[00:37:32] We hold

[00:37:33] each other

[00:37:33] accountable.

[00:37:34] And that's

[00:37:34] a loving

[00:37:35] thing to do

[00:37:35] and that's

[00:37:35] what Jesus

[00:37:36] wants us

[00:37:36] to do

[00:37:36] here.

[00:37:37] I want

[00:37:37] you to

[00:37:38] all wash

[00:37:38] each other's

[00:37:39] feet,

[00:37:39] quote unquote.

[00:37:40] Keep each

[00:37:40] other clean.

[00:37:41] Keep each

[00:37:41] other holy

[00:37:42] and righteous.

[00:37:44] Jesus,

[00:37:44] we should

[00:37:45] all want

[00:37:45] our friends

[00:37:46] to do

[00:37:46] that with

[00:37:46] us in

[00:37:47] the flock.

[00:37:48] We should

[00:37:49] appreciate

[00:37:49] that.

[00:37:50] He says,

[00:37:51] if you know

[00:37:51] these things,

[00:37:52] you're blessed

[00:37:53] if you do

[00:37:54] them.

[00:37:55] You can't

[00:37:56] just know

[00:37:56] it.

[00:37:56] I know

[00:37:56] that's what

[00:37:57] I should

[00:37:57] be doing.

[00:37:58] Well,

[00:37:58] do you

[00:37:58] do it?

[00:37:59] No,

[00:37:59] I just

[00:37:59] know it.

[00:38:01] He says,

[00:38:01] if you

[00:38:02] know it,

[00:38:02] then you're

[00:38:03] blessed if

[00:38:03] you do

[00:38:04] it.

[00:38:05] So if

[00:38:05] you know

[00:38:06] it,

[00:38:06] you should

[00:38:06] do it.

[00:38:07] Even in

[00:38:08] James,

[00:38:09] it's one

[00:38:09] thing to

[00:38:09] know the

[00:38:10] word,

[00:38:10] but do

[00:38:11] it too.

[00:38:14] Your next

[00:38:15] note says,

[00:38:15] we are

[00:38:15] called to

[00:38:16] strengthen one

[00:38:17] another toward

[00:38:18] increasing

[00:38:18] holiness as

[00:38:20] we walk

[00:38:20] through this

[00:38:20] world.

[00:38:22] We're called

[00:38:23] to do it.

[00:38:23] Jesus just

[00:38:24] told us,

[00:38:24] I want you

[00:38:24] to do

[00:38:24] this.

[00:38:26] This is a

[00:38:27] good thing.

[00:38:28] 1 Corinthians

[00:38:29] 5 talks

[00:38:30] about how

[00:38:30] we're supposed

[00:38:31] to hold

[00:38:31] each other

[00:38:32] accountable

[00:38:32] within the

[00:38:32] church.

[00:38:33] Not the

[00:38:34] world.

[00:38:34] We're

[00:38:34] supposed to

[00:38:35] love the

[00:38:35] world.

[00:38:36] But if

[00:38:37] you call

[00:38:37] yourself

[00:38:37] Christian,

[00:38:38] now you

[00:38:38] give each

[00:38:39] other the

[00:38:39] right to

[00:38:39] keep you

[00:38:40] accountable

[00:38:40] to the

[00:38:41] Lord,

[00:38:44] to the

[00:38:44] church.

[00:38:46] Verse

[00:38:47] 18,

[00:38:47] he says,

[00:38:48] I am not

[00:38:48] speaking to

[00:38:49] all of

[00:38:49] you.

[00:38:52] And wouldn't

[00:38:53] you wonder,

[00:38:53] and I wonder

[00:38:53] if Judas

[00:38:54] knew,

[00:38:56] is he

[00:38:56] talking about

[00:38:56] me?

[00:38:58] The other

[00:38:58] disciples thought,

[00:39:00] maybe he's

[00:39:00] talking about

[00:39:00] me.

[00:39:01] Remember they

[00:39:01] talked about

[00:39:01] it at the

[00:39:02] last supper.

[00:39:03] Who do you

[00:39:03] think it is?

[00:39:04] Is it you?

[00:39:04] Is it him?

[00:39:04] Is it me?

[00:39:06] He says,

[00:39:06] I'm not

[00:39:07] speaking to

[00:39:07] all of

[00:39:07] you.

[00:39:07] I know

[00:39:08] whom I've

[00:39:09] chosen.

[00:39:11] But the

[00:39:11] scripture will

[00:39:12] be fulfilled.

[00:39:13] This is back

[00:39:13] from Psalms.

[00:39:14] He who ate

[00:39:15] my bread

[00:39:16] has lifted

[00:39:16] his heel

[00:39:16] against me.

[00:39:19] Jesus draws

[00:39:20] lines.

[00:39:21] He knows

[00:39:22] who his

[00:39:22] people are.

[00:39:23] He knows,

[00:39:24] as he says,

[00:39:25] whom I have

[00:39:26] chosen.

[00:39:27] That's why we

[00:39:28] have church

[00:39:28] membership.

[00:39:29] That's why

[00:39:30] church membership

[00:39:30] is important.

[00:39:31] It's important

[00:39:31] to you so

[00:39:33] you all know

[00:39:33] who you are

[00:39:35] called to

[00:39:35] keep accountable.

[00:39:36] accountable.

[00:39:37] And it's

[00:39:38] important to

[00:39:38] any pastor

[00:39:39] or elder

[00:39:39] so they

[00:39:40] know who's

[00:39:41] agreed to

[00:39:42] be kept

[00:39:43] accountable by

[00:39:43] the church.

[00:39:44] Because if you

[00:39:45] haven't made

[00:39:45] the step for

[00:39:46] church leadership,

[00:39:47] you don't need

[00:39:48] to be a

[00:39:49] member of

[00:39:49] any church

[00:39:49] to be saved

[00:39:50] or go to

[00:39:51] heaven.

[00:39:52] It just

[00:39:52] helps the

[00:39:53] flock of

[00:39:54] the church

[00:39:54] understand

[00:39:54] who's

[00:39:55] really with

[00:39:57] us and

[00:39:58] said,

[00:39:58] you can

[00:39:58] keep me

[00:39:59] accountable.

[00:40:00] And who

[00:40:06] come to a

[00:40:06] brother and

[00:40:06] say,

[00:40:08] you called

[00:40:08] yourself a

[00:40:09] Christian.

[00:40:09] You said

[00:40:09] you're a

[00:40:10] part of

[00:40:10] our flock

[00:40:10] and I

[00:40:11] see this

[00:40:12] happening in

[00:40:12] your life.

[00:40:14] Now you've

[00:40:14] given me the

[00:40:15] right to say,

[00:40:16] hey, I need

[00:40:17] to call you

[00:40:17] out on this

[00:40:18] or vice

[00:40:19] versa.

[00:40:19] If someone

[00:40:19] comes to

[00:40:20] you and

[00:40:20] says,

[00:40:20] you said

[00:40:21] you're a

[00:40:21] member and

[00:40:23] I think we

[00:40:23] need to talk

[00:40:24] about a few

[00:40:24] things,

[00:40:25] then I

[00:40:25] should say,

[00:40:26] you're right,

[00:40:27] I have and

[00:40:28] I did and

[00:40:29] let's talk

[00:40:30] in love because

[00:40:30] I know we're

[00:40:31] called to do

[00:40:31] it.

[00:40:32] Now if you

[00:40:33] haven't made

[00:40:33] that commitment,

[00:40:34] that's fine.

[00:40:35] The relationship

[00:40:36] with the

[00:40:37] church is a

[00:40:38] little different

[00:40:38] then.

[00:40:39] We're not

[00:40:39] called to

[00:40:40] hold the

[00:40:40] world accountable

[00:40:42] because they

[00:40:43] haven't made

[00:40:43] that confession

[00:40:43] to Christ or

[00:40:44] profession of

[00:40:45] Christ.

[00:40:46] We're just

[00:40:46] supposed to

[00:40:47] love them,

[00:40:48] show them

[00:40:48] love,

[00:40:49] preach them

[00:40:49] the gospel,

[00:40:50] draw them

[00:40:51] in,

[00:40:52] but until

[00:40:52] they say

[00:40:53] I'm with

[00:40:53] you,

[00:40:54] you love

[00:40:55] them,

[00:40:55] you love

[00:40:55] them,

[00:40:56] you love

[00:40:56] them.

[00:41:00] Jesus

[00:41:00] draws lines

[00:41:01] and he

[00:41:01] says again,

[00:41:04] that high

[00:41:05] priestly prayer

[00:41:05] of John

[00:41:05] 17,

[00:41:07] he says I'm

[00:41:08] not,

[00:41:08] in John

[00:41:09] 13 he

[00:41:09] says I'm

[00:41:09] not speaking

[00:41:10] to all

[00:41:10] of you,

[00:41:10] I know

[00:41:11] whom I've

[00:41:11] chosen and

[00:41:12] he meant

[00:41:12] not Judas.

[00:41:16] He also

[00:41:16] draws a line

[00:41:17] in that high

[00:41:18] priestly prayer

[00:41:19] in verse 9

[00:41:20] of John

[00:41:20] 17 where

[00:41:21] he says I

[00:41:22] am praying

[00:41:22] for them,

[00:41:22] again the

[00:41:23] disciples,

[00:41:23] I'm not

[00:41:24] praying for

[00:41:24] the world

[00:41:25] he says,

[00:41:26] but for

[00:41:26] those whom

[00:41:27] you've given

[00:41:27] me for

[00:41:28] they're yours.

[00:41:28] He's talking

[00:41:29] to the Father.

[00:41:30] I'm praying

[00:41:30] for the ones

[00:41:31] you've given

[00:41:31] me.

[00:41:32] I'm not

[00:41:32] praying for

[00:41:32] the world

[00:41:33] right now,

[00:41:33] for the

[00:41:36] people.

[00:41:37] Jesus makes

[00:41:38] distinctions.

[00:41:39] It's okay

[00:41:40] to make

[00:41:40] distinctions.

[00:41:42] It helps

[00:41:43] us understand

[00:41:43] how we

[00:41:44] are to

[00:41:45] treat this

[00:41:46] relationship

[00:41:46] between this

[00:41:46] person,

[00:41:47] that person.

[00:41:49] We all

[00:41:49] might know

[00:41:50] people that

[00:41:50] are living

[00:41:51] in grievous

[00:41:52] sin and

[00:41:54] we can try

[00:41:55] to be the

[00:41:55] light of God

[00:41:56] to them but

[00:41:57] they're not

[00:41:57] going to hear

[00:41:58] the words of

[00:41:58] Jesus the

[00:41:59] way a

[00:41:59] Christian

[00:41:59] does because

[00:42:00] maybe they

[00:42:00] don't believe

[00:42:00] it,

[00:42:01] maybe they're

[00:42:01] mad at

[00:42:01] God,

[00:42:03] but they

[00:42:04] understand the

[00:42:04] language of

[00:42:05] love and

[00:42:08] unforgiveness and

[00:42:09] that might be

[00:42:10] enough to bring

[00:42:11] them closer to

[00:42:11] Jesus.

[00:42:13] Lines help us

[00:42:14] determine how

[00:42:15] we interact with

[00:42:16] people.

[00:42:20] In this passage

[00:42:21] Jesus quotes from

[00:42:22] Psalm 41,

[00:42:23] he says,

[00:42:23] He who ate my

[00:42:24] bread has lifted

[00:42:24] his heel against

[00:42:25] me.

[00:42:25] This one's so

[00:42:26] close he's dipping

[00:42:27] the bread with

[00:42:28] me.

[00:42:29] He's going to

[00:42:30] betray me.

[00:42:31] David wrote

[00:42:32] those words.

[00:42:33] Now being

[00:42:34] fulfilled by

[00:42:34] Christ.

[00:42:38] And in

[00:42:38] verse 19,

[00:42:40] Jesus goes on

[00:42:41] and he says,

[00:42:41] And I'm telling

[00:42:41] you this now

[00:42:43] before it

[00:42:43] takes place,

[00:42:44] that when it

[00:42:45] does take

[00:42:45] place,

[00:42:46] you may

[00:42:46] believe that

[00:42:46] I am he.

[00:42:47] He's still

[00:42:47] giving his

[00:42:48] disciples evidence

[00:42:49] until the

[00:42:49] very end of

[00:42:51] who he really

[00:42:52] is.

[00:42:52] Verse 20,

[00:42:53] Truly,

[00:42:53] truly I say

[00:42:54] to you,

[00:42:55] whoever receives

[00:42:56] the one I

[00:42:56] sent,

[00:42:56] receives me.

[00:42:58] And whoever

[00:42:59] receives me,

[00:43:00] receives the

[00:43:01] one who sent

[00:43:01] me.

[00:43:04] Jesus giving

[00:43:05] the disciples

[00:43:06] more evidence

[00:43:06] right to the

[00:43:07] end.

[00:43:07] He's telling

[00:43:08] his disciples,

[00:43:08] Now don't

[00:43:08] be surprised

[00:43:09] when someone

[00:43:10] from this

[00:43:10] room betrays

[00:43:11] me.

[00:43:11] I've already

[00:43:11] told you

[00:43:12] it's going

[00:43:12] to happen.

[00:43:13] Don't let

[00:43:14] it hinder

[00:43:15] your faith.

[00:43:16] Let your

[00:43:16] faith be

[00:43:17] strengthened

[00:43:17] by it because

[00:43:18] I'm telling

[00:43:18] you it's

[00:43:18] going to

[00:43:18] happen.

[00:43:19] So when

[00:43:19] it does

[00:43:19] happen,

[00:43:20] say,

[00:43:20] Oh,

[00:43:21] God knew

[00:43:21] this would

[00:43:21] happen.

[00:43:22] He told

[00:43:22] us it would

[00:43:23] happen.

[00:43:23] I'm not

[00:43:24] now crushed.

[00:43:25] My faith

[00:43:25] isn't crushed.

[00:43:26] It's actually

[00:43:26] emboldened

[00:43:27] because he

[00:43:27] said it was

[00:43:28] coming and

[00:43:28] I trust

[00:43:29] him.

[00:43:31] We can

[00:43:31] do that

[00:43:32] with events

[00:43:33] that we

[00:43:33] call bad

[00:43:34] in our

[00:43:34] lives.

[00:43:35] A bad

[00:43:35] event

[00:43:35] happened.

[00:43:36] God might

[00:43:37] be using

[00:43:37] that event

[00:43:38] for something

[00:43:38] great to

[00:43:39] happen later

[00:43:39] for his

[00:43:40] glory.

[00:43:41] So be

[00:43:42] careful because

[00:43:44] the disciples,

[00:43:44] if Christ

[00:43:45] had not

[00:43:45] told him

[00:43:45] this,

[00:43:46] where would

[00:43:46] they have

[00:43:47] been?

[00:43:49] He says,

[00:43:50] Now listen,

[00:43:50] someone's

[00:43:51] going to

[00:43:51] betray me.

[00:43:53] If he

[00:43:53] didn't say

[00:43:54] that and

[00:43:54] warn that

[00:43:54] and he

[00:43:55] just let

[00:43:55] Judas betray

[00:43:56] him,

[00:43:56] the disciples

[00:43:57] probably would

[00:43:57] have lost

[00:43:59] their minds

[00:44:00] even worse

[00:44:01] because they

[00:44:02] would be so

[00:44:02] confused.

[00:44:03] He helped

[00:44:03] them and

[00:44:04] said,

[00:44:04] someone's

[00:44:05] going to

[00:44:05] betray me.

[00:44:06] They

[00:44:06] might have

[00:44:06] said,

[00:44:07] Oh,

[00:44:07] that's

[00:44:07] bad news,

[00:44:08] Lord.

[00:44:08] That's a

[00:44:08] bad report.

[00:44:09] May it

[00:44:09] never be.

[00:44:11] But he

[00:44:12] knew it

[00:44:12] was for

[00:44:12] the best.

[00:44:14] So sometimes

[00:44:15] when we

[00:44:15] get quote

[00:44:16] unquote

[00:44:16] bad news,

[00:44:18] maybe just

[00:44:19] call it

[00:44:19] news because

[00:44:21] God's doing

[00:44:22] something with

[00:44:22] that and

[00:44:24] we just don't

[00:44:24] understand yet,

[00:44:25] but we

[00:44:26] will.

[00:44:28] In this

[00:44:29] case,

[00:44:29] he tells

[00:44:30] the disciples

[00:44:31] what's going

[00:44:31] to happen,

[00:44:32] a quote

[00:44:33] unquote

[00:44:33] bad thing.

[00:44:34] But unless

[00:44:34] someone betrayed

[00:44:35] Christ,

[00:44:37] would he

[00:44:38] have been

[00:44:38] sacrificed,

[00:44:39] an innocent

[00:44:40] man for

[00:44:41] our sin?

[00:44:43] It had to

[00:44:44] happen.

[00:44:48] So here he's

[00:44:49] telling his

[00:44:49] disciples this

[00:44:50] is going to

[00:44:50] happen and

[00:44:51] he's letting

[00:44:51] them know

[00:44:53] if they receive

[00:44:54] you,

[00:44:54] they're going

[00:44:54] to receive

[00:44:55] me.

[00:44:55] And if

[00:44:55] they receive

[00:44:55] me,

[00:44:56] they receive

[00:44:56] the Father

[00:44:56] too.

[00:44:57] Remember

[00:44:57] we're told

[00:44:58] he that

[00:44:59] doesn't accept

[00:45:00] the Son has

[00:45:00] not even

[00:45:01] the Father.

[00:45:04] Jesus is

[00:45:04] telling his

[00:45:05] disciples,

[00:45:06] you're going

[00:45:06] to now,

[00:45:07] when I

[00:45:07] leave,

[00:45:08] give others

[00:45:09] the access

[00:45:10] to God.

[00:45:12] You preach

[00:45:13] my gospel,

[00:45:13] they'll

[00:45:14] believe you,

[00:45:15] they'll

[00:45:16] believe my

[00:45:16] gospel,

[00:45:17] which means

[00:45:17] they'll

[00:45:17] believe in

[00:45:17] me,

[00:45:19] and they

[00:45:19] have the

[00:45:20] Father as

[00:45:20] well.

[00:45:21] This is

[00:45:21] going now

[00:45:22] through you.

[00:45:22] This is

[00:45:22] his last

[00:45:22] week of

[00:45:23] his life

[00:45:23] and he's

[00:45:23] kind of

[00:45:24] shifting,

[00:45:24] passing the

[00:45:25] baton to

[00:45:25] the disciples

[00:45:26] now.

[00:45:27] So this

[00:45:28] is the

[00:45:28] message,

[00:45:29] the gospel

[00:45:29] message,

[00:45:30] the gospel

[00:45:31] of Christ.

[00:45:31] Which is

[00:45:32] the way

[00:45:32] to

[00:45:32] salvation.

[00:45:33] The only

[00:45:33] way to

[00:45:34] salvation,

[00:45:34] the only

[00:45:35] way anyone

[00:45:36] can really

[00:45:36] be washed

[00:45:37] or bathed

[00:45:37] completely.

[00:45:39] He just

[00:45:40] got done

[00:45:40] showing them

[00:45:41] this picture,

[00:45:42] an example

[00:45:43] of the

[00:45:43] gospel,

[00:45:44] and he's

[00:45:45] telling them

[00:45:45] now,

[00:45:46] you're going

[00:45:46] to be

[00:45:47] preaching

[00:45:47] this soon,

[00:45:49] and I

[00:45:50] won't be

[00:45:50] here.

[00:45:51] You're going

[00:45:51] to be doing

[00:45:52] it,

[00:45:52] and you

[00:45:53] can do

[00:45:53] it.

[00:45:56] And we've

[00:45:57] seen our

[00:45:57] Lord is

[00:45:58] known in

[00:45:59] scripture to

[00:46:00] exemplify these

[00:46:01] spiritual truths

[00:46:02] with physical

[00:46:04] instances,

[00:46:05] and he

[00:46:05] goes big

[00:46:06] on the

[00:46:06] object

[00:46:07] lessons.

[00:46:08] And this

[00:46:09] one,

[00:46:09] he's

[00:46:09] exemplified his

[00:46:10] great love

[00:46:10] for his

[00:46:11] believers,

[00:46:12] for his

[00:46:13] followers.

[00:46:15] He loves

[00:46:15] them to the

[00:46:16] bitter end.

[00:46:18] He shows

[00:46:19] us how to

[00:46:19] humbly serve

[00:46:20] and be

[00:46:20] willing to

[00:46:21] serve others

[00:46:21] even though

[00:46:22] it might

[00:46:22] be beneath

[00:46:27] us.

[00:46:28] It's not

[00:46:28] beneath us.

[00:46:31] He's showing

[00:46:31] us his

[00:46:32] supernatural

[00:46:32] knowledge of

[00:46:33] who he is,

[00:46:33] where he

[00:46:34] came from,

[00:46:34] where he's

[00:46:35] going,

[00:46:35] what he's

[00:46:35] doing before

[00:46:36] it happens.

[00:46:38] He's

[00:46:39] showing us

[00:46:40] that he's

[00:46:40] the one,

[00:46:41] the only

[00:46:41] one,

[00:46:41] who washes

[00:46:42] us clean,

[00:46:42] completely

[00:46:43] clean.

[00:46:44] And he

[00:46:45] showed us

[00:46:45] the gospel

[00:46:47] by washing

[00:46:48] his

[00:46:49] disciples'

[00:46:49] feet.

[00:46:53] It's not

[00:46:54] just a

[00:46:54] nice story.

[00:46:56] It's the

[00:46:57] gospel

[00:46:58] exemplified.

[00:47:01] It's the

[00:47:02] gospel

[00:47:02] expressed

[00:47:03] as an

[00:47:04] act of

[00:47:05] humble

[00:47:05] service to

[00:47:05] his

[00:47:05] friends.

[00:47:09] And it's

[00:47:10] simple.

[00:47:12] And it's

[00:47:12] beautiful.

[00:47:15] And we

[00:47:16] should do

[00:47:16] what Jesus

[00:47:17] did,

[00:47:18] by humbly

[00:47:19] serving one

[00:47:19] another with

[00:47:22] great love

[00:47:22] to the

[00:47:23] end,

[00:47:24] and understand

[00:47:25] we can be

[00:47:26] now the

[00:47:26] ones to

[00:47:26] preach that

[00:47:27] gospel.

[00:47:29] So they

[00:47:29] can accept

[00:47:30] the message

[00:47:31] of the

[00:47:31] gospel,

[00:47:32] and by

[00:47:32] that being

[00:47:33] accepting

[00:47:34] Christ and

[00:47:35] accepting

[00:47:36] the Father,

[00:47:37] they can gain

[00:47:38] access by

[00:47:38] what we see

[00:47:40] Jesus do,

[00:47:40] we're doing.

[00:47:41] It's not

[00:47:42] beneath us.

[00:47:44] Be humble

[00:47:45] so that others

[00:47:46] can come in

[00:47:46] too.

[00:47:48] Amen.

[00:47:49] Please stand

[00:47:50] with me as

[00:47:51] we close in

[00:47:52] prayer.

[00:47:57] Once again,

[00:47:58] Lord Jesus,

[00:47:59] we come.

[00:48:00] We're thankful

[00:48:01] for this

[00:48:02] morning.

[00:48:03] We're

[00:48:03] celebrating

[00:48:04] people who

[00:48:05] have been

[00:48:05] baptized.

[00:48:06] I pray that

[00:48:07] their testimony

[00:48:08] goes out

[00:48:08] before them

[00:48:09] and so others

[00:48:09] can hear about

[00:48:10] the great

[00:48:11] things that

[00:48:11] you've done

[00:48:11] in their

[00:48:11] lives and

[00:48:12] they may be

[00:48:13] drawn to

[00:48:13] your love

[00:48:14] through them.

[00:48:16] Help us to

[00:48:16] preach this

[00:48:17] gospel.

[00:48:18] We can see

[00:48:18] how it can

[00:48:19] be shown in

[00:48:19] an act of

[00:48:21] service,

[00:48:21] by washing

[00:48:22] someone's

[00:48:22] feet,

[00:48:23] there's

[00:48:24] always more

[00:48:24] to your

[00:48:24] words than

[00:48:25] we ever

[00:48:25] know.

[00:48:26] Help us

[00:48:26] to be

[00:48:27] comfortable

[00:48:28] also not

[00:48:29] understanding

[00:48:29] everything.

[00:48:30] Help us

[00:48:31] find joy

[00:48:32] in trusting

[00:48:33] you through

[00:48:33] those times

[00:48:34] where we

[00:48:34] want to

[00:48:34] know and

[00:48:35] we just

[00:48:35] don't.

[00:48:36] Help us

[00:48:36] understand it's

[00:48:37] okay not to

[00:48:38] know.

[00:48:38] and we

[00:48:39] find peace

[00:48:40] and comfort

[00:48:41] in trusting

[00:48:42] you.

[00:48:43] That's a

[00:48:44] lesson we

[00:48:44] all still

[00:48:44] need to

[00:48:45] learn I'm

[00:48:45] sure.

[00:48:46] Lord give

[00:48:47] us a great

[00:48:47] week.

[00:48:48] There are

[00:48:48] many prayer

[00:48:49] requests that

[00:48:49] we haven't

[00:48:50] spoken about

[00:48:50] but people

[00:48:51] hurting that

[00:48:52] we know in

[00:48:52] our families

[00:48:53] and in our

[00:48:53] friend groups

[00:48:55] hurting need

[00:48:55] healing.

[00:48:57] You know all

[00:48:57] those things

[00:48:57] Lord minister to

[00:48:58] each and every

[00:48:59] one of those

[00:49:00] people and their

[00:49:00] family members

[00:49:02] always all to

[00:49:03] your glory.

[00:49:03] We pray in

[00:49:04] Jesus name.

[00:49:04] Amen.
