[00:01:00] [SPEAKER_00]: And now, here's Elgin.

[00:01:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Brothers and sisters, I welcome you in the name of our risen Savior, Jesus Christ, to another

[00:01:09] [SPEAKER_01]: episode of Words of Inspiration where we explore the timeless truth of the Bible and how they

[00:01:16] [SPEAKER_01]: apply to our daily lives.

[00:01:19] [SPEAKER_01]: Today we're discussing a profound biblical principle.

[00:01:24] [SPEAKER_01]: Obedience is better than sacrifice, which is inspired by Psalm 119.

[00:01:33] [SPEAKER_01]: This phrase may sound familiar because it's a key statement from the prophet Samuel in

[00:01:40] [SPEAKER_01]: 1 Samuel 15 verse 22 where he tells King Saul,

[00:01:46] [SPEAKER_01]: Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifice as much as in obeying the Lord?

[00:01:53] [SPEAKER_01]: To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.

[00:02:00] [SPEAKER_01]: But what does that really mean for us today?

[00:02:03] [SPEAKER_01]: How does it shape our relationship with God?

[00:02:06] [SPEAKER_01]: And how does it connect to the powerful message of Psalm 119?

[00:02:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Let's start by unpacking with Samuel man.

[00:02:16] [SPEAKER_01]: In this moment, Samuel is confronting Saul after he disobeyed God's command.

[00:02:22] [SPEAKER_01]: Saul was supposed to destroy everything from a battle, but instead he kept the best livestock,

[00:02:29] [SPEAKER_01]: claiming he would sacrifice them to the Lord.

[00:02:32] [SPEAKER_01]: On the surface Saul's intention might seem honorable.

[00:02:37] [SPEAKER_01]: After all, he planned to offer sacrifices to God.

[00:02:41] [SPEAKER_01]: But Samuel's response reveals a deeper truth.

[00:02:44] [SPEAKER_01]: God values obedience over ritualistic sacrifice.

[00:02:49] [SPEAKER_01]: You see, sacrifice can be an outward act, a thing that we do to appear religious or to meet certain expectations.

[00:02:59] [SPEAKER_01]: But obedience, true heartfelt obedience demands a deeper inward commitment to God's will.

[00:03:07] [SPEAKER_01]: It's about aligning our actions with God's word, even when it's difficult, inconvenient or goes against our own desires.

[00:03:18] [SPEAKER_01]: Now let's turn to Psalm 119.

[00:03:21] [SPEAKER_01]: A beautiful and extensive meditation on the value of God's word

[00:03:26] [SPEAKER_01]: and the importance of living in obedience to it.

[00:03:31] [SPEAKER_01]: This Psalm is a declaration of the Psalmist's deep love and commitment to God's command.

[00:03:38] [SPEAKER_01]: In verse 10, the Psalmist writes,

[00:03:41] [SPEAKER_01]: I seek you with all my heart. Do not let me stray from your commands.

[00:03:46] [SPEAKER_01]: This is a heart that longs to obey, not just to go through the motions.

[00:03:51] [SPEAKER_01]: We see the Psalmist expressing a consistent desire to live according to God's statutes.

[00:03:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Verse 33 says,

[00:04:05] [SPEAKER_01]: And verse 105, one of the most famous lines declares,

[00:04:11] [SPEAKER_01]: Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path.

[00:04:16] [SPEAKER_01]: This verse illustrates how obedience to God's word guides us, keeps us on the right path, and helps us avoid the pitfalls of life.

[00:04:26] [SPEAKER_01]: But let's be real, obedience isn't always easy.

[00:04:31] [SPEAKER_01]: It often requires us to set aside our own plans, our own understanding and trust God's wisdom.

[00:04:38] [SPEAKER_01]: This is where we see the connection between Psalm 119 and the idea that obedience is better than sacrifice.

[00:04:47] [SPEAKER_01]: The Psalmists wasn't just content with knowing God's word, they were committed to living it out.

[00:04:53] [SPEAKER_01]: Their obedience wasn't about checking off a list of religious duties,

[00:04:58] [SPEAKER_01]: but about cultivating a life that honors God in every action, thought, and decision.

[00:05:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Supporting this in the New Testament, James 1 and 22 tells us,

[00:05:11] [SPEAKER_01]: Don't merely listen to the word and so deceive yourselves.

[00:05:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Do what it says.

[00:05:16] [SPEAKER_01]: This echoes the heart of Psalm 119.

[00:05:20] [SPEAKER_01]: Our relationship with God is meant to be lived out in obedience, not just heard or spoken about.

[00:05:28] [SPEAKER_01]: And in John 14 and 15, Jesus himself says,

[00:05:32] [SPEAKER_01]: If you love me, keep my commands.

[00:05:35] [SPEAKER_01]: This statement brings us full circle.

[00:05:38] [SPEAKER_01]: Our love for God is expressed not through outward rituals or sacrifice, but through our daily lived obedience to his will.

[00:05:48] [SPEAKER_01]: So what does that mean for us today?

[00:05:51] [SPEAKER_01]: It means that God is looking for hearts that are fully devoted to him,

[00:05:55] [SPEAKER_01]: not just hands that are busy with religious activities.

[00:05:59] [SPEAKER_01]: It's reminder that while sacrifice has its place, true obedience,

[00:06:05] [SPEAKER_01]: stemming from the heart that seeks to honor God is what pleases him most.

[00:06:11] [SPEAKER_01]: As you go through a week, I encourage you to meditate on Psalm 119

[00:06:16] [SPEAKER_01]: and let it inspire a deeper commitment to living out God's word in your daily life.

[00:06:23] [SPEAKER_01]: Remember, it's not about grand gestures.

[00:06:27] [SPEAKER_01]: It's about everyday choices to follow God's path even when it's challenging.

[00:06:35] [SPEAKER_01]: I thank you for spending time with me on today and I look forward to our conversation on tomorrow.

[00:06:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Until then, God bless.
