[00:00:55] Today we will be discussing on the topic of surely, taking from Psalms 23 verse 6, which reads surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

[00:01:15] The main theme of Psalm 23 is the divine shepherd ship of God, and the comprehensive care he provides to his followers. authored by a king David who himself was a shepherd in his youth, to Psalm uses pastoral imagery to illustrate the relationship between God and his people,

[00:01:35] likening it to that of a shepherd and his sheep. This relationship is characterized by guidance, provision, protection, and constant presence, which collectively assures us of our safety and well-being under God's watchful care. When the Holy Spirit gave me the theme surely, I did not understand why.

[00:02:00] But as I began to think about the life of David, it made sense. So I wanted to take a few moments to discuss some of the highlights of David's life. One, he was anointed by Samuel.

[00:02:15] David was anointed by the prophet Samuel as the future king of Israel while still a young shepherd, working God's selection of him over King Saul, which is found in 1 Samuel. Chapter 16 verses 1 to 13. Number 2, David's victory on Galaya. David's faith in God was famously demonstrated when he defeated Galaya.

[00:02:40] The giant Philistine warrior with a sling and a stone. This victory brought David national fame and established him as a military hero. He can read more about that in 1 Samuel 17. Number 3, Saul's jealousy and pursuit. King Saul consumed by jealousy over David's rising popularity sought to kill him.

[00:03:04] David spent several years fleeing from Saul, and ordeal during which he continually spared Saul's life, showing his respect for Saul's position as God is anointed king. Number 4, becoming King over Judah and then all Israel. David was first made king over Judah and later became King of all Israel.

[00:03:27] His reign was marked by a consolidation of the kingdom and expansion of his territories. Number 5, bringing the arch to Jerusalem. David brought the arch of the covenant to Jerusalem and enjoy his procession. Demonstrating his commitment to centering the worship of Yahweh in the national life of Israel.

[00:03:51] Number 6, the Davidic covenant. God made a covenant with David promising that his dynasty would endure forever. A promise ultimately fulfilled in the coming of Jesus Christ, who is a descendant from David according to the flesh. Number 7, Bashiva and Euraya.

[00:04:13] One of the darkest episodes in David's life involved his adultery with Bashiva and the subsequent murder of her husband Euraya. This sin led to severe consequences for David and his family, including the death of his child and ongoing strife within his household. Number 8, repentance and forgiveness.

[00:04:35] After being confronted by the prophet Nathan, David repentant of his sin with Bashiva and Euraya. His penitential prayers are captured in Psalm like Psalm 51, showing his deep remorse and desire for restoration with God. Number 9, Absalom's rebellion. David faced a painful rebellion led by his own son Absalom.

[00:05:01] We forced him into temporary exile from Jerusalem. This event was both a political and personal crisis, highlighting the familial troubles prophesied by Nathan in 2 Samuel 15 through 18. Number 9, final years in preparation for the temple. David spent his final years making extensive preparations for the construction of the temple,

[00:05:28] which his son Solomon would build. He gathered materials, provided plans and organized labor, ensuring that the sanctuary would be a magnificent center for the worship of God. Number 10, Death and Legacy. David died after 40 years as King, leaving a mixed legacy of profound faithfulness, mixed with serious moral failures.

[00:05:55] However, his heart for God is contributions to the worship of Israel through his songs, and his central role in the unfolding of the biblical salvation history, mark him as a pivotal figure in Scripture. Although the word does not tell us exactly when Psalm 23 was written,

[00:06:15] we need only look at David's life to see how God was there for him. When I think about verse 4 where it says, even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for you are with me.

[00:06:31] You're right and your staff, they comfort me. It speaks to David's confidence in the Lord, no matter what life put in front of him. And his realization at God is our shepherd, protects us with his right against the enemy,

[00:06:45] and uses his staff to pull us back in line when we're going straight. Is this knowledge and comfort that created David's surely? Roseness's life is a powerful testimony to the complexities of walking with God amidst human imperfection, showing how divine grace, forgiveness,

[00:07:12] and guidance can surely shape a life dedicated to servant and honoring God. I thank you for spending time with me on today and I look forward to our conversation on tomorrow until then, God bless. This program is cared for by listeners who care,
