[00:01:00] [SPEAKER_00]: And now here's Elgin.

[00:01:02] [SPEAKER_01]: Brothers and sisters, I welcome you, whoever you are, wherever you are, and whenever you're

[00:01:09] [SPEAKER_01]: listening to another edition of Words of Inspiration.

[00:01:14] [SPEAKER_01]: And today we're diving into a powerful theme that resonates deeply in the heart of the

[00:01:20] [SPEAKER_01]: Gospel.

[00:01:22] [SPEAKER_01]: Redemption

[00:01:24] [SPEAKER_01]: Our inspiration comes from the book of Philemon, a brief yet profound letter written by

[00:01:31] [SPEAKER_01]: the apostle Paul.

[00:01:33] [SPEAKER_01]: It is a story of transformation, reconciliation, and the incredible power of being redeemed.

[00:01:43] [SPEAKER_01]: The book of Philemon is a personal letter from Paul to a man named Philemon, a Christian

[00:01:49] [SPEAKER_01]: leader in the early church.

[00:01:52] [SPEAKER_01]: It centers around Onesimus, a runaway slave who belonged to Philemon.

[00:01:58] [SPEAKER_01]: After fleeing from his master, Onesimus encountered Paul, who was in prison at the time.

[00:02:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Through Paul's ministry, Onesimus became a believer in Christ, a moment that marked the

[00:02:11] [SPEAKER_01]: beginning of his redemption.

[00:02:14] [SPEAKER_01]: The name Onesimus actually means useful or profitable, but as a runaway slave he was

[00:02:21] [SPEAKER_01]: anything but in Philemon's eyes.

[00:02:25] [SPEAKER_01]: However, after his conversion, Onesimus' life was completely transformed.

[00:02:32] [SPEAKER_01]: He went from being a fugitive slave to being a beloved brother of Christ.

[00:02:38] [SPEAKER_01]: This is where the theme of redemption shines through.

[00:02:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Redemption is at the very heart of the Christian message.

[00:02:46] [SPEAKER_01]: It is an act of being bought back, set free, and given a new identity and purpose.

[00:02:54] [SPEAKER_01]: In the case of Onesimus, redemption meant more than just being forgiven for running

[00:02:59] [SPEAKER_01]: away.

[00:03:00] [SPEAKER_01]: It meant being welcomed back not as a slave but as a brother in the Lord.

[00:03:06] [SPEAKER_01]: Paul's letter to Philemon appeals to this higher truth.

[00:03:13] [SPEAKER_01]: In chapter 1, verse 16, reading from the New International Version, Paul writes,

[00:03:21] [SPEAKER_01]: No longer as a slave, but better than a slave, as a dear brother.

[00:03:26] [SPEAKER_01]: He is very dear to me, but even dearer to you, both as a fellow man and as a

[00:03:33] [SPEAKER_01]: brother in the Lord.

[00:03:35] [SPEAKER_01]: This verse encapsulates the essence of redemption.

[00:03:39] [SPEAKER_01]: When we are redeemed by Christ, we are no longer defined by our past mistakes or

[00:03:45] [SPEAKER_01]: our old identities.

[00:03:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Instead, we're given a new status, sons and daughters of God, and brothers and

[00:03:52] [SPEAKER_01]: sisters in Christ.

[00:03:54] [SPEAKER_01]: Redemption transforms relationships, heals wounds, and restores what was lost.

[00:04:02] [SPEAKER_01]: So what does this story mean for us today?

[00:04:06] [SPEAKER_01]: Just like Onesimus, each of us has a past that may be marked by mistakes, failures,

[00:04:12] [SPEAKER_01]: or even rebellion.

[00:04:14] [SPEAKER_01]: But the message of the gospel is that through Jesus Christ we can be redeemed.

[00:04:19] [SPEAKER_01]: We are not bound by our past.

[00:04:22] [SPEAKER_01]: Instead, we are set free to live a new life in Christ.

[00:04:26] [SPEAKER_01]: This story also challenges us in how we view others.

[00:04:30] [SPEAKER_01]: When Paul asks Philemon to receive Onesimus back, not as a slave but as a brother,

[00:04:38] [SPEAKER_01]: he was calling on Philemon to see him through the lens of redemption.

[00:04:42] [SPEAKER_01]: As Christians we are called to extend the same grace to others, to see beyond

[00:04:48] [SPEAKER_01]: their past and recognize the potential of transformation through Christ.

[00:04:53] [SPEAKER_01]: Redemption also calls us to take action.

[00:04:56] [SPEAKER_01]: Paul didn't just tell Onesimus to go back, he advocated for him, even offering to pay

[00:05:03] [SPEAKER_01]: any debt Onesimus might owe.

[00:05:06] [SPEAKER_01]: In the same way we are called to be advocates of redemption in the lives of others,

[00:05:12] [SPEAKER_01]: helping them to find their way to freedom and a new life that Christ offers.

[00:05:17] [SPEAKER_01]: The story of Philemon, Onesimus, and Paul is a powerful reminder of the

[00:05:24] [SPEAKER_01]: transforming power of redemption.

[00:05:27] [SPEAKER_01]: It shows us that no one is beyond the reach of God's grace and that through Christ we are all

[00:05:32] [SPEAKER_01]: offered a new identity and a new purpose.

[00:05:36] [SPEAKER_01]: As redeemed people, we are called to live in this truth, to extend grace to others

[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_01]: and to walk in the freedom that Christ has given us.

[00:05:46] [SPEAKER_01]: Brothers and sisters, let's embrace our identity as the redeemed of the Lord.

[00:05:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Let's see ourselves and others through the eyes of grace and let the story of redemption

[00:05:57] [SPEAKER_01]: shape how we live and how we love.

[00:06:01] [SPEAKER_01]: I thank you for spending time with me on today and I look forward to our conversation on tomorrow.

[00:06:08] [SPEAKER_01]: Until then, God bless.
