Like a tree, you’ve been blessed to bear fruit—but that fruit is not for you alone. God blesses us so that we can bless others. The more we give, the more we grow, and the more God works through us to impact the world around us.
[00:00:37] Welcome to the Bible Speaks with your host, Elgin Carelock.
[00:00:42] The Bible Speaks is a daily podcast dedicated to sharing the good news of Jesus Christ,
[00:00:49] rightly dividing the word of truth and learning how to apply it to our daily lives.
[00:00:55] You may contact Elgin at the address given at the end of the broadcast, and now here's
[00:01:01] Elgin.
[00:01:03] Brothers and sisters, we welcome you in the name of our risen Savior, Jesus Christ,
[00:01:09] to another episode of the Bible Speaks where we explore biblical principles and apply them to
[00:01:16] our everyday lives.
[00:01:19] And today I have the pleasure of sharing our time together with a powerful man, a guide,
[00:01:25] Pastor Darrell Brooks, and we're going to have a discussion on our responsibility as children of the
[00:01:34] Almighty God. Our topic today is no tree eats its own fruit.
[00:01:43] Our scripture-lenspiration comes from Genesis 12, verse 2, and reading from the complete Jewish Bible,
[00:01:52] it reads, I will make you a great nation. I will bless you and I will make your name great,
[00:02:01] and you are to be a blessing. The focus of our discussion is the final part of verse 2,
[00:02:10] where Abram is being told, you are to be a blessing. God promised to bless Abram, but not so
[00:02:19] Abram could, or it does bless himself. Abrams blessings were meant to flow through him to others,
[00:02:27] and that brings us to our theme today. No tree eats its own fruit. Have you ever seen a tree
[00:02:36] eating the fruit that produces? Of course not. A tree bears fruit for the benefit of others.
[00:02:45] The fruit nourishes people, whether it's animals, people, or even a soil around it.
[00:02:53] And just like a tree we grow, we produce fruit, but the fruits of our labor, our blessings,
[00:03:00] our talents are not just for us. They're meant to bless others. God doesn't allow us to grow,
[00:03:09] prosper, or succeed solely for our own benefit. Just like Abram, we are blessed to be a blessing.
[00:03:17] Whether you are growing in your career, or have achieved financial success, or experience
[00:03:24] personal spiritual world, those blessings come with the purpose. In John 1516, Jesus says,
[00:03:33] You did not choose me, but I chose you. And appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit.
[00:03:42] Fruit that will last. The fruit that we bear in life is not meant to be stored up or consumed by us alone.
[00:03:52] It's meant to last, to multiply, to impact others around us.
[00:03:58] When we shift our minds at front, what can I gain from this? To how can I use this to serve others?
[00:04:07] We align ourselves with God's vision for our lives. God blesses us to contribute,
[00:04:14] to pour into others, and to advance His kingdom. However, it's easy to fall into the trap of
[00:04:22] thinking that the fruits of our labor are only meant for our own consumption. In today's
[00:04:28] culture, success is often seen as something to be flaunted or kept for personal gain.
[00:04:35] But think about it. If a tree were to keep the fruit for itself, it would rot and eventually be worthless.
[00:04:44] In Luke 12 verses 16 through 21, Jesus tells the parable of the rich fool who stored up grain and goods for himself.
[00:04:54] Think in the kick secure his future. But God says to him,
[00:04:59] You fool, this very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?
[00:05:08] This story shows us the futility of storing up blessings for ourselves without considering the impact
[00:05:15] we're called to make in a lives of others. God wants us to use our growth and blessings to help others grow.
[00:05:24] That's where the true value of our fruit lies,
[00:05:28] in how it nurtures and supports, guides and leads, and improves the lives of others.
[00:05:36] With that, I'll invite Pastor Brooks to join in our discussion.
[00:06:08] You said something in the scripture, Genesis, again that he speaks to Abram. He says,
[00:06:14] I will bless those who bless you. Actually, the second verses is,
[00:06:20] I will make your great nation and I will bless you and make your name great and you shall be a blessing.
[00:06:28] But I want to go back to the first verse of that. First verse says,
[00:06:31] Now the word set unto Abram, get out of your country from your country and from your father's house
[00:06:40] to a land that I will show you and then I will make you great. The thing is, the process of the
[00:06:47] tree in the growth is starts as a seed. And when you said no tree eats us on fruit, when you look at it,
[00:06:53] you don't reject the fact that that tree started to seed. It started in the beginning.
[00:06:57] It started on a foundation. It started being planted and that it was planted, it had to grow.
[00:07:04] The process of the seed is the root to mistake root first and it grows down deep down and then
[00:07:09] force it to itself up above everything that was placed at the top of it. So the process is I think
[00:07:15] that a lot of times we misadmonish tree is what does it take for you to get where you are?
[00:07:21] It took something you had to pay at price and no tree eats us on fruit is a way,
[00:07:26] no one devourses itself. In other words, what impact you've suffered, you've endured,
[00:07:34] you paid a price, you've had victory, failures and successes. Now your seed, your fruit is worth
[00:07:40] something because the Bible says that you shall know the tree by the fruit it bears. If you devour
[00:07:45] your fruit who knows you, who knows that price, who knows that experience. And so too often we have a lot of
[00:07:52] people and I'm not just talking in general what we've noticed is in ministry that a lot of the
[00:07:59] preachers that are coming up today that don't value the experience of the growth or the process
[00:08:04] of being planted. You understand the process of going through, they want to devour all the fruit
[00:08:11] for themselves. In other words, I got to this place I'm here but this is for me. Who's benefiting
[00:08:17] that fruit? Who's growing from that fruit? If no one's life is impacted by your ministry,
[00:08:27] if no one is growing from the fruit that you produce then what good is the tree?
[00:08:36] Yes, yes. We have a clear example of that when Jesus and the disciples are walking and
[00:08:44] became hungry and they went over to this big beautiful fig tree right? It was tall and had
[00:08:51] all these beautiful leaves and had all and Jesus went over and there was no fruit. No fruit.
[00:08:57] He had all of the show enough show to get me all the way to walk over to it but when I got
[00:09:02] there there was nothing there and what happened in the next morning when they went to went past that
[00:09:08] year again. It was with it. It was with it and dry it was cursed and you said something the word
[00:09:17] that comes to mind to me are not in the age of substance. When you when you praise your tree
[00:09:26] and you said, you said it so clearly you said everything and got Jesus attention. The tree
[00:09:32] compelled him to come near to it but when he got there, it had nothing of value worth receiving.
[00:09:43] It had no substance and had nothing to give life and so a lot of times the tree looks good.
[00:09:49] It you sound good. You can sing good. Your gift is doing everything. Your gift is making room for you
[00:09:55] but when it makes room for who's lives is changing. You can preach good. You got my attention
[00:10:01] but when I get close to you, with the substance, what can I eat? Can I sit at your tree
[00:10:08] and eat? Are you planning by the rivers of living water that bring forth life?
[00:10:13] And you shall be intrigued like a tree. By the rivers of living water?
[00:10:19] So what are you producing out of that gift or from that tree that will cause it to flourish
[00:10:25] in someone else's life? Yes. Can I eat from your tree? Can I eat from your ministry?
[00:10:32] Can I eat from your words of wisdom? Are you just a sound and a pink and silver and
[00:10:37] sounding brass? Are you just making noise? Do you have a sound but no substance?
[00:10:42] And I think that's then we're really talking about who's being blessed by your fruit.
[00:10:46] Because you said, and I will make the blessing and you shall be a blessing.
[00:10:52] Yes, and you know the opera. I love the word that he said,
[00:10:57] shout because you know what that says? That there is no choice. That if you understand what
[00:11:02] we're supposed to be doing here, then you shout. It's not optional. And I think that
[00:11:09] I was having a discussion with my nephew this morning. And I said, there's a date when you arrived
[00:11:15] here and there's a date when you leave here. And my question to you is between those two days
[00:11:22] does anybody know you were here? What did you do that others were enriched? What did you do
[00:11:33] with the gifts and the talents that God gave you to improve the lives of others?
[00:11:41] Do we understand that when he said, I will make your name great. It's because of your works.
[00:11:50] Your name becomes great because not because you are a great order or a great singer, but there
[00:11:56] people who can demonstrate the benefit from coming into your presence. Yes. And we have to remember
[00:12:05] you impact. Yes, please go ahead. No, I was just saying whose life had you impact? You know,
[00:12:13] I'm reminded recently something to just really listen to hard because sometimes you don't know
[00:12:20] the people that you impact or you're making a difference in their life. And it's literally one of my
[00:12:26] coworkers that I speak to every day when they're working and we have a good report, nothing,
[00:12:35] but I could have someone else said, hey, Dr. Bruce, you were at this program said what were
[00:12:43] you doing? I said what I was saying? He said, man, I know that place. I know those people. And
[00:12:48] he said, but I knew you were always a good person, but yeah, you know, now I know. I can see it.
[00:12:56] And I was like, okay, there's also a person that I spoke to all the time.
[00:13:01] He said, oh yeah, Dr. Bruce is awesome. I'm like, you know, we talked like that all the time,
[00:13:05] but he says, yeah, but I'll watch a ministry. He said, yeah, I followed you every Sunday.
[00:13:12] So what? That's right. I follow you every Sunday and the thing is it did not change
[00:13:21] the work in Barbeam. You know, some people just act different. Right. Yes. Because when I went
[00:13:26] to Met School, Dr. Bruce, I'm teaching, you know, working at the school with the students,
[00:13:31] and vice-versa. But to have one of your colleagues coming through this and I want to
[00:13:35] I follow you, your good person, I think you every Sunday. That cuts my heart because again,
[00:13:40] you never know when you're seeing or your treat or your fruit will bless someone's life.
[00:13:49] You never know the impact of how many people you're reaching. And I promise you, that's
[00:13:55] all right. We didn't need to discuss search when thinking about search because again,
[00:13:59] I said we were many hands. Now, and God opens the door. I don't deny him wherever I am,
[00:14:04] but the thing is when I'm in school, I'm just an educator. I'm not trying to be the pastor
[00:14:11] in school. If the kids ask me a question that answer, you know, the questions that they ask me
[00:14:18] when they find out or if they do something they would know. But my main goal is to educate you
[00:14:23] as far as education. I'm not trying to go and preach because I do that in Sunday. I do it all
[00:14:27] about the study. It's not on the passion for those I pastor. And I often say there's, I'm
[00:14:32] bringing this point at, but we talked about this in one of the parts before when we talked
[00:14:39] about positions and titles and gifting. And I often say this all the time that even to the
[00:14:45] people that I pastor and I cover, you know, for those who can send me to be the chief of
[00:14:49] possible. And I always say this, I'm only a chief of possible to those I cover. Yes.
[00:14:55] And I said, and I'm a spiritual father to those I've fathered and those who are under
[00:15:00] covering who call me spiritual father. And I said, then many sons and daughters that God has
[00:15:04] placed in my, and within my, my covering or their blood is on my hands that I had to give
[00:15:12] an account to. I said, so when people try to make people accept them as a chief of possible
[00:15:17] or, you know, the bishop, the jurisdiction, whatever they want to call the titles,
[00:15:23] I think it's in this. Again, I'm only that to those who God has placed within my care.
[00:15:29] Yes. And when we tried to make the world accept us for something that we're not,
[00:15:34] I'm not a chief of possible to everybody. So Dr. Ells, and I'm your brother in your
[00:15:39] you know, I don't expect you to call me a chief of possible, and then you know, no,
[00:15:46] no, you can call me Darrell. You can call me brother Brooks. You know,
[00:15:53] the thing is too often we want to be acknowledged, respected and received
[00:16:00] for fruit that we did not produce. Oh, say that. Say that. I'll say you went deep on it right there.
[00:16:08] I had to. That was here because two after we overlooked it.
[00:16:13] That's huge. And the other thought that I had while you were speaking is that
[00:16:22] share your fruit with others is because that fruit also has seeds. Thank you. Okay. And so
[00:16:31] if they're being blessed by that fruit, then they're going to take a portion of that seed
[00:16:36] and they're going to plant into someone else. And so God's kingdom begins to expand
[00:16:41] at an exponential rate because if they understand that their fruit probably
[00:16:48] are properly applied, leads to more trees. Sure. Then we have an opportunity to really see
[00:16:57] the kingdom restyens of the earth as we have been charged. And it comes from the level of self-lessness
[00:17:05] that you were mentioning earlier just just understanding that, you know what, I don't need a title.
[00:17:12] What I need to do is make sure that you understand who I represent and you understand that,
[00:17:20] you know, part of my very existence is that if you have been assigned to me,
[00:17:25] I'm going to appoor in everything that God has equipped me to appoor in. But even if you haven't
[00:17:31] been, I'm still going to impart some fruit to you because of the nature of love. That's what
[00:17:40] love is about whether it's a failure or a gopé, you know, whatever period of time you and I are
[00:17:48] in counter one another. I'm going to let you see the love of God and that too is fruit.
[00:17:55] Yes sir. It may not be the specific gift he gave me for the purpose that he called me to this earth,
[00:18:01] but you're still receiving the fruit because it is an outcropping of the understanding and
[00:18:06] love that I have in the relationship with God. And it is also the way that we show them what we
[00:18:20] have received. That's right. What was imparted? Now, I want to go just a tad bit deeper.
[00:18:29] Sure. Please please. Because seed that are planted will produce one man plant, one
[00:18:39] water guy gives increase. But seeds that are planted will produce. Now, will you produce fruit
[00:18:48] with seed or weeds that will choke your fruit? Oh wow. Wow. Because if you've been given the ability
[00:19:03] and the strength and the annoying thing are the gifting to produce fruit for the kingdom of God.
[00:19:11] And you in turn eat up your fruit because you failed as though no one else needs it.
[00:19:18] Now, what are you producing? Because you're going to produce. You're going to eat a
[00:19:24] produced fruit for the kingdom that will reproduce and reproduce because fruit has seed in it.
[00:19:29] Or you're going to produce weeds to choke out the seed that kills the fruit. Wow.
[00:19:37] And too often we see the discord among the brothers. We kill the fruit.
[00:19:43] When we turn other leaders instead of being spiritual, they restore such a way in the faith
[00:19:48] and start judging one another and killing each other's ministry where we become weeds,
[00:19:54] choking out the fruit. Yes. And when you're only about building your name,
[00:20:02] your brand and your title and forgot about building Jesus Christ and the kingdom of God,
[00:20:07] you're only choking out the fruit that produces more fruit for the kingdom of God.
[00:20:15] Yes. And the long term, in fact, is then your tree will cease to produce fruit.
[00:20:22] And then we go back to that same comment earlier where you become useless.
[00:20:28] Say, I don't need you. I don't know you. I've been structured
[00:20:36] clearly on what I expect. And I don't want to stand in front of them when he asks me,
[00:20:43] what would you do at the time I gave you? And then all of a sudden, I,
[00:20:49] I response start with, see what happened was. He's been very clear here and the interesting part
[00:20:59] is the space between helping people understand that every door that you're asking the Lord
[00:21:09] to unlock for you and to open for you starts with you being a door. You have to open up a door
[00:21:19] for someone else to receive the full blessings. I'm not saying that God doesn't bless you if
[00:21:25] you don't help others. I'm saying that for the fullness therein, it's about what did you do
[00:21:33] for the least of these. And we see the fruit of the society of our society not being Christ-driven,
[00:21:44] by just the way people behave. You see, I was walking out of a gas station the other day and this
[00:21:51] gentleman was coming in the door and he opened the door and he jumped through it really quickly
[00:21:57] so that he could get through it before it closed rather than just hold his soul like a go out
[00:22:02] earlier. Now do I think that had anything to do with race or anything like that? No,
[00:22:08] but what I tell you it is is that it's a disregard for others. It was only important for him
[00:22:16] to get through the door so the fact that someone else was coming the other way, well I figured it out
[00:22:21] now you need to figure it out. But you know it's not the realizations that we are our brothers
[00:22:30] and the thing is this I'm going to just say that too often we want it for ourselves, we demand
[00:22:36] it for ourselves but we don't want to give it to others. When you said that I was thinking about
[00:22:44] some of the best tasting fruit right now and I was in the grocery store but I didn't get it,
[00:22:52] you know why? Because it said seedless. Wow. It's good. It was, it was,
[00:23:02] you share than the other ones, brighter than the other ones bigger than the other and I'm pretty sure
[00:23:09] it was sweet but it said seedless and the other thing is this if anything is seedless it looks
[00:23:19] good. So let's we have fruit but if your fruit is seedless it ends with you. That's right.
[00:23:28] It ends with you there, there is no future, there is no tomorrow, there is no destiny,
[00:23:35] there's no legacy, you understand every father and mother that has children on the okay that
[00:23:41] means that my blood, my name will continue, you understand my legacy, my family will continue.
[00:23:48] What about ministries when you have some people that that you birthed out of,
[00:23:53] cover that they have no substance they have no seed. The fruit, what they will not produce.
[00:24:04] And the thing that that to take that one step further that wow it's the thought that
[00:24:11] it also wasn't what was intended right. A seedless watermelon happens through genetic
[00:24:16] modification or wasn't the way that God sent it. You changed it, you changed it and so now it's
[00:24:25] purpose. Yeah, the purpose of it now has been made finite, right? Because once I can zoom it,
[00:24:34] it's gone. Whereas he has sent us something that was infinite because every time my
[00:24:40] it has the ability to continue to perpetuate. Oh my God, this is something that's the same
[00:24:47] time because it's like don't give up on your purpose because your purpose is the thing
[00:24:52] that produces more seed. That's right. And so when you see my question is when you said that
[00:24:59] was who changed your purpose? Who changed your purpose? Strictious is what tended you
[00:25:05] when no longer obey? Yes right, what Paul said? Who so be Gile do you? Who so be Gile do?
[00:25:12] That's right. Who changed your perception? Who told you that you have to do this, this or
[00:25:19] this to get that? Who told you? Who changed the process? Wow. He missed through. Man, this is good.
[00:25:28] Wow. The amazing thing about sharing your food is that it creates a ripple effect.
[00:25:35] Yeah, just like a treat that provides fruit for many. Your blessings when shared can impact people
[00:25:42] that you never even realized. You never know how one act of kindness, one word of encouragement,
[00:25:49] or one generous gift can change someone's life and in turn they may go on to bless others. So
[00:25:57] you may not be a person who helped find the cure for cancer but you poured into the person who did.
[00:26:04] Yes, you did. And that made a difference. Yes. Because again, you never know who's life
[00:26:11] your impact but just that one person. That one person to told the story, listen, come see a man.
[00:26:19] I don't know his name but I don't know his name but I don't know his name. Yes.
[00:26:27] What impact have you made to call me to tell your story? We never know you and I would never know
[00:26:34] the lives that we've touched over the years. That's right. But someone else does
[00:26:40] because if they were blessed, they shared that touch, they shared that ministry
[00:26:49] or that blessing with someone. And they've been a good friend. Oh, absolutely. And you know,
[00:27:00] that you know, Peter and John got to the point where they were healing people with their shadow.
[00:27:08] Right. They didn't know. They didn't know. They're walking along and the sun is up and the
[00:27:13] shadows being cast depending on the angle of it. Sometimes it's far away as four or five feet.
[00:27:18] Okay. And they're moving through in the blessing of the Lord. It's just just
[00:27:22] performing all sorts of miracles that they're unaware of. But because of their willingness,
[00:27:27] because of them putting themselves in a position where he can use them to bear and through
[00:27:33] and share that fruit, then he takes it exceedingly above what they were even thinking. Right?
[00:27:40] They didn't even know. In some cases I'm sure that this was going on but through their
[00:27:46] willingness and through their fruitfulness, God multiplied that to miracles that they weren't even
[00:27:53] aware of. Because, you know, what else to they step to the planet? Yes.
[00:28:01] No one's ever said. No multiplication. That's right. They start to the planet and God added.
[00:28:08] God gave them increased. They didn't know who the English. But I thought you don't know when you
[00:28:11] just because it becomes a part of your character. It becomes a part of who you are. And when you do
[00:28:17] was the part of your character who you are, you know, people being this daily. By you just being
[00:28:23] I had a friend of yours and go in school. I had no idea. I promised you no idea. I didn't even
[00:28:30] remember the first God for you. I don't even remember them. But years, some years ago
[00:28:37] and I think maybe 20 plus. But he saw me in the street. How hey, my name man, how you doing?
[00:28:44] And I asked him, don't we make it? We let the school together. He said, oh, he said, man,
[00:28:50] we're just saying thank you. I said okay. But they did. He said, I was new at school and I
[00:28:59] school had no friends and you always talk to me. Even sat with me at lunch, you know, sometimes
[00:29:07] you always made me feel welcome. No matter where it was, I promise you, Dr. Elves.
[00:29:14] I don't remember this person to this day. I don't even remember. I don't even remember doing anything
[00:29:23] that he said I did. Wow. But that's what happens when it's who you are. When you just when
[00:29:31] you're just being you, the person that you are, the person that got intended and purposeed to be,
[00:29:38] it becomes a part of you. It's natural. You don't have to tell the fig tree to grow fig.
[00:29:43] Just want to grow fig. Oh, my God. Yes. Yes. Oh, because you're not going to go there. No, no,
[00:29:51] there's a, there's a, you kill me because I'll sit here thinking, you know, with you,
[00:29:57] earlier, who changed you, you say, you know, here you are fig tree trying to grow apples.
[00:30:02] All right. Whoo! It's so much. I want to call out, I'll continue to John the 15 chapter.
[00:30:12] Okay. And and and Jesus tells the disciples he tells them in John 15 and Levices these things,
[00:30:19] I've spoken to you that my joy may remain in you and that your joy may be full. And then he says,
[00:30:27] it deals with the relationships. He says, this is my command that you love one another as I love
[00:30:32] you. Greater love has no man than this that he laid down his life for his 14th and 15th
[00:30:41] is he says, but you're my friends. If you do whatever I command you. That's why. That's right.
[00:30:48] You're my friends if you do whatever I command you. He says, and no longer do I call you servants
[00:30:53] for a servant does not know what his master is doing that I have called you friends
[00:31:00] for all things that I've heard from my father. I have made known to you 16th verse is the kicker.
[00:31:07] It says, you did not choose me. Yes. But I chose you. That's right. A point of view, a point of
[00:31:15] you that you should go and bear fruit through. Yes sir. And that your fruit should remain
[00:31:23] that whatever you ask of the father in my name he may give you. Wow. Wow.
[00:31:35] I mean, there's so much meat on the bones there. I mean all the way down, beginning with the
[00:31:42] the whole concept of laying down your life. Right? And he's not asking you to die. He's saying
[00:31:48] that listen, you know, when you understand that this isn't about you, then then the laying
[00:31:55] down of your life is the consideration that the blessings, the gifts, the talents that he has
[00:32:01] given you are made manifest in their greatest capacity, we're using it for others. And that fruit,
[00:32:12] then like you said, well, we'll last and you have that. I mean, I share with you once before that
[00:32:18] I had the young lady come to me and just giving me every source of praise and hugs and because
[00:32:25] of the I obviously counseled her son and he not only came off of the path that he was on,
[00:32:33] but now he's in college and he's doing extremely well. And she said, you know, I don't know what
[00:32:37] you said to him, but it worked. And then I said, glory to God, but for the life of me, I don't remember
[00:32:45] that conversation at all. I remember his mom, I remember her, right? But I don't remember when we
[00:32:53] had the conversation where we had the conversation, no, no, what it was about. But but God is saying to
[00:32:59] us and do this lesson, he's saying to us, it's exactly right? You position yourself. I'll
[00:33:07] help you grow. I'll help you bear that fruit as long as you understand what that fruit is for.
[00:33:14] That's right. That's right. As long as you understand what that fruit is for.
[00:33:19] And so then in that, the Galatians 6 and 9 reminds us that let us not become weary and doing good
[00:33:27] for at the appropriate time will reap a harvest if we do not give up. So we have to keep producing
[00:33:35] fruit, keep sharing. No, that God will use our efforts to multiply but blessings far beyond anything
[00:33:43] that we'll ever see. Dr. King never saw the fruit of his labor but he planted so many trees.
[00:33:55] Oh, yeah. You know, he planted so many trees that helped change the course that
[00:34:00] of our existence here in this country and and we have that same responsibility and so in closing,
[00:34:08] you know, brothers and sisters, I just like you to ask yourself. How can I use the blessings
[00:34:15] in my life to serve others who around me can benefit from the fruit that God has allowed me to bear?
[00:34:23] When you embrace this mindset, you'll find greater purpose in your growth,
[00:34:29] greater joy in your success and a deeper connection to God's will for your life.
