Now, let's get ready for today's show content. Why most entrepreneurs fail at lead generation and how to fix it.

[00:03:58] So today we're going to talk about some of the common frustrations or roadblocks that we have when we try to generate leads on a consistent basis. We're going to talk about some reasons for failure. And also I'm going to give you guys some fixes. So it's often pretty common or it's an uphill battle for most entrepreneurs when they start trying to generate qualified, consistent leads. So there's a lot of frustrations. And here's a few of the frustrations I want to talk about.

[00:04:27] Low response rates. So many entrepreneurs invest their time and money in the lead generation campaigns and they get horrible results. So that's a frustration, a roadblock. Another one is overwhelming options. Right. You have social media ads, email marketing, webinars, SEO, and just the sheer number of options can leave you basically paralyzed. What do they say paralysis by analysis?

[00:04:53] So choosing the wrong strategy or channel can often lead to wasted resources and money and even burnout. Another frustration or roadblock is inconsistent results. Right. One month leads may be coming in and the next month is like radio silence. Right. So it's unpredictable. Right.

[00:05:13] And that can make it very hard to scale a business without predictable revenue and not not very hard, almost impossible to scale a business without predictable revenue. Another roadblock is lack of personalization. So many entrepreneurs fall into the trap of copying what's worked for somebody else. So you see, you know, somebody else does this and you know what?

[00:05:38] You're going to go and try the same thing to find only find out that the strategy doesn't work for your unique type audience. So you have to be very cognizant of that. It may be a mismatching tone or offer or delivery, and it can cause potential leads to pretty much lose interest. Another frustration of roadblock guys is feeling like they're selling too much. And entrepreneurs often worry that they're coming across as pushy or overly salesy.

[00:06:07] So you have to, you know, toe a line there. You can't be over the top with that. OK, so it can make you hesitant in terms of promoting your offers. But I'm going to let you guys know if you don't tell people what you have or the problems that you can solve, you're not going to make any money as an entrepreneur. So don't don't feel like you're selling too much unless you're just going way over the top. Another frustration of roadblock is burnout from trial and error.

[00:06:37] So testing new tactics over and over without a clear result can leave you feeling super frustrated. And I've seen this happen a lot. Matter of fact, it's happened with me on multiple occasions. It's just having that burnout from trying all kinds of different things because I wasn't able to lock in to what my audience needed and what the best lead generation strategies are. So that's really what today's topic is and what we're going to focus on.

[00:07:06] Another thing that holds us back as it pertains to being frustrated or having roadblocks is the importance of understanding the right strategy, guys. Um, why is understanding the ideal lead generation strategy ideal or so critical? So here's a couple of reasons. Number one, efficiency of focus. So when you know what works for your business and audience, you can stop wasting time and resources on ineffective tactics. Okay.

[00:07:35] This clearly allows you to focus your energy and your resources on strategies that deliver results. So efficiency and focus. And we're talking about the importance of understanding the right strategy. Also connection with your audience. You have to have a connection with your audience. Different audiences respond to different approaches.

[00:07:55] For example, uh, a corporate say B2B audience might prefer white papers and webinars while a younger B2C crowd might engage more on TikTok or Instagram or something like that. So knowing your audience's preferences ensure that you're ensures that your strategy can resonate, uh, and convert. So that's key. Excuse me. Uh, building confidence.

[00:08:21] So when you have a clear roadmap, guys, you approach lead generation with confidence, right? You're no longer, you know, throwing crap at the wall, hoping something sticks. So instead you're actually executing a strategy designed specifically for your goals. So that's building, building your confidence and scalability. That's super important. A solid lead generation strategy is the foundation for growth guys. No leads, no sales equals no business.

[00:08:50] But once you can identify what works, you can replicate that and scale your business. You know, knowing that you're going to get consistent results. So these are some of the things that are important, uh, in when it comes to understanding the right strategy. First, we talked about the frustrations in the roadblocks. Uh, then we talked about the importance of understanding the right strategy. Now we're going to talk real quick about failure.

[00:09:17] The top reasons entrepreneurs fail at lead generation. Number one, guys, outdated techniques and why they don't work anymore. This is super important guys. Um, overused tactics lose their edge, right? So techniques like generic cold emails, uh, pop-up ads, buying email lists and all that type of stuff used to generate, uh, you know, decent results.

[00:09:45] But today guys, consumers have become more discerning and skeptical. So you can't overuse tactics and that lost their edge. You got to be up on things, right? Uh, most times people now expect authenticity, uh, authenticity, personalization and value before they even start to engage with you or your brand. Okay. So outdated techniques and why they don't work anymore. That's one.

[00:10:12] Another reason for failure guys is the big old algorithm changes. So platforms like Google and social media giants, like a Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, they're constantly updating their algorithms. So what used to guarantee you visibility back in the day, man, you might not even get seen by people all on in your database or people that follow you. So now you have to be more refined, more strategic.

[00:10:40] And in order for you to be able to get those, those same type of views, like for instance, guys, organic reach on social media has plummeted is decreased like crazy. And it's forcing businesses to pretty much rethink how they connect with their audience. So that's another reason for failure algorithm changes. Then another reason, and this is super big too, guys, is shifts in consumer behavior.

[00:11:06] So modern audiences basically crave engagement, not interruptions. So if you're doing something and you get interrupted, a lot of people don't like that. Perfect example, right? Excuse me. I got a little cold here, but a perfect example is I'm in my office at my house last week and this guy rings the doorbell and I'm like, who the hell is this at 1130 in the morning ringing my doorbell?

[00:11:34] I go out and there's some dude trying to sell windows. And I talked about this on last week's episode, but number one, I'm like, bro, you know, nobody wants to be bothered like that. Okay. So he lost me right away. So we don't crave engagement. Excuse me. We crave engagement and not interruptions.

[00:11:56] So instead guys, audience prefer to engage with brands that offer value and things like educational content, interactive tools and social proof. So that's a shift in consumer behavior. Let's talk about another failure reason for failure is the copy paste strategies, right? So entrepreneurs often fall into the trap of actually mimicking what they see others doing, hoping that they're going to get the same results.

[00:12:26] And I'm going to tell you guys, most times you're not going to get those same results. Certain things in marketing you can't copy, right? You can't copy somebody else to, you know, to a T. Nobody can copy me. I resonate with a certain audience, you know? And so somebody can try to copy me, which I doubt if they're going to, but I resonate with a certain audience. It's my authenticity.

[00:12:53] You know, I'm authentic to myself and to the BEB audience. So here's some of the dangers of like a copy paste strategy. Number one, every business is unique. So a lead generation strategy that works for a tech startup may not work for a, just say a health and wellness coach, right? So industries, audiences, uh, and value propositions, they're all going to be different. So you can't just have that copy and paste mentality.

[00:13:23] Every business is unique and what works for one business guys, isn't going to work for another. Um, another reason or danger to copy and paste, uh, strategies misalignment with audience needs. So copy paste strategies don't account for specific pain points, desires, uh, and behaviors that your target audience might have.

[00:13:47] For example, like a, a service business might need relationship building strategies while e-commerce brand thrives on scarcity driven promotions. So misalignment with audience and needs. You have to understand, uh, another thing that you have to worry about is lack of differentiation. So when you mimic others, you know, you can make your brand blend into the noise, right?

[00:14:13] Without a unique approach though, you risk not being able to stand out amongst the crowd. So audiences usually gravitate toward businesses that stand out, not those that like kind of replicate others. So you want to be able to stand out. So lack of differentiation is a big, uh, copy and paste killer too. And the, the last one I'm going to talk about in terms of the copy and paste strategies is the personalization gap, right?

[00:14:41] So consumers today expect a tailored experience, right? So simply copying a generic, uh, strategy that doesn't give you a tailored experience. So that's why when you're, you know, connecting with your prospects or your audience, you want to give them that customized feel and that customized experience because people respect that and they appreciate that.

[00:15:07] Uh, another reason of for failure in terms of being able to get your lead generation strategies down is, uh, the impact of unclear messaging and mismatched targeting. So if your messaging isn't clear and you're not targeting the right audience, guess what? Your lead generation isn't going to work. So let's talk about, uh, unclear messaging. If your message doesn't clearly communicate what you offer and how it benefits the audience, you're going to lose potential leads.

[00:15:37] What's in it for me. That's all people care about. What problem can you solve? So many entrepreneurs focus too much on the features instead of the benefits. All the customer or prospect wants to know is what's in it for them. Another reason for failure is what we call mismatched targeting. So this is when you target the wrong audience and you're not going to get the results that you need.

[00:16:02] So if you're advertising a premium product or service and you're sending that out to a price sensitive audience, guess what? It's not going to work. So if you're selling Rolexes in Walmart, guess what? You probably aren't going to make any sales. So you have to have, uh, you don't want to have rather a mismatched, uh, target audience. And the last thing I want to talk about, uh, audiences is ignoring audience segmentation.

[00:16:30] So instead of segmenting or, or, or divvying up your audience, you're treating everybody as a, a single homogenous group. You're painting everybody with one broad stroke. So in terms of different segments, it could be new leads versus returning customers. It could be somebody that answered a yes to this question and no to that question. It could be somebody that responded to one lead magnet versus somebody that responded to a different lead magnet.

[00:16:59] So in terms of audience segmentation, the more, you know, about the person that comes into your, your audience or into your, your sphere, the better off you are because now you know how to speak to them. One of the things I talk about is you can sell the same product to three different verticals and your conversation in each vertical is going to be totally different. Now I've used this example before, but it's a, it's a real life example.

[00:17:28] I used to sell insoles, right? Stick into your sneakers or whatever. And, uh, to help your feet. And so if you had bad feet or falling arches, I would sell insoles. So the conversation for the Jay Jones insoles, when I talk to a field hockey athlete is a different conversation. I have speaking to a waiter or weight staff, which is a different conversation that I have speaking to somebody that's a marathon runner.

[00:17:56] They all can use the product, but the conversation is totally different. So ignoring audience segmentation, being able to speak the language of your audience. So you know what to say to be able to generate that lead. And today guys, we're talking about why most entrepreneurs fail at lead generation and how to fix it. Why most entrepreneurs fail at lead generation and how to fix it.

[00:18:24] We talked about some common frustrations or roadblocks. We talked about some reasons for failure. Now we're going to talk about some of the fixes. Okay. And this is super important. So let's look at number one, leveraging audience insights, leveraging audience insights. So basically guys, it's understanding who your audience is and what they want. So here's some of the ways you can leverage the audience insights.

[00:18:52] Uh, you can conduct surveys and interviews. So take the time to ask your audience guys about their challenges, needs, and preferences. They're going to tell you what they want and need and what they prefer. And then you take that and then you craft your verbiage and you're able to meet that, that audience member, wherever they may be. Now, some of the tools could be like online surveys, uh, one-on-one interviews, or even social media polls that can give you like valuable insight.

[00:19:22] So conduct surveys and interviews. Another way is analyze the behavioral data. So analytics tools like Google analytics, email metrics, social media insights, analyze those things and track what your audience engages with. So if you know that a certain topic is, is highly engaged versus another topic, that's your analyzing data. So you want to look for patterns guys.

[00:19:49] You want to look for patterns in there, your audience's behavior, uh, which content gets the most clicks, uh, which offers perform well, uh, what channels drive the most traffic. So you have to be analytical about the behavior. If you can get into your customer's minds, guys, you can make millions and millions of dollars. It's the psychology of understanding who your customer is, what they want, and how can you solve that problem? Okay.

[00:20:19] So here's an example of, you know, knowing your audience and being able to connect with them. So instead of targeting just small business owners, you could narrow that focus down, uh, to say female entrepreneurs in the creative industry who struggle with just say time management. So the more specific you're targeting, the more effective your strategy is going to be because you know exactly what to say.

[00:20:44] Now, most people are going to say, Oh man, that's going to limit me to, you know, my, my target audience. It's going to limit you, but you can go deeper as opposed to wider. All right. So that's something you have to think about. Uh, another one of the fixes is guys creating value. First offers creating value. First offers. So lead generation works best guys. When you give before you ask, right?

[00:21:12] So as a value first approach, that's going to build trust and position you as a problem solver. Instead of coming in there with your handout, you come out there to serve somebody, give them value added, you know, value first before you ask for something. And some of the ways you can do this is by offering free resources, you know, like lead magnets that address a specific pain point or provide like quick wins for them.

[00:21:39] Uh, an example could be eBooks, cheat sheets, templates, or webinars, whatever it is to offer free resources. All right. So you're giving before you're getting focus on educational content. People are tired of this nonsense out there, right? Content that educates your audience. It helps you build authority and it fosters trust.

[00:22:02] So, uh, blog posts, how to videos or podcasts that address common questions say in your niche can help establish you as a go-to resource, right? So black entrepreneur blueprint, the podcast you're listening to right now, we focus on helping black business owners launch, build and grow successful, sustainable businesses. And everything I try to give you is actionable content, things that are going to move the needle. I want you A to B.

[00:22:32] I want to give you that content to help you move. So fake focus on educational content. Uh, another thing is incentive engagement. Encourage your audience to take action with enticing offers. You know, for example, say a free consultation call or access to a private community. Those can be powerful incentives. And we're talking about value first offers right now. And this is under one of the fixes.

[00:22:59] So the first thing about how to fix this lead generation gap that you have from where you are to where you want to be, you know, you want to leverage audience insights. You want to create value first offers. Number three is focusing on alignment with business goals. So your lead generation strategy guys should be tightly aligned with your long-term business objective. So this ensures that your efforts are efficient and impactful.

[00:23:27] Your efforts need to be efficient and impactful. And I've talked about alignment a lot on the show before. You need to be in alignment. So in order to do that, you need to define your clear goals, right? Ask yourself what you're trying to achieve with lead generation. Is it to grow your email list, uh, generate sales, build brand awareness, uh, nurture or build relationship. And each goal requires a tailored strategy.

[00:23:55] Remember, it's not a cookie cutter strategy. It's not a one size fits all. And that's what people have to understand. When you have a lead generation system, it's just not one thing. It may be multiple levers in this lead generation system. Okay. And so you want to define clear goals and focus, uh, on alignment with your business goal. You also want to match offers to your sales funnel.

[00:24:24] Every lead magnet or offer should guide your audience further down the sales funnel. Understand what I'm saying. Every lead magnet or offer should guide your customers down. For instance, say a free checklist might work for top of funnel awareness, right? That's somebody that doesn't never heard about you, but you're giving them a free checklist. Now, something like a webinar could nurture leads that are maybe in the middle of the funnel. Okay.

[00:24:53] They've gotten some of your PDF downloads or checklist. Now you're offering a free webinar. So matched offers to your sales funnel. Another thing you want to focus on is you want to allocate your resources strategically, right? Invest in strategies and tools that align with your business goals and give you the best return on investment, that best ROI. So for example, if your audience lives on Instagram, focus on creating reels and stories

[00:25:22] instead of spreading your budget across, uh, channels that are less relevant. You got to be where they are, right? I always said you can make money by getting in front of the traffic, whatever your offer is, you need to get in front of that traffic and whoever can do that most efficiently and effectively is going to win. Then let's talk about now. Um, the power of personalization and we're talking about the fixes right now.

[00:25:50] So we talked about number one, some of the common frustrations of roadblocks. We talked about reasons for failure, and this is continuing to talk about some of the fixes. So the power of personalization guys, the personal personalization approach transforms your lead generation. I'm telling you, and this is something that you guys really need to pay attention for. And forgive me, I'm losing my voice.

[00:26:17] I have a little cold here, but, um, you want to tailor your messaging to your audience segments. Tailor your messaging to your audience segment segments. So differentiate how you speak to new leads versus returning customers. So for instance, new leads might respond, uh, you know, better to an introductory content while returning customers may be ready for a deeper type of engagement.

[00:26:43] So tailor your messaging to audience segments, uh, use dynamic content. All right. So you want to incorporate tools that allow you to customize content based on users behavior. For example, a personalized email subject line or dynamic website headline can significantly boost engagement.

[00:27:06] So if you go to my website, excuse me, black entrepreneur blueprint.com on the bottom right hand corner, or if you're doing it on a laptop or on the bottom, if you're on your, on your cell phone, you have questions. Are you a business owner? Uh, how long, what industry? And those questions are designed specifically to take you on your own specific journey through the website. What's most important to you?

[00:27:35] Is it marketing? Is it e-commerce? Is it scaling or growing your business? And based on the way you answer those questions, then it's going to take you to the part of the website that is, is basically geared for you. So it's giving you a personalized customer journey. So that's something that you, you want to be able to focus on.

[00:27:57] So using dynamic content, another, uh, power of personalization thing you want to do is empathize and solve people's problems. So address your audience specific challenges directly in your messaging. So now you're showing that you understand the pain points and you have a solution. So being able to empathize with somebody, Hey, I've been there before, you know, I I'm talking about it, but I've done it before. I know exactly where you are.

[00:28:27] So when you're able to empathize with somebody and, and solve a problem that they're trying to solve, that's big. Okay. So instead of, and here's an example of sending it like generic emails, uh, check out my new webinar. You know, you personalize it with like something like, uh, struggling with time management, join our webinar to master productivity in just 30 minutes. All right.

[00:28:53] So once again, it's the power of personalization. One thing I want you guys to really understand is that personalization right now is the key guys. People don't want to be talked to as a, as a group, you know, uh, they want to be feel that they're getting individualized attention. They're getting individualized answers to their, their problems. Okay. So instead of trial and error, why don't you guys start with some clarity?

[00:29:23] And so take the quiz, grow my biz quiz.com grow my biz, B I Z quiz.com. Basically it's going to determine what lead generation strategy is right for you. And it's basically designed guys to uncover the perfect approach that's tailored to your business goals and your audience. [00:29:50] So make sure you go to grow my biz quiz.com grow my biz quiz.com. Take that first step towards smarter, more effective lead generation. [00:30:15] It's impossible to grow in scale without being able to generate qualified, consistent leads. Go to grow my biz quiz.com grow my biz quiz.com grow my biz.com. Grow my biz. B I Z quiz.com. It's going to take you less than two minutes and you're going to come out with an actionable response. Now, in addition to that, guys, I've redone and rebranded the website.

[00:31:38] Connect with me on Twitter or X and that's Jay Jones zero zero one. J A Y J O N E S zero zero one. Connect with me on LinkedIn. Go to LinkedIn. Type in black entrepreneur blueprint, Jay Jones or Jay Jones black entrepreneur blueprint. Also connect with me guys on YouTube. I have additional content on YouTube that does not come on the show.

[00:32:02] Now for all you first time listeners, the show drops every Monday morning, 5 a.m. Eastern standard time on YouTube and all your major podcast platforms. So make sure wherever you're listening to this or watching this, make sure you hit that subscribe button. So you'll be alerted when the new episodes drop. Now let's get ready to get back to the last segment of the show. All right, guys.

[00:32:29] Uh, in this last segment, I really just want to drive home the importance of lead generation. So being a serial entrepreneur for 25 plus years, uh, business coach for 20 plus years, I, I've seen the gamut guys. I've seen the highs and lows personally and also through my clients. I've almost lost it all twice, but I've been blessed to be able to come back and both times build most separate multimillion dollar businesses. So I'm super blessed.

[00:32:58] So I'm speaking from know-how, not knowledge. Know-how comes from doing knowledge can be acquired by looking at something, reading something. And the example I always give is if, if they gave Jay Jones a manual, how to fly an F 16 fighter jet. Um, and they also gave me some videos and you know, I was in the, in the, in the cockpit in the back while somebody else was flying it.

[00:33:24] Does Jay Jones know how to fly an F 16 fighter jet? The answer is no. So knowledge can be acquired in many different ways. Know-how comes from doing. So when it comes to lead generation, trust me, I've started over 17 businesses. Uh, some of them failed, probably four or five were abject failures. You know, I had about four or five that was solid, you know, three or four that were real

[00:33:50] good and two or three that were multimillion dollar businesses. So when I say I've seen the gamut, I, I, I, when I look at it, I can understand and detect what it is. So there's probably no place that you are in your business that I haven't seen right now. And what it all boils down to is lead generation. You can be in all types of different industries, but the main industry you're in is the marketing industry. How do you separate yourself from your competitors?

[00:34:19] How do you generate consistent qualified leads? Not BS garbage leads, consistent qualified leads. You want to be able to make people raise their hand and say, yes, I'm interested and have them pre-qualified themselves. So when you finally get on a call or whatever your call to action is, that's somebody that is a qualified prospect, somebody that is qualified in your audience.

[00:34:47] And there's certain ways that you can do this. And one of the things that you need to understand is what is the best and unique strategy or strategies for you and your business based on your business, the vertical, how you like to operate, how your system operates. So if you like to be behind the curtain, like the Wizard of Oz, you're probably going to use a lot of lead magnets, right?

[00:35:13] But if you like to be out in front and you want to develop that trust and connectivity, you probably want to be or do something like webinars, you know, standing on the stage, things of that nature. So every business is unique and it's different. And I talked earlier today about the cookie cutter cats that are out here. Oh man, this worked for him. That worked for him. That worked for her. Yeah, I'm going to do that too. And usually what happens is we're late to the party.

[00:35:42] So by the time we get there and start trying to implement it, the game has already changed, right? That happened. And I was, thank goodness, I was on the top of the food chain when it came to e-commerce, you know, building, you know, products, physical products, businesses on Amazon and on my own, you know, website. So I started that in about 2014, 2015, and I was killing the game. I'm going to tell you now it's harder. Things have changed. It's harder.

[00:36:13] Nothing stays the same. And I always tell, you know, my clients and anybody that will listen in entrepreneurship, guys, you're never staying the same. You're not treading water. You're either going forward or you're going backward. That's it. And until you understand that and start to utilize the lead generation strategies to build your business and scale your business, you're going to be, you know, struggling against the current.

[00:36:42] Here's something I can tell you definitively right now. Now, if you have a serious lead generation system where you're just piling up the qualified leads, that is the key to solving all of your problems, right? You can become profitable once you hone that system down because you have the resources, the money coming in, the cash flow coming in.

[00:37:08] That cash flow is going to allow you to make some mistakes and still be able to stay on track. So, but if you don't have access to capital or lack of capital because you can't generate leads, guess what? You're never going to get out of the hole. The quickest fix is to be able to generate leads on a consistent basis, qualified leads. And here is the beauty of that, guys.

[00:37:34] There are people making hundreds of millions, tens of millions, millions, hundreds of thousands of dollars generating leads, not just for themselves, but for other businesses. I did an episode, which is one of the most downloaded episodes that I've done about starting a lead generation business. What you don't understand, there are people out there that may have the same problems that

[00:37:59] you're having right now, generating consistent leads, qualified leads, and they need somebody to help them. Guess what? They go buy leads. When I was in the mortgage business, when I first started my first mortgage company back in the late nineties, early two thousands, before it was just me, my business partner and a thermal fax, two telephones. And we were over this, this old, uh, deli was smelling like old goats in there.

[00:38:27] And the thing was, we used to buy leads because we didn't understand how to really generate them at that time. But once you learn how to generate leads guys, that that's a goal mine. You're opening the door for success, not just in your general business that you're working in, but being able to sell and generate leads for others. And here's a real life example.

[00:38:53] So I have a new mortgage business is smaller than the other one by design. I didn't want 50 employees, $12,000 a month rent, uh, all those headaches anymore. So it's me, a virtual assistant and my lead generation system. And the beauty of my lead generation system in the mortgage business is if I'm getting leads in that, you know, I'm not in states, I I'm not licensed in guess what I do. I'll sell the leads off.

[00:39:23] I'll sell them to other loan officers or other mortgage brokers like myself. Hey man, I got five leads that came in from Montana. I'm not licensed in Montana. I haven't even called them back yet. Do you want them? Oh yeah, you want them. Okay. Here are the parameters. That's $150 a piece, you know, and if they're live transfer calls, that's even better.

[00:39:47] So that lead generation, uh, business itself is hundreds of millions of dollars, billions of dollars in lead generation. Think about all the companies that don't know how to market that need leads, plumbers, electricians, lawn care people, gutter people, uh, carpet cleaners, doctors, dentists, uh, all everybody in every company needs leads.
