[00:03:37] Now let's get ready for today's content.
[00:03:39] And what we're going to talk about today guys is what to do when things aren't working out for you.
[00:03:45] So the first thing I want to do is acknowledge how tough it is to be a successful entrepreneur.
[00:03:51] You know there's so many things that can go wrong being an entrepreneur.
[00:03:55] You really have to be on your game and to be committed and serious about it.
[00:04:01] You don't want other things I always tell coaching my coaching students is you have to be committed entrepreneurship.
[00:04:07] You know that it's not a game. You don't play entrepreneurship.
[00:04:12] It's a science, it's a skill and you have to understand and learn it.
[00:04:15] And once you understand certain principles it's going to make it easier for you to be successful in any type of business endeavor that you embark on.
[00:04:26] So we're going to talk about a couple things that you can do when things aren't working.
[00:04:30] And when I say things aren't working that usually means that you're probably not making enough money to be sustainable for your business.
[00:04:38] Or you may totally be unhappy with what you've created. You've created a Frankenstein monster business.
[00:04:44] Ben Net done that.
[00:04:46] So as a serial entrepreneur for over 24, 25 plus years, you know I've seen the gamots and the highs and the lows and everything.
[00:04:54] And so for those of you who haven't heard my story, I've almost lost it all twice.
[00:05:00] Homes cause everything of value and I was blessed to be able to come back both times and build two separate multi million dollar businesses.
[00:05:10] But that doesn't mean that I have the answers to everybody's questions or even sometimes for my own.
[00:05:16] Because over my life span as an entrepreneur, I've started over 17 businesses.
[00:05:23] And if I could just off the top of my head five of them were abject failures. You know five of them were so so.
[00:05:30] I had a couple of good wins probably three or four real good wins and I've had about two or three great businesses.
[00:05:37] But along that way that journey of 20 plus years, you know I've had a lot of failures.
[00:05:44] And so what I've been been able to do guys is been able to learn from my failures and people always ask me they like man what uh, what's your superpower.
[00:05:54] And my superpower is I'm not afraid to try things. Now I'm not going to risk everything.
[00:06:00] I'm not going to be silly and just say yeah, to help with it. I'm pushing all the chips in but I'm not afraid to try things.
[00:06:07] I'm not afraid to have negative feedback. I'm not afraid to fail because I know that failure is a part of the process to reaching success.
[00:06:17] And so I couldn't be successful today without all of those failures that I've had through my entrepreneurial career.
[00:06:23] And so what we want to talk about today is what to do when things are not working out.
[00:06:29] And this is totally impromptu and so it's probably not going to be that long but I wanted to be super impactful.
[00:06:37] So the first thing that I would recommend if things aren't working out is evaluate your product or service, evaluate your product or service.
[00:06:45] Many times we think that we're the customer. And so just because we like something or we have an affinity to something,
[00:06:54] we think everybody else is going to like you too but that's not necessarily the case.
[00:07:00] One of my best friends literally just texted me while I'm on he's a big home automation guy right?
[00:07:06] And he always loves gadgets and things at that nature. And he tried to start a home automation business where you know you can come in, excuse me,
[00:07:16] coming to house you hit a button your lights go on to a certain setting, your air conditioning, your heat, you know the age back will go to a certain setting,
[00:07:25] you know the TV may come on and all of this stuff. And so he likes those gadgets but what he basically was trying to sell everybody else this stuff.
[00:07:34] And if you don't have a target audience mapped out, you're going to be in trouble. And so what he found out was especially coming out of the pandemic, a lot of people had some fiscal problems financially they were in bad shape.
[00:07:48] So you have to understand who your market is and how to attack that market. And so he was trying to compete with, he was doing security systems tying it in to home automation.
[00:07:59] So he's trying to compete with companies like ring, ADT and these bigger brands that have a lot to offer but they also have name recognition.
[00:08:10] And so when I was telling them I'm like dude, I said you're one man shot. I said if something happens to somebody system, how fast can you correct it?
[00:08:19] And so those are some of the things that you have to think about evaluate your product or service. Now if you have a niche and you're able to connect with that niche, then that's fine and you know what that niche wants.
[00:08:32] You know there are people that are making a ton of money selling home automation. He just hasn't been able to find that pocket yet.
[00:08:39] And so eventually what happened was he started, he did it for about six or seven months. Wasn't making any money and he ended up dropping the whole thing.
[00:08:49] And that's what happens a lot of times especially if you're not really passionate about what you do, your chasing paper instead of purpose.
[00:08:57] And when you don't get a quick return or a quick hit, what happens is that you're going to end up quitting.
[00:09:04] So the first thing I recommend is evaluate your product and or service. Okay now, the next thing I want you to do is evaluate your positioning.
[00:09:16] How have you positioned your product or service for success?
[00:09:19] Right, if you have them positioned it correctly, you're not going to sell it.
[00:09:24] And so I give the example and if you heard this before bear with me, I give the example of years ago, I was called into one of the top three financial advisors firms in the country to do some consulting work.
[00:09:39] And they asked me to come in to be able to listen to their training class and see if I had any recommendations.
[00:09:47] Now, this selling financial services, what I used to be back in the day a stock broker, that's before they changed the name to financial advisor,
[00:09:55] have, you know, my series 7, series 63 and my series 3, my commodities exam.
[00:10:01] And so as a financial advisor, your job is obviously to help people manage their money.
[00:10:07] So as I'm sitting in this training class, one of the ways that they told new financial advisors to get business was to go knock on doors in nice neighborhoods.
[00:10:18] And so they had it down to a son, you're not going to do all you stand back three feet.
[00:10:24] And then you say hi, my name is whoever I'm with, you know, whatever company I'm not going to call companies name out.
[00:10:31] But if I said, I guarantee 99.9% of you have heard the company.
[00:10:36] And so, and I'm saying to myself, how are you positioning yourself as a successful financial advisor that people would want to use?
[00:10:49] So when I think of a financial advisor, I think somebody that's in the office and they're handling and managing clients.
[00:10:57] Now, you're knocking on my door. You don't know who I am. You know, I may have a nice house. You don't know if I need my, you know, your services and you're wasting time knocking on door.
[00:11:08] How are you positioning yourself as an expert financial advisor?
[00:11:13] And the question is, you're not to me you look like a peddler because what I think of a financial advisor, if they're successful, then I'm going to be knocking on random doors.
[00:11:23] They're going to be at any office working with their clients. So positioning, evaluate your positioning. Where are you positioning your product of service in the market?
[00:11:33] Are you a high end product of service, medium product of service or low end product of service? How are you positioning?
[00:11:41] And so this may be one of the reasons that things aren't working out for you right now because you haven't positioned your product of service or yourself correctly.
[00:11:50] Okay, if you're trying to sell a high end product of service and things on a line, you know, I'll give you a perfect example. If you went into a Mercedes-Benz dealership and there was a dude in there with his half of your shirt.
[00:12:04] Talked in, the other half hanging out of his pants, his tires, you know, up to his neck and he has a suit that's three sizes too big. How are you positioning yourself as a successful Mercedes-Benz salesperson? You're not.
[00:12:20] You don't look the part. So everything has to be aligned and what we're talking about today guys is what to do when things aren't working and I'm just giving you a couple of tips and things you may want to try.
[00:12:32] First one is evaluate your product of service. Is there a need for two people wanting? You know, many times people will buy what they want before what they need.
[00:12:42] You could have an on sale, an 80 inch TV screen, right? TV for 80 inches in Walmart that was $900 that you had. You didn't plan on buying it. You don't need it, but you want it.
[00:12:57] Okay, so number one was evaluate your product of service. Number two, evaluate your positioning. How are you positioning your product, your service, your company yourself as it pertains to what you're selling.
[00:13:10] And once again, high end, you know, regular price and then there's low end. And when you're positioning yourself or your product of service, you have to have the things that will align with that.
[00:13:23] So if you're selling a high end product of service, you need a nice website. You know, you need to be able, you want to look good. You don't want to be selling doing mortgages and you're driving up in the car with with three hub caps off car smoking and you're going in for an appointment with somebody that's about to buy a million dollar home.
[00:13:43] It's not aligned. You may be the best freaking loan officer out there, right? But if you have in position, just sell for product of service correctly and everything isn't aligned, guess what? You're not going to make sales.
[00:13:56] So the next thing that you want to look at too is you want to continue to test ideas and not just test randomly or have has it, systematically. And I see this is where a lot of people make mistakes too.
[00:14:10] They don't have a system to test, right? So if you're coming out with a new product of service, right? You can get a focus group, a beta group.
[00:14:21] See what they think, let them give you feedback. You also can do split testing. So you can change your headline. You can change the image if you're running ads. And so you need to be able to continue to test systematically.
[00:14:34] And the people that understand or are able to create a successful system of testing are usually very successful over on business.
[00:14:44] I always say you got to be a man scientist, you got to put on your lab coat. You got to try. All right, I'm going to change the headline on this and I'm going to run, you know,
[00:14:59] and $5 of day for each one at the end of the five days which one is getting the best response. Okay, the first one got the best response. All right now I'm going to use that headline, but let me change the pictures.
[00:15:14] So I'm going to do one with one picture, one with another image. Let me run that for five days each, $5 a day, which one performs the best.
[00:15:23] Okay, the one with the with the new picture. And you keep trying different parts of your advertising or your marketing. You don't change them all at one time because now you won't know what made the effect or what calls your ad to go up in response or down in response.
[00:15:41] So you have to change one thing at a time and if you systematically go and create that testing system, then you're going to learn what makes sense. And then whenever you find that thing that hits.
[00:15:53] That's when you can direct your resources to it. The problem is we come up with one ad concept. If it doesn't work, oh man, this business is no good. Oh, this product won't sell.
[00:16:05] It's not going to sell because you didn't give it a chance yet. Okay, you tried one ad and Facebook or Instagram and it didn't work. And you think your business or product or services down the tubes.
[00:16:17] So you have to understand how to systematically test for products or services. Okay, and whatever works, then that's what you focus on. But you need to have patience guys. So if you're a just say you're selling hot sauce right.
[00:16:35] What I found was my best response was it was it's a little video and it's a video comparing my hot sauce, which is a premium brand hot sauce hell yeah hot sauce versus the water down hot sauce.
[00:16:50] So I did a demonstration where I took several of my hot sauce brands versus the top brands and I poured them out on a whiteboard and I held the whiteboard up. And you could see how most of the other top brands was so full of liquid and it were running.
[00:17:07] It was all, you know, it was it was horrible versus mine that was a little bit thicker in chunkier because we use high end premium ingredients. We don't have a water down hot sauce.
[00:17:19] And so what I had to find out was the pictures weren't working. So I had to go to video and that video has been my most productive lead magnet or lead generation to help me sell hell yeah hot sauce.
[00:17:33] And so you have to continue to test now what I've done is I've actually made several versions of that video and I'm testing that along with other things.
[00:17:43] And so when things aren't working out guys you can't stay pat, you have to do different things to move the needle.
[00:17:51] And if you don't move the needle guys then you're not going to get be successful or make a change.
[00:17:57] And once again, once you understand the systems it's being able to create systems and processes to make you successful.
[00:18:06] And what I mean by that is it doesn't matter what your business is, it doesn't matter what you sell or whatever.
[00:18:12] If you have a formula that you can always go back to then you can find out what successful and I know as an entrepreneur and business owner a lot of times we get we fall in love with our products or services right you know there are babies it's like we created it and damn if you know I'm going to make this work.
[00:18:33] And sometimes you got to be able to let it go you're trust me you got to let it go I told you earlier that I started 17 businesses and I've hung on to a couple of them way too long.
[00:18:46] You know I needed to look at the you know the writing on the wall sometimes is just not going to be you may have to come back to something or you may find out you know what guess what this isn't going to work.
[00:18:58] And I'm really I don't have the stomach to go through and continue to push forward.
[00:19:02] And so what we're talking about today guys is what to do when things are not working and things not working what I'm really talking about pretty much is you're not making a money that you need to make in your business.
[00:19:14] So one of the ideas that I gave you guys is evaluate your product of service.
[00:19:20] The second one was evaluate your positioning how are you positioning your product of service number three is for the third one is continue to test ideas and create a system for testing.
[00:19:32] Okay and then once you find that out guys that's when you try to scale.
[00:19:38] Okay, that's when you try to scale but if you look at it as I said as a mad scientist meaning that you know the deductive reasoning okay we're going to try this we're going to try that.
[00:19:50] But I want to break down this real quick too about you know your product and or service.
[00:19:56] So always use problem solution result.
[00:20:01] If I can solve a problem then I can find out who has that problem.
[00:20:06] I can give them the solution which is my product of service and then I'm going to tell them what the results are or what's going to happen when you use my product and or service.
[00:20:16] So the easiest way guys to me is solving a problem. I know I talk about passion too because I have an online course pinpoint monetize your genius right and your genius is the intersection of your passion and your talent but people don't know how to monetize that.
[00:20:33] So if you're interested in that go to the website black entrepreneur blueprint.com but the easiest way with with you know less obstacles is finding a problem creating a solution and selling whatever that solution is so let me give you a real life or an example here right.
[00:20:53] So when you talk about problem solution result and it's funny because many times when I have coaching students come to me coaching clients come to me they're not necessarily solving a problem.
[00:21:05] They may be selling stuff like athletic wear or t-shirts and that's really not a problem but it has to be a motivation for you to buy it so I'm going to break this problem solution result down real quick.
[00:21:18] All right so problems slash motivation solution result. All right, so if you are a tax account right what's the problem you have people that owe taxes to the IRS.
[00:21:34] You know they may get their ways gone as stuff like that and they have an issues that's the problem. The solution is J Jones tax accounting.
[00:21:43] Okay, I can help you with that problem the result is hey I can stop the wage garnish made from your paycheck.
[00:21:51] I can reduce the cost of what you have to pay the IRS. I can get them off your back. What does that mean to you? That means that number one I get more money in my paycheck because I'm not getting my wages going.
[00:22:05] Number two, I'm not embarrassed when I go to HR and people can see my wages going. Number three, my wife was spouse or partner is in pissed off because we hadn't got a tax returning years because it's all going to the taxes that I owe.
[00:22:21] Number four, whatever another benefit what else does that mean I can start saving more money now. I can take that money and use it to put my kids in college by new house or whatever. So it's problem solution result. What does it mean?
[00:22:36] And when you get to the what does it mean part that's when you're getting into the psyche of your audience. Because we can just say problem solution result but that doesn't tap into the psyche.
[00:22:47] It doesn't make somebody want to buy or purchase something. Okay, and that's why in addition to doing some of the things that you can do when things aren't working. This is another one too. This is the simplest form of making money problem solution result.
[00:23:04] Okay, so let me give you an example that was a service example right I'll give you a physical example when I've used this one before but bear with me this show is off the cuff right he's just me basically turning on the mic and getting at it.
[00:23:19] So if I sold a physical products and I'll stick with my my famous J Jones in souls what's the problem runners feet are hurting right they can't run the solution is the J Jones in soul what's the result obviously your feet won't hurt right but what does that mean to that runner.
[00:23:40] The first thing it could mean is that hey now they can run comfortably and you know run more and get better exercise number two if you're if you're in the racing you can start winning races number three because now these in souls help you and you're not uncomfortable running.
[00:23:58] You can get back in the shape what does that mean that means that you know I can lose weight what does that mean that means that I'll become healthier what does that mean that means that I can possibly live a longer life and you can keep asking what does that mean.
[00:24:13] What does that mean to the customer so the problem was my feet hurt when I run the solution was the J Jones in souls and the result was obviously my feet don't hurt.
[00:24:26] What does that mean I could run longer I can exercise more I could lose more weight I can do this do that whatever I can win the triathlon or whatever the five k so you have to dig deep into the psyche.
[00:24:38] Okay, so we did the tax account in one which was a service we just did the in souls which was a physical product okay and I'm going to give you another one.
[00:24:49] Another physical product because this actually has come up several times so for those of you that sell t-shirts or athletic wear clothing or whatever this is something important.
[00:25:00] Because you're not really solving quote unquote a problem per se unless you have something physical that your clothing does so you know there is shirts out there for men that are slim fit makes you look slimmer so that's the problem you saw the net okay you may have.
[00:25:18] Some type of clothing that's not real nice looking so could be industrial clothing so say you created a line of work work clothes that that look good on you okay they're a little more stylish but if you're just selling t-shirts hoodies and all that good stuff.
[00:25:35] You're going to have to come up with another idea right so for example with clothing brands per few other products that don't solve a problem you have to focus on several things the backstory the who what why and how what's the motivation to make somebody purchase your product.
[00:25:52] So and the other thing it was in the other example was problem solution result when you're selling something that's not really solving a problem it's going to be motivation solution result what is the motivation for me to buy this new athletic wear of clothing right so they all types of you know athletic wear out there why am I going to buy this one.
[00:26:14] And so what you have to do with the clothing clothing line sometimes you have to make it more than just the clothing who are you right who are you who are you that created this clothing line people want to know that right who's your target market.
[00:26:28] Why I created this clothing line j-jones and I created this clothing line for people that love to work out and that are athletes right.
[00:26:38] So what about your clothing brand makes it different or special.
[00:26:42] So what we focus on is the highest I'm making this up as we go what we focus on is having the highest performing material to help you increase your workout.
[00:26:52] Okay, why did you create it because I wanted it myself right now is your clothing brand associated or connected with a purpose or cause and that's something that you can help separate yourself.
[00:27:04] I had a couple of B.E.B family members that have clothing lines right and the lines and the stuff look good but unless you get some social media pop with something or some press it's going to really be hard to get some traction.
[00:27:17] So are you created or connected to a charity or purpose or cause you know do you donate a percentage of your sales to charity or whatever time shoes right you buy a pair of shoes and you know everybody is use this example and you donate a pair.
[00:27:33] Bombas socks all these different types of companies now one of the things that I always love was if you guys are familiar with St. Jude's children's hospital.
[00:27:43] So they actually have a fundraiser and they sell t-shirts and on the t-shirt it says this t-shirt saves lives which is cool because when you buy the t-shirt the money goes to St. Jude's children's hospital.
[00:27:58] And so sometimes when you sell things that aren't problem solving products or services you have to get to get into the psyche of the customer and let them know who you are and I know a lot of times we don't want to be out front.
[00:28:13] But sometimes we're going to have to who you are right who's your target customer you know what makes your product a service different you know why did you create it is your clothing brand associated with any type of.
[00:28:28] Foundational connected to a purpose or calls and do you donate any money based on yourselves how are you going to connect with that audience.
[00:28:36] What's going to make you stand out so if you have a black a leisure line or you know athletic way of life.
[00:28:45] You could connect that to a cause right you could connect that to whatever you know you want to and would also make sure you set such a self apart positioning okay.
[00:28:58] And so what I'm going to say is if you the the creator go and talk about it why you did it sometimes people will buy things just because they like you so for example.
[00:29:08] I'm sure you guys have heard of tally and twine watch company one of the largest black on watch companies out there I didn't interview with the owner Randy Williams.
[00:29:18] Randy is a good brother and what he talked about on the episode was where the concept came from.
[00:29:24] And tally and twine is are actually two intersecting streets I believe it's in rich not rich we're fortunate or north of Virginia I'm not sure a randy of our apologize I can't remember and that area.
[00:29:39] Back in the day was a low income kind of light at area and the reason that he decided to call tally and twine is because they actually.
[00:29:47] We did the area and it was like a new generation of rebirth so that's where the name tally and twine came from and on his watch is the only number that you see is the number seven and he said that seven obviously if you're into the Bible that's the number of completion.
[00:30:05] God completed the world in seven days right so the number seven so that is the concept that's the story behind the brand behind the product and so if you go to tally and twine and you read about them.
[00:30:20] And it definitely supported them did great products that's what it's about now Randy's not solving a problem with tally and twine but what he's doing is he's giving you a glimpse into who he is as a person what his concept was with the watch brand.
[00:30:35] And where it came from and who in the market that he serves and it's funny because.
[00:30:42] He doesn't say we're black on watch company but he mentioned any interview that he'd never really seen models with in watch company ads that were black.
[00:30:54] And so without necessarily going out and saying it a lot of the ads or most of the ads I haven't seen any other ethnicity in it.
[00:31:03] Aware Italian twine okay and so that is the concept that's how you market a product or service that doesn't necessarily solve a problem now of course most people have watches but you got millions of different options and watches right.
[00:31:19] But he actually shared his experience in his journey and he started out with crowdfunding.
[00:31:25] And this was years ago and so when he did his crowdfunding people understood oh man this is his young brother start no black watch company we got to support that so that's how he galvanized okay so if you're selling.
[00:31:37] You know clothing or things like that you may even want to talk about crowdfunding or or start your base like that because that way.
[00:31:47] You have to tell your story why you need the money the reason that you're starting your brand and you know what is it about what do you support right.
[00:31:57] What do you stand for and so these are some of the things that you can do guys when things aren't working for you they're not going well evaluate your product a service evaluate your position.
[00:32:07] You're not going to be able to continue to test systematically be a mad scientist and then basically look at the problem solution result equation.
[00:32:17] What's the problem my product of services the solution these are the results if you use my product or service and then you dig deep what does it mean to the customer.
[00:32:29] Oh you're going to save money great what does that mean that means you'll be able to afford a college tuition for your kids.
[00:32:38] Great what does that mean that means my kids will have a better start than I have what does that mean but bought but buy and you keep asking.
[00:32:46] What does that mean it to you can't go any more and once you identify what that truly means to your customer.
[00:32:53] These are the points that you hone in on in your marketing right these other points because what's your selling guys you're not selling a product of service in most cases just selling transformation.
[00:33:06] I'm transforming you from point A to point B so that example with as a tax account right now you are a point A you owe to IRS fifty thousand dollars and you jacked up.
[00:33:21] One of my selling tax services or IS IRS tax services what I'm selling you is peace of mind.
[00:33:28] I'm going to get that tax lien off I'm going to stop the garnish mint on your paycheck I'm going to have more money coming to your pocket and now you'll be able to do this what does that mean.
[00:33:40] What does that mean and so on and so forth so you're really selling transformation and if you're not solving a problem you have to create the motivation.
[00:33:49] For somebody to buy your watch brand to buy your t-shirts to buy your hoodies whatever whatever you're selling your perfume your puzzles whatever you're selling.
[00:34:00] And a lot of times that made me for you to be the face of the product or the service you're selling but when it comes to things that don't solve problems sometimes you have to go a little bit deeper.
[00:34:11] So for example proactive right so that's the stuff that kids use you know if they have acne.
[00:34:19] We don't know who started proactive right but what we do know is that they sold a ton of proactive bottles and the reason was they didn't care who created it it solved the problem.
[00:34:31] So that's what you have to look at guys and hopefully this helps you out this is an impromptu topic.
[00:34:38] I had another topic ready to go but I thought this was super important and impactful because I know there's a lot of entrepreneurs out there that things aren't working out the way you want them to work and I just wanted to give you a few tips on that.

[00:37:12] bened done that as i mentioned at the beginning of the show but stay positive keep pushing forward and it's going to crack it's going to break if you put enough pressure on it a lot of times like i said we're not as committed as we need to be so entrepreneurship is not a sport guys
[00:37:31] it's not a sport it's a profession and you have to understand and treat it like a profession you're going to get out of it what you what you put into it so make sure guys that you evaluate your product or service you evaluate your positioning
[00:37:46] continue to test your products and services act you know testing systematically your mad scientist right and find out what's working and then you scale it up
[00:37:56] but you have to have processes to be successful as an entrepreneur so the things that i just told you right now you can take those same steps or processes and if you're diligent.
[00:38:08] if you if you do split testing if you try things and take your time and work from a perspective of a scientist deductive reasoning hey this doesn't work let me tweak it and try this and you have to have patients.
[00:38:22] and commitment and if you're able to do that and you can create that that formula you'll be able to use that formula with anything any business any product any service but you have to be able to find and create that winning formula.
