The story of the first Christmas is packed full of individuals having Divine Encounters!
Elisa Morgan shares from her brand new book, "Christmas Changes Everything," some of these divine encounters. Elisa and Ken then discuss what the meaning of these encounters is for us or what is our Christmas Encounter.

00:00:01
Eliza you have Christmas changes everything.
00:00:04
I'm very interested in this book because it's close to the
00:00:07
holidays. I love Christmas and such But
00:00:12
also each character in The Christmas Story is had to find
00:00:16
Encounters of their own. Yeah.
00:00:19
Can you tell us about some of those?
00:00:21
Yeah, I'm I actually call them the nine, you know it.
00:00:25
When you look in the Bible in the gospels, specifically, which
00:00:28
is Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, you look in there and you'll
00:00:31
find nine people who had an encounter with Jesus.
00:00:35
And, and it's the actually, in the first Christmas, if you
00:00:38
will, your movie, we named Christmas christ Mass after
00:00:41
after the mass that happens about Christ.
00:00:44
And we kind of arbitrarily set the date of Christmas as being
00:00:48
his birthday. But anywho when you read about
00:00:51
the birth of Christ, the birth of Jesus in scripture, you run
00:00:55
across nine people. And each one of them had a
00:00:58
stunning, shocking bizarre. Life-changing experience and
00:01:05
their encounter with a baby baby, which is a miracle in
00:01:12
itself, it's a miracle. The first one that we think of
00:01:16
is Mary, of course his mother. She's probably the best-known
00:01:21
woman in the history of our planet, you know, Mary the
00:01:24
mother of Jesus real real person and I think it's mainly the
00:01:29
Gospel of Luke who tells us about her encounter, Enter that
00:01:33
she was a very young girl, probably age 12 or so right at
00:01:37
puberty in New Testament times. She was a virgin and betrothed
00:01:43
and betrothal was the first part of the whole marriage
00:01:47
relationship, bride, and groom would be betrothed for a year
00:01:51
live apart, not consummate their marriage, then after a year,
00:01:56
they would have a ceremony and after the ceremony, they would
00:02:00
live together and consummate their marriage.
00:02:01
So, this is The early part of this whole process and Mary's
00:02:06
June, 12 year old girls and our nativity scenes at church.
00:02:09
It would be scandalous, it would be, and it is in our minds, you
00:02:13
know, in our culture today, it's shocking.
00:02:16
But in terms of the economic Times and the traditional times
00:02:20
the cultural times of New Testament times, it was
00:02:23
necessary Joseph was probably around 18 and Mary was from an
00:02:28
agrarian societies peasant, kind of Lifestyle, but anywho Ooh,
00:02:33
she's just doing her life. When no kidding.
00:02:36
The way Luke describes it in this blows my mind.
00:02:40
Most Scholars think that Luke was actually taking his words
00:02:45
that he wrote down in the gospel from Mary's version of the story
00:02:49
that Mary was his Source. She lived long after Jesus lived
00:02:52
and Luke was a historian who wrote down the story of Jesus
00:02:55
and his gospel. So anyway, she's the one who
00:02:58
told him what happened. So she's meeting her business
00:03:00
and boom. An angel appears to her calls.
00:03:02
Most favored one says you're going to conceive a baby by the
00:03:07
Holy Spirit and Mary is I love when you read this in Luke
00:03:12
chapter 1, you're going to see she responds.
00:03:15
How can this be since I am a virgin?
00:03:17
There's not an ounce of doubt in that question.
00:03:20
It's wonder and curiosity how in the world is not?
00:03:24
If it's going to happen houses, going to happen.
00:03:26
I'm sorry what? Yeah, not.
00:03:28
If this can happen. How is it going out?
00:03:29
How's it going to happen? And the angel says, you know, it
00:03:32
It's God's going to overshadow, you and that word overshadow is
00:03:36
the same word that's used of the Transfiguration in Luke chapter
00:03:39
9, where Jesus was transfigured into his Heavenly reality.
00:03:43
So talk about Divine encounters. I mean these are crazy ones.
00:03:47
Yeah. And a little side note for
00:03:49
people, if I was an adult till I realized what Ave Maria men,
00:03:54
It's beautiful in the song is it was its Greenhouse, right?
00:03:57
Yeah, yeah. Tell me about it.
00:04:01
Oh what? Yeah, it's all I know.
00:04:03
Ave Maria. Greetings, marry the words of
00:04:06
Gabriel to Mary, isn't it crazy so much of our culture today,
00:04:11
has you know, these nine characters just woven into?
00:04:15
And we don't even notice, we don't even notice anyway.
00:04:19
Then you go to Joseph who was her counterpart.
00:04:22
And he thinks when the angel appears to Another Divine
00:04:25
encounter, he thinks oh my goodness.
00:04:27
My bride-to-be has been unfaithful because he knows he
00:04:29
hasn't had sex with her. And in both these situations,
00:04:33
the Angels, the word consummate shall we do, okay?
00:04:36
Consummate choking, I don't care.
00:04:40
Okay, so in both these situations, the angel is
00:04:44
informing them as to how this is going to happen.
00:04:48
But before the angel does that Gabriel does that he Comforts
00:04:52
them. Don't be afraid because our
00:04:54
bottom line response to the Divine is a kind of a holy
00:04:58
Terror, we experience. God is so other than us and so
00:05:02
if we're going to see an angel we're afraid and if you're
00:05:05
afraid you can't really hear anything that's being
00:05:08
communicated. So the angel communicates to
00:05:11
both of them, don't be afraid and then he unpacks, what's
00:05:14
going to happen to Joseph and you know Christmas changed Mary
00:05:17
from being a stunned virgin into being the mother of God and it
00:05:21
changed Joseph from being a kind of devastated, groom thinking
00:05:24
his bride-to-be was unfaithful and to being the stepfather of
00:05:27
Jesus, we can go on from there but that's just the first two of
00:05:32
the nine. Yeah.
00:05:34
Can I randomly pick some sure? Yeah, you know who I've always
00:05:38
been interested, well, not that I'm not interested in one of
00:05:41
them but is there's always got to be a perfectly wonderful, bad
00:05:46
guy. Yeah.
00:05:50
You know in history you know these are historical figures.
00:05:52
I don't people realize that they're not just mythological
00:05:55
nativities. It's came from somewhere and
00:05:58
even outside scripture and outside of scripture hair, it is
00:06:01
known as Herod the Great. Yeah, from his great buildings
00:06:06
which is how you left your legacy.
00:06:08
You know, you did a lot to. Yeah, I mean he was very
00:06:11
ambitious, his he had no moral code and whatever.
00:06:15
But that guy fascinates me. But nobody would want to model
00:06:20
after. But what can you say about, how
00:06:22
does he fit in mr. Kind of, like, bad guy into a
00:06:26
Divine encounter. Yeah, it's surprising.
00:06:28
That I include Herod in the list, but he is one who had a
00:06:32
divine revelation, if you will, and encounter.
00:06:35
And he's the kind of person who he actually couldn't make room
00:06:40
for the Divine, because he thought he was divine, that
00:06:43
makes sense. Yeah, he heard that the Magi oar
00:06:48
We call them the wise men, but they were, they were those who
00:06:52
sought after Celestial Insight. They were wise.
00:06:57
They were astrologers some thought, they studied the
00:07:01
heavens and they had seen the star, a literal star and we just
00:07:06
saw the Christmas story a few years ago on in North America.
00:07:09
We were floored by the coming together of these Celestial
00:07:12
lights and they saw a star that was at another Divine moment.
00:07:18
And they travel to it and Herod heard about them and had them
00:07:22
intercepted. And he asked them, he pretended
00:07:25
like he too. Wanted to find the Christ child,
00:07:28
the one who would be king of the Jews is what the Messiah was to
00:07:32
be and he wanted them to go find him and come back and tell them
00:07:35
about it. But the reality is that Herod
00:07:37
thought he was the king of the Jews.
00:07:39
He touted himself that way, but he couldn't have been, he didn't
00:07:45
come from the prophesied city's, he Wasn't a follower of the law
00:07:51
of Judaism honestly. And this is kind of shocking.
00:07:56
Can he was deranged, he really was.
00:07:59
He killed his wife. He killed many other people in
00:08:02
his family and so the wise, mon son that he drowned his own son.
00:08:08
Yes. And it's tragic to here to
00:08:11
really research who he was, but he was so threatened by the
00:08:16
possibility of a baby. Being born and then growing up
00:08:20
to take over. What Herod saw is his kingship
00:08:23
that when the wise men, the Magi refused to go back through
00:08:27
Jerusalem where he was, he, he just then decided he would kill
00:08:32
all of the newborn male babies, under the age of two, to make
00:08:37
sure that he handled it, and, and Joseph and Mary, were warned
00:08:40
in a Dream by the Divine Again by God and fled to Egypt
00:08:46
actually history. Tells us that Herod probably
00:08:49
killed about 20 boys, which doesn't sound like a lot until
00:08:53
you think about 20 babies and one is a lot.
00:08:56
So it's awful and and then he himself because he refused to
00:09:00
learn. It's stunning at the way he
00:09:02
died. He died himself, he took ill and
00:09:06
he was this body was eaten with worms is what Luke tells us.
00:09:10
It's very graphic and very horrific but the lesson to take
00:09:14
away. For me, is God prevents a lot
00:09:19
provides, a lot of opportunities for me to learn every year,
00:09:22
every Christmas and every day, the year that's not Christmas.
00:09:25
And you know, his encounters are not to punish me, not to rub my
00:09:29
nose in my mistakes, but to woo me toward his love.
00:09:34
I have day after day to learn, how to receive that love to
00:09:39
learn, how to let God's love. Be my motivation in life to
00:09:44
learn how to embrace. Race.
00:09:47
His gift of Jesus that he gave so that I can Embrace his love
00:09:51
and Herod. Bless his heart, couldn't do it.
00:09:54
And I look at that example, and I think, well, that's what
00:09:56
happens when you refuse the gift of love you do.
00:10:00
And I don't want to be like that.
00:10:02
No. And he had the potential to be
00:10:05
here at the great. I think.
00:10:06
And I mean, he believed enough which most people in Antiquity,
00:10:09
did they believed in the star movements and spiritual World in
00:10:13
this and that to have believed the man, Chai, which comes from
00:10:17
the word magician or vice versa, right?
00:10:19
Right. Yeah.
00:10:21
To that, there. There was if he just dismissed
00:10:25
it all together and it's all nonsense, he wouldn't be killing
00:10:28
babies over it. Exactly.
00:10:30
He believes something enough that this child has to be
00:10:32
killed, so I can be king of the Jews.
00:10:35
But then, you know, you're struggling against God's plan
00:10:38
and ultimately, you know what, for you're going to die, whether
00:10:41
it's terrifically like him at some point.
00:10:43
Anyway, but what if you just gave Gave in and you know the
00:10:47
best leaders are followers. If you could have followed the
00:10:50
lead of God how great he could have been maybe, how long he
00:10:55
could have lived and he had been Herod the Great other than just
00:10:58
like some aqueducts and mansions and swimming pools or whatever.
00:11:03
Yeah, which means nothing a different Legacy for sure.
00:11:06
And I think you know it's a natural thing for humans to fear
00:11:10
the Divine and When We Fear the divine, In an unhealthy way that
00:11:18
the Divine is out to get us, the Divine is going to strip from
00:11:22
us, what we depend upon, you know what?
00:11:26
When we go kind of wacky that way, we go towards the dark and
00:11:30
the dark is powerful as well and kind of looks like that overtook
00:11:35
hair it in a way that he couldn't find his way back from,
00:11:39
but I'm so comforted because in almost every single interaction
00:11:44
that we see with these nine, Who had a Divine encounter with the
00:11:47
first Christmas? The first, the first message
00:11:51
that they're given is don't be afraid.
00:11:54
So if you're having an encounter with a Divine, the real Divine,
00:11:58
God, Divine that's going to be his message to you.
00:12:01
Is don't be afraid. I am for good, I am for your
00:12:05
good. I am for the good of all people.
00:12:07
I am love. I give my son as a sacrifice for
00:12:11
you so that you can be freed from what is bad and what is
00:12:14
wrong. And what is Upton.
00:12:16
Our world. I'm the way out of it.
00:12:21
This one. I don't know if it's saving the
00:12:24
best for last, but I don't want to say it's obvious.
00:12:28
You don't want to seem too much, but what about the baby?
00:12:32
That's actually number 10, right?
00:12:35
Number 10 is us. Okay?
00:12:38
Right, our divine encounter, I mean the baby is Jesus and, you
00:12:43
know, it's impossible for us to understand how well, we in
00:12:47
Christianity, we celebrate celebrate, what we call a Triune
00:12:51
God, Scripture never use. Has the word Trinity, but it
00:12:55
does talk about God, the Father, the Creator.
00:12:57
God the son, Jesus and God the Holy Spirit, the one who guides
00:13:02
us and leads us. So when we think about the
00:13:06
entity of God, all of God, squishing himself into a baby in
00:13:12
a woman's womb. And then being born and having
00:13:16
the hands of a human and the feet of a human and the body of
00:13:19
a human and the emotions of a human and The Temptations of
00:13:21
human except ra. And yet still In God, we just
00:13:25
our minds. Just you cannot comprehend.
00:13:29
I'm helped by what the Apostle Paul wrote in his letter to the
00:13:33
Philippians Church in the first century where he talks about
00:13:38
Jesus laying aside, his Godly attributes and taking the humble
00:13:43
form of a man that helps me a little bit psyche.
00:13:47
Held back, you know, he's performed Miracles.
00:13:50
He was transfigured, he did die. Hi, and then rise from the dead
00:13:55
and ascended into heaven. But in his Earthly Ministry in
00:14:00
his coming to her than being born as a baby, what a humble
00:14:04
act, what a way of connecting with us.
00:14:09
Most of us, you know, when we become parents and we look at
00:14:12
the Christmas story, we look at Mary and Joseph we're just our
00:14:15
Jaws dropped to the floor going. How could you carry?
00:14:20
The Son of God in your room. How could you step?
00:14:23
Parent the Son of God we're blown away in a whole different
00:14:27
way that encounter with any baby and then you think about Jesus
00:14:33
the baby, then Jesus the child and Jesus the teenager in Jesus,
00:14:37
the young man. Well it's a lot to take in and
00:14:40
comprehend and yet, God wanted us to know that he identified
00:14:43
with us. So closely that he truly does
00:14:45
understand who we are and what we go through and what I need is
00:14:49
for help. Yeah, I was 27 when I had my
00:14:53
first child and I was terrified thinking.
00:14:56
I'm not going to know how to hold it properly.
00:14:57
Keep it air support. I'm not gonna know how to bathe
00:14:59
this thing. Yeah, it was a full-grown man.
00:15:02
I can't imagine being 12 years old learning who's coming and I
00:15:09
just can't imagine. And yet, can you think to about
00:15:12
Gabriel himself? This Angel is Messenger from,
00:15:15
God is the one who told Mary that, and he says the holy
00:15:18
spirit's going to overshadow you.
00:15:20
And Mary was a devout follower of God.
00:15:22
I just think, you know, she probably looked back over and
00:15:25
over at that Divine encounter. And thought I'm not alone, I'm
00:15:29
not alone. I'm not alone.
00:15:31
You know? Just as he helped me, have this
00:15:35
baby come inside me. He also helped me birth this
00:15:37
baby, and he's going to help me feed this baby, and he's going
00:15:39
to help me grow this baby out. Yeah.
00:15:44
And for anyone listening that this is a question to you.
00:15:49
There's people listening that you know, that's interesting and
00:15:52
they're learning more about the characters and the Nativity and
00:15:55
such in their Divine encounters and how God worked back
00:15:59
thousands of years ago you can they may believe it or not it's
00:16:04
easier to believe something from thousands of years ago, it
00:16:06
always seems more true for some reason and But how does it
00:16:14
relate to our lives today? Leaning towards all of this, of
00:16:22
those Divine encounters were really for us after.
00:16:26
It wasn't just for a pretty nativity scene.
00:16:29
Yeah, you know, can I, I live in a broken world, and you do too.
00:16:35
You know, it's broken by all kinds of stuff.
00:16:37
I grew up in a broken, family, through divorce and addiction
00:16:40
and a bunch of other stuff. And I, as I had kids, I
00:16:43
realized, Yep, they're broken to it.
00:16:46
We're all, we are in need, we have struggles, we live in a
00:16:51
world that's confusing and fights with each other.
00:16:53
And it's like, we just choose away from what's healthy so much
00:16:58
of the time. And, you know it, when you read
00:17:01
the story of scripture from the beginning to the end, you'll see
00:17:04
that you know pretty much after God.
00:17:06
Created the first family, it fell and broke and chose against
00:17:10
what was healthy and You know, Christians call that sin, but
00:17:13
it's, you know, it's choosing against what's healthy and
00:17:15
what's good for us all in a way back.
00:17:18
Then, God began to put a plan in place to give us a way out so
00:17:22
that it's not just death. We have to look forward to but
00:17:25
we can look forward to being in a relationship with help all
00:17:28
through our lives. And then living beyond the
00:17:32
grave. And and that's what I think the
00:17:34
real message of Christmas is about.
00:17:36
For me Christmas became Christmas.
00:17:39
I really understood a baby born. Born, when Easter became Easter
00:17:44
when I understood that, that baby grew up and died on a cross
00:17:47
and it was raised again, something no other religion
00:17:50
celebrates, no other religion does.
00:17:53
And that, he sits at the right hand of our God, he provides
00:17:57
daily wisdom. We can all have Divine
00:18:00
encounters with him 24/7. We can, that's the kind of guy
00:18:03
he is. And so for me, Christmas
00:18:06
changes, everything. When I invite the real Jesus,
00:18:11
who is living Seeing right now and his Spirit to live inside me
00:18:16
when I welcomed him into live inside me and I make my home in
00:18:19
him, I don't have to do life alone and I don't have to give
00:18:22
up and give over to the Brokenness around me.
00:18:25
I can have peace and I can have hope and I can make sense of
00:18:29
what doesn't make sense as I hold it Loosely as my father,
00:18:33
god holds it with me. So your book ends with an
00:18:41
afterword Christmas isn't over. What's that mean?
00:18:46
We don't have to put Christmas back in the box.
00:18:48
We do. We pack it up and push it up to
00:18:50
the attic or down to the basement or in the storage
00:18:52
closet or in the garage or wherever we keep it.
00:18:55

00:19:01
gives us every day and we don't have to do anything, but just
00:19:03
celebrate that every day. Christmas is every day.
