Jacqui: Greetings listeners.
00:00:14
Today marks the beginning of an exciting new four-part series
00:00:21
on the " Living by the Book Bible Study Method inspired by
00:00:26
Dr Howard Hendricks' transformative book by that same
00:00:30
name.
00:00:31
For those of you who tuned into our previous episode, you'll
00:00:35
remember Brother Terrence Brown's inspiring interview
00:00:40
where he recommended this very approach.
00:00:42
Now you might be saying I listen to sermons and
00:00:47
participate in Bible study classes regularly.
00:00:50
Why do I need to learn how to do Bible study?
00:00:54
Well, stay tuned for part one of this series where we'll
00:01:00
respond to that question.
00:01:01
Whether you're a lifelong Christian or new to the faith,
00:01:07
this series is for you.
00:01:09
Well, welcome everyone.
00:01:12
I'm your host, Jacqui Adewole, and this is the Bible Basics
00:01:17
Podcast where, weekly, we break down the Bible into
00:01:21
understandable, bite-sized chunks.
00:01:24
Sermons and Bible classes are essential to our growth, but
00:01:33
we're living in a time when we can explore the depths and
00:01:35
riches of the Bible on our own, without waiting for someone else
00:01:39
to feed us.
00:01:40
We can fish for ourselves, and there are many benefits to doing
00:01:47
just that, to studying on our own.
00:01:50
Here are my top five.
00:01:53
Number five study the Bible to renew our minds and be
00:02:00
transformed.
00:02:01
Romans 12: 2 urges us do not be conformed to this world but be
00:02:08
transformed by the renewal of your mind that by testing, you
00:02:13
may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable
00:02:17
and perfect.
00:02:19
Regular Bible study renews our minds.
00:02:20
Regular Bible study renews our minds, aligning our thoughts
00:02:25
with God's truths leading to transformation in our attitudes
00:02:29
and behaviors.
00:02:30
The more we soak in Scripture, the more we'll be transformed.
00:02:41
Number four study the Bible for spiritual growth and maturity.
00:02:46
Studying the Bible on our own is like planting seeds in our
00:02:50
spiritual garden.
00:02:51
Each time we read, reflect, study and meditate on Scripture,
00:02:57
we're nourishing our faith, allowing it to grow and flourish
00:03:02
.
00:03:02
Hebrews 5:14 says but solid food is for the mature who, by
00:03:10
constant use, have trained themselves to distinguish good
00:03:14
from evil.
00:03:15
Likewise, P peter in 1 Peter 2:2 uses an analogy of milk to
00:03:21
describe how the Bible will nourish us and grow us.
00:03:25
As believers, Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual
00:03:31
milk so that by it you may grow up in your salvation.
00:03:36
We should long for that sustenance so we can grow
00:03:41
spiritually.
00:03:42
Number three study the Bible to gain discernment.
00:03:49
In a world filled with conflicting messages and values,
00:03:55
discernment is critical.
00:03:57
We need to be able to determine what is right and what is wrong
00:04:03
in any situation.
00:04:04
Hebrews 4:12 states For the word of God is alive and active.
00:04:12
Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to
00:04:18
dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow.
00:04:23
It judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
00:04:27
Studying the Bible equips us to distinguish between truth and
00:04:42
falsehood, guiding our decisions and actions.
00:04:44
Number two study the Bible to understand salvation.
00:04:48
The Bible is our primary source for understanding God's plan of
00:04:53
salvation through Jesus Christ.
00:04:55
John 3:16 in the New King James Version tells us For God so
00:05:02
loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whoever
00:05:06
believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life
00:05:11
.
00:05:11
By studying scripture, we grasp the depth of God's love and the
00:05:18
sacrifice of Jesus, which strengthens our faith and
00:05:22
assurance of salvation.
00:05:24
Of salvation and the number one reason why we should be
00:05:36
studying the Bible.
00:05:37
Study the Bible to know God.
00:05:37
Think about any meaningful relationship in your life.
00:05:40
It requires time, effort and communication.
00:05:45
Our relationship with God is no different.
00:05:50
When we study the Bible on our own, we're essentially having a
00:05:55
one-on-one conversation with God .
00:05:58
It's our opportunity to hear his voice directly, without any
00:06:04
go-betweens.
00:06:05
Jeremiah 29: 13 promises you will seek me and find me when
00:06:14
you seek me with all your heart.
00:06:16
Isn't that incredible?
00:06:19
God himself promises to reveal his presence to us when we
00:06:25
earnestly seek him.
00:06:27
This personal study becomes an intimate journey where God's
00:06:33
words can directly influence our hearts and minds.
00:06:38
Well, now that you heard my top five reasons for studying the
00:06:45
Bible, let me share this one last verse with you, C olossians
00:06:50
3.16 3:16 Here Paul prays let the message of Christ dwell
00:06:59
among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with
00:07:05
all wisdom through psalms, hymns and songs from the Spirit
00:07:11
singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.
00:07:15
This verse encourages us to let Christ's teachings live in our
00:07:23
hearts and minds so richly that they flow from us to build up
00:07:28
others in beautiful ways.
00:07:30
This is what happens when we read and study the Bible for
00:07:35
ourselves.
00:07:35
But you also might be thinking I'm just a beginner.
00:07:41
I don't have any real experience studying the Bible.
00:07:45
But that's okay.
00:07:47
We just need to work at it gradually and then you'll
00:07:53
understand and retain more.
00:07:55
Now are you excited and ready to jump into Bible study for
00:08:01
yourself?
00:08:01
I know I sure am.
00:08:04
Join us for the next three episodes where we'll delve into
00:08:09
the living by the book Bible study method.
00:08:12
This method breaks down Bible study into three simple,
00:08:17
actionable steps Observation.
00:08:20
Step two, interpretation, and step three, application.
00:08:25
We'll explore that first step observation in the next episode.
00:08:31
So you see, studying the Bible on our own will strengthen and
00:08:37
enhance our relationship with God.
00:08:40
We'll better understand our salvation and be able to share
00:08:44
it with others.
00:08:45
Our decision-making won't be based on fear or societal
00:08:49
pressures, but on His truth and guidance.
00:08:52
It also helps us develop discernment and wisdom.
00:08:56
We can face life's challenges with spiritual maturity and
00:09:01
transformed minds Together.
00:09:05
Let's go deeper into this technique that will transform
00:09:09
our personal Bible study experience.
