Building Each Other Up

What if building someone up doesn't always mean making things easier for them?

We love the idea of encouraging one another.

But sometimes, when someone we care about is struggling, our first instinct is to fix the problem.

Remove the obstacle.

Take away the discomfort.

Make everything better as quickly as possible.

And while those intentions often come from love, Jess reminds us that encouraging someone and rescuing them aren't always the same thing.

Sometimes building someone up means offering encouragement while they work through something difficult.

Sometimes it means speaking truth when it would be easier to stay quiet.

And sometimes it means setting aside what we want in the moment to consider what will actually help them grow.

Scripture calls us to encourage one another and build each other up (1 Thessalonians 5:11).

Maybe the question isn't just, "How can I help?"

Maybe it's, "What does this person need in order to grow?"

That's a different kind of encouragement. And it's one worth practicing. 💛
