What Does It Mean to Serve?
When most people think of “serving,” they picture someone handing out meals, or volunteering at church. And while those are forms of serving, the Bible shows us that true service is much deeper — it’s a posture of the heart, not just actions.
Jesus is our ultimate example. While he could have come with a royal entourage demanding luxury, he didn’t ; He came with a towel, kneeling to wash dirty feet. He fed the hungry, healed the sick, comforted the hurting, and laid down His life for the undeserving — for us.
Serving isn’t always glamorous. It’s often inconvenient, unnoticed, and sacrificial. But it’s in those quiet moments — praying for someone in secret, lending your ear to a friend in pain, or showing kindness when it’s not returned — that we mirror the heart of Christ.
The Bible tells us:
Serve God with all our heart
Joshua 22:5
But be very careful to keep the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you: to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to keep his commands, to hold fast to him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul
Serve others humbly in love
Galatians 5:13
You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh[a]; rather, serve one another humbly in love.
Use our God-given gifts to serve
1 Peter 4:10
Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.
When we serve others, we’re actually serving Jesus Himself .
Matthew 25:40
“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
Serving is not about getting applause or recognition. It's about reflecting God’s love in the way we treat people. It’s living in such a way that people see Him through our actions.
Mark 10:45
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
In essence, biblical service is a holistic practice rooted in a relationship with God, characterized by a humble and loving heart that seeks to meet the needs of others. It is a powerful way to glorify God and live out their faith.
Let’s Pray: Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You for sending Jesus, the perfect example of what it means to serve. Help me to serve You with all my heart and to love others humbly in action, not just in words. Give me eyes to see the needs around me and the willingness to respond, even when it costs me something. Let my service reflect Your love so others may be drawn to You. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
