Trust God to Be the Fixer

Have you ever been in a situation where someone needed help, and you felt powerless to do anything about it? Maybe a family member was facing a financial crisis, and though you wished you could, but you simply didn’t have the resources to step in. Perhaps a friend called you in distress pouring out their problems and all you could do was listen. The weight of wanting to help but not being able to help can feel overwhelming.

Martha knew this feeling all too well. In John 11 Lazarus (her brother) was deathly sick. She and her sister Mary sent word to Jesus, expecting Him to come right away but He didn’t show up immediately. When Lazarus died, Martha was heartbroken. She had done everything she could but it wasn’t enough.

When Jesus finally arrived, Martha said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died” (John 11:21). She believed Jesus could have fixed it—if only He had come sooner. But Jesus had a greater plan. He wasn’t just going to heal Lazarus—He was going to resurrect him.

Like Martha, we often feel responsible for fixing things. And when we can’t, we feel like we’ve failed and may have feelings of guilt. But instead of trying to carry the weight ourselves, we need to know and trust that God is working (even when it doesn’t look the way we expect).

Isaiah 55:8

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord.

Let Go of the Burden

Jesus invites us to release our burdens to Him:

Matthew 11:28-30

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

When we take on the role of "fixer," we carry burdens that we were never meant to bear. The truth is, God is the one who holds all things together (not us).

Colossians 1:17

He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

God is the Provider

Sometimes, our struggle comes from feeling like we have to be the one to provide. But Scripture reminds us:

Philippians 4:19

"And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus."

God doesn’t call us to be the source. He calls us to trust that He is the source. If we don’t have the ability to help, that doesn’t mean help won’t come. It simply means that God may provide in a way we don’t expect.

Release the Guilt

One of the biggest traps of the "fixer" mindset is guilt. When we can’t solve a problem, we feel like we’ve failed. But Romans 8:1 gives us reassurance:

"Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."

If God isn’t condemning us, don't condemn yourself? We are not responsible for fixing everything, God is in his own time and way.

Surrender to His Plan

Instead of exhausting yourself trying to solve every issue, trust in God’s plan:

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Sometimes, not being able to fix a situation is God’s way of reminding us that He is in control. What feels like failure is actually an opportunity to trust Him more deeply.

Cast Your Cares on Him

The next time you find yourself in a situation where you can’t fix things, instead of feeling defeated, pray and release it to God.

Psalm 55:22

Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.

God sees your heart. He knows your desire to help. But He never asked you to be the fixer—He asks you to trust Him to be the Fixer.

Let's pray. Dear Heavenly Father, I trust that You are in control and that You will provide in ways I can’t. Help me to release the burdens I was never meant to carry and rest in Your peace. Thank you for your grace. In Jesus' precious name, Amen.
