Moving from Transactional to Relational Faith
I recently saw a special about The Biggest Loser. They interviewed past winners in a “where are they now” type update. Many had lost over 100 pounds in just six months. They had access to trainers, nutritionists, and learned all the benefits of living healthier. Afterward, they said they had more energy, felt better, and even had a new outlook on life.
But after the show many of them gained the weight back and some were even heavier than when they originally started the show Why? Because bad habits, when normalized over a lifetime, can quietly creep back in. Even after all the progress training and knowledge some still slipped back into their old ways.
That same danger exists with us in our Christian walk. You can experience salvation, freedom, joy, and a new life in Christ—but if you aren’t intentional, old habits and routines will creep back in. Life pressures, distractions and the world will try to pull you back. The question is: How do you stay motivated and on fire for the Lord?
Here are 6 ways to build and maintain a relational faith with Jesus:
1. Never Stop Seeking Him
Our relationship with Jesus can always alive and growing. Similar to a friendship, communication matters. Keep pursuing Him daily through prayer, worship, and the Word.
You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13
2. Focus on Transformation, Not Just Information
Don’t just collect Bible verses—let them change you. Knowledge without application can lead back to old patterns. Real transformation happens when we allow the Holy Spirit to renew our minds.
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will
Romans 12:2
3. Stay Connected to Community
You can’t do this walk alone. Surround yourself with other believers who will pray with you, encourage you, and hold you accountable.
And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Hebrews 10:24
4. Guard Against Spiritual Drift
Just like some of The Biggest Loser winners/ contestants slipped back into unhealthy habits, you can drift if you aren’t alert. Be intentional about guarding your heart and routines.
We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.” Hebrews 2:1
5. Keep Your First Love Alive
Think back to when you first came to Christ—, the passion, excitement and gratitude. Don’t lose it. Fan the flame daily and return to Him if you’ve grown cold.
Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.” Revelation 2:4
6. Never Stop Being Intentional
Spiritual growth doesn’t happen by accident, it’s a daily choice. Just like staying physically healthy requires consistent effort, staying spiritually healthy means choosing Jesus again and again. Be intentional about your time, habits, and priorities.
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:33
Relational faith is about more than what Jesus can do for you, it’s about walking with Him daily, intentionally, and faithfully.
Let’s Pray: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for calling me into a relationship with You. Help me to never drift back into old ways, but to stay intentional, consistent, and on fire for You. Keep me grounded in Your Word, surrounded by Your people, and motivated by Your love. Strengthen me to live each day relationally, not transactionally. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
