Transactional vs. Relational Faith: Part 1
What Kind of Relationship Do You Have With Jesus?
Sometimes the Christian life can get so routine. You start off with good intentions—praying regularly, studying the Word, maybe even serving in some capacity—but somewhere along the line, you lose the fire you once had. The enthusiasm fades, and before you know it you’re just going through the motions.
It’s like making a New Year’s resolution. In January, you’re motivated and on fire. By March, the excitement fades, and you slip back into old habits.
Spiritually, this is when your faith can become transactional (you might be the only one who knows it). On the outside, everything looks fine, but inside, your walk with Jesus feels dry.
You know you’re “going through the motions” when:
You’re just showing up to church. You’re present physically, but your heart isn’t engaged.
Your prayer life is a checklist. Instead of a conversation with your Father, it’s a wish list for a problem-solver.
Your service is for a reward. Deep down, you expect something in return for what you give.
You avoid vulnerability. You hide your struggles and never bring your real self before God or others.
A transactional faith is a mindset of "what can I get?"—it's like performing for a reward. A relational faith is a posture of "I just want to be with You"—it's about seeking God's presence. The people around you may not see the shift, but your heart will know the truth.
Honestly ask yourself : Am I walking with Jesus relationally or just going through the motions?
Let’s Pray: Dear Heavenly Father we praise and thank You for everything you do for us. Forgive me for the times I’ve slipped into a transactional mindset. Help me get back on track. Renew my heart and draw me closer to You each day. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
