The Power of Our Words
Have you ever said something and immediately wished you could take it back? Maybe it was a harsh comment, a sarcastic jab, or an unintentional insult. The words slipped out, and the damage was done (ouch). Words have a way of lingeringâsometimes for years. They can either breathe life into someoneâs soul or leave lasting scars.
Proverbs 18:21
The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit
The Weight of Our Words
Our words hold immense power.
Matthew 12:37
For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.
Wow, thatâs a lot of power. Our words can shape our relationships, influence our emotions, and impact our spiritual walk.
Think about how gossip, slander, and harsh words can cut deep. How many friendships have been ruined because of careless speech? How many people struggle with self-worth because of negative words spoken over them?
Proverbs 12:18
The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.
**On the other hand Proverbs 16:24 says :
Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.
Encouraging words can restore hope, build confidence, and draw people closer to Christ. Let's use our power for good.
As believers, we are called to speak life, not destruction.
Practical steps:
1. Pray for Self-Control
Before opening your mouth, pray. Ask God for the wisdom to use your words wisely.
Psalm 141:3
Set a guard over my mouth, Lord;keep watch over the door of my lips
2. Think Before You Speak
Pause and consider: Will these words bring life or death? Will they encourage or tear down? If you wouldnât want those words spoken to you, donât speak them to someone else.
3. Choose Words That Build Up
Ephesians 4:29
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
4. Practice Active Listening
Sometimes the best thing you can say is nothing at all. Listen with your heart, not just your ears. People often need empathy more than advice.
James 1:19
My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,
5. Ask the Holy Spirit to Help
Controlling our tongue can be tough. But with the Holy Spiritâs help, we can develop Godly speech habits. Pray daily for His guidance in your words.
Luke 12:12
for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say
Words are like seeds; what we plant will grow. If we sow negativity, criticism, and gossip, weâll reap division and pain. But if we plant encouragement, kindness, and truth, weâll reap peace and unity.
Be mindful of your words. Choose to speak life. You never know whose heart might need the encouragement that only we can give.
Let's Pray. Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you for the gift of our words. Please help us be mindful on using our words wisely. Hep me be quick to listen and slow to speak so that my words reflect Your love and grace. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
