The Importance of Spiritual Growth

Yesterday the tire pressure light in my car dash lit up. I was slightly annoyed because I needed to make an extra stop to get air, but glad that I was notified. While low tire pressure is not that big a deal (as long as it’s taken care of), it can easily turn into a bigger issue and cause other damage with fuel efficiency, steering or more tire damage etc. This got me thinking; it wasn't just about the light; it was about what the light represented

That light notifying me of an issue was similar to the Holy Spirit reminding us that our spiritual "tires" need some air. Without proper spiritual "inflation" – (prayer, Bible study, fellowship, and obedience) – we start to deflate.

 John 16:13:

"But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is to come."

**Spiritual growth isn’t optional; it’s essential.

2 Peter 3:18

But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.

This verse calls us to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus. Think of it as moving from spiritual “baby food” to the good stuff—learning more about God, applying His Word, and allowing Him to shape us into the image of Christ. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about progress.

How Do We Grow?
  • Be Intentional

1 Timothy 4:15

Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress.

We should be intentional and fully immerse ourselves in studying and practicing the teachings of the Gospel, so that our spiritual growth and dedication to God will be evident to others. We should strive to serve as a positive example for everyone we come in contact with.

  • Stay Connected

John 15:5

I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

The verse emphasizes the importance of remaining connected to Jesus and the promise of a fruitful life for those who do.

  • Let God’s Word Light the Way

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.

Turn to God's word as a primary source of direction in all situations (regardless of what it looks like).

  • Trust His Guidance

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight

Growth often happens in the uncomfortable places where we have to trust God. Maybe you’re facing a decision or challenge that doesn’t make sense to you. Pray and trust Him to come through for you. Regardless of the outcome things will work out for you even if you can make sense of it at that moment.

  • Obedience

John 14:15

If you love me, keep my commands.

Spiritual growth isn’t just about following a list of rules—it’s about loving Jesus so much that you want to live in a way that honors Him. It’s about telling God that you trust and surrendering to His way (rather than your own).  When you love someone, you naturally want to make them happy.  Obedience is the fruit of a heart that loves Him deeply.

Growing spiritually is about becoming more like Jesus and less like the old version of us. It’s about walking in step with God, trusting Him to guide us, and letting His Word transform us. Spiritual growth is a process, not a sprint. Some days you’ll feel like you’re making great progress; other days, you’ll wonder if you’re stuck in the same spot. Commit to staying connected to the Vine, trusting His process, and living out our faith with joy.

Let’s Pray. Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You for the gift of life and the opportunity to grow in our faith. Help us to stay focused and connected to You and not too distracted. Give us hearts that trust You completely, even when we don't understand the path ahead. Thank You so much for Your patience, mercy, and unfailing love. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
