The 21/90 Rule : A Christian Perspective

The 21/90 rule suggests that it takes 21 days to create a habit and 90 days to turn that habit into a permanent lifestyle change.  The idea is that if you consistently practice a new behavior for 21 days, it will become a habit. If you continue that behavior for 90 days, it will become an ingrained part of your lifestyle.  What does the Bible say about creating good habits, turning those habits into positive lifestyle changes, and the period of time it will take to do it?

The Bible encourages us to adopt a lifelong approach to Spiritual growth , discipline, renewal, and reliance on GOD. It doesn't give a specific timeframe but underscores the importance of continuous effort and trust in GODs timing. Forming good habits and making lifestyle changes are a gradual, ongoing process which involves a daily commitment and dependence on God.

Key Concepts

  • Depend on God: Proverbs 16:3 - Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.

  • Have Discipline / Perseverance: Hebrews 12:11 - No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.  1 Corinthians 9:24  Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize

  • Transformation :   Romans 12:2  Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

The Christian life involves continuous growth and self-discipline that brings long-term rewards. Sustained effort and reliance on GOD's guidance will lead to good habits and transform your life.

Application:

  1. Start with Prayer (every day): Ask Him for wisdom to guide your steps.

  3. Trust in GOD's timing - Change takes time , have faith and know that GOD is at work in and through you (trust in his promises)

The Bible provides clear guidance on the principles of discipline, perseverance, transformation, and dependence on God. These principles help us form and maintain GODly habits, leading to a successful and fulfilling life.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the wisdom in Your Word. Help us to embrace discipline and trust in Your perfect timing. Guide us to form habits that honor You and lead to a fulfilling life. May we find strength in Your promises and live lives that reflect You . In Jesus' name, Amen.
