Staying Focused (part 2) - Biblical Perspective vs. World’s View
While studying the topic of what being focused is and how to stay focused, I kept coming across some interesting value differences regarding the subject. How the world views being focused compared to what the Bible says is different. So much so that I needed to create a part 2 on the topic. Today we will compare and contrast the Bible Perspective vs. the Worlds view on staying focused.
What the World Says About Staying Focused:
The world has a lot to say about staying focused, and most of it centers around self. It’s about ambition, personal goals, and success. You’ll hear phrases like “Stay focused on your hustle,” “Keep your eyes on the prize,” or “You can achieve anything if you stay focused.” While there’s nothing inherently wrong with having goals or working hard, the focus is often on self-empowerment, achievement, and sometimes even material gain. The world teaches us to focus on what we want, how to get ahead, and how to outshine others.
What the Bible Says About Staying Focused:
The Bible shifts the focus away from self and places it squarely on God. Colossians 3:2 “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” The Bible tells us to focus not on earthly treasures, but on heavenly ones. It’s about aligning our hearts with God’s will, not our own. Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Contrast: The big difference here is that while the world’s focus is more self-centered, the Bible calls us to be God-centered. The world says, “You’re the captain of your ship,” but the Bible says, “Let God steer your ship.” The world’s focus is on temporary success, but the Bible directs us to focus on eternal significance. The world encourages us to build our empire, while the Bible encourages us to build God’s kingdom.
While both perspectives recognize the importance of staying focused to achieve something, the key difference lies in what that “something” is. The world’s focus often leads to stress, burnout, and a never-ending chase for more. On the other hand, focusing on GOD leads to peace, purpose, and fulfillment, knowing that we are walking in His will.
So, how do we apply this to our lives? First, we need to evaluate what we’re focusing on. Are our goals aligned with God’s purposes, or are we chasing after the world’s definition of success? Second, we need to prioritize spending time with God through prayer and Scripture. This is how we keep our focus on Him, regardless of life’s distractions. Finally, we must surround ourselves with people who will encourage us to keep our eyes on Jesus, especially when the world tries to pull us in a hundred different directions.
Staying focused isn’t just about avoiding distractions; it’s about choosing what to focus on. Will it be the temporary things of this world, or the eternal things of God? The choice is ours, and it’s a choice we need to make daily.
Let’s pray. Dear Heavenly Father, help us to keep our focus on You and not be swayed by the distractions of this world. Give us the strength to pursue Your will above all else and to trust in Your guidance for our lives. May we fix our eyes on You and live each day with a purpose. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
