Spiritually Distracted
It’s almost ironic—while trying to write a devotion on spiritual distractions, I found myself getting distracted in real time. Normally, I wake up early, spend quiet time with God, and then dive into studying and writing. But today? That did not happen. I overslept, and from the moment I got up, distractions started rolling in—one after another. It was so frustrating, and no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t seem to focus.
Have you ever had one of those days? The kind where no matter how much you want to stay on track, everything seems to pull you away? If so, you’re not alone.
Today thats exactly what I'm going to talk about; how to recognize and overcome spiritual distractions.
The Danger of Distractions
Some distractions aren’t always bad things. They can be things like responsibilities, work, hobbies, or even good deeds. In Luke 10:41-42 Jesus is gently chastising Martha for being worried and distracted and telling her to prioritize her time and attention wisely.
Luke 10:41-42
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Distractions can keep us from hearing God clearly and growing in faith
Mark 4:19
but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful.
How to Re-focus on God
Prioritize God Daily
Matthew 6:33
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Encourage readers to set aside intentional time for prayer and Bible study before other tasks.
Example: Just like we schedule meetings, we should schedule time with God.
Guard Your Mind and Attention
Colossians 3:2
Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
Social media, entertainment, and even worrying can shift our focus.
Set boundaries
3.Remove What Hinders Your Walk
Hebrews 12:1-2
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Sometimes, we need to cut back on things that consume too much of our time and don’t add to our spiritual growth. Example: If scrolling on your phone or watching TV late at night keeps you from waking up early to pray, consider adjusting your schedule.
Be Present with God
Proverbs 4:25-27
Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. 26 Give careful thought to the[a] paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways.27 Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.
Just like driving requires focus to avoid accidents, our spiritual life requires focus to avoid falling away.
Turn off notifications during prayer, have a dedicated quiet space, etc.
We all get distracted sometimes (it happens!). The goal is to recognize it and refocus.
Let’s Pray. Dear Heavenly Father, help me recognize and remove distractions that pull me away from You. Teach me to set my heart and mind on things above and to seek You first each day. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen
