Social Media: Are You Being Entertained, Influenced, or Manipulated?
Social media has become an undeniable part of our lives. We love to scroll, like, and share. As Christians, we should pay more attention to what we watch and ask ourselves: are we being entertained, influenced, or manipulated?
God created us to experience joy and delight in His creation. Entertainment, in its purest form, can be a gift. However, we must be vigilant about the content we consume. Does it glorify God? Does it align with His values? Or does it glorify sin, promote harmful ideologies, and distract us from our spiritual journey?
1 Thessalonians 5:21-22
but test them all; hold on to what is good, 22 reject every kind of evil.
Remember, even good things can become idols when they consume our time and attention. Let us be good stewards of our time, prioritizing spiritual disciplines and responsibilities above endless scrolling.
Ephesians 5:15-16
Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.
Influence: Being Light in a Dark World
Social media can be a powerful tool for influence. We are called to be influencers for good, sharing the Gospel and promoting righteous living. But we must also be discerning about the influences we receive. The algorithms are designed to shape our thoughts and feelings. **Filter everything through the lens of Scripture. Does it align with God's Word? Let the Word of God be your primary influence, guiding your thoughts, actions, and words. Let us be beacons of light in the digital realm, spreading the love of Christ and the truth of His Gospel.
Matthew 5:14-16
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Romans 12:2
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Manipulation: Resisting the Deceiver
Manipulation is a dark force that seeks to control and deceive. Social media can be a breeding ground for fake news, deep fakes, emotional manipulation, and targeted advertising designed to exploit our vulnerabilities. We must be aware of these tactics and resist them. Manipulation is contrary to God's character of honesty, integrity, and love. Be cautious about sharing information that could be used to manipulate others. Remember, manipulation is evil, and we are called to flee from it.

Key Principles for Navigating Social Media
Discernment: Cultivate your ability to discern truth from falsehood, good from evil, in the digital space. (Hebrews 5:14)
Evaluate: Does the content you consume foster love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control? Galatians 5:22-23 provides a framework for evaluating influences.
Stewardship: Be mindful of how you spend your time on social media. Is it building you up, or tearing you down? Are you using it for God's glory, or for your own fleeting pleasure?
Mindful Consumption: Filter for what you consume. Philippians 4:8 - Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
Let’s Pray. Dear Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of technology, but we ask for Your wisdom and discernment as we navigate through social media. Help us to be good stewards of our time and to use these platforms for Your glory. Protect us from manipulation and guide us to be influencers for good. May our hearts be filled with Your love, and may our lives reflect Your truth. In Jesus' precious name, Amen
