Setting Your Mind on the Things Above
In a world filled with countless notifications, endless to-do lists, emails, and a steady stream of distractions, it’s easy to find our minds tangled up in all the “here and now” details. The Bible calls us to something deeper and more lasting:
Colossians 3:2
Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things
This verse encourages us to focus our thoughts, desires, and values on God and His kingdom rather than getting caught up in temporary, worldly concerns. Paul was telling the church in Colossae to make a clear choice about where they invest their mental and emotional energy.
But what does that look like for us in real life today? It’s more than simply ignoring the demands of life; it’s about shifting our focus to what truly matters. GOD invites us to lift our eyes beyond the immediate to see His bigger picture — a view that grounds us in peace and purpose, no matter what’s going on around us. He’s encouraging us to look up and beyond the day-to-day, aligning our focus with God’s eternal perspective instead of getting bogged down by life’s temporary stresses. With some daily perspective-shifting, we can live in the present but with hearts anchored to heaven.
When Paul talks about “things above,” he’s talking about values that come straight from GOD's heart. Qualities like love, mercy, humility, and hope (values that don’t go out of style). Fixing our minds on these help us stay grounded in GOD, like the ultimate spiritual compass. Imagine trying to navigate a road trip without any navigation /GPS. Focusing on “things above” keeps us from getting lost or caught up in detours.
Paul isn’t saying we should ignore everything earthly. Of course somebody has to pay the bills and cook dinner. But he is saying that these tasks shouldn’t be our primary focus. Instead of letting our worries and wants lead us around, we can choose to prioritize what GOD values and bring His wisdom into our everyday lives.
Let’s say you’re about to make a big purchase, maybe that new gadget you’ve had your eye on. It looks good on the outside, but pause and ask yourself: “Will this purchase bring me closer to God’s purpose or help me serve others?” When our values come first, we’re better equipped to make choices that reflect GOD’s priorities.
Practical Steps
"Focusing on 'things above' doesn’t mean ignoring our earthly responsibilities; it means prioritizing them with God’s eternal perspective, letting His wisdom guide our choices and actions."
Matthew 6:33
"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well" .
This verse reminds us that when we put God’s priorities first, He takes care of the rest, allowing us to fulfill our earthly responsibilities in a way that honors Him.
Here are a few ways to start:
Start Your Day with Prayer: Ask GOD to guide you, to shape your decisions, and to remind you of His perspective throughout the day.
Seek Out Moments of Kindness: Look for little ways to serve others. Whether it’s helping someone or offering an encouraging word, these small gestures help us remember God’s values in our daily interactions.
Press Pause on Worries: Worrying is as normal as breathing sometimes, but instead of spiraling, remind yourself of GOD’s promises. Think about/recite your favorite scripture .
Reflect on Your “Above” Mindset: Before bed, take a moment to reflect on the day. Ask yourself if your thoughts and actions were in line with “things above.” Did you put more energy into worries or into GOD’s values?
Let’s Pray. Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us a perspective that’s beyond the ups and downs of this world. Help us to focus on Your eternal values and not get distracted by the temporary. Guide our thoughts and actions, so they reflect Your love, grace, and wisdom. Teach us to start each day looking up, with our minds set on Your kingdom, and to trust that You are with us in every step. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
