Parenting: Disciplining with Godly Wisdom
Parenting is such a wild ride. One moment you are so proud, the next you are wondering what in the world was my child thinking? As a father of five, I can confirm that parenting is not for the faint of heart. It's full of sleepless nights, constant self-doubt, and the frequent cries to GOD for more patience. But despite all its challenges, parenting is also one of the greatest blessings GOD has given (me) us—and one of the heaviest responsibilities.
Disciplining children is one of the toughest aspects of parenting. When your teenager rolls their eyes at your 10th lecture of the week, it’s easy to lose sight of why discipline matters. The truth is, discipline, when done with love, reflects the heart of God. The Bible is our timeless guide and offers wisdom to help us navigate this critical part of parenting.
Biblical Wisdom on Discipline
Ephesians 6:4
"Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord."
Discipline isn’t about asserting dominance or venting frustration. It’s about lovingly teaching and correcting our children, guiding them toward the path of righteousness. When we discipline with wisdom, we reflect God's own approach to correcting His children.
Proverbs 13:24
"Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them."
Please don't take this verse out of context; hold on , before you reach for the nearest "rod," remember that biblical discipline is rooted in love, not harm. It's about consistency, boundaries, and consequences—not anger or punishment out of frustration.
Why Discipline Matters
Discipline is essential because it teaches children self-control, respect for authority, and accountability—traits that are necessary not just for a successful life, but for a Christ-centered one.
Proverbs 29:17
"Discipline your children, and they will give you peace; they will bring you the delights you desire."
I love this verse because it speaks to the long-term rewards of discipline. Yes, the tantrums today might push you to the brink, but the lessons you teach through discipline will bear fruit tomorrow.
Balance Grace and Truth
Parenting is also about finding the delicate balance between discipline and grace.
Proverbs 3:12
"The Lord disciplines those He loves, as a father the son he delights in."
I see myself in my kids all the time, especially when they mess up. It’s humbling and frustrating because I know exactly where they’re coming from. But God often uses those moments to remind me of the way He parents us—with unending patience and abundant grace. Just as He forgives our mistakes and teaches us through them, we must strive to do the same for our children.
Practical Tips for Godly Discipline
Pray: If you only have one, or a whole tribe like me, always Pray and ask for guidance as whether your dealing with a crisis or just trying to hold it together.
Be Consistent: Set clear boundaries and follow through. Kids thrive on structure, even if they don’t admit it.
Discipline in Love, Not Anger: Take a deep breath (or five). Discipline should be about correction, not punishment.
Communicate the “Why”: Let your kids know that discipline comes from love and a desire for their best.
Lead by Example: Children are sponges. They’ll follow what you do far more than what you say.
Parenting isn’t easy, but it’s a calling. Your kids might not understand the "why" behind your decisions today, but someday, they’ll thank you for the boundaries you set and the love you showed. Remember, you're not alone in this. God, the ultimate Father, is with you, guiding you every step of the way.
Let's Pray, Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of children and the privilege of raising them. Help us to discipline with wisdom, love, and grace, reflecting Your heart in all we do. Give us patience when we feel overwhelmed and strength to lead our children in Your ways. May our parenting glorify You and point our children toward Your truth. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
