Natural Talents vs. Spiritual Gifts: What’s the Difference?
Have you ever been asked, “What are your spiritual gifts?” or maybe even wondered to yourself? I know I have—and every time, my mind would immediately jump to, “What am I good at, and how can I use it to glorify God?” It seemed like a logical connection at the time. But I had it all mixed up. I was treating spiritual gifts like my personal skill set—things I had worked hard at and gotten better at over time. But the more I studied God’s Word, the more I realized: Natural talents and spiritual gifts are NOT the same thing.
Natural talents are a combination of genetics, upbringing, environment, education, and practice. You can use them to glorify God, sure—but you can also use them to serve yourself. Spiritual gifts, on the other hand, are given to you after you’ve given your life to Christ. You don’t earn them; you don’t practice your way into them—they’re given to you for a purpose: to serve others and build God’s kingdom.
Let’s break this down biblically—because if you’ve ever been confused like I was, it’s time to set the record straight!
Natural Talents (What You’re Born With)
James 1:17
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
Everyone has them (believers and non-believers alike).
They come from genetics, environment, and practice.
They can be used for secular or spiritual purposes.
Example: Someone born with an incredible singing voice can use it for worship—or for a pop career.
Spiritual Gifts (What You Receive After Salvation)
1 Corinthians 12:7
But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
Given by the Holy Spirit to believers.
Meant to serve others and glorify God.
They grow as we mature in Christ.
Example: A person who has the gift of teaching may not be a naturally charismatic speaker, but when they teach the Word, it resonates deeply with others in a way that can only be explained by God’s power.
We Are Expected to Use What God Has Given Us
1 Peter 4:10
Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.
How Do I Discover My Natural Talents?
Finding your natural talent is actually pretty straightforward. Ask yourself: What comes easily to me? What do people always compliment me on? What tasks or roles do I enjoy that don’t feel like work? If I had to teach someone something, what could I teach effortlessly? Example, if you’ve always had a knack for fixing things, organizing events, or making people laugh, those might be natural talents that you can develop further.
How Do I Discover My Spiritual Gifts?
Unlike talents, spiritual gifts aren’t something we develop in the same way—they are revealed as we grow in Christ. Here’s how to discover yours:
Pray and Ask God to Reveal Them - James 1:5
If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.
Pray: “Lord, show me how You have gifted me to serve Your kingdom.”
Study the List of Spiritual Gifts (1 Corinthians 12, Romans 12:6-8, Ephesians 4:11-12)
Seek Confirmation from Others (ask your Pastor, mentor, or fellow believers): Often, others recognize our gifts before we do.
Using Both for God’s Glory
Your natural talents and spiritual gifts aren’t in competition; they actually work together!
For example, you might have a natural talent for music, which allows you to play an instrument skillfully. However, the spiritual gift of music ministry expressed through worship empowers you to use that musical talent to facilitate deeper encounters with God for others.
Don’t just focus on what you’re good at—focus on how God is calling you to use it.
Maybe today, you feel unsure about your gifts and talents or maybe you’ve been using your natural talents but haven’t tapped into your spiritual gifts yet. The good news is that God has placed something in your hands. He’s given you talents, and if you’re in Christ, He’s given you spiritual gifts too. The question is—are you willing to use them for His glory?
Let's Pray: Dear Heavenly Father Thank You for the gifts and talents You have given me. I recognize that every good and perfect gift comes from You. Help me to distinguish between my natural talents and the spiritual gifts You’ve placed within me. Give me wisdom and guidance as I seek to use them for Your glory. Show me where and how You want me to serve, and let everything I do point back to You. Help me to be a faithful steward of the gifts You’ve entrusted to me so that I may encourage others and build Your kingdom. In Jesus' precious name, Amen.
