Natural Talents vs Spiritual Gifts
If I’m being honest, until I wrote this devotion today, I’ve never been 100% clear and have always had some confusion about the difference between natural talents and spiritual gifts. So I decided to be intentional and really dig into what each one is and how to finally figure out the difference.
Natural Talents
All people are given some type of raw, God-given talents and abilities like cooking, music, athleticism, creativity, etc.. Think about sports; some players are just naturally talented—they may have height, strength, or quick reflexes they can sharpen through training. That’s a natural skill, something they were either born with or developed through practice.
No matter how much raw talent someone has, it doesn’t automatically make them great without practice, discipline, and purpose. Natural talents can take us far in life. Every person—believer or not—has been given talents by God. They are part of our God-given design and can be developed to use in careers, hobbies, and even ministry.
*** Talents alone are limited to human effort ***
1 Peter 4:10
Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.
Spiritual Gifts
Spiritual gifts, on the other hand, are given by the Holy Spirit only to believers and take us beyond what’s humanly possible. These gifts are empowered by the Spirit to build up the Body of Christ and glorify God.
Some examples include:
Prophecy
Teaching
Healing
Giving
Faith
Evangelism
Service
Speaking in tongues
Every believer receives spiritual gifts when they surrender to Christ and are indwelt by the Holy Spirit. Unlike natural talents, these gifts operate under the Spirit’s direction and eternal purpose.
1 Corinthians 12:7
Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
When natural talents are surrendered to God and aligned with spiritual gifts, the results are powerful.
A natural talent for music might be paired with the gift of worship leading or encouragement.
An athletic platform might be used with the gift of evangelism.
Creative talent might merge with the gift of teaching to reach people in new ways.
When you combine your natural abilities with your Spirit-given gifts, God takes what you can do and turns it into what only He can do through you.
How to Discover Your Spiritual Gifts
Here are two resources to help you:
Biblical Guidance – Scripture shows us that spiritual gifts are discovered through prayer, serving others, and allowing the Holy Spirit to lead (1 Corinthians 12, Romans 12, Ephesians 4). As you step out in faith and serve, your gifts become clearer.
Online Tool – You can also take a spiritual gifts test like GiftsTest.com, which gives insight into your strengths and how God may want to use you. (**** Always pray and ask for guidance, never just rely on online resources alone, they may help but God is our ultimate source)
Ask yourself:
Am I only relying on my natural abilities, or am I depending on the Holy Spirit?
Which gifts might God already be showing me as I serve others?
How can I use both my talents and my spiritual gifts to glorify Christ?
Let’s Pray. Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the way You created me with natural talents and for the spiritual gifts You’ve given me through the Holy Spirit. Help me not to lean only on my own abilities, but to depend on Your power. Show me how to use both my talents and gifts in ways that bless others and bring glory to You. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
