Leaving a Spiritual Legacy

Celebrating my mother’s birthday recently was a beautiful reminder of the impact a life well-lived can have. As family and friends shared stories about she has impacted their lives with her kindness, faith, and love, I started reflecting on legacy. What does the Bible say about leaving a legacy? And more importantly, how do we do it?

My grandparents obviously set a GODLY example for my mother, who, in turn, set the bar high for my siblings and me. Now, I've had to ask myself, “What kind of legacy are my wife and I creating for our children?” It’s a question worth pondering because the truth is, the legacy we leave isn’t just about money or possessions—it’s about the lasting spiritual impact we have on others.

A Generational Perspective

The Bible encourages us to think generationally, not just about our own lifetime.

Proverbs 13:22

A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children....

While this verse often brings up thoughts of financial inheritance, it speaks to something deeper: the inheritance of wisdom, faith, and godly character.

Psalm 78:4-7:
We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, His power, and the wonders He has done…so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children....

This passage calls us to share God’s goodness with our families and ensure the next generation knows and trusts Him.

How can we Leave a Spiritual Legacy?
  1. Model Faithfulness
Kids watch what you do more than they listen to what you say. If you want your children or those you influence to love and trust GOD, live out that love yourself.
    1 Corinthians 11:1

Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.

  2. Teach God’s Word
Share God’s promises and truths regularly. Read the Bible together, pray as a family, and talk about how God is working in your life.

    Deuteronomy 6:6-7
These words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children.

  3. Serve Together
Involve your family in serving others. Whether it’s volunteering at church, helping a neighbor, or giving to those in need, acts of service instill compassion and reflect God’s love.
    1 Peter 4:10

As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.

  4. Pray for Generations
Pray not just for your children, but for their children and the generations to come. Ask God to guide them, bless them, and draw them closer to Him.

    Proverbs 20:7

The righteous man walks in his integrity; his children are blessed after him.

Leaving a spiritual legacy isn’t about being perfect. Trust me, I’ve had plenty of moments where I’ve screwed up and thought, "Wow, is this the example I want to set ?? " But God’s grace covers our imperfections. It’s about consistency, not perfection. Keep pointing your family to GOD, even in the messy moments. Your legacy isn’t written in one moment or even one lifetime—it’s written in the lives you touch and the faith you inspire.

Let's Pray. Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You for the gift of family and the opportunity to leave a legacy that reflects Your love and faithfulness. Help us to model a GODLY life, teach Your Word diligently, and serve others with joy. May we pass on a rich inheritance of faith, wisdom, and character to the next generation. Guide us in building a legacy that glorifies You for generations to come. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
