Fighting Distractions—Keeping Relationships First
Have you ever been so busy that you look up and realize months (or years) have passed since you’ve had a meaningful conversation with a loved one or spent quality time? That hit me recently while on a Zoom call with family—my brother, sister, and some of our kids talking about (and planning) my mother’s 80th birthday party. In the middle of discussing centerpieces and playlists, I found myself wondering: How did I get here? How did life become so full of meetings, work, and random activities that spending time together felt like an event, not the norm?
Recently, my wife and I recently had to share a car for about a month. At first, it felt like major inconvenience because we are both so busy. But after a couple of days of driving her to work and picking her up, I realized something—I was really enjoying the extra time together!
It’s funny how GOD can use situations like a car problem to nudge us back to what’s important. Distractions can creep in so subtly, and before you know it, the relationships we cherish most get the least of our attention.
Ephesians 5:15-16
Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.
What Does the Bible Say?
The Bible is clear: relationships matter, and they’re worth our time and attention.
Family is a gift from God.
Psalm 127:3
Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.
GOD didn’t give us family so we could ignore them while answering emails or bingeing Netflix.
Time with loved ones reflects God’s love.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 reminds us that love is patient and kind. True love makes time, even when life feels inconvenient. Jesus spent time with His disciples and friends—even when He was busy saving the world, He stopped to sit with Mary and Martha (Luke 10:38-42).GOD calls us to intentional
Ephesians 5:15-16Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.
This verse tells us to live wisely, making the most of every opportunity. Life’s distractions will never disappear, but we can choose to prioritize relationships over the noise.
Think about who in your life needs a little more of your time and attention right now? Are there “inconveniences” (like my car-sharing experience) that GOD might be using to help you reconnect with someone? How can you take small steps this week to make your loved ones feel valued?
Distractions can easily creep up on you and take over before you know it. So, I encourage you moving forward to try something crazy: look up from the phone, pause the to-do list, and be fully present with someone you love. If life hands you an “inconvenience,” like sharing a car, take it as a divine nudge. Who knows? GOD might just be giving you a front-row seat to something beautiful.
Dear heavenly Father , thank You so for the gift of family and relationships. Help me to recognize the distractions that pull me away from the people You’ve placed in my life. Teach me to value connection over convenience and to be present in each moment. Thank You for using the little things, (like shared car rides or birthday Zoom calls) to remind me of what really matters. I love you, In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
