Embracing Godly Wisdom
Today, let’s talk about wisdom – not the kind you pick up from a self-help book or a motivational speaker, but godly wisdom. The kind that guides you in the right direction, even when you’re not quite sure where that direction is.
When the Bible talks about wisdom, it’s referring to a kind of knowledge that goes beyond just knowing facts. It’s like that friend who always seems to know what to say, who to trust, and what not to do – except, in this case, that friend is GOD Himself. Godly wisdom is practical, down-to-earth, and deeply relevant to our lives. It's less about being smart and more about living smart – with purpose and integrity.
James 1:5
If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask GOD, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.
Wisdom vs. Knowledge
Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit; wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad. Biblical wisdom operates much the same way. It doesn’t just help you know what’s right or wrong; it helps you know how to apply what’s right in any situation.
Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
Imagine that you’re deciding whether or not to take a new job offer. The position looks fantastic on paper – it pays more, offers benefits, and everyone you’ve talked to says, “Go for it!” But there’s a little nudge in your spirit, a whisper that maybe this job isn’t where GOD wants you right now. Seeking godly wisdom means you don’t just dive in because it “makes sense.” You pray about it, search the Scriptures, and listen for GOD’s voice. Wisdom helps you see beyond appearances, trusting that GOD knows what’s best.
How to Embrace Godly Wisdom
So, how do we get this wisdom?
Ask for It: God loves it when we seek His wisdom. Just like Solomon asked for wisdom to govern Israel, we can ask God to guide us in our everyday lives. And the best part? He’s ready to give it freely (James 1:5).
Seek Wisdom in His Word: The Bible is filled with life-changing wisdom. Proverbs alone is like a treasure trove of advice on handling money, relationships, and integrity. Take time to study the Word and find verses that speak to the decisions you face.
Be Willing to Wait: Sometimes, Godly wisdom involves waiting for His timing, which can be challenging in a world that values immediate results. But in those times, remember that God’s wisdom is worth the wait – He knows what’s best for us.
Learn from Others: God often gives wisdom through the counsel of others.
Proverbs 15:22
Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.
Have trusted, godly people in your life who can give you insight when you need it most.
Let's Pray: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the promise of wisdom. We humbly come to You, asking for Your guidance in all our decisions, both big and small. Teach us to trust You, seek You, and lean on Your understanding rather than our own. Help us to walk in Your wisdom every day, knowing that You see the whole picture and know what’s best for us. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
