Black Friday: Are You Chasing the Ultimate Deal?
Black Friday has become the unofficial kickoff to the holiday season. Crazy traffic, long lines, and crowded stores; It's a shopping frenzy every year. People are literally killing themselves (and others) to get those deals. I saw a statistic that stated there have been over 17 deaths and 125 injuries directly related to the Black Friday mania.
Matthew 6:19-21:
"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
Black Friday reminds us that people will go to great lengths for something they value. While I do understand the urge to get a really good deal. Salvation is the greatest deal that’s available to you, and it's free. Those sales can’t compare to the value of eternal treasures like love, grace, and peace. Jesus paid the ultimate price for our sins so we could receive the gift of eternal life.
Think about it: we’ll wait in long lines for a discounted TV, but how often do we line up for opportunities to serve others or spend time in prayer or in the Word? Pursuing a deal is not a bad thing in itself but how much more should we pursue Christ where your return is everlasting? The effort we put into chasing sales should remind us of the effort we should put into our relationship with Christ.
Matthew 6:33:
"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
Take time to reflect this holiday season to prioritize spending more time with Jesus. While buying and giving gifts is awesome, spending time in the Word and praying is even more important to your spiritual growth as well as your relationship with Him.
Let’s Pray. Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Jesus, the ultimate treasure that no sale can match. Help us to keep our priorities aligned with Your will, seeking eternal treasures over earthly possessions. Teach us to be generous, grateful, and focused on serving others this season. May we reflect Your love in all that we do. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen."
