Are You Putting God First in Your Life?

Life today is full of distractions—work, family, social media, endless to-do lists. Before we know it, the busyness of life can slowly crowd out what’s most important: our relationship with God. If we're not careful, the demands of life can take priority over our spiritual health. But how do we ensure that God remains first in our lives, especially when we are pulled in so many different directions?

Matthew 6:33

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

This is a clear call to prioritize God above all else. When we put God first, everything else falls into its proper place. This doesn’t mean that life becomes easy or that we will be free of challenges, but it means we are grounded in the One who sustains us. When God is our foundation, we gain the strength, wisdom, and peace to handle whatever life throws our way.

The Busyness of Life

Imagine your day starts early. You wake up, get the kids off to school, rush to work, handle countless tasks, pick up kids, come home, prepare dinner, and before you know it, the day is over. You've barely had a moment to breathe, let alone pray or open your Bible. It’s easy for life to get overwhelming, and the busyness can often pull us away from time with God. We tell ourselves, “I’ll read my Bible tomorrow” or “I’ll pray before bed,” but how often does tomorrow come without us following through?

Without intentionally carving out time for God, it’s easy to become spiritually malnourished. Just like our bodies need food and water, our souls need God’s Word and His presence to thrive.

Why It’s Important to Make Time for God

Reading your Bible, praying, and setting aside time for God is crucial for spiritual growth and maintaining a close relationship with Him.

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.

God’s Word guides us, helps us make wise decisions, and keeps us focused on what really matters.

Prayer is our direct line of communication with God. It’s in prayer that we share our hearts, our concerns, our joys—and it’s also where we listen for God’s guidance. Without prayer and time in the Word, we begin to rely on our own strength and wisdom, which often leads to frustration and weariness.

How to Put God First in Everyday Life

Here are a few practical ways to ensure that God remains your priority, even in the midst of life’s demands:

  1. Start Your Day with God
Before you check your phone, start your day by checking in with God. Set aside a few moments in the morning to read a short passage of Scripture or devotion, pray, and focus your mind on Him. This simple act sets the tone for the rest of your day, ensuring that God is at the forefront of your mind.

  2. Schedule Time with God Like an Appointment
Life gets busy, and if you don’t schedule time for God, it’s easy to let it slip. Put time for Bible study and prayer on your calendar—whether it’s 15 minutes or an hour. Treat it like a meeting that you cannot cancel. This discipline helps you make God a non-negotiable part of your daily routine.

  3. Incorporate God into Your Daily Activities
You don’t have to be sitting in church or in quiet time to stay connected to God. As you go about your day, invite Him into your tasks. Whether you’re driving, doing chores, or working, take moments to pray, reflect on Scripture, or simply thank God for His presence in your life.

    1 Thessalonians 5:17

    Pray without ceasing.

This means staying in constant communication with God, even in the small moments.

  4. Limit Distractions
Distractions are everywhere—social media, TV, endless notifications on our phones. To truly put God first, sometimes we need to intentionally limit these distractions. Set boundaries for how much time you spend on things that pull you away from God. This might mean turning off your phone during prayer or limiting social media so that you can focus on Bible reading.

  5. Surround Yourself with Godly Community
Fellowship with other believers can be a great source of encouragement and accountability. When you’re part of a church community, Bible study group, or simply have a friend who shares your faith, they can help remind you of God’s importance in your life.

    Proverbs 27:17

As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.

Having others in your life who encourage you spiritually helps keep God at the center.

  6. Reflect Daily on God's Faithfulness
End your day by reflecting on where you saw God at work. Journal or simply pray about what God has done in your life that day. This practice keeps you aware of His constant presence and reminds you of His faithfulness. Take a moment to thank Him for His grace.

Putting God first is a lifelong journey. It requires intentional effort, but the reward is a deep, abiding relationship with our Lord and Savoir Jesus Christ. As you make God a priority, you will find that your faith grows, your perspective shifts, and the busyness of life loses its power to distract you from what matters most.

Make the choice today to prioritize God in your life. Seek Him first in all you do, and watch as everything else falls into place.

Let's Pray: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for Your constant presence in my life. Help me to prioritize You above all else, even in the busyness of my daily routine. Guide me to put You first in my thoughts, actions, and decisions. Give me the discipline to seek You through prayer, Your Word, and fellowship with others. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
