Are You Building Walls Between You and God?
Have you ever locked yourself out of your car? You can see your keys sitting on the seat, mocking you through the window, but no matter how much you jiggle the handle, that door isn’t opening. You might try to force it, call for help, or even consider breaking the window in desperation. The worst part is that you feel so frustrated because you’re the one who locked yourself out in the first place.
That’s exactly what sin does in our relationship with God. The barriers between us and Him aren’t built by Him, they’re built by us. Sometimes we can be very good at building up barriers of sin, doubt, pride, and distractions.
From the beginning, sin has been the ultimate divider. Adam and Eve’s disobedience in the garden didn’t just get them evicted, it created a gap between us and God.
Genesis 3:23-24
Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life
Our sin is what separates us. And yet, many times, instead of tearing the walls down we build them higher.
Isaiah 59:2
But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.
The walls can be made of pride: other times, they’re built from fear and shame: feeling too guilty to come back to Him
Romans 8:1
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,
Let’s not forget good old-fashioned busyness and distraction instead of seeking His presence (see Luke 10:38-42).
God didn’t leave us locked out, He made a way to open the door through Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 2:13-14
But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
14 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility,
The cross was the key that unlocked the door. Through Jesus, we have open access to God
Hebrews 10:19-22
Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.
No more locked doors. No more separation. No more barriers. Are there any walls you’ve built between yourself and God? (Sin, fear, distractions, pride?) Think about how you can intentionally draw near to Him today.
Let’s Pray. Dear heavenly Father forgive me for the times I’ve let sin, doubt, or distractions come between us. Thank You for sending Jesus to tear down every wall and open the door to Your presence. Help me to walk in the freedom of being close to You. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
