Does Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Align with the Bible? (Part 1)

While having a conversation with one of my closest friends, the subject of Maslow's hierarchy of needs came up. It prompted me to explore not just the theory itself but also how it aligns with biblical principles. Many are familiar with Abraham Maslow's famous pyramid of needs, which suggests that human behavior is motivated by fulfilling basic physical and emotional needs, eventually leading to "self-actualization." But as Christians, we must ask: Does this worldview line up with what Scripture teaches?

Who Was Abraham Maslow?

Abraham Harold Maslow, a well-known American psychologist, developed what is now called Maslow's hierarchy of needs. It’s a theory that suggests human motivation is driven by the need to fulfill certain priorities in life, starting from physiological needs like food and safety, all the way up to self-actualization, which he described as reaching one's full potential. Maslow was an atheist who struggled to accept spiritual experiences as valid unless they fit within a framework of scientific positivism.

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

Maslow’s theory, while useful in understanding certain aspects of human behavior, misses the core truth of our existence: We were created to glorify God, not ourselves. Our fulfillment is found not in reaching the pinnacle of self-actualization but in walking humbly with our Creator. Maslow’s hierarchy places human self-fulfillment at the top, but the Bible calls us to live a life that glorifies God above all else.

Luke 9:23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.

This is the heart of Christian life: not self-actualization, but Christ-actualization—becoming more like Him each day.

A Biblical Perspective

The Bible presents a radically different view of human needs and priorities. While Maslow’s model places self-fulfillment as the ultimate goal, Scripture teaches that the highest need we have is not self-actualization, but rather a relationship with God.

Matthew 6:33

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Jesus doesn't call us to focus on fulfilling our personal needs first. Instead, He tells us that our primary need is God—everything else will follow when we put Him first.

Biblical Hierarchy of Needs

A Biblical hierarchy of needs, rooted in Scripture, would be grounded in the understanding that God is the source of all provision, and our spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being comes from Him. Here’s a five-tiered model inspired by the Bible, reflecting what should guide a believer’s behavior and priorities:

As you go about your daily life, consider where your priorities lie. Are you chasing self-fulfillment, or are you seeking God first? Are you focused on meeting your own needs, or are you trusting that God will meet them when you follow His plan?

Let's Pray. Dear Heavenly Father, help me to seek You above all else. I know that true fulfillment can only be found in You. Teach me to prioritize my spiritual needs and to trust You with my physical and emotional ones. May I live a life that glorifies You, putting Your kingdom first in all things. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
