A Biblical Approach to Physical, Mental, and Emotional Well-being
“Wellness” often feels like a trend rather than a lifestyle, but God actually called us to this mindset ages ago! The Bible tells us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit – which means we’re the caretakers of something valuable and holy. Caring for our physical, mental, and emotional health is not just about feeling good; it’s about honoring God with what He’s given us.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.
Here, Paul reminds us that caring for our bodies isn’t an optional hobby. It’s essential worship. Just like we wouldn’t let our homes or church buildings fall into disrepair, we’re called to care for our “temples”—the bodies and minds God has entrusted to us.
A Holistic Approach to Health:
God wants us to steward our bodies well—not so we can look perfect, but so we’re equipped for His purposes. Eating right, exercising, and resting are ways to keep our physical “temple” ready for whatever God may call us to do.
1 Timothy 4:8
For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.
Physical fitness is valuable, but not the ultimate goal. Our primary aim is to live a life pleasing to God, but physical care helps us stay energized for His service. If exercise sounds exhausting, start small. Take a “temple walk” after dinner – a little walk just to chat with God and honor Him by caring for your body!
Mental Health: Renewing the Mind
Our minds need as much care as our bodies, especially in a world that throws so much stress our way.
Philippians 4:8
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
This verse encourages us to dwell on the good and the true. When we focus on God’s truth, we can let go of anxieties and negative thoughts.
At the end of the day, try a “thought audit” and think of three “true” things God says about you, His promises, or moments where you saw His goodness. Let these truths shape your mindset.
Emotional Health
Jesus is our ultimate source of peace and rest. He extends an open invitation to bring our burdens to Him.
Matthew 11:28-30
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Whether we’re facing stress, anxiety, or simply feeling overwhelmed, Jesus promises that we can find rest in Him. Emotional well-being starts with learning to trust and rest in His goodness.
Schedule a “Jesus break.” Take a few minutes each day to pause, breathe, and lay your worries down before Him, even if it’s just mentally handing Him your daily to-do list.
Taking care of our physical, mental, and emotional health is more than a self-care routine—it’s a God-care routine. Every step we take to nurture our bodies, renew our minds, and find peace in Jesus reflects our reverence for the gift He’s given us. As we grow in stewarding our health, we become better equipped to serve, love, and live out His calling. Remember, God’s grace covers us every step of the way, so take it one day at a time, knowing each choice brings you closer to living fully for Him.
Let's Pray: Dear heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of our bodies and minds. Help us to treat them as holy and valuable, making choices that honor You in every way. Teach us to find rest in You, to renew our minds with Your truth, and to care for ourselves so we can be ready for all You’ve planned for us. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
